25 August 2014 at about 3:30 pm I invited two business associates from out of state to join me for light fare at this restaurant. When I made the choice to visit I was thinking the store would be open until 4 pm. We arrived there and ordered at about 2:45 pm. I noticed the store was out of most coffees, there was no iced tea, and many bagel varieties were sold out, etc.; the store selections do tend to get pretty barren near the end of the day.One of my friends asked to order a chicken sandwich, and was told the store was already sold out. These to me are signs of a staff that wants to get out sooner rather than later; it made me wonder if Einstein pays employees for work after official store hours? We ordered then sat down to wait for the food. My order for a Cherry Tart was delivered unheated (I had asked for it to be warmed, but I did not complain) in a basket, as I had specifically ordered to eat in. My friends orders were delivered later to the table in to go boxes and bagged.Moments after we were seated and the food had arrived, just as my friends started to eat, an employee told us the restaurant would close at 3 pm. I thought that likely meant no new orders would be filled, and they would commence to shut down and clean up then. Most restaurants might stop serving at a time but allow customers to finish, in their own time, then leave. About five minutes later we were again reminded that the employees were closing and we would need to leave. My friends started wolfing down their bagel sandwiches, and were a bit surprised at this treatment. This entire episode was becoming stressful to them as they were literally eating as fast as they could; one of my friends was struggling as in his haste parts of the cream cheese/tomato fell off his bagel. I was embarrassed by this treatment of visitors.About five minutes after then the other employee, standing near the register and looking at us as though he was frustrated, told us (we were sitting at the table alongside a window well away from him) that “I can’t do anything until you are out of the restaurant” - we were holding him up by eating there or not eating fast enough. At about 3:10 or 3:15 my party of three gathered our remaining food and drink, and we walked outside to the front of the restaurant, sitting on the wood landscaping timbers near the outdoor tables - their chairs had already been taken inside!I cannot recall ever before having been so poorly treated by anyone else in the hospitality industry. I was amazed, as were my friends, by the attitude of the two employees. The employees could have pointed out to us when we ordered our food that we could order ‘to go’ but that we would not likely have time to stay and eat for example; we could have driven four blocks north to the new Panera restaurant.I had been a regular customer of the Einsteins Laurel store since it opened. I dined there, usually in the morning, at least twice a week on average and some weeks almost every other day. I hosted many meetings with a friend or several friends there - almost every Saturday morning and at times during the week. I had been cordial and respectful towards all staff, including the two employees who basically threw us out of the restaurant. Regardless, no customer should have been treated like this.I tried to file a complaint on-line at Einstein web site - the form did not work. I called, left message with woman - no call back. I (and friends) were regular visitor to this store, the food can be good, but have not returned since.
