Nice bikes, expensive as well with no layaway, but Id still invest in one. Stop by for a test drive to see how comfortable you are with it before purchasing. Worth the time to check them out, not like any electric bikes Ive ever seen. Small business doing big things, Im going back Saturday.

I sent them an email and despite never doing business with them, they quickly responded with a wealth of information and found the parts I needed. They really went above and beyond. Despite the fact I had never been a customer before or even set foot in their shop the owner Alex sent me detailed diagrams and even a video showing the parts he had and explaining how the kick start system on my bike works.Coming from my experiences with other specialty shops (mostly automotive) I was blown away at how kind, knowledgeable, and generous the staff at Detroit Moped Works are. Regrettably even after several years, every time I go into my garage and see the moped, I have to say we feel we wasted $2500 as we had buyer’s remorse for buying an old moped that was basically in it’s last few days of life. Despite them tweaking it for us, it never worked or if it started it broke down often and had to be pushed or pedaled back. This review is to let you know to just buy their new ones if you are not able to repair things yourself. Don’t make a poor decision like we did.

Alex and his team do great work. I had a Honda Express they got running better (and faster), and then recently had them do some work to my 1977 Tomos A3sp. The moped fought them quite a bit (I was unaware how much of a pain A3sps are to work on), but they made some suggestions, performed all the work, and it now drives, stops and looks awesome. It starts right up, and I use it damn near everyday for tooling around town, or running small errands. I couldnt have asked for a better experience!

Super helpful and knowledgeable guys. I called about sending them an engine to be rebuilt and they gave me solid advice, even though it didn’t involve me actually purchasing from them. They didn’t have to go ask some other guy either, dude who answered the phone knew exactly what he was talking about and went through options with me over the phone. Great experience.

I called to ask a price on a part. I spoke to Alex who explained to me the difference between a moped and scooter, and said they dont sell scooter parts. Now I use my moped as my main mode of transport around the city.UPDATE: almost 2 years later, still using the mopeds. Brought them in for tune ups, and a few cable replacements. Always got my bikes back, running better then when I brought them in.

After we brought this 1978/79 Columbia open road in, we payed $150+ to get “everything” fixed and were told that they test rode the moped and that it worked great. Apart from the fact that after we payed $150+, we were given back a moped with a now broken speedometer, and completely unrideable due to the fact that the spark plug boot was loose. After about 30 seconds of riding, the spark plug boot would fall off due to slight vibrations and the engine would cut out, forcing you to pull to the side of the ride and put the boot back on. After I found a way to keep the boot on, I rode for about a week and a half, and noticed that the moped progressively got more difficult to start. At this point it is completely un-startable and simply the belt just spins and spins. Recently, we gave up after spending hundreds of dollars at this joke of a repair shop, and out the moped on the curb for someone else to sink money into. If you’re looking for a quick way to find an endless money pit, this is the place!

Expensive but, it looks like good work and friendly staff. They didnt offer me the old/replaced parts from the service work I had done, and it cost a bit more than expected but, overall it looks like a good place.
