Absolutely lovely, I went here to grab some lithography paper and was delighted to find someone that finally knew what lithography was and knew a lot about the paper itself. There were so many things jam packed into such a small location in a really nice and orderly way. They have everything you could possibly want or need and because they do sales so often youre probably going to get it cheaper than from Jerrys Artarama or anywhere else. I cant wait for a reason to come back and buy more art supplies. ❤
I have known the owners Vicki and Ben for decades, and as a painter I cannot think of anyone in Houston who knows more about art supplies than Vicki. They maintain a wonderful inventory of oil paints, acrylic paints, watercolors, drawing materials, papers, brushes, canvas, and more. They offer extensive discounts to students from the University of Houston, St Thomas, and the Glassell School at the Museum of Fine Arts. Far and away the best place to purchase art supplies in Houston.
Very knowledgeable and helpful. Lovely location and staff!
Recently went in and felt like I was being watched. I was asked if I needed help and responded that I just wanted to look around to see what they had, outside of maybe a sketch pad, I wasnt exactly sure what I was looking for in particular. The attendant let me know about the items on sale which was great. I proceeded to browse the store, actually looking for some sketch pads or something similar, but open to anything else I might find for a personal project. As I proceeded to browse, every time I looked over my shoulder, the attendant was standing there watching me. I thought it was strange, but at the same time, not really, considering all things. I proceeded to move toward the paints in the back and now she was at the table straightening up a few things. Well, by this time, I for sure knew what was happening and decided to exit the store and head to another art supply for what I needed.Needless to say, I will not be patronizing this business again and wont recommend it to anyone either. Its always interesting to me, when you find businesses that move into a majority minority (or what used to be majority) neighborhood and then act like youre surprised/afraid when we enter the store.Art Supply on Almeda....I need you to be do better! Im not sure if the lady was the owner or just a salesperson, but I recommend investing in some customer service and diversity training and most of all A HEART CHECK!
Wonderful store - large selection. The ladies are very nice and helpful!
Very helpful staff. Park in the back.
This store is so fresh and new. The building is beautiful, the landscaping is just as lovely. The owner was Art. She was a master of art and freely shared her knowledge with us.What a wonderful place and wonderful lady!
I always find what I need here and there is always someone happy to help me find the item/s.
It was terrific the workers were very nice kind and loving very much patient and the prices are very much great and I will be going back to the store
The owners love artists and have lived with artists during this multi-generational period of time. ...they are knowledgeable about everything the ins and outs of supplies
Large array of acrylic paints, they carry pretty much the whole golden range, student/pro grade canvases, brushes etc. Staff are extremely helpful and they had effective covid measures
Very friendly and helpful folks. Currently in a small “pop up” space adjacent to their future location. A solid selection of essential supplies for pencil, charcoal, pastel, acrylics, etc and they’ve much more in storage - if it’s not on display just ask. Reasonable prices, locally owned.
Knowledgeable staff, good prices.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡I love ❤ the staff here and the products sold here!!!!!!!!
Art Supply on Main...this is a great store, for me anyway. If your am Art student or an artist or just love to draw or anything artistic then this store is for you and you must come check it out. They have all kinds of pens calligraphy supplies wood supplies painting supplies stuff to organize your art supplies and so much more. The employees there love to help you look for what you want, and suggest things as well. Prices are right in line and have many on sale items. I highly recommend Art Supply on Main!
Excellent experience...supper nice and knowledgeable about the supplies I needed for my class. I will be back...and there discount was excellent too. Nice folks😊
For such a small space, an amazing range of fine art supplies. The friendly staff has all worked there a while and can answer your questions. Good discounts for students and artists. Update: the new location is great, ample parking, same good selection in a fresh, new space. Recommend this place.
This is a temporary place so its tight and small right now. The new location is coming soon. The staffs were friendly. If you need anything just ask them and they will gladly assist you in any way they can. There are more parking behind the store if the spots in front are full. It might be better to park in the back since it might be difficult to get out from the front parking lot during traffic time.
Love this store, the owner and staff are very friendly and know there business. Ive ordered several custom frames for stretching canvas and had a smooth experience. Vicki returned emails quickly and answered all my questions in a timely manner. Highly recommend this art store!
This place is the best in town. An actual fine art supply shop, not a corporate craft store. The staff is super helpful and friendly (even when I have a hundred questions). They always have the random supplies that I can’t find anywhere else. I came here looking for affordable acrylic paint (I use a lot for school) and they showed me a higher quality paint for a lower price compared to the stuff I normally use.
One of the best local art stores in Houston. The owners are fabulous and will talk to you literally all day long! They have a great selection of acrylic and oil paints, as thats why I was in there, the owners are also extremely knowledgeable about different medias. Im so glad I came across this gem!!
I have been going to Art Supply for about 30 years now and I will always go there for my artistic needs. I have personally gotten to know the owners, Ben and Vikki, and they are some of the most wonderful and knowledgeable people I think I have ever come across. The selection is great, the expertise is bountiful, and their framing services are exquisite. Knowing how much Ben and Vikki have done for the local community, I always feel great making a purchase with them.
I would give them no stars if I could. They are terrible business people. They are more concerned about theft than maintaining customers. Their paranoia is comes out in the form of harassment. I literally have a gift card that I won from my university but my experience was so poor that I have thrown it into the trash. I came in for a few sheets of poster board and they were trying to follow me around but there was too many people in the store so they asked for my backpack instead. How can I steal a poster board? Idiots.Although they are the closer store I would rather drive to Texas Art Supply. or wait for it through Amazon. I told everyone in my class and they wont be going. I will keep telling as many people as I can until they shut down. I hope they lose money.
Vicki and Ben Russell have been a mainstay in the Houston art scene for 50+ years. Art Supply has put on a swell Art Expo each year that allows us locals to visit with the reps from the top supply houses. If you need an item (and I have needed special watercolor stuff many times over the years), Vicki will find a way to get it.
The store is smaller than i thought but they do have a good variety of art supplies. The staff r so so nice and helpful. Prices are reasonable plus when i went, there is a good discount in printmaking papers and 25% purchasr over $60 for students. Highly recommend.
Great place to get all your art needs. They have great discounts, big variety and friendly, easy going staff. They offer abstract painting classes and even have custom framing in the store! Definitely your one stop for art.
I love coming here. Top quality supplies, they even carry some stuff you cant find at bigger supply stores. Love the staff, they always greet you with a great attitude. Theyre very knowledgeable people that are willing to help. The prices are great too! And if youre a student you get a discount on everything in the store! This has been my go to spot since college.
I love this place. Unlike a neighboring art supply store, the staff here is always really helpful and knowledgeable about materials. If youre taking a class, they give a 20% discount. If you bring a list of supplies, they will walk you through the store and help you pick your items. This is hands down the best art supply store in Houston.
This place is absolutely amazing. I went there to select some new markers and one of the owners was incredibly patient with me, showing me many different styles and allowing me to try several before making my selection. Definitely not my last visit, love this place.
I have my first interior design class this semester and needed supplies since Ive never taken any type of art class. I had checked the prices at Texas Art Supply online and went in person Art Supply first. The two women immediately asked if they could help. I explained that I was comparing prices and wasnt sure I would buy anything but that I would let them know if I needed help. I then set about with my phone and my list checking prices. They proceeded to follow me around. After about five minutes, one of the women said I should tell her what I was looking for and she could help me find it. I didnt need help as I was finding things fine on my own, which I told her, but she insisted on helping me. Everytime she pointed one out to me, I checked, the price, thanked her and walked away, but she would follow me and insist that I tell her what I was looking for. After the third time of that, I wasnt even halfway through my list, but I put my phone away and started to leave. The same worker asked if I was finished. I wasnt but told her that might be back after I check out Texas Art Supply in person. She tried to keep me in the store by explaining the 20% discount ended that day and used the register to figure out that Id pay $56 for a $75 purchase...a decent sales technique except that I was trying to leave and she was conveniently not mentioning that as a student, I can get the same discount any time. I left very irritated with being treated as a thief and almost outright lied to. I went to Texas Art Supply who also have a student discount, PLUS their prices are much cheaper, AND they have a much larger selection. Spent $280 there; would have been more at Art Supply on Main. They were more concerned with making following me around, to the point of almost forcing me to allow them to help just so they can keep an eye on me easier. I understand that small businesses are more likely to be shoplifted from but no one appreciates being treated like a criminal. We also dont appreciate when the sale associate doesnt listen to you. Between those factors and the lying by omission, I would not recommend. Im sure the associates are friendly when theyre not peeking around corners at you, staring suspiciously. Just leaves a bad taste. This is probably the reason that it was completely deserted.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff is all working artists. Generous student discount. Good selection.
This is a great art supply store. The employees and owner are so helpful and they have everything you need. Plus, the owner gave me some great art tips!
Very good selection of art supplies. Friendly service. Cozy. Offers art classes. Knowledgeable staff. Really good local mom and pop. Laid-back but focused on the customer.
Great looking new location!
This store is great for students due to the discounts offered and that is about it. Their supply quality is also why I gave them 3 stars. I would take another person that you feel safe with when you visit. It may be better for you to visit Texas Art supply if you are a professional or just want more guidance on art materials. Texas Art Supply employees are well trained and they value their customers. All of them. Not one issue in few years I’ve visited. At Art Supply, you are watched through the isles. They “guide” you to what they think is better even after you tell them what you came for. It is terrible. At this point, I would not say it is racially exclusive. I’ve watched one of them approaching another customer twice after she said she did not want help because she knew exactly what she was buying (she was a caucasian woman). I am disappointed that they have to repsond to customers so coldly. Maybe it is better that professional security is on staff. I would feel safer with them there.
This store really has a comprehensive inventory for all your art needs. I keep going back for more! The staff is also very knowledgeable and friendly.
Theyre a great art supply store catered for artists. If youre an art student this is the place to go 😊
Really chill place, studios on the second floor, and good variety of art materials. Good parking They need more spray can or aerosol paint varieties. Really good staff.
I had a great time, the staff are helpful and knowledgeable. I was buying supplies for my nieces birthday, she a budding artist. I wanted supplies for her comic book aspirations.
Great selection of supplies for arts and crafts as well as books and magazines. Good prices and friendly, very helpful staff.
Art Supply is a cool spot with good people. I stop here whenever Im starting on a project and they help me figure out the right materials. Check it out!
Always a fun experience here... the friendly staff makes me feel welcome every time and they always have answers to my amateur painting questions!
I didnt like how I had to leave my bag on the floor behind their cashier. I understand they might be doing it for safety because they are on Main St. of Houston, but girls if you have a Gucci bag dont take it in. Only if you dont mind leaving it on the floor
Good selection of just about everything you need to get for whatever project. Staff is very nice and helpful.
Great customer service and everyone is helpful. Maybe a little too helpful! When one lady wasnt helping me there was another one watching me like a hawk as I searched for various paints ect. I have great peripheral vision and every time the lady that was helping would leave, the other one would come to the same spot and watch me. I was very uncomfortable! I shouldnt feel uncomfortable when Im spending hundreds of dollars on painting supplies.
I am gonna shared my experience with this art supply store. I love everything they carry and like someone in another review said, they have things that arent easy to find in other art supply stores, but I feel like they just increase the prices a little. Also, I felt uncomfortable with the attention I was receiving from the employees, 3 different employees approached me to see if I needed help, which I didnt because I knew what I wanted to buy. Since, I only got one thing they didnt offer a student discount even though I had my school backpack with me...
Vikki and Ben and all of the Art Supply on Main Staff are so helpful. They will make sure you have everything you need and at a competitive price!
If you need advice and quality paints this is the place to go in town!
Great quality products but prices are a bit too high. My wife and I still shop here for our art work. Great student discount with student ID proof.
I have always had a great experience at this store.
If only I lived closer. The store as a great variety of art supplies.
Absolutely the best place to go for art supplies. Best supplies, best product knowledge and best customer service.
Excellent quality products & most knowledgeable staff make this the best art store in the region.
Very easy place to find; was greeted by a staff member as soon as I walked in. Although I came around 2pm, I think it was eerily deserted... I was also incredibly disappointed at the fact that most of the 7,500 sq ft of the store seems to be taken up by the framing department and that there was literally only one little pack of sculpting tools. However, I did find a few items and as I said before, the staff was friendly... albeit a little over attendant but as I mentioned before, the store was pretty empty.I went to Texas Art supply and was much happier with their selection! They really had it all! Encaustics, all manner of paints, papers, and a huge selection of tools in ceramics and sculptures and there too were pretty easy to find.
I’m so sad about the price there. They have some on sale items and student discount, but when I went to the other store, I realized that the discounted price is higher than other stores original prices. And I spent a lot money there. I feel cheated.
I visit this shop once a week: its family-owned and operated, and the folks there are just as friendly as can be... I highly recommend them!
Staff helpful, decent amount of varied inventory. Getting to the location and inside is a tiny bit confusing though.
The staff here is incredibly helpful and friendly. Much appreciated after having to deal with the staff at Texas Art Supply.
They have pretty much anything an artist might need but the prices are kinda high in my opinion. Students get a discount though so def check it out.
Way over priced supplies, ridiculous
Great store. Great service.
Best Art place in town!!
Small selection and expensive, even with the discounts. Theres way better art stores out there.Anecdotal: YEARS ago (Im sure the person involved doesnt even work there anymore, about 12 years ago, she mentioned she was an art student), before cell phones were common, my friend was checking the time on his cell while I was shopping, then he put the phone back into his pocket. He was accosted by an employee, who accused him of sneaking an item into his pants. After she demanded to see the item, he took it out. Lo and behold, it was a cell phone. She apologized and slunk away but the experience left a bitter taste and I never went back. It aint easy being brown.
A great place and the staff knows their products!
Need supplys? They have it. Theyll help with anything you need and especially if you are a coog
Quiet, but neat and the staff is very helpful. Also there is an educator and student discount.
Practically everything an art lover would need. A bit pricey but college students get discounts.
Great local art store with personal touch and help
Very helpful but staff and they offer a student discount.
