Absolute great service. I went in not knowing what was wrong with my car, they diagnosed me having a completely burned out clutch amongst a few other things and had me taken car of in a couple of days. Car honestly drives and feels brand new with the new clutch. These guys are worth every penny.

This company is a diamond in the rough. As a former mechanic, I know how hard is to find a service company that has integrity and this company has it in abundance. Every time I drop off my truck I know they are not going to make up work to line their wallets. They have always been very direct on the issue and are great at explaining the process. If I was a mechanic I would want to work with them.

This is from June 21, 2021. My cars alternator had died leaving me stranded, luckily just a couple minutes from this repair shop. I jumped the battery and made it to their parking lot right before the battery died again, due to the alternator not charging. The shop confirmed the alternator was bad and also that the battery was over drained and needed to be replaced as well. They replaced both the battery and alternator by noon the next day. Im a 15 minute bike ride away, so I paid over the phone and had them lock the key in the car so I could pick it up after hours (in order to avoid bicycling in heavy traffic).I ride my bike to the shop that evening and start the car. It barely starts and the idle is very low and the car is stumbling/shaking. I turn on the AC to stress the electrical and the car dies as if it ran out of battery. This happened twice in the parking lot. I did not feel comfortable driving the car home. I had to ride my bike back home.The next morning I go to the shop to tell them the issue about how it was barely idling. The first thing they say is that it probably just needs an idle relearn. I also mention how it shut down twice on me in the parking lot. Again they repeated the idle relearn. There was no apology for the fact they said it was complete and that I came to pick it up after hours but then had to bike back home and come back the next day. Ultimate they just drove it around the block so that idle would relearn, and it did relearn the idle and all does seem to be fine. They handed me the keys and again they repeated that thats all was needed, an idle relearn.In the end, they did replace the alternator and battery and the car is fixed, but they fail to apologize for the inconvenience caused by what should be a routine part of an alternator / battery being replaced. They drove it from the shop to the parking spot, did they not notice the idle was incredibly low and the car was shaking? Is this not in their checklist of things to do after this repair? The car shut down twice in the parking lot when I came to pick it up. How can i feel safe/confident to drive it home? Mistakes can and do happen, I understand that. Its about how you handle the mistake. They ultimately made it right, but were dismissive about my concerns that maybe this remanufactured alternator might have been dead on arrival. Additionally they left the positive battery terminal cover floating in the engine bay. This shop has lost my confidence and my future business.

Ed Shelton is perhaps among the few auto repair professionals to be absolutely customer centric and so honest with his customers. I wouldn’t take my cars anywhere else for service. It’s about the trust in his team. Every visit is a pleasure. Great waiting room, coffee, pleasant surroundings. I made an appointment to get my ac repaired TWICE and they said they couldn’t service me when I arrive to the shop. I made these appointments a week prior and they did not even acknowledge my inconvenience. They said I have to come back another time for the second time. I suggest you call your customers when you can’t follow through with an appointment, I wasted around 40 miles today for nothing!

Great and transparent service! When conducting a VA state safety inspection, they noted brakes required replacement. They quoted the price and encouraged me to call several comparisons. I was impressed by the nearly $200 difference! #Veteranfriendly

As a young woman with minimal knowledge about cars (and who has had the nearby Jiffy Lube attempt to tell her it would be $85 for a standard oil change...), I totally trust Virginia Automotive Services to be honest. I bottomed out and thought I had damaged either my catalytic converter or muffler. They easily couldve told me that it was indeed the catalytic converter for more $$$, but Richard was totally honest and helpful. They also got everything done very quickly, with time for enjoyable small talk and banter too. Highly recommend!

Called because they were in carmaxs warranty partnership program. Told the guy I had an ac issue with my Honda civic. Scheduled a 7am drop off. Went to drop off the car and the guy at the desk told me after looking at the car that they couldnt work on it because of the kind of refrigerant...had I known this would have been an issue i.e. the guy on the phone might have mentioned it. I would have saved myself the trip...oh and the money I wasted pre Scheduling an Uber I didnt need to use was super great too...

Broken promises. Says its guaranteed to be done by this time but isnt. Didnt even notify us that it wouldnt be either. Had to call them for an update. Rude while speaking to Richard. Tried to manipulate us but it didnt work. One minute hes telling us hes not the mechanic then next he acts as if he knows everything. Called him out on his lies and Im guessing thats what struck his nerve. Never again. Lost a loyal customer because his pride was bigger than his profession.

Did walk-in state auto inspection and they were able to accomodate me quickly with my first car and also scheduled a second car on the same day. I wouldnt hesitate to use them again and would use them for any repairs I may have in the future.

Have used this shop many times and always great service. Never had a problem with the quality of the automotive work. I have to say I was disappointed after the last visit. ☹️ They fixed my problem and it was reasonably priced. However, I read Ed’s email promising to sanitize the car and based on that decided to bring it in instead of to push off the service. After all, the car isn’t being driven much. When I picked it up though, it clearly had not been sanitized. 👎🏼 Nothing had been wiped down and items were moved around in the car. In my mind, everything within reach of the driver should have been wiped down. I was not looking for a detailed cleaning, but a wipe with a sanitizing wipe would have been nice. If you reply to this to acknowledge you read it I’ll happily delete the review. I just feel like you should have lived up to the promise and wanted to let you know I was disappointed. Thanks

These guys really take the service part of their name seriously. It is really refreshing to have finally found a mechanic for my older, high-mileage car that does not see $$ signs and try to gouge me on repairs. They did a lot of work on my car a couple of years ago for a reasonable price without sacrificing the quality of the work. I recently was quoted $2,400 by AAA to fix a seat motor in my car that caused it to fail inspection. VAS found a solution that would cost me under $400. This is truly a place where you can tell them every little problem your car has, get their honest expertise on whether the work absolutely needs to be done, and a price quote they will honor. Basically, they do what they say they will do, for what they say it will cost in the time they tell you it will take. 10/10 recommend.

We have been taking our cars to VAS for 3 years now. They provide excellent service and their prices are fair. Most important, I trust them to be honest to not over bill or recommend things not needed; and thats something you cant put a price on. Richard always thoroughly explains what needs to be serviced so I can make the best decision. A couple of times hes made recommendations (spark plugs and serpentine belt) and Ive ignored them only to find in a few months that I should have listened. Hes definitely earned my trust and that is priceless.

The last time I came to your shop I bought new tires and got an inspection.I did not pass my inspection but was told fixing the rust on the frame should be easy, but you all couldnt do it.Well, no one else could fix my issues either. I had to sell my truck and buy a new one, so essentially I wasted $600 on new tires for someone else. Thanks for that!Thats why my review went to 0 stars.

I HIGHLY recommend this place!Normally I only write reviews when I am mad, so this should review should say a lot about this place.I had inspection done by a different shop and I was under the impression I would need a lot of repairs (roughly $4k) for my 03 truck with a lot of rust. I came to Virginia Automotive Service for a second opinion. They re-inspected my truck and informed me that while it did need work, it would be less than half the value I was originally given.They provided quick service and I can already tell my truck drives better. I spoke with Richard (I believe he is the manager) and he gave me a lot of good advice about my truck and the quality that it is in. I will definitely be going back here. Once again, I highly recommend this place.

This is a great place! Our relationship with them started a few years ago when the brakes went and we had the car towed there. They worked with us around what had to be taken care of that moment and what could wait. I trust when they say work is worth doing and what is not. I had a situation where something was caused by an error and they fixed without any charge to me. They were great about it. I highly recommend them!

Fast, friendly, and honest. I thought I needed a lot more maintenance work than I did and VAS could have agreed with me and I would have never known. Instead they did the right thing and earned an enthusiastic customer.In addition to the service the waiting room is fantastic. Its calm, separate from the front office, theres a place for a couple people to do work on their laptops, Internet is fast, and overall very comfortable.

I just went for my annual state inspection (and all I ended up needing was a new wiper blade) so I cant necessarily speak to the repair services, but I can say that the whole process was quick and easy. I made an appointment online a couple of weeks in advance (highly recommended) and heard back almost immediately. I was in and out in less than a half hour even though the shop was busy. Everyone was really nice too. Id go back in the future.

I came to Richmond from out of state to look at a used car for my daughter. Wanted to get it looked over by a mechanic before purchase. Looked online to find a local family-owned business like my home mechanic. I hit the jackpot! They worked me in promptly, finished within the expected time frame (40 min), and allowed me to dodge a bullet! In spite of the fact that this car had new brakes, new tires and a new timing belt (sounds great, right?), they found a leaky head gasket that had been missed by the sellers mechanic, and would be a very pricey repair. Not only did Richard at VA Automotive point this out and discuss the risk involved and cost of repair, but he took the time to work up a market valuation from the NADA website and discuss the price at which this car would be a value. In addition, he pointed out a recall issue that was outstanding on the car, and printed out the recall information for me. Service was above and beyond. If I lived in Richmond, I would never take my car anywhere else! Thank you so much for making me feel right at home, like one of your favorite, long-time customers.

7 a.m. appointment to get inspection/oil change. They took my vehicle promptly at 7 a.m., honored a coupon presented to them and allowed me to additionally add/pay for a fluid change. Got out around 8:15 a.m. which was early than anticipated. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Felt I was treated with respect and appreciation.

I had a slow leaking tire that needed to be repaired. I was heading to Firestone next door who said to bring it in and the wait will be about 2 hours. When I got there I couldnt find any parking spot close by. I ended up parking right by Virginia Automotive so I decided to pop in to see if they can have a look. Richard quickly got a tech to take a look and had it repaired. He didnt even charge me. I was so pleasantly surprised. I will bring my car in for future service needs. Thank you Richard.

I learned about this place because of the “members” program which gives you access to routine maintenance at discounted rates. Not only can they get most services done pretty quickly, but they’re always super attentive. Some mechanics will try to get you to spend as much as possible - but Virginia Automotive tells you what is essential and they give you a list of priorities so you can budget accordingly while maintaining your car in great shape! At this point, I don’t really trust any other mechanic shop because of the personalized experience I get with them.

They were very kind, got it taken care of quickly and cost effectively, and sent me on my way in a loaner as quick as possible. Loaner was free, they offered 90 day no interest financing, and let they are a CarMax Warranty guaranteed auto shop! Richard and Terry are great to work with - proud to be a return customer!

My experience here was fantastic. I am new to Virginia so I was a little worried about dealing with mechanics that I was unfamiliar with but after my visit Ive found a new home for my car. All the work was explained. The office staff were very professional, polite and courteous in person and over the phone.

I was referred to this shop by Carmax. Moments after dropping my car off, Richard called me to give me an update. From that point on, anytime I called, Richard was my main contact and kept me informed. Every time I called, he sounded like he was in a good mood. Terry and crew have been wonderful to us! We randomly found them when our car broke down and towing delivered us down the street to them during the summer. Terry worked with us to repair the car over a few weeks so that we could gather the resources for the repairs. Last week, we asked him to take care of one needed repair that had previously been postponed and several maintenance issues that I knew needed to be done ... he got all of it done in a few days - really took the time to make sure it was done right and gave us a loner car so that we could have the car in the shop that long. He goes over everything needed so that we understand the problems and solutions ... in other words, he has never acted as though women are not smart enough to understand or can be tricked into doing unnecessary repairs. He indicates what he sees as priorities, what would be good but optional and what can wait. Virginia Automotive in Glen Allen is now our go to shop even though it is on the other side of RVA from where we live ... because honesty, respect and appreciation are important to our family. We value ethical behavior in our relationships ... business and otherwise. I would recommend Terry and crew to anybody looking for good quality auto service. As a woman buying a used car I wanted to take my car to a certified mechanic.I asked for a full evaluation Richard quoted me $1900 for minor repairs. It took me two paychecks And their credit loan for me to pay for repairs and then pick up my car. when I picked up my car, my car hadn’t even had an oil change after the shop had it for three weeks. I felt like something was wrong then. Now one week after that the car broke down and needed a jump. A different mechanic looked at it and told me my battery had Corrosion and needed to be replaced. the next week I’m in the car with my grandson in the engine blew. I hadn’t even made my first payment on the credit loan and I’m still obligated to pay it. I called the shop and Spoke to the manager Richard Who stated that he “did not tell me everything that was wrong with the car on the full evaluation because,my car was older and if he would have told me everything it would’ve cost me a lot of money “ however, I paid him for a full of evaluation ! I wanted to know exactly what was wrong with the car. The manager Richard also took no accountability for knowing anything was wrong with the engine. Richard’s exact words to me was “that the engine was fine when I left.” Heartless...I then had to resort to renting cars and catching a lyft 17 miles work because, I was scammed out of my money.

I only take my car to this place. They are very nice and honest. I havent had any problems with them. The awesome customer service, location & the fact that they do not pressure you to buy additional services will keep me coming back. I recommend them all the time to people I know.

Richard saved me today! I need my car for work and woke up to a dead battery this morning. My local shop couldnt see me until the afternoon and that wasnt going to work for me. Richard was very helpful and didnt hesitate to help me right away. He sent me to grab a coffee and had me all set and on my way before I could even ask for an update. I have a new local shop!

This morning I had a couple questions and concerns about a slow start and a rattling noise in my 2007 Toyota Matrix. Firestones diagnostic said the battery was fine and they were going to charge a TON to look and see what the rattling noise was.My husband had a gift card for VAS so I decided to call them and check them out. On the phone they were super super helpful and informative and transparent and fair with their quote. VAS figured out the issues and gave accurate suggestions without being pushy. Turns out the battery DID have a dead cell and need to be replaced. Triple As battery test showed that it failed as well. The rattling noise was the exhaust manifold heat shield getting a bit old and loose -- no big safety issues there. 👍👌They respected my knowledge and understanding of my own car and didnt treat me differently because of my gender or young looking appearance. Hallelujah. 😂😅 No forcing me into doing repairs that werent urgently required now for safety. High integrity, LOW PRESSURE, LOW STRESS. 🙌I (and probs my husband too!) will be heading back there for future repairs and maintenance needs!! Thanks Richard and team!

Got a pre-purchase inspection on my Hyundai Sonata on a Saturday morning. GREAT service, good prices, really nice waiting room, and even better people. What absolutely amazing people at this shop! Theres nothing like starting your work day with a broken down car and realizing youre not going to work after all. My starter decided to quit on me this morning and these guys took care of me, making sure I had an appointment set up so I didnt have to wait. I had my vehicle towed here at 11am and by 4pm, I was driving it out of there. Which is awesome for a costly repair like that, same day, just dropping it off with little more than a phone call for notice. Of course, 3 days before payday, I couldnt afford the sudden bill dropped on my lap, so these gentleman also got me set up with an easy pay financing option, which is REALLY going to help me out once payday does hit. I seriously cannot thank these guys enough for their hard work and kindness. Thanks so much!

My transmission was replaced for my 2016 Nissan Rogue. I bought my rogue used and had no idea that I would need a new transmission, but once it was replaced I noticed that my car runs a lot better when I first purchased it. I am also very satisfied of the time frame and work performed and the expertise of Virginia Automotive Service.

Facility was clean and inviting. Even though I didnt have an appointment and there other repairs before me, they were able to fit me in and get me out very quickly. Met with Terry, the General Manager, who is striving to make a reputable and referable name for the business. In an industry with a history of scaring (and sometimes scamming) customers for unnecessary repairs, it was really refreshing to meet someone who suggested, not pushed, only those repairs and services needed, nothing else. Will definitely be going back in the future with any repairs I cant do myself.

I had a fairly complex problem. Took them three days to duplicate and diagnose. Two bad sensors. They kept me updated the whole time. The overall price was extremely fair. I ended up adding additional services. So glad I found this place.

I have visited this place on multiple occasions previously and was extremely satisfied with their service. On this occasion I am not happy with them. I spent almost $140 for a state inspection and and oil change.As a single woman, the one fear that most would anticipate happened. They offered all kinds of service to freak me out about my car. They offered so much maintainence service that they failed to do the additional things I actually asked them to do. When I inquired the extra work that I could see wasnt completed, I was given some bogus response that they did the best. But if this a full repair shop, I dont understand why they didnt fix it or find a way to do so. Im angry about the service, Im angry about the cost and I guess its safe to say they wont get my business again. I will continue using my dealership if Im going to be ripped off.The man in the front is nice but now Im mad at him because he didnt follow through as he promised.

First off, they told me they might not be able to get me in since there was only one person working and they told me they would give me a call back of they were able to get my car in. They eventually got my car in and after they told me I needed to resurface my headlights and change my turn light signal bulbs since they were out. Im positive they randomly tacked on these charges because Ive never had to resurface my headlights for a state inspection before, and I certainly dont recall my turn signal light being out. Dont come here if you need a state inspection.

My state inspection was performed.While They did review the maintenance of my vehicle and made suggestions there no mandatory items for the inspection.

Scheduled an appointment for the wrong location and the guy at the front desk worked some magic and fit me in for my appointment at the location I was at. I didnt have to wait or come back another day.Very quick and friendly

I am sort of a shade tree / backyard mechanic and tend to do a lot of the minor work on my own vehicle. My AC recently went out in my 2014 Nissan Maxima and I did the research and diagnosis to determine my AC compressor was shot. Research showed I also needed to replace the AC condenser, drier and TXV. I tore the front of my car off, replaced everything and put it back together. At this point the compressor clutch would not engage. I wanted to take my vehicle to someone smarter than I am. I did not previously have a relationship with a full-on mechanic shop in the area. On a recommendation from a colleague I brought my car to VAS. Often, when you tell a mechanic / shop that you have done some work on your car they make stupid faces and condescend to you. These folks were very understanding and said theyd do a complete diagnosis for me. I explained what I had done and they took notes. It wasnt very long after I dropped my car off that I was contacted and told the compressor I installed was dead out of the box. They explained the troubleshooting they had done in detail to confirm this. I was looking at a diagnostic fee, replacing the defective unit where I got it and then doing another tear down on my day off. They said they could work it out so they could get the part locally and I could pick my car up, repaired by the end of that day. I was figuring they were counting the money already... They quoted a very fair price for this expedited service and I jumped on it. My time, and theirs, is worth something and in this case, their courtesy, quick turnaround and technical aptitude sold me. I highly recommend this location in Glen Allen and will consider them again the next time I want to pay for work to be done.
