The DIY Joint is a great place for all people who like to create their own items out of wood. I took an intro class (Cutting Board) where they taught us how to mill lumber, glue it together and finish it into an amazing cutting board. We do not want to use the cutting board now, because it feels too nice to cut on. Then I started going into the space for my own projects. Its a great community where others are happy to help you learn how to use a new tool and share other tips. The tools are of high quality and Priscilla quickly repairs any that are out of order.
We came to DIY Joint to celebrate my husbands birthday. Our group of 15 had an amazing time! We got a little taste of real woodworking. We got to use a variety of power tools to put together our wine racks. At the end everyone left feeling very satisfied and happy with something they had created. The space is very nice and open. Priscilla was great at introducing each of the stations we would be rotating through and she floated around to make sure all of us were safe and knew what we were doing.Preparation for the birthday party was seamless. Priscilla is very easy to work with. My husband picked a wine rack design from a Pinterest board, and Priscilla designed the project for us!Highly recommend for your special event!
This place was so fun. Came here with my co workers and we made serving trays! The tutorial was spot on, and there was so much freedom to go at your own pace. You really create something spectacular from one single slab of wood. You can listen to music and bring your own snacks and drinks into the venue too. It was a unique and memorable experience. I would do it again for sure.
Absolutely love this place and the owner, Priscilla! My first experience was back in September when I booked the cutting board class. Priscilla was the instructor and she was very clear in her teachings and the rules of the shop. She was professional, super helpful, and extremely patient with those of us in the class as we learned to use these high-powered tools. Upon completion of the course, you receive your certification for open studio. Since then, Ive spent at least 5 hours a week at the shop working on my own personal projects. In fact, thanks to the DIY Joint and Priscilla, Im working on opening my own Etsy shop now! (Sawdust and Roses -- come check it out!)The people attending open studio are like a little community. Theyre so friendly, willing to answer any quick questions you may have (although everyone generally works on their own), and its nice to see the progress others are making on their projects, as well.Additionally, due to Priscillas encouragement, I completed the hand tools utensil course this weekend, as well. It was a one-day course (9am-2pm) and Glen was the instructor. I must say, he is next-level talented. He makes it look so easy! It was exciting to learn something new about this new hobby that I love so much. That said, I strongly recommend the DIY Joint to any beginner wanting to take a woodworking class to familiarize yourself with the tools, or even a novice just looking for a space to create. I would give this place 10 stars if I could!
I had such a great time during the 3 week Live Edge side table class! The class was perfect for a beginner (Ive never used power tools before) but moved fast enough that I felt like I was constantly learning and making progress on my table. Priscilla was amazing to work with! I had some custom specifications that I wanted (including a larger table and shorter legs to turn it into a coffee table instead of a side table) that she worked with me to make work. Ive never felt so empowered to take on a craft that was in the past so intimidating to me. I highly recommend this or any other class at the DIY Joint. Ive even already signed up for the Open Studio Certification because I cant wait to create some more unique projects for my home and friends/family. Thanks to everyone at the DIY Joint for a fun class, cant wait to come back!
This DIY Joint is great if youre looking to get into woodworking or need to rent it out for your own projects. Priscilla, the owner, found a wonderful spot in a quiet part of hoboken. I just finished an intro to woodworking class, and our instructor Peter was a blast to work with. Hes very knowledgeable of all of the tools that were used. The man is all about precision! I definitely recommend this place to anyone of all skill levels to come and take advantage of what this place has to offer. FIVE STARS!
I was a little nervous about taking the furniture making course because I’ve never attempted something like this before. Priscilla was an amazing teacher and made me feel very comfortable with all the equipment. I learned a lot and can’t wait to see where my new skills will take me! I would recommend any of the classes from The DYI Joint!
I took the Intro to Furniture Making class with instructor David (and Priscilla taught a class too!). The class was a lot of fun and I learned a ton. Priscilla and Dave were both extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. I had some experience with furniture making on my own and since the class-size was small I was able to ask specific questions about my projects at home and the teacher’s insights were invaluable. I can’t recommend this class enough. The shop is clean, safe, and provides all the tools you need to make beautiful furniture. I had multiple people reach out to me to build them furniture after posting images of the nightstand I made in class. I will definitely be taking more classes with DIY Joint.
The DIY Joint is great for anyone that wants to learn about woodworking. I recently finished the live edge side table w/ bowties and epoxy class with Priscilla. I’ve been wanting to build a custom desk top for a standing desk, so I decided to make a river table instead of a side table. In class, we learned how to flatten a live edge wood with a router, and apply epoxy and bowtie inlays to reinforce cracks. For an absolute beginner building a table top from scratch was pretty intimidating but Priscilla was really encouraging and hands on throughout the entire process. I absolutely love this place and is looking forward to my intro to furniture making class in Jan!
I just completed the Intro to Furniture class and it was fantastic. Peter Capar was our very very patient teacher and he was so helpful and enthusiastic. Originally I thought i just wanted to work on my own project to improve my skills but realized that doing a class would probably be more beneficial. Im glad I took the class because I really didn’t know as much as I thought I did. We covered everything from types of wood to use, how to select the best lumber, how to use a jointer, planer, bandsaw, table saw, belt sander/grinder, morticeer. Also, I learned how to properly clamp and be more accurate. Each class i learned something new and also a way to so something better. The DIY joint offers a lot of other classes, I’ve already signed up for one using hand tools, as well as having a full woodworking shop where you can book studio time. Yes this is a great place and yes this was brilliant class to do.
Class was very well structured. Class size was just right and everyone had face time with the instructor. The instructor was more than qualified and competent to handle the class. Safety was paramount and the instructor watched out for everyone. Time was managed very well. We all went home with a good product for an afternoons work. Will definitely do it again.
I took a Into to Lathe class here with Glen Guarino. Glen is a really nice guy who is woodworking artist in his own right. I found him to be patient, informative and extremely encouraging. Simply a great Joint
We celebrated part of my sisters bachelorette weekend at the DIY Joint! We had a blast! We all came to the class with no experience using most of the machines or working with many of the tools. Priscilla was clear and thorough in her explanation! The class is a huge step up from the wine and paint option. We made beautiful serving trays from one long piece of wood. The whole experience was educational, empowering, while also being light-hearted and tons of fun! We will definitely be back!
Great time working on our new wine racks. Priscilla was thoughtful and super patient. Cant wait to do it again. Thank you!
I live in Washington Heights, and have been looking for a woodshop space while furnishing my new apartment. The DIY Joint is well worth the trip. Priscilla is welcoming and incredibly generous with her time, knowledge, and expertise, and the Joint is better-equipped than any similar space Ive seen. Its clean, open, and big enough for multiple groups to work comfortably. Thank you so much, Priscilla! Ill be back :)
Highly recommend!I took an intro to woodworking class at The DIY Joint. In the class I took we made a cutting board out of 5 different species of wood. Priscilla is a very good instructor. She had a thorough understanding of the various machines we used. The safe operation of each machine was discussed before the first use and written instructions are placed next to each machine if a refresher is needed.
The cutting board class was great. It was my first experience with many woodworking machines and this class gave you a good understanding of using the jointer, planer, table saw and miter saw. I had a great time learning the techniques and safety required to make rough lumber into usable pieces. It was very much hands on and I appreciated the selection of dates and times to work with my schedule. I definitely will be taking another class here soon.
Ive taken two classes here, and highly recommend it for anyone interested in woodworking and building their skills! The instructors are patient and encouraging, and the other class members Ive had are always fun to work alongside! Awesome all around.
I enrolled in the milling/cutting board class and found it to be fun and interesting. Yoav is a competent and informative instructor. I really enjoyed the class and will be signing up for studio time in the near future!
Had a great experience here! Really great instruction, chill vibe, and friendly people in a beautiful work space. People interested in woodworking at any skill level (including complete beginners) should definitely check this place out!!
The furniture making class was an excellent experience. Its well worth the cost and the time. What Priscilla is doing both as an entrepreneur and as a craftswoman is truly inspiring. I hope to turn what she taught me into a life-long hobby.
The DIY Joint is perfect for any crafty person looking to create an awesome, new project. I never realized how satisfying it could be to actually build something for yourself! You also never realize how much work goes into building a table until you’re actually making one! I’m a total beginner with tools and wood in general, so at the start of the class I was not exactly “one” with the giant table saw. But as each class went on and the more the owner & instructor worked with me, the more comfortable I got and the more fun it became. Everyone can enjoy the pride that comes from building something of your own and telling people “I made that!”. Have to check this spot out. Fun, rewarding and overall an awesome experience. Can’t wait to start the next project :)
Definitely worth it.I took the Intro to Furniture - Side table - workshop, and enjoyed every minute of it. With Priscilla’s knowledge and great instruction, I found myself more excited to move on to the next step of completing the table…even though it was my absolute first time using any woodwork equipment.Ultimately it was a great experience which left me a little more knowledgeable, she gave lots of references, i.e. books, where NOT to purchase lumber, etc. And it all came to an end with me having a great side table to take home…so great that I had to gift it away to someone since I couldn’t make up my mind as to where it should stay in my home.Definitely will be going back there. Next on my list: The plant stand, and the bookshelf—both of which I intend on keeping this time. By then I’d like to try a simple project of my own in the open studio. If you’re THINKING about taking this workshop, stop thinking and just take it! She’ll have you using that scary band saw like a G in no time. You won’t be disappointed.
Glad to have found this place for such a rewarding and creative experience! I love the cutting board I created from my 3-week course. Loved learning about different woods, how to use the different equipment and tools, and the time carefully sanding and finishing my project. Also, the place so clean, shiny and new!
Great classes with hands on instruction for newbies.
Had a great team building event. Priscilla was very well organized and even though we had varied ability and experience levels everyone had fun.
Stop reading these reviews and go sign up for every class you can! I took a class with Priscilla and she couldn’t have been more detailed with her instructions and helpful throughout the project. The DIY Joint has a very special atmosphere and I look forward to taking advantage of every open session I can in the future.
Great experience. I used to do woodworking with my father. He passed away a while back and I had started buying tools and doing my own thing. When I saw this class it was the first thing on my Christmas list. It was everything I expected and a little more.I learned some things about woodworking I didnt know. Priscilla was knowledgeable, intelligent and helpful. I really enjoyed the class and recommend it highly.
Nice, clean layout with all the tools youd ever need (but dont want to buy). The shop safety class was the perfect introduction to the place and I cant wait to start cracking away on a few home improvement projects. Thanks!
The DIY Joint is anything but a joint. It is a well thought out educational studio in which those interested in learning about woodworking can be given instruction and appropriate mentoring. Those who are just brushing up can take advantage of the instructors experience and skill on the woodworking machinery. The machinery I used was a surprise and pleasure. It was all late model, clean and in good shape. For example, the table saw is a SawStop that is set up with an auxiliary outfeed table. I look forward to more classes there are using their studio time for my own projects.
I recently attended the furniture making class and I would like to share my experience. Let me start with the good things first, both the instructors are amazing, no matter how many times you ask them something, they will happily respond. I also like the class structure since they make you work towards an end goal (of making a table stand) and it is very organized. Few things that I think would have helped more is using tools that people normally use with DIY projects, e.g. Jig saw, hand held router, dowel joinery, pocket holes joinery etc. Their workshop has more expensive tools e.g. jointer, planer, band saw etc which I dont think anyone who is looking to develop a hobby in woodworking would really buy. I would have liked it more, if i had gotten an opportunity to make furniture using simpler tools which I can use at home too. Except this I think overall its a great class.
I took the Milling Lumber: Cutting Board class. As a beginner, with very limited woodworking and power tools experience, I found this class to be quite informative, as well as enjoyable. We went over various wood species, types and grain patterns. In the process of making the cutting board, we learned how to safely use several woodworking machines such as miter saw, jointer, planer, table saw, disc sander and more. Priscilla is a wonderful and knowledgeable instructor. She is great at concisely and thoroughly explaining all steps required to perform tasks and how to safely use the various tools. The location is also accessible through public transportation and within walking distance from the Hoboken path station. Overall, it was an awesome experience and I wholeheartedly recommend signing up for classes at The DIY Joint.
Great place to learn new skills and hone some old ones. I cant wait to sign up for my next class.
Fantastic experience! Great class and awesome space, will be back for more instruction as well as to work on my own projects!
Love this place! I found The DIY Joint in Hoboken when I was looking for a beginner woodworking class to take. I called the shop to schedule it. I spoke with Priscilla, the owner, who answered all of my questions and had me signed up in just a few minutes.I arrived for the first class (1 of 5) on a Tuesday evening in August. Tons of parking is available right across the street in an inexpensive parking lot, usually hard to find in Hoboken, but its also a short walk from the Train. Priscilla was also our instructor and she was great. She was friendly, attentive, and interesting. Over 6 weeks (She added a week at the end as we didnt finish in 5 weeks, at no extra cost- Nice!) She has a lot of experience and truly loves what she does. She walked us through the process of preparing the rough lumber, and milling it (cut off saw, jointer and planer.) Then she guided us as we used the table saw, mortiser, band saw, and sander. Then on to fit up, glue up and power and hand sanding. When we left (there were 5 in our class and it was just the right number of people) we were all very happy with our finished projects and felt that we had learned how to use several woodworking machines and had a great time! This is definitely an awesome resource for Hoboken and the New York City crowd. They offer everything from group classes, to Open Studio time, to one-on-one instruction. I cant wait to go back! Thanks Priscilla!
Cool space and awesome classes!
