After watching YouTube videos on this area and The Rice Museum, we are so grateful we were able to come and visit, experience everything the museum had to offer, look at the beautiful art work displayed, and lastly take a tour of the museum lead by Vinny. She is incredibly knowledgeable, passionate and dedicated to ensuring people understand the history related to this area. This museum and tour are a must see.
This has the potential for being an interesting and informative tour. Unfortunately this was the last tour for the day and our guide seemed mostly motivated by the thought of going home for the long weekend (July 4).The tour began with a 15 or twenty minute historical presentation. Followed by a rapid race past the numerous displays. Little, if any time was given to look at any of the exhibits in depth. Although initially we were told we could walk through the museum on our own, that was not true. We had to take the tour.WARNING. The building has three floors. They have extremely high ceilings and the one elevator isnt operating. Its a challenge if you are in reasonable condition. Id say its out of reach for anyone with physical challenges. Oh, the cost is about $5 for seniors. All that being said, it is a very interesting historical presentation. Just dont take the last tour on a Friday.
I have been inspired by rice. I am selling my possessions and starting a Rice farm/ice machine called- (R)ice . Thank you rice museum. Rice is my life now. Long live (R)ice
Very happy we decided to wait for a tour in this special museum. The guide was so knowledgable and offered such a unique perspective on the history of rice, Georgetown, and America in general. Fascinating collection and exhibits, and a unique behind-the-scenes look at the lovely clock tower. Highly recommend!
Great exhibits, and a lot of knowledge about the long history of the area. Unfortunately the tour seemed rushed? Not sure if it was really the tour guides fault? Or more because they dont have enough staffing due to covid? We all felt kinda rushed through the exhibits, and a lot of it is skipped? We where allowed to hang out or go back on our own, but I really wish the could space the tours out a bit more? And allow the guide to take their time more.
Awesome experience of the history and culture of rice production in South Carolina. A must see!
We loved it, so much true history to learn. Keep sharing the truth and we hope to return someday. Best wishws on your remodeling.
We went to Georgetown for the day. The main attractions are the waterfront and tours. The Rice Museum was very informative but not really museum quality. Worth the $7 for the guided tour.
Excellent experience for the historian that gave us a tour through the rice museum today. We learned so much today and she was extremely knowledgeable. Thank you answering all of our questions.
They have a beautiful gift shop, Enjoyed the tour very much. It was pretty simple and straight forward, but there were some very cool things to look at (Im not going to post the coolest pictures I took because not knowing what you are about to see kept it interesting). The best part was the hospitality and how our guide kept things interesting. I would recommend this tour if your not from the area and dont know anything about the rice industry.
The place is interesting but the tour guide begins by telling you she’s a cultural historian and won’t discuss the artifacts. She treated us like schoolchildren and made us leave the floor so she could bring another group up, she ha an attitude issue and needs some retraining. We left after she forced us to leave the second floor. This was sad because we were learning a lot from the exhibits but she made the experience unpleasanti
Fascinating history of Georgetown. I enjoyed learning something new.
The museum captures the history of Georgetown County, its legacy of agriculture, wealth, trade, slavery, and its downfall, all told through the lens of rice production. They have some remarkable and unique artifacts, such as the remains of colonial Browns Ferry Vessel.
For a nominal fee, you can learn about the significant history of rice (as well as indigo and timber) in Georgetown, SC, as well as observing some art, historic artifacts, and the remnants of the oldest remaining boat from colonial times. An informative display of some important African Americans from the area is also included. I especially enjoyed the phenomenal story of Joseph Hayne Rainey. This little gem of a museum packs some interesting information into a small space. As a bonus, the surrounding community is quaint and walkable, and Indigo Bakery next door serves up some delicious treats as a wonderful end to your experience. 😊
We arrived just in time for the 3 o’clock tour, but they shuffled us in a hurry to catch the tail end of the previous tour. The tour guide mainly only spoke of slavery and skipped over other aspects. It was rushed and haphazard. As soon as we joined her group, I asked if we were allowed to film and she said yes. But then, she interrupted herself 3 different times, each time going on and on about how she is a published writer, it takes a year for her books to be edited, etc., and therefore,1st time - don’t record her voice2nd time - don’t film her3rd time - don’t film anythingWe were being quiet and only filming the artifacts in the museum. We left feeling very unwelcome. We went down the street to another museum where we were welcomed and enjoyed it very much, including spending quite a bit in the little store. The Rice museum needs someone to go in undercover and see how things are being handled.
Knowledgeable tour guide and a lovely art gallery downstairs Great history lesson!
Great learning experience.
Interesting but a little clunky. Hard to know if youre walking into a gallery gift shop or a museum. Our tour guide was authentic and personal, but lacking confidence and security of knowledge on the subject. Overall we enjoyed it. Might be better if the museum became its own identity separate from the art gallery.
The Rice museum was a great place to spend the day. I enjoyed seeing the displays and learning about Georgetowns historically significant rice economy. We even got to go up into the clock tower as part of the tour. Their tools were all handmade and specifically designed with intended tasks in mind.
Great history at the Rice Museum. The people, the migration and artifacts were riveting.
It had very good exhibits and information and it was even hands on it gave you rice from the plant and let you shell it and all!! It showed an entire boat ruin that was really cool! Its placing was very unique inside of a clock tower.
Interesting and informative. Loved the river boat skeleton.
Very nice tour, and very fascinating history behind rice production.
Fabulous
I loved the Rice Museum tour.....so much history here! And I love the gift shop/gallery....bought a beautiful cotton-pearl necklace. Ill definitely be back!
Very interesting tour. Very informative tour guide. Lot of information about history of area
Great place, so much history and information. Super good educational experience for anyone.
We thoroughly enjoyed the museum - a fascinating tour through the local history of rice and indigo production. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and this a most enjoyable and educational experience.
Great little museum of the history of Rice in America. Had no idea how much influence South Carolina had on the rice industry. Guide was informative and provided great entertainment.
We have been here several times. You can always find something unique here. The staff is super nice and helpful. We always buy some Carolina rice when we come.
We never knew the story of how rice was brought into South Carolina. The tour guide who showed us around was very knowledgeable and funny. Worth taking the tour.
What fun!! PLUS theres a fabu handmade jewelry section downstairs.
I learned quite a bit about rice cultivation and found it very interesting. My guide was knowledgable and very cordial. I will be back to show friends this gem.
I enjoyed learning about SCs history. However, I was disappointed with how slavery was discussed. At one point the guide said, The slaves were essential. But he made no mention of the injustice of it all. As he had gone over the various facts and life expectancy of the slaves, no emotion or remorse was shown in tone or word choice. One of the other people in the group must have felt the same way I did because he spoke up and pointed out that the slaves had not come willingly. There is a wonderful opportunity at the Rice Museum to speak to the injustice of slavery. I think that would be a wise addition to the tour. I would still recommend you go keeping in mind the great injustice that you are learning about and what man is willing to do for money.
Historical tour with guide in small group. Interesting for adults and older children (3rd grade and up). #Georgetown history. #Rice culture in USA.
This was so interesting to me. Until I visited Hamilton Plantation I had no idea that rice was a commodity in colonial america. At the Rice Museum this major cash crop is explained from its beginning until its demise the late 1800s. A geniune inclusion of the slaves role and contribution is presented. I did, however, feel rushed through the displays in the tower and would have liked the oppotunity to read the plaques and study the dioramas. I would have appreciated a discuss on the Native Americans who came before and what happened to them.
A guided tour is required. It takes an hour or so. Groups are small and the guide was entertaining. For that you get to touch a wrecked ship built in 1700, flip through historic hardware store ledgers, and learn the brutality of this once global industry via well made diaramas.
A nice place to get a education on rice growing in SC. Learned a lot of things I never knew. The only problem was I had to walk upstairs to the museum section and I am disabled and stairs are not my friend. I did it but held up the group I was in. Anyway I would go back and enjoyed the store downstairs on the first floor. They have beautiful photos that are from local artists and very unique art pieces made local. If I had a extra money I would’ve bought more. I will be back being there is a art piece I want and if it still there it’s meant to be mine. I plane on that. Must stop and take your time and take in SC history.
Knowledgeable tour guide. LeArned a lot about rice growing in the low country.
A very nice history lesson on SC rice industry and the growth of SC prosperity on the backs of slaves. The guide was very informative and nice.
What a wonderful treasure in a quaint little townLast year named Georgetown SC as best little coastal seaside town in the South to retire to.Great gift shop for unique Christmas gifts
The docent was full of information, and the admission was well worth the price. The subjects of rice and indigo cultivation were given passing mention in my S.C. history class 50 years ago, and I learned things that were never mentioned, like the meaning of pluff mud, and the hydrological features that made Georgetown County a good place to grow rice.
Quaint museum. Beautifully managed.
Great look at the history of the area. Highly recommend
Very nice little museum. pleasant guided tour and I enjoyed the history lesson. The admission prices were higher than advertised but still very reasonable.
Anxious to go back in the future. Unfortunately, due to expected flooding from Hurricane Florence, the museum was closed the day I tried to visit. The location, the building, as well as, their outdoor garden space were impressive, I look forward to going back, and actually touring the museum soon.
A good history of rice growing in the area
Thet have interesting and unique items for sale, a great store
The tour guides, Phil and Xenobia were excellent. The museum is a gem. I was enlightened about the entire history of rice in the colonies, the wealth it generated and the influence it had on perpetuating slavery.
Tour was to long. Info could have been given in a shorter time. Tour was informative.
Very awesome experience. We had a great tour guide. Such a informative tour
Our guide was very informative... stairs are involved.. lots of history...
This is a small Museum but I found my visit here to be immensely interesting. Learned a lot about the history of the state and saw some really interesting artifacts. If you have any interest in the history of Lowcountry South Carolina or the rice industry you should definitely pay a visit to this Museum.
This place was amazing and everyone was really nice and the gift shop and museum were really awesome
A fantastic museum. Love the staff and their knowledge
Wonderful history about rice in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
Check out the unique gifts and incredible artwork!
Very much enjoyed the rijksmuseum to Natalie was a great guide
Very interesting. I learned so much from our tour guide.
Guided tour was great. Just do if you want to learn the history of the area.
Thoroughly well done tour by Phil. Highly recommend to understand the rice culture in Georgetown County and the Waccamaw Neck
Fabulous. Lots of new insights.
The Historian for the museum knew her facts very well.
Very informative, glad we went to museum before visiting plantation.
Really interesting historical exhibit of how rice was cultivated in sc. Learned a lot about how slave rice plantations worked - very sad part of u.s. history but important to understand. I grew up visiting abolitionist houses in ct with secret tunnels and learned of cotton and rice plantations but the tour taught me a lot i didnt know - rice being such a huge part of the wealth of many families in sc. And all from a grain brought from madagascar.
Very interesting tour and history of cultivation and significance of product and workers of this crop.
Nice interesting place to visit while in georgetown
Very enlightening museum in an old historical structure lead by a docent.
Very interesting. Very knowledgeable guide.
Experience history at this local museum, and stroll around town to see all the local shops too!
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Loved the tour!!
Really enjoyed the museum, our guide was great! Lots of artifacts and history.
Nice place to view and purchase artifacts
So much I didnt know about the local culture. I sure learned a lot!
Great underrated Museum on rice industry in South Carolina
Lovely way to spend an afternoon in Georgetown learning about local history.
Wonderful history lesson!
Worth the tour! I had no idea of the importance of rice in the area history and the effect on the early economy ..!
The most rudest people in Georgetown, after the fire in 2013 they filed an insurance claim for fire damage to the roof. Said that the water sprayed on the roof caused damage. But there was no water even close to the building. If you donated money for the repair you got ripped off. Ive had to call the police to this place twice, they try to block the driveway and have been told many times it is not theirs, Jim Finch is a scam, he takes peoples stuff that is for sale and uses it elsewhere, and tells them its in the store room, Jim got 600 thousand dollars to repair the building, clock still does not work, they say the people who repaired it wont make good the warranty, quess he didnt pay them or they would have fixed it, the creepy guy in there harressed four different people over the past weekend about using the drive, he will be getting another visit from the police department soon. The two old ladies in there have been caught lieing to the police and everyone else
Had a lot of info that me and the wife didnt know about. And guides was vary nice.
