Our experience was painful. I admit I was guilty of not doing enough homework. For a few years my grade school son wanted to invest his savings. He was fascinated with collecting coins, so 2 or 3 times a year we took his savings to Southern Star. The old man in the shop put on an impressive act of wanted to help a young boy’s hobby and feed his interest. We were never buying very expensive coins (between $50 and $175), so I didn’t do a lot of research. As time went by we started shopping at another coin shop too. After six years we had over twenty coins about half and half from the two stores. My son decided to have his coins evaluated. As it turned out ALL the coins from Southern star had “dropped in value” more than 75%. The “kind old man” in the shop wouldn’t buy any of them back at any price. My son had spent almost $1,000 of his savings on essentially worthless coins. At the same time every coin bought from the other shop had either held its value or slightly increased. The second coin shop offered to buy back every coin they had sold him. Most for an increase but the worst case was an offer to buy the coin back for what he had paid. It was a hard life lesson for a young boy. Unethical business people can be found anywhere. No matter how kind they seem, some people just cheat for a living and sleep well at night. I should have been more diligent in protecting my son’s interests. The silver lining to the story is that he also bought an ounce of gold and one share of Google during the same time. His investing still turned a small profit even though Southern Star scammed him many times. My son came away very disappointed but a little wiser. What was more sad was looking the pathetic little man behind the counter at Souther Star willing to take money from children to make a few dollars.
Tracy and Cheryl were very honest. Price better than 90% than competitors. Very much appreciate their candor and knowledge in the industry as well just sharing it with us. I would highly recommend this as your coin and collectibles
LOVE THIS LITTLE HIDEAWAY SHOP. Hidden gem. GREAT, informative, shopkeeper (Mr. Witt), greets u with a friendly smile. Very fair prices, I have never felt I overpaid, as with others
I love Southern Star Coins. Vising their store is exciting and you get to learn a lot about coins, especially the history. Its great way to start a coin collection.
This is a great coin shop in Houston Texas. Many coin shops in Houston are nice, but I think this is more appeal for customers or better customer service experience. Tracy has been in this business for a long time and I highly recommend. If you want to start a coin collection or looking for particular coins. Stop by at Soutern Star coins.
Friendly and knowledgable proprietors. Willing to help out new collectors. Always has a selection of album coins to choose from, and has a selection of more valuable coins. Also sells collectible comics, cards, etc.
For better service, go elsewhere --- U.S. Coins and Jewelry is 5 miles away and pays within 1% of spot price.Phone call to store resulted in a completely useless conversation with someone claiming to be the wife of worker/owner that only answers questions in store. In store, I was quoted 98% of spot price instead of the industry typical 100%.
Wish the hours were more accommodating in the evening, but great coins.
They have amazing coins and are very knowledgeable and helpful.
I started going there about 7 years ago it was a great place to learn about coin, as I grew older i soon realized that almost everything there is over priced. I truly recommend this place for starters as you will learn much about the hobby.
Great place to talk about coins and collectibles, knowledgeable.
Harry was very patient with me when I brought in a bunch of coins in bags. Some were sorted and some were not, but he spent the time going through everything with me, explaining to me what I had and how much it was worth.
Closed except for Friday Saturday and Sunday. Update your hours so people dont drive an hour just to find out youre closed.Edit: Went back on a Friday just to be told the coin guy doesnt show up until about 11:30. The hours listed for Friday are 10-6. Also once I waited around for him to decide to open I found very little selection. Two small displays taking up less than half of the store. The remaining inventory was toys and comic books. Not worth it.
Only open Fri sat sun. Drove all the way over and they were closed.
Great place and people
It was good
