Freaking love you guys. I have been hearing about The Root for a long time but didn’t actually make it out until I moved closer. This is the place I always bring new people when they’re visiting Lakewood for the first time, and also the place I go to just relax and decompress and people watch. The food is filling and the menu has something for everyone. Every employee I have interacted with has been super warm and kind (special thanks to Ethan, who always spends a moment talking with me when we’re there at the same time). Stay awesome!

Best cappuccino I have had in a long time. Most cafes in the area scald their milk and over-steam it. This was done very well.

Usually I find myself very well ado at said establishment. Usually...Today as I sat and made small talk with everyone, I felt something strange in the air. On my third cup of Bunn water instant coffee, (as I traced the local paper), I again went outside to smoke.Just about finished with my cigarette when an employee from Chile approached me. You can not leave your stuff unattended.Im smoking as I always do and leave my belongings inside so my seat isnt taken. I am the Manager!Yesterday, the woman claimed not to be.She was also wearing two rings and one of them was inscribed J>D>J.She claimed the werent real.I clanged the one ring in particular, and noticed it was a striped silver and rose gold ring.When I asked her about the ring today, before noon, she said I dont know what youre talking about.I have been homeless for four months now and still I apply for jobs. I was relaxing and trying to enjoy my Friday.Though she did not tell me I had to leave, I felt like I was trying to be rushed out as she went out of her way and came outside to engage me in conversation.Only to say her piece, then walk quickly away as if I wasnt allowed a response. Went here on a Sunday afternoon to get lunch and there were no tables available and no one was leaving. Literally, NOT ONE person in the place was eating. Not one. Waited 30 minutes before an employee told a guy to get up. There’s a library across the street!!!! Go read and work on your screen plays over there. Food was ok.

Stopped in for the first time last week, and Ill definitely be back. I had an iced tea which was one of their specials (ginger, lemon, and lavender if I remember correctly) and a veggie sandwich. Everything was wonderful! Atmosphere was very welcoming and the WIFI worked great. I recommend!

Don’t skip the food. It’s some of the best around. Often under occupied and a little loud. Perfect for a casual Sunday with an old friend or a mid day pick me up. The espressos is slightly above average there are better cups of joe around but the decor and over all feel makes it a spot worth the stop.

Love everything about this place! Their coffee is absolutely delicious and all of their baked goods that Ive tried are amazing. The atmosphere is also great. They have beautiful local art hanging on the walls and a community pantry where you can drop off food that you dont need/want or take food that you do need. The staff there are absolutely terrific and so nice and friendly. I highly recommend this place!

An icy drink at the Root is my midroute reward for walking long distance. Their selection of teas is creative and tasty. It refreshes and sets me up for the miles ahead! Friendly folks, food good for us and the planet, plus a community fridge adds up to an awesome spot.

My sweet potato, black bean and egg burrito was delicious...and big! Great food! My daughter had the vegan calzone. She loved it.

The Root cafe is a staple in Lakewood, with vegetarian dishes, homemade and local. It always feels healthy and tastes delicious.They currently have a free cupboard of food for those in need, or for those more fortunate to donate.They also rent the grass area from the Church next door so they can sit Adirondack chairs that the owner made in an outdoor space for us during covid!They had a sign out once that makes me think every time I almost grab a tea at Starbucks...and instead stop in here for their fresh loose leaf tea “your purchase is your support” #shoplocal

We were frequent visitors to the Root Cafe before the pandemic, even driving from the east side. We loved the coffee and breakfast options. The last few times we’ve been, the service has been very slow and the quality of the food has not been as good - not sure what has happened but I hope they can get back up and going soon.

Absolutely loved the artsiness atmosphere of this place. This little gem was suggested for me by Google maps as a place Id like to check out. So glad I stopped by this morning after my race, the service staff was friendly,prompt, and quick. I had the Mexican cocoa which was hot and frothy. I ordered the root biscuit sandwich with a fried egg. The food sandwich was hot and fresh when brought the table. Ill definitely be back. Highly recommend to anyone who hasnt tried this place yet💓

I came back to Cleveland after living here for a bit, and this was of course on the list for revisits. With more people working from home, it can be a bit busier, especially during meal times. But, I came back an hour later, and there was open space for me to sit down, get something to eat, and do some work. Its a lovely and lively atmosphere, with great music choices, people chattering, kitchen noises, etc. - great for people like me who focus better with background noise. The staff is cute. They run a community fridge, too! Obviously very community and justice-minded.I got Kims breakfast bowl. A bit on the small side, but it was perfect for a small eater like me, and I didnt find myself needing to add anything to it; the kimchi is the star flavor. (They could add a tiny bit more kimchi tbh.)Love it, and if I come back, ill be back!

Amazing food. I love going here just for the decor and ambiance. They have great vegan options and everything is full of flavor. Prices are a little pricey for certain things, but more than worth it for taste and size. One of my go to places when I come home to Cleveland. Staff is always friendly.

Really nice staff and the egg sandwich was so good. I ordered black coffee and I felt bad complaining because it wasnt good and didnt taste fresh, but they were very nice about it and got me a fresh cup. I love their vegan blueberry lemon scone when they have it, it reminds me of fruit loops.

A quaint and quirky coffee shop and fabulous food establishment. Light, bright and airy, this is a great place to bring a laptop and get some work done, while satisfying your palette. Im a huge fan of the burritos, the salads, the soups and the sandwiches. The food coupled with the environment makes each meal feel like a comfort one. With sustainable practices and quality ingredients, this is a meal you can feel good about eating in more ways than one; a local favorite.

Nice place. Have been going to Root Cafe for years. On a recent visit the coffee seemed watered-down and wasnt hot enough, and the cookie was hard as a rock. I am confident, however, that Root Cafe will soon return to its pre-Covid excellence.

Gunpowder black tea that will change your life. A phenomenal dirty chai latte. As consistent today as it was years ago when it opened. Friendly, professional baristas. The espresso based drinks are all top notch. A warm environment to work in during the day.

Love this laid back, cozy atmosphere. I live they have a free food refrigerator along with dry packaged food for those in need. So kind and thoughtful. Very friendly.

The soup o the day was delicious potato mushroom and broccoli served with toasted rye bread - mmmmm!!! And the Golden milk surprisingly satisfying.

The Root Café is honestly such a great place. Their coffee is on point... Their food is incredible... Even people who arent vegetarian and vegan would love their food. So flavorful and done so well! And their baked goods are also VERY good. I love that they are just sweet enough and taste like quality! My favorite food is either the vegan burrito, the root pizza, or the culture sandwich... And my favorite baked good is the blueberry scone with lavendar icing or the chocolate banana muffin. Keep it up guys!

Nice and cool place to sit and relax. Im not much of a coffee drinker but my wife is, so I sat down with her and enjoyed the ambience. I know its a coffee and tea place, but I wish they at least had some kind of fountain pop or something. It definitely has more of a hipster, and healthy food vibe/atmosphere.

I was a little skeptical when I walked in, but this is likely my new lunch spot when I am in the area! I had the sweet potatoe sammy sandwich and omgosh!!! Amazing!! It wasnt busy when I came in and took about 10 minutes to get my food, which is very reasonable for what I ordered. Prices are reasonable and food tastes fresh, wholesome, and yummy!! I will definitely be back!

The café has very strict covid-19 protocols, some of them do not even make sense at all, I bought a coffee while waiting for my lunch to be made, I was standing up 20 feet away from the cashier no one around I started to drink my coffee, the cashier and another worker told me is not allowed to drink coffee or eat inside this establishment notice it was COLD outside. I dont think Im going back for two reasons the first one is I waited 25 minutes for a burrito, the second one they made me feel not welcome, they going too far with the covid-19 protocols so its almost uncomfortable to go there, the places totally empty now :(.

Root is a great place to have lunch with your friends. Weve gone there a lot and have always had good food. The combination of ingredients is interesting and tasty. Though Im not vegan, they have many vegan choices and the ones Ive had were delicious and filling. Food is always fresh, staff is friendly and well-informed about the menu choices and ingredients, and the restaurant and bathrooms are clean. I like their eco-friendly choices and way of running things. They have a lot of interesting teas and beverages as well. Root is a great place to eat that has healthier choices than most.

We stopped by for an evening tea. Covid protocols look good! Plus they gave us some extra bananas they had.

First time customer! I went with friends to have lunch. It is a vegan place. They have lots of food to choose from. I had the root wrap and mushroom soup. I loved the wrap and so did a friend. In fact all of us like the food. The place reminds me of a beatnik hangout. You order at the counter and they bring out the food. The food server was very nice and polite. My only complaint is the tables are a little crowded. Now, I dont know if its like that all the time or if they moved tables to have a small business come in and display and sell there wares. I would definitely go back!

Not impressed. Went there today on a whim to support small business & get a simple iced coffee. First off, I felt ignored by the guy running the register. He was doing anything he could to not call me over. Then, they had people fixing something inside. One did not have a mask on.Didnt even ask if Id like cream & sugar.Will not return.

This was my first time here with my family, no greeting, just asked us what do you want. While we sat down to wait, they instructed us to keep our masks on, and then told us to wait outside because they only allow 3 people inside. It was pouring rain with a total of 8 people smashed under their tiny awning outside the door, waiting for our food, while there was plenty of space inside to social distance. We waited 20 minutes after they told us they would bring us our food, they didn’t. Had to go back inside for the food and then when we got back to our car drenched from the rain, we realized they didn’t give us any silverware to eat with or napkins. The sauce for the buffalo melt was unappetizing like solidified oil and the spicy bowl had no sauce at all, but by this point we were not running back in the rain to go back into the cafe to deal with the unfriendly staff and receive nothing that was going to help our expirence or the taste of the food.

This place feels like a home away from home. The atmosphere here is incredible; its very authentic and welcoming, and theres a very unique feel to it. It honestly feels like Im eating a home-cooked meal every time I eat here. The restaurant uses mostly locally-sourced ingredients which is cool. This is probably my favorite place in all of Lakewood, highly recommend it

First time here. Excellent chai latte with real black pepper! Had the potato leek soup that was savory and flavorful. The atmosphere is rustic comfortable with different size tables and bar type seating along the windows. Wide selection of breakfast (served all day), wraps, sandwiches, and pizza. Good place for those eating non gluten and vegetarian too. A place to keep coming back to.

Pretty good I guess. If you are vegetarian or vegan they have a lot of options. The staff is nice and helpful. Everything is all natural and healthy. They do have non vegetarian options. They have a good selection of teas. I wish they had fresh pressed juices like berries, apples and other fresh fruits. My friend tried the blackberry smoothie but found the blackberries were overtaken by the other things in it like the spinach. I tried the vegan tuna on gluten free bread. It had raw onions in it which arent my thing. The sweet potatoes with rosemary is so good. I bought some to share with my friends. It was a hit. The neighborhood it is in is nice. One more thing. It would be nice if they sold all natural ginger ale and sparkling juices or water.

I have always been indifferent to Root. I had nothing against it but was never fully impressed wither.Their reaction and way of dealing with COVID has finaalized my feelings.None of the employees wore masks or gloves. They would allow each customer to sign the screen, then they would touch it & immediately make the drink. How is that clean?

Just ate there for a relaxed afternoon meal. This was our first time at the Root Cafe, and as a vegan we loved the food. There were many healthy options to choose from and we had a hard time deciding what to order. We will definitely return again when in the area.

My favorite cafe in Lakewood.Ive been going there since before it was the route, and its always been one of my favorite places to hang out. Im not even vegan and all of their food is consistently excellent. I wish they were open a little later on the weekends to bring some of the artsy, beatnik crowd back, but its still a favorite place to work, gather with friends, and meet new people. we literally moved down the street so that we can be walking distance of The Root.

Great vibe from the moment you step in! The atmosphere is chill the people (other guests) are helpful and cordial. Best of all the staff are great! Our first time there and they took the time out to explain how the seating and ordering worked. The owner was also there and meeting her explained why the restaurant is as inviting and delicious as can be. Top 5 spot for us! Hands down!

The Root Cafe has delicious food and beverage options. A nice cafe feel where people can sit and chat or work remotely. Conveniently located. Metered parking. My faves are the golden milk and the vegan power bowl, but everything Ive tried there has been so delicious!

Delicious, vegetarian friendly, and always bustling with people. Though its bustling, its normally quiet enough that you can have a conversation over whatever delicious item you happen to be eating or drinking at the time. Also a great place to go when youre working on a deadline and need a change of scenery to inspire you.

I have been coming here for years and years. This is a wonderful coffee shop that serves fair trade coffee and delicious vegan and non vegan healthy food and pastries. The staff is lovely and the ambiance you will never find in a chain coffee place. Do yourself a favor and get a Mayan Mocha.

A coffee shop with a crunchy granola vibe. The roasts and drinks are all delicious at an affordable price and they offer a small assortment of baked goods. The seating is comfortable and the building provides great lighting in the daytime. At the time of my visit, unfortunately, there was a mildly unpleasant smell I believed to be emanating from the plants. Otherwise this is a fabulous choice for an excellent local Lakewood coffee shop experience.

When we arrived, we had a great experience with the friendly staff and an even more delightful and positive experience with the taste of the two dishes we ordered (to share). Best cafe no dont about it. I recommend get the Mayan mocha its sweet with a kick of spice. Everyone is always nice and greet u with a smile. Not just the employees but the customers as well. So if your looking for a great play to chill and enjoy a nice cup of coffee the Root Cafe is the place to be.

A very hipster place. Eccentric and weird it would fit right in if it were in Portland. But the coffee was delicious and well made, and the service was exceptional and friendly. I felt very welcome there and the seating is very comfortable, a great place to drink an espresso drink while reading a book or chatting with friends. Good job root!

Amazing staff, great food! They were very empathetic towards my food allergies (dairy and soy), checking with each person who prepared our food to ensure I would be able to enjoy them. The fig and orange muffin was phenomenal, very moist and flavorful! Vegan cheese is available, but I was unable to try it, as it contains soy. The what came first skillet was absolutely delicious, the vegetables were cooked perfectly, and the entire meal was seasoned just right. My husband enjoyed the Everyman (or was it working man?) burrito, he finished every last bite. Be sure to order some kombucha to drink, I had the mint julep and it was great!My husband is typically a meat and potatoes type of person, but he thoroughly enjoyed his vegetarian meal, loved the vegan muffin, and left happy and very full. This coffee shop and restaurant truly has something for everyone!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Yummy Vegan Mayan Mocha, tasty teas, delicious Vegan fare. A place to meet up for board games, or just hanging out. A little loud sometimes, it that is just because they are a popular hang out for everyone. Love the displays of local art for sale also!

Its conveniently located in downtown Lakewood and is an excellent choice for those looking for Vegan, Gluten Free, and Vegetarian menu items. I orderd the banana chocolate muffin it was delicious. The locals recommend the Southwest Tofu Scramble and their Cinnamon roll, as well. Definitely recommend this place!

The Root Cafe consistently creates some of the best espresso and coffee beverages available in the Cleveland area. I dont come often, but every time I do go I wonder why I dont visit more often. This past visit I also indulged in a savory scone. Their food does not disappoint either!

I love that there are resturaunts where you can eat clean like at The Root. I love the menu selection here, i just wished they would season the food more. If you are a person who likes the taste of your food in a bland way this is the spot for you. I just always have to season my food from here more. NOTE: this did not stop me from rating it highly because the food is still good and it is fresh. I love the selection of teas and drinks. The Golden Milk (turmeric milk) here is great. I am a repeat customer and I will keep recommending this place and I will return again and again. The cashiers are great to work with too!

Super cozy yet a good bit of space. Their tea was fantastic and they were very patient with our very vocal toddler. Well definitely be stopping in again!

Relatively chill coffee shop located in the heart of Lakewood. Place is usually pretty busy, but service is pretty fast and the staff are friendly. Food is reasonably priced and pretty good. If youre looking for a coffee shop to work in or just meet up with a friend at, this is a great place to go.

This is a fun and relaxing place. Their coffees and pastries are fantastic. A personal favorite is the iced mocha. The molasses cookie and cinnamon roll are delicious treats as well.
