Took my jeep tuffys about a week ago because my window would roll down and not up. I told them I thought it was a wire short because I had recently changed my car speakers. Motor, regulator, and switch were all fine like I assumed. They told they had to charge me 160 to pull my door apart to further inspect. I told them I thought the problem was on the wire connecting to the switch and not in the door. They told me it would still be 160 to test the wire connecting to the switch. I proceeded to tell them no and took in down the street to get it looked at. The other car shop confirmed it was the wire connecting to the switch and they would replace it. In the end I saved myself from a bs charge of 160$ to test the wire at tuffys. Trust me this place schemes.

The amazing woman behind the counter has the best customer service skills Ive ever encountered! She made me feel valued as a customer and a human! I’ve come across some hard times and she “bought” my business for a lifetime! They also preformed some very costly repairs and a much lower price then I expected and discounted my services even further so that they were “more affordable” although still very costly! I will forever recommend them to all in the Iowa City area!!

Brought my car in to fix the a/c. Charged me about $900 to fix it. When it still didnt work, I called them up and the manager called me a liar and hung up on me. Brought my car somewhere else and they told me that my freon was even about 1/3 less than it needed to be.

I called from Amsterdam, Netherlands in Europe and through AAA Campus repair referred me to Tuffy. And it was well worth it. Alex made time to provide quality service!. His empathy made that my family was taken care of in this Pandemic changed times in a new reality traveling from LA to Indiana, where hotel stay is no longer an option he worked hard to send them safely on their way again. This happened several years back ( I hope things have changed for better ever since). One old car of mine broke down around 2015, and was towed to Tuffy (on the recommendation of the AAA guy). The next day Tuffy shop did find the problem with the car (engine fuel pump), recommended very expensive repair for the problem (after waiving the inspection fee if I chose to do the repair at Tuffy), and aggressively recommended must-do other expensive repairs (like 1000~2000 dollars) for other parts of the car (these repairs were not exactly urgently needed). I figured the repair was way overpriced, and I did not feel comfortable doing the repair under this predatory business environment. So I wanted to tow my car to another place for repair, and Tuffy would not let that happen and threatened to charge me very hefty inspection fees if I did so. After very long and difficult conversations with the manager, they finally agreed to only do the necessary repair, and left out some excessive charges. Eventually I took their offer (the eventual price was reasonable), and the mechanic workers were nice to me, and finished the repair.Immediately after the repair, I found out that my oil tank could only take 9 gallons of gas instead of the 12 gallons it could have taken before! I am reasonably sure (not totally sure, to be fair, but this happened immediately---first time refueling the car after the repair--- and only after the repair) this malfunction was because of something wrong with the repair. I drove back to Tuffy for one visit, they could not figure it out why, and said everything was normal with the repair.Tuffy might not be a bad place to repair your car (I sensed that the workers there were nice and hard-working), but my experience of that one time was not exactly pleasant.

I have been going to Tuffy for the last 2.5 years and can’t say enough good things about their service and reliability. They consistently go above and beyond to help, and always make every effort to make sure I don’t overpay for any services - even if that means recommending I take the car to the dealership to try to get something covered under warranty. Trustworthy, reliable, and excellent customer service.

I have been coming to here multiple times through out the past few years. Adam always has great communications. He provides advice and services that I feel like I can trust at an reasonable price. Appointments are easy to get and they get the work done faster than the dealership I have been to.

My fiancé and my go to For auto repair and maintenance. Their prices are honest and fair compared to the competitors. I told them not to try to sell me things when going in for an oil change and they were very respectful and honest. If we have an issue or feel a price is unfair they will work with you and walk through it. Don’t waste time elsewhere! We drive all the way from North Liberty to go to Tuffy because it is worth it!

My sprinter van broke down Iowa city iowa. I have to call many repair shops to find one that could take the job. I came across Tuffy Auto service I spoke with Adam and he assured me the his diesel tech David would defiantly handle the job and see that I got back on the road. In four hours they fit me in installed a diesel particulate filter and repaired a muffler and I was back on the road. Adam also recommended other things that inneed to get done to be 100%. Though I have spent many hours and dollars here, the staff has been very helpful in making my experience the best it could be. Michael and Adam are both very friendly, easy to talk to, communicative, accommodating, and empathetic. Michael tried to help me out as much as possible financially too. I appreciate all the work all these guys do! I will continue to come here as long as Im in the area, no doubt.

I have always trusted my car to Tuffy Iowa City. I wouldnt even dream of taking my car elsewhere. I am helped in a timely manner and the team members have always taken the time to explain what and why items need to be fixed (if any). Their work is always top notch and I always leave feeling like I am driving a new car. Prices are prices people.. there isnt much anyone can do about that. But trust me their work is top notch!!

I’ve been coming here for years and have always felt they try to talk me into things I don’t need. I’m not knowledgeable in mechanics, I consult my dad when they tell me what I should do. But the mechanics seem nice so I come back.Went in for oil change today and fuel injector kit/service and they told me I needed new air filter and new rear tires. I heard new tires and focused on that dollar amount I wasn’t expecting going in. Dad said I probably should change them after looking at the pic I sent so I said go ahead.Now I’m looking at my bill and I see oil change, tires, wheel alignment, air filter and fuel injector cleaning. Problem is, I realized I was just in 6 months ago and they changed the air filter. Why on earth are they changing this again?? I just read it’s good from 15-30k miles. I have 35K on my car total, just drive in town. I am disappointed to be taken advantage of, I worry this isn’t the first time.Tuffy, I hope you’re happy with the additional $25 air filter you laid on an already $500+ bill. I was a repeat customer that would have continued paying for service but knowing you take advantage of the naive customer means I’m going elsewhere.

I took my car in to get it fixed for brakes and a couple of other things. A couple months later I was having horrible noise and the driving was not normal. I had to take it to another shop and found that everything they “fixed” was actually fixed improperly and had a massive bill to fix the damage done because of a poorly done job.

Went in for an oil change and inspection and the service was wonderful. Took about 1.5hours on a day they seemed to be short handed, so Im sure it would be faster normally. Adam is great and easy to talk to, explained everything really clearly and thoroughly. Pointed out some issues that could have just been them trying to upsell, but didnt pressure me when I decided not to fix those things the same day. Will definitely be going back!

My collage student was moving into her dorms on a Saturday,when all of a sudden the check engine light came on the truck. We live 3 1/2 hrs away and well she could not drive back home. Took it into Tuffys and she was told to take it in on Monday. This is 4:45 pm and they were about to close. My daughter asked them if she was safe to drive a 3 hrs plus back home. Mr Broderson stayed over and fixed our truck! Thank you for taking care of the issue you are greatly appreciated! I highly recommended!

Went in for an evaluation for my air conditioning in my vehicle, not only did they lie to me about their discount, but did work i asked them not to and charged me anyways. they said they would keep me car until i paid an for the parts and labor put into my vehicle to fix my air conditioning. after repeatedly lying to me and racking up senseless charges for me to pay i finally got my car back and turn on the air condition to find out it doesn’t work. they said i needed a new part that they couldn’t install but still made me pay the price. needless to say this place scammed me. do not go here.edit. they might actually be good. they solved the issue i had for free and were super helpful in the end :) thank u tuffy!!

They were willingness to price-match the competitor is initially what drew me in, but their willingness to go above and beyond by beating the competitors price is what will keep me coming back. We drive older cars. Tuffy has always found a way to keep our vehicles running and a way for us to pay for the repairs.When we first went to them they told us what needed to be done to one of our two cars. We could not afford, even with all their help, all the repairs. The Customer Service Representative outlined what needed to be done most and we started there. When we paid that part down we did more work until it was all done.With their help our family has stayed on the road safely.

I went in to get my oil changed and a flat tire fixed. I needed the flat tire fix more than I needed the oil change. The staff there was more willing to push me out the door and lied to me and said they checked my tire but no leak. Sometimes you actually have to take the tire off to see where its leaking. My mistake was assuming that a professional place like that would already be aware of such. So I got to spend another hour getting my tire fixed.

Having to go to the mechanic is almost never a fun process. This Tuffys makes it just a little bit less horrible. Their service is wonderful and friendly and the free WiFi, water and comfy couch make it all a little better. I would always recommend that someone take their car here for either maintenance or preventive care. They will take care of you and treat you right!

They have the best service with honest people who do their best to keep you safe on the road. Everytime I take my car there it gets gets a complete inspection and they tell you what they find wrong. Only once did my car have to stay there over night but it was finished the next morning. We have had pretty my h the same mechanic work on all our vehicles and hes always letting me take a look at what he sees as an issue and always explaining it in terms I understand. Kudos to the Tuffy crew!!!!

I stopped in to check and see it my engine coolant was going to hold up to the cold weather. The gentleman had to go ask. Quickly they brought my car around. I was in and out, it took about 5 mins. Really awesome job, cannot thank them enough for the help.

Do not go here!!! Went in for a simple fix that should take around ten minutes, they come back after doing an inspection claiming I need to spend $2600 to make my car road safe again. I declined their service took the car to my friend that has been a mechanic for 30+ years only for him to tell me nothing needed to be fixed on the car.Clearly their business model is to try and scam desperate college students! Do not go here.

I dont recommend Tuffys for anything but an oil change. Went in for an oil change to find out my rear 2 tires were bad. They charged me $600 for 2 tires, and another $72 for installation. Only to find out the tires they placed on the car were $400 for 2 at all their competitors after I got home(online and local). The tires that were on my car are actually $300 each, so when I asked if what they were putting on were comparable to what I had I was told yes. I trusted what they were saying, which was a mistake. Contacted the company to see if this could be resolved, to be told by the DM that they were losing money on what I paid. So $900 for an oil change, alignment, and 2 tires and they have the nerve to say I was basically getting a bargain. DM told me I was getting the tires for close to cost, yet other shops can manage to sell them $200 lower? I put my trust in Tuffys to be reasonable in their pricing. Even gave the benefit of the doubt to allow them to correct the situation. I was completely let down by their service. Never again. Charged over $200 compared to their competitors...

Mike Rauhaus was amazing! Hands down the best customer care I have ever had! I don’t know where you found that guy but hold on to him. You don’t find people like him anymore.

This was a very disappointing experience. I called a few days ahead to schedule an oil change for 4:00pm. I arrived on time, and the mechanic told me it would take about an hour. I thought that seemed long for an oil change, but I waited anyways.5:00 rolled around, and one of the workers led me into the garage to go over other work they found that needed to be done, which would total over $2,500. He then proceeded to tell me that they DIDNT GET AROUND TO CHANGING MY OIL, but that would take an additional 20-25 minutes.At this point, I had a meeting at 5:15pm and needed to leave. They wasted an hour of my time and did not even do what I came to have done in the first place.I was given a coupon for a free oil change, but I will not be coming back to this location to redeem it. Very disappointing.

This shop is the worst shop I have ever been to. Not only do they overcharge for service, but they are not competent enough to make basic repairs. I had a service done on my car and when I took it in again recently to a different shop to find out why I had a terrible noise in my front end, I found out that they had performed the job incorrectly which caused even more damage to my car then what needed to be repaired originally.

I got my break lines fixed here. Adam and the other manager were knowledgeable, helpful, and kind. I will definitely be back. 10/10

Its been 1 year since I went in for an oil change and was told that I needed my axle seals replaced ASAP. Courtesy of the free vehicle inspection. He even offered the oil change for free, so you know hes trustworthy. 😉 Except my dad said to hold off on the repair, so I did. 1 year later I still havent had a problem. Perhaps trying to make a few bucks off ignorant college kids in the absence of their parents?? Will not be returning.

I was leaving Iowa City on 9/18 after spending the day with my daughter. I was heading home to Cedar Falls. At the stoplight, my car had lights come on and the power steering died. Lucky for me, I was right in front of Tuffys. I pulled into the lot at 4:45PM and explained my situation. Within MINUTES they had a diagnosis and said they would stay open late if needed to fix my car. They had it completely done and ready to get on the road by 6PM. The manager Craig Ash was so reassuring, explained the warranty on the new alternator & gave me a coupon off the price. I told him I had a daughter in IC, and we were giving her this car. He gave me an oil change punch card and reassured me he had record of this Vehicle now, so she can come to Tuffy;s anytime she needs help. THANK YOU for the quick response yesterday and for going above to ensure our daughter has a place she feels comfortable taking the vehicle. Great job of securing future business! Well done!

I have been using Tuffys for all my auto repair and service since 2008. They are super to work with . Always professional and straight talking. They dont do unnecessary repairs and always explain what was done and why. They have done work for me that includes complex major engine repair and simple routine preventative maintenance.I would recommend them to anyone that wants good, dependable and reliable service.

The Manager Micheal Rauhaus fit me in right away when my car wouldnt start. I had never been there before and they treated me like an old customer. Its hard for me to speak to the quality of the work because I do not know anything about cars but their customer service is fantastic.

One of my wipers was broken so I called and they got me in right away. They didnt have the piece on hand, so one of the workers drove to Cedar Rapids to get the piece for my car and then installed it. They stayed until 5:30 p.m. to help me out even though they closed at 4:00 p.m. Great service and very friendly workers!

Their labor charges are cheaper than most places and you get better quality of service! I will never take my car anywhere else!

Expensive!! Expensive!!! Expensive.!!!! .....especially for students. Things are overpriced and they trick you into repairing what you really dont need to. The staff are nice overall. They are quick and fix your car really well. Just that I dont trust their quotations.

Very friendly staff but unfortunately, this place will do everything they can to test your knowledge of repairs needed to your vehicle...and if they sense you have no knowledge they will upsell/add unnecessary charges to the point of ridiculousness. I’m not from Iowa City but recently bought a used car there. I had a few concerns about the vehicle, so I took it in to stuffy for a pre-purchase inspection. Michael was very accommodating. Got me in pretty quick after I called. They looked everything over very thoroughly. He pointed out the problems and where work had been done on the car previously. He talked to me about the issues that were minor and what may be serious down the road. I thought he was very professional.

Get your oil changed here and leave. Do not buy anything they offer as additional services.They tried to charge me over $200 for an oil change and serpentine belt. That’s over $150 for a belt that costs about $30 and takes 5 minutes or less to replace.I am looking for somewhere new to get oil changed, these guys always try to shake me down.TLDR; when you come for oil change, do NOT buy anything else.

First time customer at the Iowa City Tuffy. Customer service was second to none! Their technicians were thorough, quick to diagnose and resolve the issues I had with my car. I will absolutely return for future service work!

Took my van in because there was a leak and some hard shifting going on with the transmission. They looked at my van thoroughly and gave me a honest and detailed explanation of what was needed. They also did a total inspection and gave me a list of suggested fixes. I did not feel pressured to fix anything and they did not do any uneccesary things that added costs. Id definitely come here again and would recommend it!

Sadly to say this place is a rip off don’t be fooled by the things that they up charge you with that they say needs repair took my car there and they charge me hundreds of dollars and did not fix the problem contact to let them know that they did not fix the problem and the manager there was very rude I was trying to charge me to do more work to figure out the problem took it to another auto shop and they actually fix the problem that I had so be careful taking your car there they are not honest

Can you give 0 stars? They just tried nickel and diming my mother in law into an $1845 bill for a bunch of things she didnt need. Took it into the dealer we bought it from, and he said most of what they were trying to charge for was unnecessary.. he ended up fixing our one small issue with the suspension free of charge. If you dont know a lot about cars, DEFINITELY AVOID THIS PLACE, they will just try and take advantage of you.

One of the managers at Tuffy, Michael, was very helpful. Our car wouldn’t start when we were heading home for the holidays, and he made sure to squeeze us in right away so that we could get home to spend time with family.

As long as lived in this area (over 15 yrs), this was one of the best places to take your vehicle to get honest mechanics along with manager(Ernie has moved on/retired) that would reach out to you and took your concerns in consideration. Dont even remember when a mechanic personally explain what diagnosed(didnt use to be this way).The place is not same. I no longer refer people here and will not take any more of my vehicles here; its a shame to lose long time customers this way. Customers be ware, please read before you sign once work is complete as they do not always explain what you need or omit things that you should know to make the best decision for your self. It is literally about the amount of quick cash flow they can get for the day in sales without regard to customer. Thankfully I found a new home and will pass the word along.

We had to go to Iowa City for some testing and the main belt broke in the car. I googled some places and I liked what I read so I sent the number to my mother while I was at the hospital and she called and he got the car in as soon as we got the car to him and and he got it back to us the same day. All I can say is Thank you so much Adam. We are going tomorrow.

Oil change in under an hour with one person on duty when its busy was good!

My daughter is going to school at the U of I and her car broke down in Iowa City but I couldnt get there to fix it. She called Tuffys and they were fantastic. They helped her get the car towed to the shop, got it in right away, let us know what the problem was, gave us a very affordable estimate and after our approval got the job done fast with no additional charges. When she came home I looked at the work they did and wow what a nice job. I do most of my own work and wouldnt have tackled that one but they did it fast and at a very reasonable price. It is a place I can trust & know that they will take care of us at a very fair price.Thanks

My daughters car had issues when she was driving from Des Moines to Chicago. She had to stop in Iowa City and we reached out to Tuffys to deal with the problem. I can’t say enough good things about the experience. Michael was absolutely amazing, he went above and beyond and getting the car and checked out and fixed in a timely fashion. He kept me apprised of everything going on, he made a bad situation easy to deal with! Can’t thank you enough Michael, I wish there were more people like you in the world!!

They got me on a bad day of travel after a crash. Not only was the checkup on my car thorough but they recognized my need to get back on the road and got me there quickly. Highly recommend.

I would say their check ups are not bad but it is not necessary to do all the long list that they make for you with high costs.The part cost estimates are way too higher than what you can find from internet or main manufacturer of your car.Try to think carefully before accepting their offer to repair your car or taking your car there.

The most expensive auto repair in the area. They might try to upsell you on repairs. But at least you will know your car needs some work. They also can fix just about anything. So thats a plus.

Tuffy is the best auto shop in Iowa City and surrounding community. Every time I have gone in there, the work has been performed on time and if the mechanic noticed something else that needed to be done, he would let me know and how much the cost would be. They will go out of their way to make things right.

I went there for oil change. They recommended for transmission oil flush. I had it as they said.I went there for oil change 3 month later. They recommended for tranmission oil flush again. Because they didnt put on the information that I had last time. They lied! They showed me wrong color oil. I cant trust them again.

I see similar shady reviews posted in the last four months that match my experience at Iowa City Tuffy’s. That’s not a coincidence. Their money making attempts are predatory and ridiculous!! I went in this last weekend, as a new customer for a scheduled oil change, and walked out -> to never, never go back again. They had my Suv on the rack at Noon and I was told it would be about an hour. At 1pm, service tech said here is a list of recommended repairs, over $1,000 for a low mileage SUV, and they hadn’t started the oil change. I should have had my vehicle taken down from the hoist and walked out at that minute! But, I had been up early, tired, and just said no, oil change only and I let myself get talked into a double priced air filter. Total $99 for the basic oil change with the $25 air filter. Any of the local dealerships provide the same service, except more honest, at 1/2 the price. Now that’s saying how much Tuffy’s is willing to hose their customers to make a buck

Horrible tried to get me to fix unnecessary stuff such as my CV Axel witch had nothing wrong with it and they tried to charge ridiculous prices for parts. They wanted 70 dollars for 5 new lug nuts! They are terrible they wanted about 1000 dollars for all the repairs so I took it out of the shop and got it done for 200 bucks. They dont know what they are doing and they have terrible service!

I went to Tuffy for Oil change on Highlander around winter 2014. What should have taken 30$ ran into 1100$. One of the main problems was a leak from front differential which costed 500$ to repair (they put new gasket, labor, etc.) or so I was told. Same problem reappeared after 8 months and this time I took the car to dealer. This time they really changed the gasket and it took only 35 bucks. I have all the receipts to prove my statements. Stay away from Tuffy !!

I needed brakes, cv boot and wheel alignment. The estimate provided by Lexus dealership during a safety recall was $550. I decide to bring it to Iowa City where I live. Tuffy shop mgr says it drives great and no need for an alignment. I pick it up and they have done an alignment along with replacing a complete cv joint rather than just the boot. The cv joint was an additional $500 with no call to inform me before doing that service. Extremely disappointed in the up sales without informing me.Follow up: The manager reached out to me immediately and made it right. He fought for my business. I would rate this experience 4 star as problems do occur; however, the manager did work hard to correct it.

Significantly over priced, try to up sell you many in needed things.A 2nd option is an absolute necessity.

Had trouble identifying the issue with my A/C. I went to carousel Nissan and they could not identify my issue, wanted me to pay ~$1,400 for possible repairs, and wouldnt properly explain to me what was going on. After seeing a free A/C check at Tuffys, a second opinion is exactly what I was looking for. I talked to Ernie, the manager, and he was able to tell me exactly what was wrong with my car, gave me fair estimates for parts and labor, and even worked with my college student budget. Everyone there was extremely helpful, took time to explain things, and worked with my budget. As a plus, they even fixed a malfunctioning tire pressure display without me having to tell them about it. For those who dont know much about cars and parts, these guys are good people to trust. Keep up the good work Tuffys employees.

In from Tennessee and I needed to have the oil changed they got me in fast service was incredible! Would highly recommend tuffys to anyone needing anything done to their vehicle!

Friendly staff and went out of their way to help me with my car! Took my car to other shops and Tuffys is the first one to find out what was wrong with it. Will definitely be back!
