On 7/18/2020 we had an oil change and tire rotation done on our car. I thought it was a simple service and not much could go wrong. Well, I found out what could go wrong. A year later, we got a flat tire and while attempting to change the tire, we discovered that all of the studs on the tire had been stripped and we had to have the car towed to our mechanic because the spare was unusable. Our mechanic explained that the lug nuts had been over torqued and the studs were not only ruined, the entire wheel hub needed to be replaced for a cost of $574. Not only that, the other wheel hub on that side of the car would need to be replaced as well. We had our mechanic replace the wheel hub on the one side so we had a working car and went to CarX to talk to them about the situation. The first manager tried to take the damaged part from us and as we later discovered, never actually made any record of our complaint. The second (the first one was no longer employed) manager that we spoke to agreed to fix the second hub, but told us we had to go to corporate to get the cost of the repair by our mechanic refunded. several weeks later, we received a refund of the original cost of the oil change and tire rotation ($104). The third (the second manager was no longer employed) told us we had to deal with corporate. An email we sent was not responded to. Avoid this company and specific location at all costs.

I had an excellent experience. I had my tires installed and an oil change.Cody is a wonderful manager. Friendly and efficient! I highly recommend them. They are a little short staffed but I hope they get more great mechanics!

You do have to book time with them. They are fast, Nice and timely. I once ask for air tire pressure check during winter since the one on gas station are frozen and help me as soon as they could so far I have a great experience here. Great place.

Great service here! I came in without an appointment and they were able to replace both back brakes in less than an hour for a decent price. Definitely recommend!

They barely acknowledge you, give you little information. While on the phone they say they have time just for you to get there and be completely ignored. They probably don’t even notice all the customers that just walk away after being ignored.

This place is a joke! I was quoted around over $1000 dollars to get my brakes done. Josh was even nice enough to tell me, this is just for the parts, we arent charging you labor. If you get this line, or before going there at all, I would look at the prices of car parts at Advanced Autoparts, which is right next door (though Id price compare online) and call around. There are absolutely better options than this.

Joshua went above and beyond to assist with a tire issue while we were in Iowa City for a family member’s upcoming emergency surgery. His actions made a very crazy day just a bit better. Been awhile since I have received that level of customer service. Thank you again Joshua!

Called for a Saturday morning appointment on a Tuesday. Arrived at the agreed upon time and was told that I wasnt acrually given an appointment, but I could leave my car there and then come back seven hours later to pick it up. If I hadnt been led to believe Id scheduled an appointment that might have worked, but since I was, I didnt make arrangements to be without a vehicle for seven hours.Just be forthright in the future? Doesnt seem that difficult.

Josh at the Iowa City Car-X & Auto is an outstanding manager and communicator. We’ve seen him go above and beyond several times this year and our lives were improved because we chose Car-X in Iowa City and Ames! If I could get cool pictures to display you’d see a first time car buyer, my college-age daughter, be her happiest because Josh swooped in with his excellent staff and patched up what was wrong, including the engine (just a little matter). Brian and Josh went above and beyond. We felt like we were family when we worked with Josh and his staff.

Very disappointing franchise of CarX. Back home my CarX is great, these guys are jokers. Told me if I was worried about an active leak to get a 2nd opinion at Firestone, but it “may just be wet from the work they did” replacing power steering lines 3 weeks prior. Dodge St Tire&Auto found the issue within an hour and have WAY better customer service.It’s hilarious that the “response from owner” to bad reviews is to contact the general CarX customer service line. Looks like they are not looking to fix their problems anytime soon. I’ve found my new shop now, will not be back.

Manager of the store has been very helpful to me, going above and beyond on service. Prices are alright, but finding a place that can do good work fast makes this place amazing in my book.

These guys got me back on the road an hour before they closed. My car needed help and they got me right in, with my car there in under 10 minutes. All of the other places had at least a two day wait. Gave me an hour and a half time estimate, they got it done in a third of the time. Cant sing their praise enough. I got to go home and see my kids instead of having to stay in a hotel for the weekend.

Josh the manger here has no customer service skills. He is rude and not friendly. Dont reccomend coming here If josh is working. Terrible service for him. But make sure and stop in and have saidreck one of the mechanic guys that work here. Work on your vehicle. He does an awesome job. And also very friendly!

STAY AWAY. Went in to use the oil change coupon from the mailer. Faced massive upsell on all fronts and ended up paying more than I was told on the oil change, plus excessive amounts (4x cost) on air filters and a high price on battery. But at least those I agreed to. What really got me was the $30 SHOP SUPPLY FEE added to the bill with NO NOTICE to me whatsoever.There are plenty of good mechanics in town, no need for this BS.

They are IMPOSSIBLE to schedule an appointment with. Always seem to busy when I actually do go there. Not the best repairs. I had a tire for a year that kept going flat. They said it was fine 3 times....it had a HUGE nail in it. Not cool. I went to Kings in Coralville and they did me right. A little more pricey but 100% quality and they KNOW what theyre doing!

I had just bought a new car and it broke down 2 hours after I bought it. This carx was extremely accommodating and professional well I was having major engine problems. They fixed my engine and my new car works great

I was treated respectfully and professionally. The manager was quite knowledgeable as was his staff. They did not try any funny business or up sale me on things the car did not need.They were quite thorough in their inspection. And gave me insight into things that needed fixed or will need fixed down the road. In my opinion they are very trustworthy and my wife and I look forward to taking in all our vehicles in future.

This is the second time I’ve tried to receive service from here. I had an appointment to have my oil changed. I was told, “we’ll get it in when we can.” I asked about an estimated wait time and the front desk guy always acts like he’s bothered when you ask him questions. I was told it’ll be 2 hours before they get my vehicle in when I had an APPOINTMENT that I was ON TIME for arrival. There’s better options. I shouldn’t have come back just because I got an emailed coupon. Will not try this place again, ever.

They were very nice but the general manager doesn’t care about the safety of their customers. I took my car in for a general check on what’s wrong. The mechanic was very thorough and good through the check but the general manager didn’t tell us that the mechanic found a crack in the frame that was not safe or drivable. The mechanic came out after getting our keys and expressing the seriousness of not driving the vehicle. We have a 1 yr old and a baby on the way which made this very frustrating and upsetting

Fast service, knowledgeable and helpful staff. I brought my car in for an oil change and to have some issued checked out by their staff. The issues turned out to be bigger then I thought, and the staff were very helpful in advising me on how to move forward. Everyone was helpful, nice, and easy to deal with. I would certainly go here again.

One of my car doors cannot open wide, due to a hit and run yesterday. Today the staff at CarX was so friendly and generous. He fixed the fender with a simple tool within minutes. When asked how much, the staff said dont worry about it, and did not charge me at all. It was raining at that time, and a little chilly, but I felt so happy and warm. Thank you so much!!

Well done on oil change, but on the price $80 to get an oil change I felt sorry for that woman I aint been there since 3 months ago till today last time I came in for air I dont know his name but he gonna say to me dont you know thats gas station, I say you say what I heard you Im a grown woman and why the questions he say well you need to try them well I said well Im a customer here and I dont deserve that I was not to happy about today with Josh neither, good luck u rip offs.

These guys helped me out in a pinch and went over and above to fix it quickly! I was in town from out of state for a graduation ceremony and heard a funny noise the day of the ceremony and day before leaving for home. I was most concerned of safety, further damage, or breakdown on my way home. I called them 90 minutes before they closed (and 90 mins before the ceremony) for a simple diagnosis. They squeezed me in to do a quick check, identified the problem in less than 5 minutes. Then even fit me in and got it repaired quickly in time for me to get to the graduation ceremony on time! I’d been here before and always was very satisfied, this was absolutely over and above! I would recommend. Fast friendly service! Thanks guys!

Good service. Staff are very personable. Prices seem competitive. Ive had a good experience twice now, and Ive had a friend who also had a good (and very fast repair) experience. I think Ive found my go-to in town. Only drawback (which isnt really a drawback), is that a ton of other people also seem to feel this way, so Car-X stays busy. Gotta schedule ahead of time if you want in.

The manager Josh don’t have a clue to what he’s doing. He tell you the price after the work is done. The prices are to high. After I left the shop I called around and price the same parts and labor and you wouldn’t believe the difference in the price, he has to make up the prices as he goes because it’s ridiculous. Go somewhere else if you can. This guy Josh WOW . The mechanics are ok know what they’re doing!!!

I use to be wary of chain shops like Carx. However, ever since I met Toby, who is in charge of this location currently, I feel very comfortable and confident in the service and information I receive. He gives clear answers and very reasonable recommendations should you need to budget and prioritize the work you need done on your car. I now understand why its important to schedule an appointment. Theyre so good at what they do that theyre always busy!

When I called ahead to make an appointment about twenty minutes before closing time, I had no idea they would see me right away. The manager at the front desk, Toby, was extremely helpful. They got my car fixed up right away. This was my first time visiting this car repair shop and I was very happy with the quality of the service and the helpfulness of the staff. I will definately be taking my car back there in the future if I have issues with it.

Had an amazing experience at Car-X! I came in needing new tires and they were very helpful in finding the tires that worked well with my budget, need and quality desired! They didn’t stop there, they offered me the Drive Card which made it easier for me to get tires on my car without having to worry about a huge downpayment. I Will continue to take my car there as the staff is friendly and honest, which is hard to come by now a days. Tomorrow is the very 1st horrible day of the winter with temperatures dropping 20 below. My car wouldnt start 3 days ago but the jump was very long which let me know that I had a dead cell in my battery. Went to Advance Auto and purchased new battery however they couldnt get the bolt off. He called Car-X and they said bring it over. He installed battery, put air in my very low tires, and windshield wiper fluid without hesitation. I am very Grateful and happy with the prompt and professional service I received. Great service and very friendly staff. I was having engine troubles and called to make an appointment. They got me in that afternoon and recommended a towing service that was very cheap. I use Car-X for all of my oil changes as well and will continue to go back!

Coming into a shop as a female I have learned to be wary after multiple horrific experiences at dealerships for cars still under factory warranty. I’ve also had very mixed experiences at other local chain stores. Toby and his staff are, without exception, GREAT! I had to go there because my hose for the washer fluid was severed and leaking. They took me out to show me specifically what was wrong, didnt try to pressure me into a bigger repair than necessary and then ended up not charging me for their service. Im not sure if it was because the part took too long to get there or what, but I really appreciated their assistance and good customer service!!

These guys are not honest. Had a screw in front tire. Manager told me it was unrepairable. Also said my tread was below safe level. Told me I should replace both front tires, get balance and alignment for $500-600. . I went to discount tire in Coralville- they repaired tire for free. Dont go to Carx esp if you are a single woman. They must think we are brainless.

Went to car x today to receive a diagnosis for my ac. Results came back that everything was fine to receive a recharge. Once done they tell me it is my compressor and there goes 160 down the drain! Another 1200 to fix the compressor and they will waive the 160! What a rip off!

2019 - Place has gone bad since change of managements.I came for a regular maintenance, the manager tried to squeeze extra $$$ on expensive oil and 100$ coolant replacement. Gut feeling is last manager got sacked for being too honest with people.2018 This is what I wrote: (4-star review)This place is so attentive and staff is so helpful, I was so lucky to run into them when my car got stuck! They replaced my alternator with a lifetime warranty, and fixed a brake pad for close to half the price offers others gave me. Tobi is the best.

Today February 4, 2020-- I made an appointment to change oil. The appointment was offered to me -- 4 pm. I left work early got to CarX at 4, waited 15 minutes and was told Sorry, we cant change the oil until 6 p.m. -- we will try to squeeze you in. Really? Squeeze me in? Wait 2 hours for an oiI change I made an appointment for? Why offer appointments if you are going to blow customers off? And then ask me if I want another appointment? You didnt keep this one!!! I will say it wasnt Josh so that may have been part of the problem. I cant decide if I should go back -- this could have been handled better. 1 StarI have had vehicles that need lots of fixes and they would print out what needed to be done and help me piece my car together. Today Josh made it work--got the tire fixed and on my way. Thanks!

I took my car to Car-X because my front drivers side tire was leaking air. Found out I needed to get a new set of tires (not a surprise). Toby showed me how bad my tires really were. Had my car serviced at Billion recently, and they never said a word about my tires... Toby and his team were wonderful! They worked with me on the price. There were no hidden fees, and everything is spelled out in their estimate. Love this place!!

My cousin made an appointment to have her car services. She showed up early for her appointment and her slot was given to an elderly White woman who was a walk-in. My cousin was told to wait in her vehicle for the next available time slot...which she did. But, on the way out, she notice an older black woman sitting outside in the grass waiting for service completion on her vehicle. They were told to sit outside while the White woman remained inside. Racial maltreatment if ever Ive heard of it!

Ive been here several times, different cars, different issues, and have never been disappointed. They are courteous, thorough, and did not try to upsell me on things I didnt need.I reduced a star only because they may be a titch pricier than some small-business mechanics, but its worth it.

I went in for an oil change and the guy at the counter was very short and rude with me. Another customer had called (on speaker) with a concern about his car and the guy abruptly hung up on him after the one question as he was about to ask a follow up question. I ended up cancelling appointment and going elsewhere.

My headlight went out on a road trip and Car X popped up for a place where I could get it fixed. The customer service was great and a stressful situation was turned into something so easy. Highly recommend if for any car service!

I cant believe how rude the manager is. They gave me a diagnosis on my car, I took it for a second opinion to another Mecanic turns out what they said was not the issues my car was having. Not only were they going to charge me si much but they werent even going to fix my car they wanted me to keep coming to charge me more. How is this great service when you rely on an honest person to give you correct information to fix your car.

We sent our college student to Car X in Iowa City thinking it was a reputable national company. She had a tire that was low occasionally, and her trunk would not latch shut. Being 2 1/2 hours from her, we couldnt assess the situation. They told her she had 2 nails in 2 tires and was going to need 2 new tires and an alignment for $441. The tires were new before she went to school. My husband called the shop while she was still there and was told that they quoted her $350 for 2 new tires and an alignment because one of the nails was too close to the sidewall to fix. My husband instructed him to fix the other tire, check on the trunk, and we would figure out how to deal with the tire he couldnt fix. A little later, they went out and told my daughter that the entire trunk latch would need replaced and she was free to go. He didnt charge her anything, but didnt tell her which tire, if he fixed one, or anything. We had her drive home the next day so we could look at the trunk and have our local guy fix the tire. Turns out, the emergency release on the trunk had gotten pulled and just needed to be pushed back in. A new trunk latch was not necessary. In addition, our local guy fixed the other tire for $18. So, a $350-$450 job became $18 plus the cost of gas. We will not be returning to any Car X. What a shame that they think they need to take advantage of young women in this way.

I took my Hyundai Sonata to CarX. It was making a noise that I had been told previously by the dealership that was not a cause for concern. Toby said it certainly was a cause for concern and to take it back to them. So, I took it back. It needed a new engine. The dealership replaced the engine as it was still under warranty. Had Toby not told me that, the warranty would have expired and I would have had to replace the engine. I am so so so grateful to him. Also, they recently replaced my brakes but did only the front: if it aint broke dont fix it! was what I was told. I was also grateful for this. I can trust these guys and they will get my return business. As a single woman, this is a rare find. Thanks, Toby and the folks at CarX.

Life saver! My lug nuts were coming loose. I pulled in and they took care of me and had me on my way in minutes. No charge! Very friendly. Truly great guys.

My sister and grandma came to town to visit and my grandmas dashboard was saying that the her tires were low. So we pulled in and asked them to look at them for us and they pulled it in and put air in them free of charge. Awesome customer service!!

As a single female I always judge my encounters in the traditionally male world by how dad they act. The front desk was 10/10 Dad-esque. I didnt have to wait for service at all and they quickly found the problem and fixed it. Highly recommend.

One star because I could get a quick appointment. That being said, theres not much I dislike more than dishonest businesses. I came in with my Nissan because one of the tires was punctured by a screw; lo and behold, Car-X took a look at it and all of a sudden the valve stem is also broken and needs to be replaced for..$75. LOL. I didnt buy it (valve stem replacements cost like $50 tops), and after asking a few questions, it was apparently the entire TPMS system in that tire that was faulty and needed replacing? Or was it just the little aluminum casing around the stem? Guy at the front desk wasnt sure! Yeah okay, buddy. Taking advantage of customers is gross, and a quick way to make sure I never recommend Car X to anyone.(And to top it all off, they forgot to reset the TPMS sensor, and my dashboard light went into a frenzy a few hours after I left! I was on the highway and terrified Id had a full blowout!)

The customer service at this CarX is amazing. I’m from DesMoines but in IowaCity for a family members hospital stay. In the record breaking cold my new back tire started leaking. The manager of the store, patiently called a couple of CarX stores in DesMoines to help find where the tires were purchased to save me money on a warranty part. Without an appointment he fit me in and now I can worry only about my family in the hospital. While I was waiting, two more people pulled in and asked him to put air in their tires. He was SO nice!! This is something he is not getting paid for, but happily took care of everyone!!!
