After a few visits, this has become my go-to spot for bike repairs. They’ve been able to fix it on the spot and answer all my questions as they work.Super cool vibes overall with music playing and everyone cracking jokes.Today I didn’t have all the money I needed to get my bike road ready and they let me pay what I can and come back later. All three people I’ve worked with have been awesome, my bike feels great, and they always get me taken care of.I’ll be back. Can’t recommend enough.
Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. I brought my bike there to have a kick stand, water bottle holder and rear rack installed. Very happy with the service. I have also had to have a new tube for my tire. Dry fast and good work.
Went in hoping to support a LBS but, as other have said, the owner is aggressive and rude. I asked for a tube with a 60mm stem- he had none in stock- and his response was that my wheels were either too cheap or too expensive. Anyway, Urban Bike Gallery had lots in stock.
Excellent service! He repaired my flat and tuned my shocks.
Online hours says the shop is open (on Mondays at 10am) so I drove across town with my bikes to have them work on. As I approached the door the person inside decides to walk to the back (as if he didn’t see me). Now there was a sign on the door that said closed on Monday, but how was I suppose to know that. BikeBarn is right around the corner but I was trying to support small local business. In the future ensure your hours are correct online and take that extra min to engage a potential customer, even if you are closed.
I feel confident that my bike is in good hands, reasonable prices.
Small shop with owner the only employee. Competent repair service with quick turnaround. Also carries a selection of new and used bicycles.
Always a pleasure very personal and helpful when out of his way to help Ill never go to another bike stop
Very happy. Jeff and Micah are personable. Expect them to work on island time and you will not be disappointed. SHOP LOCAL!
Owner/operator of the shop is super friendly and helpful.
Support your local bike shops! Owner is great, helps with my repairs and upgrades, always has some kind of stock.
Pretty good bike knowledge but the big man seems agitated most of the time.
The owner was very helpful and generous with his knowledge and assistance. Ill be stopping in again should I pass through!
These guys are the best. Personable, friendly and professional. They will get it done.
This is an A+ bike shop with a great owner. Had my chain replaced at Fletcher down the road and my gearing wasn’t working properly (and they were unwilling to be helpful). HBC took a look for no charge and gave me a few tips to get me back on the road.Earned a customer for life.
Ill just second what the rest of the world is saying here: the owner is inexplicably rude to his customers. Were trying to give you money, man. No need to berate us. I like supporting local bike shops, but theres no reason to support this one. This place is a disorganized sty with low quality merchandise.
Really generous staff who enjoy what they do. Good vibes, laughs and conversations to be had when he is working on your bike.. no appointment necessary!
Best bike shop in Houston. Customer focused and they take care of small jobs for free or very little cost. Ill be buying my next bike here!
Extremely rude. I had to greet the employees myself, to which I received no response. Walked into the store and asked a question, to which they responded, “we’re not open”. So why let me walk right in? To which I asked, “when are you open?” And they said “never”. Just say you don’t like Mexicans and go. Go to Eado Bike Co instead.
Did a fix in 15 minutes that one of the other bike shops in the area took three weeks to do.... and did it better and cheaper. This is my bike shop of choice from now on.
Picked up a new cassette for my road bike there, and the owner was friendly, so I took my mountain bike in for some repairs and told he would call me in a week and half when it was ready. I called him after 4 weeks and he said he didnt want to work on it and I should pick it up. When I picked it up it was missing parts and was extremely rude about it and offered me only a terrible pair of grips as compensation.
Great service! He made sure my bike was ready to hit the road. Other businesses have taken my money and half way serviced my bike. This is the first time I have felt confident about the service I received. I encourage you to drop in the next time you need service for your bike.
Friendly and fast service. Thank you Micah for the good advice on switching gears.
Been coming here for years. If you want it done right, this is where to bring your bikes. I dont take mine anywhere else, and neither should you.
Great old school bike shop. Jeff will keep your bike tuned up better than new.
Rude and cranky owner. Very unprofessional and unhelpful. Never going back again. I should have rrad all the 1 star reviews.Go to fletcher bike instead. Cheaper and faster
Incredibly knowledgeable & always happy to impart insight to whatever bike related issue you could ever have! The owner is a bike prof badass & all around cool (and funny) guy. He loves what he does & it shows! The guy literally whistles while he works!:D Whether to take a quick peek at a squeaky tire, or for a full bike build, this shop has been my ALL TIME go-to! My family & I have been coming to Houston Bicycle Co for over 15 years and they’ve remained consistently reasonably priced for goods and services! Love Love LOVE HBC!!
Dropped my bike twice from the hanger when the rear wheel was detached and damaged the back derailleur and fork. Did it right in front of me and didnt apologize. Also gave me attitude about having bought my bike at Bike Barn. Dont waste your time or money.
Professional, knowledgeable, courteous & always available to communicate with the customer about ANYTHING bikes. I wouldnt go anywhere else.
When I went to this bicycle company to repair my bike to get my tires fixed the owner of this bicycle repair shop was very kind he told me good stores while he was repairing the bicycle that I had that had both cars that. And I really had a steak for a because he works Peyton me and he really understand my situation. He said that you would maintain my bike and help me to maintain it to any gave me could have ice and I really appreciate his business he really had a fair price. The prices rarely really affordable and I really like that thang you Houston bicycle company.
The food is awesome. Its was worth the price and drive .
Friendly service from Jeff who rides A LOT in this dangerous city of Houston. Great advice for free as well. Dont know about prices as I havent been to many other bike shops recently to remember.
Great place with a great staff. Super knowledgeable and well stoked. Getting tire trued at a great price and even got a cap!
Fair prices, great knowledge, fast service. A must stop if you are in need of repair or parts.
Overpriced merchandise and the owner is very nasty and gets defensive when you ask the prices of merchandise not marked. Also, took my bike there for a minor repair and the older man didnt fix right. Had to come back and the younger guy fixed right. . i will never go back and now use the other bike shop in the area.If u want bad customer service and shoddy work on your bike thaen this is yoir place!
Awesome as usual! Thanks man!
The owner is very knowledgeable about bicycles. He have great stories as well.
Great experience! Really helpful and spent time on a fairly small thing but saw it through and really appreciated the help. Plus, he didnt charge me for the work! Very friendly, helpful, local bike shop.
Best little bike shop in Montrose. Fair prices so no complaints here.
This place is excellent. Bough my bike there, and went back a couple years later to buy my girlfriends bike. The owner is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and goes out of his way to make sure youve got everything you need.Highly recommended.
Jeff is the best. I purchased a trailer for my kids and he set it up for me while we waited. Highly recommend this friendly place.
Jeff the owner is just extremely awesome and he really knows all about bikes!
I purchased my first real bike from here and I couldnt be happier. Super friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff. I recommend this place to everyone.
HBC has been maintenancing my bike for 2 years and it rides like a champ every time I leave. I ride everywhere and keep a schedule with Jeff as recommended. I moved away from the area but ride 35+minutes just for his service., and itll stay that way!
A really outstanding bicycle shop in Montrose. The owner is nice and prices are definitely reasonable. Put 10 hard years on my Urban Express and still going strong, only brought in once to repair the front fork.
I had a good first time experience! The owner said he was bike crazy. He seemed very knowledgeable and reliable
The guys are reasonable and cut prices, when they can. In general the shop is very competent, its just the fact that they are not very nice guys. They will definitely let you know if they dont like your gear and how crappy it is from the get go. At least that was my personal experience. I understand its their job to sell me better stuff but when youre dropping my bike from the holder to prove to me how crappy it is, theres a lack of professionalism. Still an O-K bike shop for emergencies but there are better places nearby.
Nice shop. Good prices and work.Be patient here, its worth it.
The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful. Jeff replaced a tube and tire while I waited and gave me some helpful information on riding around the city. I look forward to returning!
This is a great place, one of the only ones that I have been in where they arent rude to customers. So many shops act like they are doing customers a huge favor to even talk to them.Friendly and knowledgable and no pressure.
Jeff you saved my bike! Wanna talk about a group of guys that know what the hell theyre doing, I rolled in here with a problem that had evaded 2 other bike shops and I was about to give up hope. Not only did Jeff sideline his other projects to diagnose my problem but he then proceeded to fix it ON THE SPOT! I was very impressed with the casual speed at which he accomplished the repair and had a great time chatting with him until it was finished, even learning a few things along the way. Ive been to a couple bike shops in midtown, but as far as service and capability are concerned this has been my best experience so far. Thanks again guys.
Thank you so much for saving my baby, Zebra Bike, when we couldn’t get her tire back on due to my art mods. When that tire went out I was worried she wouldn’t be able to make Pride parade. She’s better than ever now!
Great place to buy a new bike or get any repairs done to your bike. Reasonable prices and the owner Jeff provides awesome customer service.
I go to a bike shop for competent mechanical work which I am short on time to do myself. My bikes are not fancy but they are very good and I take care of them. This shop does good work for a fair price... all I ask. I have brought my bikes elsewhere and found after a few minutes of speaking to them that I knew more than they did... not so here. They do have a lot of customers like me which is one reason that it may take them some time to get to your stuff. This has been my only complaint.
Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Way overpriced $50 for a set of cables I could easily get from Walmart for $8 if they ever kept them in stock. $35 for a 24 front rim. He told me that I would never be able to put as shifters on my bike without having brakes. Not too bright these guys.
The owner was very nasty when i was asking about pricing to buy a bike so i walked out and bought a new bike elsewhere. Will never go back there again. Very overpriced and low quality merch.
Houston bike shop, The owner is a good guy .and will work with you if nesasary.
Small family owned. Straight shooters. Recommended highly
Response to Rachel Die on file w BBBIn response to Better Business Bureau case number 12704489We feel we did everything possible to accommodate the customer’s wishes. We too are disappointed that we could not satisfy her. In December 2017 the customer purchased a $125 gift certificate for a friend. In February she returned with her friend and the bicycle, seeking service. It was at this time we recognized her friend as a regular visitor to our store. Previously her friend had been made well aware of the compromised condition of the bicycle’s bent front fork. They were very hopeful that we could manage to get the bike rolling again. For a drivetrain and cables we felt it would exceed the $125 of the gift certificate and would still need a front fork replacement. Our understanding was if we could not complete the drivetrain and brakes for $125 please call first. For that particular service it is typical to remove and discard worn parts. After removing the chain it was discovered the derailleur hanger was stripped. In recalculating the repairs it would reach close to $160 IF the part could be replaced. We notified the customer we would not be able to complete the repair because the bike frame did not allow for this part to be replaced, the bike was not repairable and we would refunded all her money. Naturally disappointed she came for the bike and was very upset that the bicycle could no longer be operated without the chain and that the cables were gone. We probably said that it did not matter as the bike was not repairable because of the fork and derailleur hanger anyway. That certainly did not satisfy her and she expressed angrily her intention to report us to the Better Business Bureau. She has also taken to Internet forums to discredit our company. As stated previously, we are also disappointed but feel we acted in the best interest of the customer.
Great mom and pop bike store.
They have some supplies I really like and service has been really good
Every time I go here the owner doesnt want to do anything but complain about his personal problems and blame whoever is in there. I first thought he just had a few bad days, then I realized that its just him. Then his prices started to get inconsistent and he said I should buy a better bike, from him. Even though his OWN staff pointed out there is nothing wrong with mine. He also keeps going on some stupid rant about consumers not giving him enough money. Such a baby. The owner is literally killing his own business. Its not the consumers fault, its him. There are better bike shops in the area, I will only come here as a last, and by last I mean apocalyptic nuclear emergency, last resort.
Ive read all the reviews and I have to agree.... the owner/operator of Houston Bicycle Co. is a rude jerk. I wont be going back there ever again ....unless every other bike store on earth goes out of business.I went there on a Sunday to get some small items that I knew they would have. I arrived there right after they had opened for the day. Even though I was the only patron in the very small bike store at the time, I was completely ignored for several minutes by the two employees who were working. The older guy there was just thumbing through a magazine and the younger guy there was moving bikes to the front of the store. They were just BSing as I stood there waiting to be acknowledged. When I was finally acknowledged, it was kind of like.... what do you want? WOW!! REALLY!! Then, after I had paid for my items, I said thanks a lot to the guy waiting on me. The guy replied back to me .... sure. If the owner operator is reading this review.... please learn to say... Hi.... what can we help you with today? And.... Thanks for your business.... please come back to see us. If you said those two things.... I bet your store would be more successful. DUH!!
Jeff may not be the costumer service rep. you find at other places. But he is very knowledgeable about bikes! And cuts price where wherever he can!
Walked in and waited 15 min while he was with another customer and they failed to even acknowledge me or say hello. This is the second time I have been here the first time the sign said open and I rang the bell and no answer.
Called on the phone and they didnt have what I was looking for and they referred me to two other bike shops that probably would. Nice customer service.
Buy cheap products from them that you can go to Bayou City Cycles and buy better products at cheaper prices!!!!!!! Or go to Ham Cycles.....
First off Id like to say I would rate this place zero stars, if I could. Horrible customer service! My boyfriend has spent so much money here only to be ripped off. Owner is a complete a-hole. Please do not waste your time or money! All they want to do it overcharge you for poor work. They charge thirty dollars for a clip on light... Youre better off going to Ham.
Helpful & sweet! I really appreciated them. I wouldnt go anywhere else.
The owner, Jeff aired up my tires, and replaced a rear cable, while I waited! Great service!
What a great bike shop experience! My new Craigslist Trek 7500 needed (I thought) two shifter cables so I called Jeff and he said $35. What? I was pumped because I had already called a nearby shop and got the ole Hmm,, we need to look at it, etc. So for $35, of course I brought it in to Houston Bicycle.Jeff is such a nice guy. Plus at 3 Pm Friday I was his only customer. He replaced one shifter cable and a brake cable. He tightened the other shifter, the handlebars, the pedals, put air in the tires, worked through all the gears, told me the chain and rear tire would be needing replacement next and put on a kickstand for $10. He showed me how to adjust the seat and then for gratis gave me a metric hex wrench to do it at home. I was out of there in an hour. Another customer came in to the shop while I was there and asked about a wheel replacement and Jeff said $100. It is so great to be told a price. Shows a lot of integrity, IMO.December is a slow season, maybe this job would cost $100 in April, IDK, but it was the best $45 I ever spent except that one time in Tijuana. My recommendation: if you need some work done on an old bike or want to buy a new bike do it here and do it asap. At these margins I dont know how long this place will last!
There is one guy working there who is unbelievable openly hateful and hostile (short blonde haired guy). The tall dark haired guy (Harry) is nice but you dont know who is going to be there when you walk in.I will never go back to this shop.
Please dont take your bikes to Houston Bicycle Company on Westheimer and Taft! They are horrible. We brought in an old bike and didnt have a ton of money to spend to make it right. I bought a CHRISTMAS present that was a gift certificate to get some repairs done. They accepted the bike and then told us they refused to work on it because it wasnt safe. They returned the bike to me not ridable and said they threw away parts that werent safe. I repeatedly asked for the parts back to make the bike at least ridable. Nope. So if you dont have hundreds of dollars to spend on boughie bikes they wont help you replace your brakes or chain. They got loud with me when I went in there and tried to say I wasnt happy. WORST BIKE SHOP EVER. I already reported to the BBB just wanted to let yall know.
Prices are much too high and the owner was rude. There’s no purpose in paying higher prices at a smaller shop if the customer service is terrible.
I like the assistance that you guys provide to your customers. I really had a wonderful experience with your services, amazing staff and various items!
I had a great experience here the other day. I brought in my old commuter bike with obvious drivetrain issues. I knew I had to replace some parts, but wanted to keep costs down as much as I could since Im finishing up school and just want to keep my bike going for a few more months. The guys told me I could just get away with replacing the chain and cassette for now. I had brought the bike over to Fletcher earlier, and they insisted that I replace the front crank, bottom bracket and front derailleur too, which would end up costing more than I paid for the bike to begin with! After my chain and cassette were installed (they did the repair right away as I waited), the guys suggested a place I could go (not their shop) to look for a used crank for cheap if I needed to replace it down the road, and avoid having to upgrade my bottom bracket and derailleur. They even found an old part in the back that they had lying around, but it didnt fit my bike. The guys at Houston Bike are really honest and down to earth, and will genuinely help you with your bike related problems. They may not go out of their way to be overly polite salesmen when they first greet you, but if you can get past that you will be rewarded with great service.
I brought the bike in for tire repair. They called me a day after it was supposed to be done and told me they found other problems and wanted to charge me treble. I declined. When I went back for my bike the tires were gone. They didnt have to repair it but they left it in WORSE shape then when I brought it in. Unacceptable and felt like a scam.
Purchased our new hybrids here, knowledgeable staff and very helpful.
Good service. Great price for repairs.
Bike got stolen from work so I called the Houston Bicycle Company to see what they had for somewhat inexpensive mountain bikes, around the $350-$500 range. I was told their least expensive is $500+ and that, This isnt Wal-mart. I explained that my bike had just gotten stolen and didnt appreciate the attitude I was getting from him just for asking questions about what they had. He then hung up the phone on me. I called back and asked for a manager and got the response, Im the only one here dude. If youve got a problem come down and talk to me about it. Then he hung up again. Needless to say, they didnt get my business for that bike or any future repairs or bikes I will be purchasing. Its a shame too since I have about 3-4 bikes I get serviced every few months. I went to Bike Barn by Rice University and got a brand new Trek for $400.
Will probably fix your bike, but if you go in there with a less than par bike, expect a snide and obnoxious comment from the owner. The prices are also high and inconsistent. Wont be going back.
Great service
Jeff is a piece of work. The other guys seem cool, reasonable enough.I dropped off two regularly ridden road bikes that I had stripped, cleaned, and lubed, just needed reassembly. Jeff told me hed get me an estimate on repair in a week or so. I wasnt in a big hurry, fine. I left my phone number, email address, and physical address (in the neighborhood).Couple weeks pass, no contact. I called the shop a couple times to no answer. Several more weeks pass. Eventually it slipped my mind, which is my fault. Finally after a couple of months of no contact I stop by the shop to check in on status. Jeff was out, but I was told hed call me. Next day I get a call from Jeff and he told me he had given away my bikes. We were both in the wrong for not communicating, but dude couldve at least given me a call or text or emailed me before taking action to give away my property. I mean, thats common sense, common courtesy. He said he called me once (Im skeptical; I make a living by answering my phone), but admits to not calling, texting or emailing before giving away my bikes.Homeboy seems like he has a chip on his shoulder for some reason, one of those world is against me kind of guys. I dont know how good he is at working on bikes (never got the chance) but the customer service straight up sucks a bag of di*ks. Now Im out maybe $400-$500 between the two.Too many other reputable, local shops in town (Blue Line, West End, Urban) to waste time with disgruntled jerks like Jeff.
I went to this place last weekend and it was an absolute joke...I was in the store 10mins looking at the small selections of bikes..the store was empty yet the man there didnt seem remotely interested in helping me. Maybe he thought all black people are broke...finally I just asked him if he could help me...showed me 1 bike 600.00 his so called best seller..it was a joke...I came in with 700 lookin for a good bike...i left and yesterday went to southwest bike shop on stella link and bisssonet...AWSOME BIKE SHOP....got great service and bought a great bike for 553.00 with some assessories added..young man was fantastic...im a united states AIRFORCE veteran and Im also black...and Im no where near broke or homeless..Houston Bike Co....doesnt look like much from the outside and even sorrier on the inside...if you are black avoid this dump......😕this place sucks..dont waste your time or money going hear..owner is a racist like donald trash...😠
Walked in 15 minutes after posted opening time though had to wait for the owner to unlock the door. There were no displays outside, as i have seen in the past and should have continued to another shop. i was then treated to a diatribe on how retail/service sector is dying, that maybe he would close and go to the beach rather then opening the following day because he was [sarcastically] . . . so busy. . . and how people like me are making it difficult for him because i have not bought a new bike in years. when i asked for a replacement brake cable, and made it two just so i would have a spare and to support local business, i was shocked at the $7 each price for something i guessed was worth $2 each, but was expecting up to $4 each to support local brick and mortar shops. but i was there, so did purchase, though when he offered if i needed help to let him know, at retail prices 100% too high, there is no way i will consider stepping inside Houston Bicycle again, for parts or service.I am sure that for a business to be around for 20+ years they must have happy and satisfied customers. maybe i caught him on a bad day, which could account for the diatribe, but i cant think of anything that can justify those prices.
Great service and good parts
Taft and Westheimer, new bikes at $800 and above. Good selection of helmets, locks, and clothing
It was great. Good service.
New to biking, visit HBC. Good at what they do,
Extremely helpful and friendly staff, efficient and quick as well
Great guys! Knowledgeable, laid back and honest!
Great experience great guys highly recommend will be returning
This place is a great neighborhood bike shop. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
The owner was very kind, helpful and knowledgeable.
Waited 50 minutes for no one to even show up when they were supposed to be open
The owner is NOT a very friendly guy.Glad I didnt spend much money there before I caught on.
Jeff was the greatest!
Went by this morning looking for a helmet for my nephew, the young man was very rude and annoyed by my business.
Rude employees and employer. They dont open on time and are way too high!!!
