Ill give it props for being still in business in an unforgiving culture. Used bookstores like Redux are becoming a dying breed; far worse is that a small city like GR cannot afford to lose them. That said, its an average used book store. It has a nice charm with a decent variety. The downside are the prices. Its absurd that 40 year old hardcovers in fair condition with frayed dust jackets are sold at 80% of their original list price.Matter of fact, every used book I pulled out was either priced at 75-80% of their list price and/or not priced at all. The latter being a very deceptive and dishonest practice especially since the price is not mentioned until the time of purchase. But to be fair, its a tough business and GR has only a handful of used and/or independent books stores. So one ought to be grateful.
Redux books offers a lot of old books from a diverse number of genres. I definitely recommend visiting if you have a love for old books! They look great as decoration or for reading.
Staff extremely rude, parking very difficult. Would give zero stars if I could. Go somewhere else.
While mass-publishing has done much good for modernity, at the same time it has brought a wretched curse unto us: the uglification of books. How many libraries and bookstores today boast many---if any---books with a design representative of the truth contained therein? Few. Most people have become complacent to the grotesque brutalism which has tricked down from art to architecture, fashion, food, media, book design, and nearly every other facet of life once good and wholesome. When one thinks of a classic book, he imagines a thick-covered, properly-bound tome tied together with flax threadwork, a vibrantly-striped headband, and three raised bands crisscrossing a durable spine, with pages of Venetian marbling and woodcut prints encasing a font which glides across the page like butter on a hot skillet. Dont judge a book by its cover, one may retort, but this exterior beauty and structural intentionality is a reflection of the interior beauty of the books content. When we abandon this for the beige placidity or abstruse mess nearly modern book falls into, we lose sight of the metaphysical need we have for beauty. We are ontologically starving ourselves to death.Shops like this are at the secular front of the war between the ugly and the beautiful, selling traditional books whereby one can beatify his library while the Truth beatifies his mind. This is not a war we can afford to lose.
Huge selection of books, all well-priced. Great location and easy to find, often has a cart full of deals outside as well.
A great place for picking up unique titles and things that are harder to find---great quality for most of the books, especially as theyre used. Take time to find treasures!
My favorite book store! Great selection and service, and reasonable prices.
One of my favorite bookshops in lower Michigan. They always surprise me with their inventory. The owner and his daughter are wonderful book lovers and it shows.
Brought in a cartful of books including a practically new DSM 5. Owner only took three and gave me $20 for the DSM. I shouldve just walked out without taking the 20 because I definitely got cheated. Whats worse...I would have bought more books if I was actually treated right and given my moneys worth. Not coming back, considering the price of their books and what you can get online. Very disappointed.
Eastown staple. If you love books definitely support local and check it out. Close to other great shops and restaurants
Its an old quirky bookstore, of course it deserves 5 star rating! (:
Like stepping into a time machine and a portal to other worlds at the same time!
Great used bookstore with awesome customer service! I called recently and spoke with the owner (who was very friendly btw) about a particular book title. He let me know that he knew of the book and has seen it come through before but it was not currently in stock. Unbeknownst to me he must have noted the title and my phone number and lo and behold the book came through a few days later and he called me! I was thrilled at his customer service and very happy to be getting the book I wanted and from a local business. Win - win! :) Give em a try next time you are looking for a book!
Expect mountains of books and organized chaos, like any respectable used bookstore. The owners are friendly and helpful...the reason I prefer Redux to the place next door. They have a good collection of classics. Have to stop in if Im in the area...just to look...
Really helpful. Large inventory
A very cozy and quiet used book store. Although I am not a voracious reader like my fiancee, it was still great fun to look at all the books that people liked to read 30-80+ years ago. In fact, I picked a copy of Dantes Inferno that had beautiful woodblock prints in it.
Quite possibly the best second hand bookstore Ive ever been to. Filled with gems, the atmosphere is perfect, and the owner is a darling. Cant recommend it enough
Owned by a very knowledgeable person who is kind and a real treat
This is a great store for book collectors. The owner is knowledgable about literature with a particular interest, it seems, in regional writers and subject matter. Something to keep in mind when you step into a shop like this -- entering is like stepping into a tenured university professors office. Know your stuff if you want to be taken seriously, have a thick skin and a sense of humor is always helpful. That said, GR is lucky to have a serious bookstore. Ann Arbor is a long drive.
Made a mistake. Thought I was being charged 50, was actually charged 15. Gentleman was helpful, and there are SO MANY BOOKS.
I feel cheated and want my money back. I ordered a set of 10 books. I received only one. I thought maybe they mailed them separately but nope. It says the order has been shipped and received. Im guessing there are ratings of some kind on Amazon. Ill be looking into that when I get a few minutes. Im so disappointment. This was supposed to be a birthday gift for my daughter. Guess Ill have to pay for them again from someone else and hope I dont get cheated this time.
Great, organized used book store. Didnt appear on Google Maps, but I happened across it. A whole section labeled CS Lewis, and was able to find some of the more obscure titles. Lots of old editions.
Spent a few delightful hours here today and found what I was looking for and more! Also appreciated the air conditioning 👍Dont forget to check out the basement 😉
Received on time and the condition exactly as stated on Amazon, perfect!
Every time I go into Redux the Owner is incredibly kind, generous, and resourceful. The staff is uncommonly knowledgeable and, if they dont have the product in stock, are full of other recommendations or local places where you may be able to find what youre looking for. The books are always well priced and in good condition.
Tons of selections to chose from, my only complaint is they may have too many books, it can be hard to find what youre looking for because of the sheer number of books in the building. Super friendly service too! A great place to find less expensive books.
Went to sell a hardback in very good condition. The blonde woman behind the counter stated that she would only be able to give me $1 maybe $2. The spine hasnt been broken and the book that came out this last October. The woman was very rude and condescending. Wouldnt recommend selling your books here for any reason. You wont get what its worth and youll be treated with rudeness.
Lovely shop with wall to wall books of all sorts. Owners are very kind. Love to visit when in need of a read.
Great bookstore with that bookstore smell we all love.Great selection of affordable and non-affordable (to me) collector books. This place has books on many subjects, but it isnt for everyone. If you want romantic vampire books or horny werewolves with 75 gray wangs then you need to go to a chain bookstore where they specialize in garbage. And the owner is nice.
A great location with many hidden treasures. The gentleman behind the counter was also very hospitable.
Probably one of the best used book stores Ive ever been to, with something for every type of reader and collector. Highly recommend stopping in to see everything.
Thousands of splendid books; a splendidly crabby bibliophilic proprietor who considers anyone who enters the door as a person to be respected as a creature made in Gods image, one attribute of which is being blessed with the intellectual and spiritual gift of reading. Clarence Hogeterp and friends are gifts of God impossible to be over appreciated.
I like this place. They specialize in older antique-like books, but also have a solid selection of regular used books as well. Also have a autographed book section. The owner has been super kind and helpful when Ive needed help finding things. I will be back.
I will never forget my #metoo moment when I had the misfortune of walking into this store in East Town. I was 16 years old and I was looking for my boyfriend who had probably wandered into Argos next door. The older male employee who was working asked if he could help me. I told him that I was just looking for my boyfriend who might have stopped in. He replied, I can be your boyfriend. I will never forget the rage I felt at being objectified at such a young age by a noticeable MUCH older man not to mention an employee of an establishment. I will always go to Barnes and Noble now.
I went there for the first time a few days ago with my room mates. Im not sure why people are saying the owner was rude :( He was very nice and quite funny when we were there. The basement of books was awesome. Youll for sure get lost down there for hours finding new books to read :)
Large selection of new and old books. Owner was very friendly and helpful.
Awesome store if you are into vintage books! The owners and staff are extremely helpful and friendly.
Extremely fun used and antique books store. It has books stacked floor to cieling throughout. Stop there on a walk through East Town along with Argos nextdoor. Friendly clerks are always good to interact with.
Love this store. Lots of interesting books!
Great place to find old unique books
Great bargin sidewalk selection. Very good selection of Books back & basement just ask; ) Summer reads.
Took the time to help me learn more about some old books I brought in. I loved looking around, as well.
Fantastic bookstore for finding just about any older book you might like. The staff are very helpful and pleasant.
Tons of books! Lots of classics you might have been looking for! If you didnt find it down the street you will probably find it here! You will pay the price however! Most of the books are expensive and there isnt any dickering on price. Lots to look at and fun to walk around!
So many books so little time, this was an awesome part of our vacation.
I love wandering around in here! Prices are a bit expensive, but they have something for everyone. Don’t miss the basement!
Very nice lady, they have books fricken everywhere - you could barely walk thru the aisles. But they didnt have what I needed.
So many options and great prices!!
Was there to sell some of my used books. Dont know if I just caught the guy on duty (probably the owner) on a bad day, but he was rude, disinterested, and condescending, apart from giving me a lousy deal for my books. Dont give them your business. There are other used books stores literally 10 yards down the road. Its a shame, because the store itself actually seems very nice.
Cool bookstore with a lot of character.
The staff seemed a bit distant to me. I am not sure why because he helped others while I was there. They have more books in the basement though the aisles down there are very close together. Parking is in the back.
You never know what youll find. Prices feel a little high for used books, and its not great for anyone with dust allergies, but its still worth visiting.
Owner was rude, asked him to look at a set of late 1800s books. Threw them around like they where brand new. Dont waste your time here.
Books need our love and this store and the owners are amazing
If you cant find your book there, it probably doesnt exist.
Very cool book store.
I would have given them 5 stars but they wouldnt take American express and I couldnt buy the books I wanted because I didnt have cash
Possibly my favorite place in GR!
Awesome selection of old books.
Quiet, friendly environment
Ill never go back. The staff member I spoke with was extremely rude and talked down to me. The other two used bookstores in East Town pay much more for used books.
Very nice
The owner is pretty rude
Classic book store
Check the basement!
