Simple sandwiches and complex desserts. Waldorf chicken salad was almost as good as home made, 3 out of 5. The Turkey was outstanding, a 5 out of 5 turkey sandwich. The pulled pork was a 4 out of 5 good but I wouldve liked it heated. The raspberry/chocolate mirror cake was decadent 5 out of 5. Tried 6 of the macaroons, poppy was the best BUT I was not impressed by them at all. 2 out of 5. My latte wasnt executed well despite the very expensive espresso machine. Over all the shop was simple and cute but the service was rude.
Yum! It is my favorite French patisserie. Some of that has to do with the fact he is a world renowned pastry chef and some of it has to do with the fact he is also from a small town in Missouri like I am. I am never disappointed and I love that he is in an unassuming pastry shop. Everyone there is happy and works very hard. And if you want to lunch, they do have prepared sandwiches just like they have in France. In addition they have chocolate bars and a rotation of marmalades and more. My friend from Denver said they are the best macaroons shes ever had.
Excellent pastries! I got a chocolate croissant and an “Amber.” I’m not really sure what the Amber was... some kind of hard cookie beautifully topped with a caramel dome. They serve Kaldi’s Espresso 700 coffee. I got the drip coffee, which was decent, but in hindsight, I should have opted for an espresso-based drink. The staff is very kind and pleasant.Edit: My second trip there, I tried the chicken salad croissant and a chocolate pecan cookie. Both were incredible! The cookie honestly doesnt look like much but it was one of the best cookies Ive had in recent memory. It has the nice crispy edges and soft inside of the classic Toll House recipe. Highly recommended!
Amazing bakery and staff, my go-to is their roasted turkey croissant sandwich. Their turkey is NOT dry and super flavorful! The croissant is soft, flaky, buttery and pairs well with the turkey! Their pound cake is also a must, definitely get the chocolate hazelnut. Check them out if you’re in the area!
Once, just by chance, I came to an article about state wise best bakery places in USA in mashed.com, and saw this place for Missouri. Then we thought to give it a try on the next day. We could find many great reviews about chef Nathaniel Reid. We were really got excited to visit the bakery owned by the chef of a Michelin three star restaurant, and we had a lot of expectations. It was a drizzling Saturday noon during this pandemic time. Due to the pandemic situation, only 4 people were allowed to be inside. They are following a strict COVID regulation, which made me feel safe. There was a long queue outside and people coming out were just praising. When we went inside, I was surprised to find that the mousse just looked exactly like that in the pictures. The quiches were excellent. We got Camille, Ruby, Guyana, Genevieve mousses, and loved them all. The cranberry orange financier and pear danish were amazingly delicious. They were inspecting each of the mousses before putting them for sell. Every moment and penny spent there is fully worth. I just love this this place and going to coming back soon with more people with me. I completely recommend this bakery.
A great treat for special occasions, or if you just want to treat yourself! Incredibly friendly and patient staff, but be prepared to wait at peak times. Ordering ahead has been amazing, but I wish they had a proper online store to order from. Ordering ahead is a bit difficult for someone unfamiliar with the bakery or french pastries (hard to know what each thing is)
Some of the flavors I enjoyed, some I didnt as much, which is normal for anyone, then again I was eating a lot of them at the same time. I started to really like them as I tried each component of each dessert separately. The macarons, a different treat I tried, were simple and good. The staff were really kind and the presentation of the items were beautiful.I definitely dont regret taking a quick stop.
Just wow, excellent contactless efforts for Covid issues, super friendly staff, and ridiculously delicious sandwiches and desserts!Tried the spinach mushroom quiche and Im pretty sure its made from clouds and golden eggs...We also got the queen something or other than none can pronounce and that is stupid delicious, really there arent words...The staff are so happy to have jobs, the customer service is top notch. Its so great to have something this high level quality, thank you for being amazing and making our days sweeter!!
I consider myself lucky to live so close to a bakery THIS good. If I was forced to pick my favorite item out of all the delicious treats and pastries they have here, I will always pick up a kouign amann!
Nathaniel Reid is fantastic ! We ordered the maple pull apart, Amber pastry and Smoked Pork Sandwich and they were all delicious. The Pork sandwich was glorious. It was a great decision to try a little bit of everything. The establishment is usually busy so don’t be surprised if there is a long line but it moves pretty quick.
Not many choices. Dont even have cream puffs or eclairs. Was $9 for a cookie and a cup of fluff. I kid you not. The double shot espresso was only foam. Guess if you want to lord it over people and you been there, ok. But there are better places to go. I wont go back.
My first time in was lovely! Scarfed down a kouign amann & iced vanilla latte in the car + brought these three babies home. An offer to warm up pastries would be appreciated; the kouign amann was good, but next level after a brief run in the toaster. Only place Ive had one ever so slightly better was Cellar Door Provisions in Chicago. Impressed by coffee (Kaldis I think), which sometimes falls short at cafes/bakeries centered on other items. Would loveee the addition of a little bistro table on the sidewalk. As for those pictured: far away favorite was the Genevieve with dacquoise sponge & lime/basil curd. Guyana (choc mousse, choc cake) was nice as well; a bit disappointed by the Camille (almond cake, raspberry coulis, lemon mousse), but that may be because it sat for a day and got soggy.Looking forward to trying macarons and savory dishes!
Pastries are of course out of the world and the every time we come in, the quality is splendid! However, the staff is very loud (could barely hear what we were ordering), yelling at top of their voices, forces you to rush your orders, and having more than 12 people in the store. Not expected from a bakery of this class.
Went there for the first time today. Its a nice little bakery with a unique selection of items to try. From macaroons, quiche, sandwiches, little cakes, cookies, and croissants. With a nice drink selection to go with them.Currently seating inside is unavailable, so be sure youre gonna be home soon to drop off the items to keep chilled as their recommended time frame is 45 mins before they melt or go bad. But can last in the fridge for a few good days if youre saving for that special night to enjoy them.My Significant other got 3 cakes - Ruby, Guyana, and Margo, and she says each of them were extremely good. $6 a cake is worth it. She also got two sets of two Macaroons, Poppy Flower and Sicilian Pistachio.I got the Double Chocolate Brownie and a croissant. Which, omg, are worth it.
Stopped in to this bakery while in town last weekend after seeing all the hype. Its cool to find a fancy bakery in a small, unassuming little strip mall. My kind of place. Theres more parking down a hill on the side of the parking lot if theres not enough out front. When you come into the shop, you can order at the attractive glass counter where all the goods are displayed. There was ample staff to support the customer base, and they all were friendly and polite. It is a bit difficult to see whats available if the line in front of you is blocking the case, so I felt a bit like I was inconveniencing everyone by staring into the case when I got up to it, but we short folks gotta see before we can order! Lol.They were fairly busy in the early afternoon (~1 or 2 PM iirc) and had sadly run out of some of my mainstays -- I was really hoping for an almond croissant. I settled for two chocolate croissants instead (one for me, one for parents), as well as a kouign-amann to try.Fiancé got a pulled pork sandwich of some sort on a croissant and a brownie.Prices are a little high but given the reputation of the bakery as well as the current crazy inflation, I give it a pass. The goodies were pretty varied in terms of quality, in my opinion. My parents and I thought the croissants were rather dry and didnt have a ton of chocolate, but when I gave the remaining 3/4ths to fiancé he declared it pretty good and claimed he had plenty of chocolate to taste. So maybe my parents and I just got really unlucky and wound up eating the part of the croissant with minimal chocolate distribution.Fiancé was underwhelmed with the pork sandwich. He liked the bread it was on, which is good -- this is a bakery, after all -- but found the pork overly salty and greasy, even as pork goes. On the other hand, the brownie was a solid brownie: moist, with very rich dark chocolate flavors. The best thing to me was definitely the kouign-amann. Id never had one before but I really enjoyed it. Super buttery, flaky crust and a pleasantly sticky sweet flavor. Really enjoyed that and looking forward to trying one at the French bakery back home. Excellent stuff.Overall, Id come back for a kouign-amann or perhaps to try a different pastry, although my expectations were not quite met this go-around.
The sweets are great, but dont miss out on their sandwiches either. The chicken salad is especially good!
Beautiful, flakey, buttery pastries! If you are looking for the real thing, NR Bakery is it. Yum. Perfect quiche. Sandwiches looked fantastic, but havent try (yet). Everything is generously sized, too.
I would give this six stars if I could.Nathaniel Reid produces some of the best pastries I have ever eaten. It compares to and surpasses bakeries in larger cities and even many in Europe. Truly, everything Ive tasted from the croissants and kouign amman to the sandwiches and fine desserts have all been exceptional. I look forward to picking up a box of pastries when I visit my family in town and hope it lasts the week I return home.
Located in Kirkwood, Nathaniel Reid Bakery is the eponymous home of a former Las Vegas Pastry Chef, and with Le Cordon Bleu training plus stints at The Ritz and Joel Robuchon on his resume the baked goods set a high standard that have even landed Chef Reid a James Beard Foundation Semifinalist nomination. Now a destination for St. Louisans for over three years, the Bakery’s spot in a non-descript strip-mall seemingly out of place until one passes by the area’s most luxurious shopping center en route, it was just after Reid’s 7:00am opening that shelves were found half-stocked, a two day Thanksgiving break necessitating additional prep-work, though neither that fact nor heavy rains stopped a steady flow of traffic.Fairly basic in layout, a kitchen behind glass hard at work while clerks gathered and boxed customer orders, it was after perusing items including Chocolates and housemade Jam that an order was composed, five items tallying $19.80 and first bites of an “Apple Pie” Croissant more than justifying the cost with impressive layers of lamination surrounding Fruit and Streusel.Moving next to an Oatmeal Raisin Cookie, simple but well crafted with a soft center and crispy rim, fans of Brittany’s famous Butter Pastry will be happy to know Nathaniel Reid’s Kouign Amann compares favorably to America’s best while Monkey Bread termed “Pull Apart” and the Almond Croissant made with ground Nuts instead of Frangipane are both enjoyable, without being too sweet.
So lucky to have this award winning bakery within 5 minutes of home!
Great service. Clearly dedicated customers. Delicious food.
Best Breakfast Croissant Sandwiches EVER! Melt in your mouth delightful! We drive 30+ miles - WORTH IT!!
I really love the Bakery! I recommend more baked items that are flour based . Many of the larger items are made from mousse. I love the presentation but Mousse based items are not as transportable and more difficult to cut if you are in a hurry ! Otherwise I give it A Plus .
The absolute BEST bakery you’re going to find in STL. The pastries are better than what I remember eating in France! Highly recommend the 4 cheese honey focaccia.
I recently stopped on a Friday afternoon to purchase some cookies for a gathering that we were going to on Saturday. I purchased a dozen Chocolate Chip cookies. The cookies were delicious just the perfect amount of chocolate chips in every bite. The cookies were crisp so great to share with others.
The pastries were the best!! Had the chocolate almond croissant. You could taste the chocolate throughout. Plenty of almonda.
Today was my first visit. always try petite pain au Chocolat - chocolate croissant - wherever they are sold because if I know one thing, its the special flour, crust, etc that make those unique to France. Not sure if I am correct, but these are the closest I have ever had anywhere in this country, to date. mind u, I have not experienced NY or San Francisco or DC... yet. tres Bien, chef. merci for the memories as my senses were in France with every bite. now, what to try next? and the chocolate milk is divine, as well. yum!!!
It goes without saying that the food at Nathaniel Reid deserves 5 stars. My review is instead about the service...which is also 5 star! Recently, I placed an order for Mothers Day and hit a bit of a hiccup with the confirmation/order cut-off process. I shot a quick email to the bakery team really just to let them know that I was bummed with how it went; didnt expect to hear back. To my surprise, I received a very genuine response from the team and a kind offer to resolve the issue. I worked with Bryn, who was understanding and accommodating. At a time when I can imagine they are beyond swamped with Mothers Day orders, it really meant a lot that Bryn took the time to reach out via phone and email to get in touch and resolve my concern. Thank you, Chef Reid and team!!
I come for the Kouign-aman, I stay for everything else. The pastry here is magical, and worth any wait in line you may have.
One of my favorite food stops in STL. The chefs are passionate about what they produce and it shows. Consistently awesome pastry!
The prices here are on the upper end for a pastry shop as I think of it. But the food is absolutely worth it. The sandwich menu is not very long but will satisfy anyones tastes. The flavors are more to the savory side than the sweet. A chocolate lover will be encouraged toward hazelnuts rather than flooded with sugar. My only complaint is the lack of seating. A window bar with 8 or so stools is all you get. No tables or area to enjoy the delicacies. Perfect place to splurge on a birthday cake or treat but not for the sit and gather after church crowd.
Delicious bakery with a great selection of macarons, sandwiches, croissants, cookies, and more. Everything is super fresh and absolutely delicious!
An excellent bakery! Great selection and reasonable prices. All fresh and delicious baked goods.
Very good! I would have shared a photo but it was gone before I had time to think about sharing...sorry (kinda). I recommend Jarmo (pistachio cake) & the turkey croissant sandwich!
Absolutely delicious! Had the roast beef sandwich and apple danish for lunch recently. Enjoyed the horseradish spread on the bread and the crisp flakiness of the pastry. Customer service was excellent. Will definitely be back in the near future!
For all the hype, simply under-impressed. Bought croissants for Mothers Day; overbaked, dried out, not flaky and lightly crusted as they should be. Had my share of them in 40 plus years of travel and near the bottom of the list. Pricey at $3+ ; would not have been an issue they quality was there, butbin this case, a waste of money..Will go back to traditional French bakery, not planning on a return trip.
This place is phenomenal! Its easy to overlook, as its hidden in a little Kirkwood plaza, but youd be making a huge mistake if you passed it by. Ive been to Paris, and the incredibly flaky croissants here are the closest to French perfection Ive tasted since. Their pastries are like pieces of artwork. They almost look too good to eat, but once you stop taking pictures and finally dig in, youll be hit with a wave of unexpected textures, flavor combinations, and decadence that you wont find in any regular dessert. I cant rave enough about how skilled the pastry chefs and bakers are here. My only regret is that I didnt give Nathaniel Reids a try sooner!
Amazing. More so being in the US.
Welcome to macaron heaven! While they have the traditional size delicacies, they also have an oversized treat pictured here. The macaron had the perfect crisp when you cut through the top layer. Inside is a beautiful raspberry preserve with fresh raspberry and a mousse that is to die for. Just the right balance of sweet and bright flavors.
NRB is the best bakery in STL! The croissants are absolutely delicious, the texture and flavor is always spot on. Their almond croissant is my absolute favorite as far as pastries go, and the sourdough bread is so addictive, sometimes Im afraid Ill eat a whole loaf in one sitting! Its just so good. The NRB team is super professional, and everyone is so nice and helpful!
Wish they opened at 7am for those who workOther than that,,,WOW..fabulous
No cakes or cupcakes??? Everything looks so delicious and Im sure it is I cant wait to visit this place.
Wonderful. Great strong coffee and pastries.
Absolutely love this bakery. The kouign amann is absolutely perfect, and the breakfast sandwiches are to die for. We go here often on the weekend!
This place is spectacular. You can purchase the most delicious jellies and sweet treats here. They also have quiche or lunch sandwiches which makes it the perfect place to stop at almost any time of day. Highly recommend!
Delicious! Ordered quiche for New Years Day, and it was fantastic. Bread pudding was also excellent. Looking forward to trying more options. Extremely impressed with covid precautions as well.
Ive been so excited to try this place. They have solid social distancing rules and a great selection. Will be 100% returning!
Incredible pastries, but the staff is not always aware of the particular options on a given day.
If you love Croissants, do yourself a favor and go to Nathaniel Reid Bakery. Their croissants are huge, buttery and flakey and perfect. So far, I’ve only tried the butter croissant, but I look forward to trying everything else.
Best bakery around! Voted #1 sandwich in Missouri. Everything fresh each day and scrumptious. Salads, quiches, bakery items, coffees, etc., GO!!!
Great pastry, bread, and coffee. A wonderful place to visit.
This is a delicious bakery. The food is fresh and they also have jams, chocolates, etc that make great gifts. This is a full-service bakery and they definitely fill a niche that has been missing for a while in St. Louis. Their pastries are fantastic, and they have so much more than that! We are fortunate to have such a wonderful bakery!
Impeccable hospitality and service and fresh pastries and sandwiches. LOVE THIS PLACE. Cakes that look like works of art. A St. Louis masterpiece.
Seemed like a nice place but when i ask for apple pie and regular pound cake they looked at me like i had two heads..i misunderstood i thought it was a bakery
Pastries are good. Macaroons are okay. Be prepare for longer lines.
Took the whole Family from Florida to Tennessee. The friendly knowledgeable staff helped us at every turn, the gracious owner greeted us with interest in our selections. We loved every morsel!!!. We as a group tried everything from the French pastries to the coffee, from the sandwiches to the macroons and every bite was prepared with excellence!!. This is one place in Saint Louis you need to experience.
Incredibly talented! They have exceeded my expectations on every cake order with unique requests and the cake flavors are delicious. Highly recommend!
Good place for coffee. Sadly, many places in Kirkwood arent designed to be COVID compliant due to the dining areas size. Good access to public transit. If someone wants to go to this place on the bus to pick up a cake, its served by MetroBus route number 57.
Delicious food! Great service!! And I loved all the safety precautions they took during this COVID-19 pandemic.
The best croissant you will ever have, especially the chocolate almond one. Very high quality bakery items. My absolute favorite place to get a sweet treat, nothing better out there in my opinion.
Best bakery in St. Louis. My personal favorite is almost croissant 🥐☕
I’m filing a complaint discrimination because my son worked there for four weeks washing dishes by hand with no dishwasher and they gave him some lame excuse two weeks ago and why he wasn’t getting paid and now all the sudden they lost his tax information? How illegal is that so I’m reaching out to everybody I’m getting an investigator and discrimination wages I’m doing everything I can do this is not 1920s and they’re not gonna get away with it guarantee. And we know the reputation of Kirkwood the reputation favors the whites and dislikes people of color so we know that already
Everything is delicious and beautiful!
Yes your favorite bakery is still open! Please be patient because they are following the guidelines for working with half of usual staff. There wasn’t quite the usual selection of their favorites, but the case was really pretty fully stocked, impressive given the circumstances right now. Everyone kept a respectful distance from each other. Since I am fortunate enough to still have income coming in, I see it as A good thing to do if I can do it with minimal exposure to support my favorite small businesses out there and keep them going through this difficult time! Thank you for making the effort to stay open Nathaniel and crew!
There are not many great bakeries in St Louis, but this is one of the best anywhere. The sandwiches are simple delights that remind me of Europe. The pasteries are buttery treasures. The staff is always nice. I rarely give 5 stars, and highly recommend.
Great food, great staff, great place all around! Highly recommended!!
Amazing food. Only been here a couple times so far, but the breakfast pastries are some of the best I have ever tasted in my life. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and its been a pleasant experience each time Ive been there. Ill definitely be visiting this place a lot.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff, amazing pastries, and cakes that look so good they dont even seem real. Easily the best pastries in Saint Louis. Assume youll take things to go since seating is minimal.
Wow...as good as anything I have ever consumed in Paris.
Great, friendly service, menu items are exquisitely prepared
Best food! Even their service is incomparable! Dining here is worth it and really lived up to my expectations! Perfect to recommend to close friends and workmates!
Theres this circular flaky, sweet pastry. Its $4. They usually sell out. Get it, son.
The best tasting food I have ever tasted. Staff members were fantastic. Helped me pick out a perfect valentines dessert. Also purchased two sandwiches. They were the best sandwiches I have ever had.
I would sell my soul for the ginger cookie recipe! Crispy edges, but chewy deliciousness.
Bad business policy. We got there by 350 and they would not let us wait in line. It is not a customer friendly place any more
Confection masterpieces that are almost too pretty to eat. They have some brunch type food options that are best to-go as there is limited and crowded seating. They are happy to accommodate requests of all types with enough notice. I would love to see this place become a STL staple and possibly franchise to other locations (hopefully with better seating).
I was blown away by the quality of the products I bought. It was the best I have ever tasted. I wish you had a larger sitting area. I purchased 2 types of sandwiches (Turkey and Beef) and the chocolate mousse cookie dessert. I definitely will be coming back and sharing this secret place with all my family.
Mouth watering food and desserts! Extremely helpful and nice staff!
