I rebuilt my first engine which was a Toyota 22re. I brought head block and crank for machine work. They were very thorough and gave me and did everything exactly as it was needed. At first was they didnt notice the crank they gave me was cracked but as soon as i brought it to there attention, they got me another one right away. All the measurements were very precise and perfect. They were very friendly and answered any questions i had and to top it all off the bill was very reasonable. I would definitely return and recommend to others.

Sent them an rm125 cylinder to resleeve. Was told something easy and they could handle it. Had several conversations about my bike tried to be very helpful. Charged my card said it would be in the mail that day. Week and half go by no parts. I call them up and was told they didn’t install the shoe correctly and ruined my cylinder. But never once called to let me know. Still no answer about how the issue will be resolved or even if a replacement cylinder would be given to me. Or a refund for them ruining my cylinder.

I waited a year before leaving this review. Steve seemed like he wanted to take care of the situation but it just never happened so here we are. So I took them my engine to rebuild and when I got it back the flywheel was already installed and the water pump was not. Had to remove flywheel to install water pump. Both valve covers were on backwards, fuel lines installed wrong, oil pan was totally messed up from them removing it with an air chisel. Oil was pouring all over the floor when I put oil in it. I had to hammer the pan back flat to make it seal up properly. When I put oil in again it start leaking out of the rear main seal. Steve said bring him the truck and they would take care of it and they did. They had it fixed within a couple days. I then drove the truck around town and put 400 miles on it before doing any towing. The very first time towing I got 70 miles and the engine blew. I do not believe the engine failure was do to the work done at universal machine because this truck has blown 3 engines in a row now and its the same thing every time, pistons are getting melted through. Anyway I had asked steve for some compensation for my mechanic for all the additional work he performed fixing all their mistake and steve agreed to give me $250 but he never did. I stopped by 3 times over the course of a year and every time he said he didnt have any cash. The last 2 times I asked for a check and he said oh man thats a pain in the neck. Well steve this whole situation was a F-ing nightmare for me. I wanted to leave a better review because Steve seems genuine in wanting to take care of the issues but this over all experience was just terrible. It is what it is. Too many mistakes for me to take my business back to them.I need to ad to this review. When I took the motor to another machine shop to get rebuilt again they said the block hadnt even been sleeved and I was told by steve they sleeved one cylinder and replacing the piston. I was told by new machine shop the piston was installed backwards as well but I never saw it with my own eyes.

My husband took his engine in due to distributor problems. They had the engine and distributor for 3 weeks. While in their possession they hit the engine with a fork lift and dropped it. Damaged quite a bit on the engine, they were supposed to order a new header as well. 2 months later still nothing. We took the engine back because it was making a funny noise after it was put in the truck. After another 2 weeks they “fixed” the problem they caused. The engine is now making a knocking sound. They didn’t want to replace the engine just fix it. Do not use these people.

Im not a professional mechanic or anything like that. I like to rebuilt old motorcycles as a hobby and occasionally run into problems. depending on how old the bike is it can be very difficult to find replacement parts. Ive gone to Universal a few times to have parts machined and also just for advice on fixing something. I have nothing but positive reviews for Universal automotive & engine. they do quality work, they dont break you wallet, and they dont make you feel like an idiot if you have questions. Ill only take my machinist and engine rebuild needs to Universal

This place was great. I was refered to this place by a local mechanic that works for a certain cable celebrity shop in town. Im a military trained mechanic and combat engineer but a beginner with total civilian rebuilds building my first engine and they were all very quick to explain and in my case, explain again what needed to be done and how they would do it. AT LEAST 25% less then ANY other shop in the city (and Ive called them all and visited half). Only shop in a year and a half of looking that gave me a warm fuzzy of trust. Place is littered with blocks and old heads, just like a no whiz-bang, old school, trustworthy, competent shop should look. Ive been a shade tree parts replacer home mechanic for years with my Toyota trucks and know more than enough to be dangerous and I can tell these guys know their stuff and are willing to share it with no up-selling. They are always busy in the back working sometimes you have to chase them down in the back. Im always suspisous a shop that when you walk into the office you find all the mechanics hanging out ready to quote you and ring you up but nobody in the shop working. Or the places that send out all their machine work to a different shop that actually does the work. They prepped my block crank, and rods and everything went back in perfectly. Cant wait to get my head back. Again, for way less than the rest of the Las Vegas shady, fake, high on their horse, over confident shops.

Just left my block with Steve. Very knowlegable and looks out for the customers best interest. Didnt frown upon on the fact that i had my own rebuild kit. I called alot of other shops in the valley and Universal stood out. They took time to answer my questions on the phone and gave good advise although i acted like i didnt know anything. Left feeling good about my situation. Thanks Steve!

WARNING:I had a crank checked and block cleaned by these people, first warning was he did not give any paper work when I left it. Second he told me he would contact me the next day once his machinist triple checked our numbers as the crank showed well within specs first by me and then double checked by Steve .. no call the next day, I waited till 1:00 p.m the following day before I called him, Steve then informed me that he was going to machine the crank down, I asked him why, his answer,we decided to .... oil clearance was .0015 (TEN thousands) the tolerance is .004 (thousands) and was not out of round. THIRD he gave me a verbal quote of $75 for tanking my parts that changed to $95 once I got to the shop (STILL a fair price)... but then after I called him out for trying to do unnecessary work he waived the extra twenty and charged me $50 more to spend 1 min and 30 seconds polishing the crank as I stood there watching.(AND THAT IS WHY YOU GET AN ESTIMATE BEFORE WORK IS DONE).... Another issue that you will find with this business the place is a disaster area, it looks more like a junk yard then a machine shop, beyond messy. With a sign that says pick up after yourself that is obviously ignored.... I have seen dungeons that were lit better then this place, are you going to trust precision work being done in the dark ?.... will I bring them more work? ..... NO WAY.
