Beautiful vegetarian platter and the waiter was very nice. I would recommend this place for dinner instead of lunch. They dont have a lunch menu and food doesnt come out super quickly. If you have time for a leisurely lunch its nice because its not crowded, but definitely dont come here if youre in a hurry.
The food is always excellent! Sometimes excellence takes time but well worth the wait!
Growing up in N.W. DC I was privileged to be exposed to an array of different cultures. Being raised in that kind of enlightenment equates to access to a smorgasbord of worldwide FOOD!! On this day I chose to go to @shaggarestaurant for some delicious Ethiopian cuisine. Located on 6040 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville M.D. this spot gives you a true taste of Ethiopia 🇪🇹 with its traditional ingredients. Menu items include salads, chicken entrees like Doro Alicha (tender chicken simmered in onion, garlic, ginger and herb butter served with a boiled egg placed on Injera bread $15), Yesiga Tibbs (Beef cubes sautéed in onions, green peppers and herbs $15), as well as fish, lamb and vegetarian options. For a quick lunch we chose an order of lentil Sambusas (pictured-pastry shells filled with your choice of chicken, beef, or lentils $5 for three), and their Doro Wot ( pictured-tender chicken simmered in spicy red pepper sauce called Berbere, garlic, onions, and herbed butter sauce $16-instead of a boiled egg we got potatoes). You can eat the entrees and/or sides with a fork but...I recommend that you lay your fork down and eat this meal with the Injera (a slightly sour, fermented flatbread with a spongy texture traditionally made out of teff flour). Eating this food by tearing off a piece of Injera and scooping up your meal just feels right, as the textures and flavors blend together perfectly!! I highly recommend @shaggarestaurant via quality food, grand customer service, and a calming environment...especially if you’re trying Ethiopian food for the first time. Again, the customer service was grand, they exuded patience, we were treated warmly, and there are just straight up kind people in this establishment. Parking? There was plenty of parking, so no worries about that at all. Y’all, I took some quick snapshots of the artwork on the walls...simply beautiful!! You can get your food to go, delivered via third party or eat inside the restaurant. Look I know you’ve had Ethiopian food before, GO THERE and have theirs!! If you haven’t had Ethiopian food before, GO THERE and have theirs!! Trust me!! That’s it. **This establishment is Covid compliant**
This place was a nice experience. When we arrived it was empty, but you can dine in - seating is limited (due to pandemic). We ordered the veggie combination (I got to choose four different veggies options) and the chicken and beef meat combination with two veggie add-ons. The flavoring of the food was authentic to someone with a novice palate like myself... In other words, the flavors were great! Our waiter was very soft spoken but nice and got us what we needed. I would come back again
This place is good!!! I never saw myself eating this style of food before I was brought out here. Happy to say I will be back in the future
I actually enjoy the dishes and service, excellent area very close to where I live. The employees are always helpful. Will visit here again.
Everything was delicious and promptly served. I was able to request my preferences even though what I wanted was not exactly as seen on the menu.
One of my favorite places to eat in the local area! I really enjoy meals designed to shared with friends which the menu really caters to.
Just moved to the area and heard great things about this place—and it was even better than I imagined. Delicious food, friendly staff, and a great place to bring a friend or your family! Highly recommend.
The food is very good they have very good manners and I love to visit them
We like a lot going out. Yesterday we went to this magnificent restaurant which friends recommended to us. We passed a beautiful experience there with delicious food and an efficient crew and an impressive cook. We added this place in our list and we will certainly come back very soon. Highly recommended.
Delicious vegetarian take-out. Always quick and easy to place an order for pick up.
Good food, hospitable service. Looking for a good Ethiopian meal, try them. You will not be displeased.
Great artwork. Friendly staff. And most importantly the food is delicious, filling, and gluten free options are available. Great portions and options to share. Cant wait to come back!
Deliciously Ethiopian food. This was my first time eating Ethiopian food and I would definitely recommend it.
I hate to be the burden of bad news, but this is not authentic Ethiopian food. Not even close. I promise, they are not using ANY authentic Ethiopian spices, at all. Even the quality of the meat, not my cup of tea and I wont be returning.
Very delicious and beautiful food. This is a very affordable place to eat, especially for vegans. As a vegan college student, I love that I can grab a beautiful and tasty platter of delicious Ethiopian stews for only 10 bucks. The food is very large portions for low prices and they have excellent vegan options. The food was fresh and filled with flavor, I will definitely be returning for lunch here between classes.
The best sambusa Ive ever had!!! Everything was served with quality and the taste was amazing. Delicious food, reasonably priced and a nice clean, family atmosphere. Give them a try!
The best Ethiopian food Ive had in a long time!
Their food is better than many DIY Ethiopian restaurants in DMV but the old lady has attitude which made me give her three stars.
Ingera and veggie platter both very vood
Great food and service. The vegan platter for two is cheaper than at most other Ethiopian restaurants in the area, but just as delicious!
Food not authentically prepared. They used canned green beans for the fasolia, which also didnt come with carrot in it, frozen collards greens for the gomen, and cubed chicken for the Doro wot. All of this tasted like trash, and youre supposed to cook the whole pieces of chicken with the bone in because that flavors the sauce(wot) as well. Even the sauce didnt have enough berbere...Im never going there, Ill just make it myself at home or continue to go to Langano in Silver Spring, if they didnt also bastardize Ethiopian cuisine by now...I couldnt eat it.
This restaurant is just okay. For the prices, portions are not very sizable, and taste seems watered down - at least compared to other Ethiopian restaurants. Server was pleasant. Ambiance is decent. Nice sized room but many chairs and tables make for a tight fit to navigate other patrons. I imagine this is a nice spot for social events. Parking - though free - is not the best.
This was my first restaurant in Maryland. Also my first time experiencing Ethiopian food. I’ve nothing else to compare this to since it’s my first time, but it definitely sets the bar high for other Ethiopian restaurants. Didn’t try any coffees, but the food and service here is great! Made sure to stop in a couple times a week when I was living down the block for a brief period of time.
This is one of the best Ethiopian restaurants you can go to extremely authentic
Best bread. Fresh food. Loved the experience.
Great food. Very tranquil atmosphere.
Such a delicious place to get a meal from - - their combos and 2 person platters are perfect for family meals. Highly recommend getting Sambusas as aps, and getting a few more than you think you’ll need because they are really, really delicious.
Always great food, service, and atmosphere.
Consistently great flavors. Outstanding staff. 100% tef injera available on request.
Absolutely love Shagga! The owner and her staff are wonderful and the food is delicious. Highly recommended.
Great service, long wait time.
Absolutely the BEST Ethiopian food in MARYLAND.... Simply delicious!!!!!
Food is always perfect and the staff is nice.
One of the best plates of food I ever had in my life! This restaurant is amazing!
Excellent Ethiopian food. The Doro wat had a nice kick to it. I ordered a medium well done kitfo and it was divine! Just the perfect blend of spices. I asked for some mitmita on the side. Thats the spice that flavors the Kitfo. My wife is vegetarian and she had a vegetarian platter that was full of a variety of vegetarian dishes in small quantities over the usual Injira. She loved it all.If I had to point to anything that was missing, it was that they were out of the Tej, their honey wine.
Great food an big portions...friendly staffNasty salad, You shouldnt give salad if is not going to be FRESH! salty fries!A different tasty flavor of meats
If you like Ethiopian dishes then Shagga is the place for you even during the new COVID regulations. The menu serves all people needs that has a superb taste that you will remember and continue to come back to Shagga.
My first time at this restaurant, totally enjoyed the food.
Great food, beautiful decor, and lovely staff. Looking forward to coming again!
The combination for 2 takeout was delicious. Generous portions, a great mix of sides and mains, and great customer service!
Amazing service and delicious food!!!
A good, solid, and convenient spot for Ethiopian food. Ive enjoyed the doro wot and the yebeg alicha from here. They give a bit more injera than other places in the area, which I appreciate.
This is my favorite Ethiopian restaurant. I used to go all the way to DC but now I can just go to Shagga. I love the Kitfo (lean beef) and the vegetarian combo. You can order “pure” injera from Ethiopia as well.
The food was fabulous and tasted even better the next day! We tried the beef and fish tibbs and lamb alicia. I really liked how they boxed the food for two to-go, they gave my fiancé and I equal portions instead of throwing it in containers.
Absolutely love this place! Their food is consistently a 11 out of 10. :D
Amazing food!!! My family and I have been coming to Shagga for years and they always serve outstanding food! If youve never tried Ethiopian before, come to Shagga (2x...it usually takes a second visit to get used to the injera) love this place and the people!!
Not too many Ethiopian restaurants in the area that I am aware of. This is my favorite. Good fresh food and friendly staff.
I am a big fan of Ethiopian food. The sambusas are great and come in 3 different versions. I had their vegetable platter for one and it was more like for 2. The doro wat I got for a friend was also
Back again and love the vegetarian dish. Great for vegans!!!
I was so thrilled when I got an Ethiopian restaurant in my neighborhood a few years ago. I find I enjoy it more with every visit. Delicious food, sweet ambiance.
Absolutely delicious and friendly staff!
If you havent been here in a while try it again the food is really good
What a treat the food is absolutely divine. Presented beautifully and the flavours complemented each other.
They were very generous with the portions and the food was tasty
I celebrated my PhD last night in this fine place. happy to tell that we had a fine evening and the venue was indeed the reason for the successful meeting. The waiters collaborated in a very nice way, the cooking was extremely good and my friends were extremely pleased. We shall no dout visit again for more events. thanks very much.
3.5 rating! Tasty dishes. Good social distancing.
The food is excellent price is manageable.
I chose pickup. The food was ready shortly after I arrived and was delicious, as usual.
Was a regular customer before moving. Delicious and ALWAYS FRESH right out of the kitchen. Make sure to get the staple meat, Beef Tibbs!
This has become one of our go-to for takeout nights. The food is great and the employees are always really friendly. I am obsessed with their chickpea salad and my wife loves the Doro Tibs.
Love the vegetarian combination!
Food was ok. The guy who waited on us kept forgetting what we asked for. It was better the last visir.
Amazing food, me and my husband have tried different Ethiopian restaurants and Shagga is by far the best one. The food is delicious!!!During the weekend it might get busy and the wait can be quite long but I assure you is worth the wait.
Phenomenal food. Friendly staff. My new favorite place. Beats going to DC.
Very neat and welcoming place. They offer generous portions and for fair rates. We liked the food very much and the staff were very amiable and chatty. Will definitely recommend this restaurant.
Amazing food 😍
Good food, portions where a bit small but Ill take quality over quantity every time.
We held a business meeting here and staff was very accomodating. We were able to bring in a couple easles and make a brief presentation without a lot of hassle. Thank you.
I love this place. My favorite Ethiopian food in town. Service is great, they accommodate the spice level to your liking and tolerance level, since I dont do hot. I just tell them, no pepper, no jalapeno. It is perfect, with 2 items 2 people can eat plentiful. Highly recommend it. Dont go too hungry because the is a little of a wait if it is full. Remember, this is not fast food. Hope you enjoy it!
I get to eat here a lot since I work close by. I have to say their service is always great and they keep the place well kept consistently. Prices are reasonable and they serve large portions.
Great food and customer service!
This has become one of our go-tos for takeout nights. The food is great and the employees are always really friendly. I am obsessed with their chickpea salad and my husband loves the Doro Tibs.
Ive come here a few time and would give every time the same 5 star rating. The waitress here is always the same and just super friendly. She treats everyone like family. The food takes a while to prepare but that is because it is GOOD. Everything is so flavorful. Their meat is juicy and well seasoned, and their vegetables are amazing. Tomato salad (diced tomatoes and minced jalapenos and onions) have an amazing vinaigrette sauce on them as does their salad. I love this place for a meal by myself or with family, and I introduce everyone I love to this place.
Upon entering this restaurant, there is a peace and pleasantness that prevails. The multicultural experience and love that permeates is an endearing factor of me and my husband as return customers. It is refreshing to see a business of color thrive in this manner. Please support this business!!! Blessings!!
Delicious 😋
Delicious and authentic food! Sweet and attentive wait staff. Cant wait to visit again!
Fantastic food! fantastic service! This was a real experience. First time having Ethiopian food and loved it. The restaurant is well decorated. Loved some of the art on the walls
Very good food. Service is nice. Relaxed environment, Yet warm and friendly. My wife and I really enjoy having this option for Dinner. The coffee is authentic.
I had lunch there today and the food made me sick. I was reading my new book I didn’t even notice myself finishing the dish. But am sick someone should look in to this
Second time there. Excellent food, my preferred Ethiopian place. Honey wine was good too.
Great variety of Ethiopian dishes. Lunch menu prices are best. Injera is fresh and wots (stews) are tasty and just the right amount of oil. Good place to meet a friend for a meal. Dont go when time is limited.
For Americans, good ethiopian food from the culture.
Service is great but food isnt much. Needs improvement.
