Had the heads on my Chevy cleaned out, resurfaced and completely gone through and I couldnt be more satisfied!! From start to finish they were up front with what the work entailed, what it was going to cost, and what I needed to do afterwards. I left with no question unanswered and most importantly leaving with exactly what I asked for. A day earlier they said itd be done I should add!!! Attention to detail couldnt be better. Will be back!

You spark eroded a busted head stud from a block for me and was unsuccessful. I was told there was nothing more that could be done. I then supplied another unknown condition block which was machined. Turned out the head bolt holes were already stipped and some how that made it past scrutiny. Which I didnt find until assembly. I also asked for a main bearing line hone which was not done and became obvious when the crank was installed.. now I have a very expensive shinny piece of paper weight. I then found a shop that could finish the job on the original block. Poor attention to detail. I may be a rookie but thats why I paid Professionals

Took a gunked up warped cylinder head to them to get clean and decked. When I arrived, I mention what I had and said I wanted it cleaned and milled. They came out and looked at it and said it was a head that was prone to cracking. They called me a couple hours later saying it had been machined and that it was ready. When I went to pick it up, they had forgotten the cleaning part and had only milled it. I took the head to another shop to get cleaned, after which they found it was cracked. Upon calling Gunn to ask for a refund, they refused and said it was my fault for not telling them to clean it. If you saw this cylinder head, you would be stupid for not having the shop clean it before machining it, let alone allowing you machinist put this through a machine. I dont know if it was a miscommunication or what, but their service recommendations are terrible and I wouldnt trust them with any more service. Just glad I took it to another place to have checked before I reinstalled it.

Took in my 454 big block to be worked on. Once there we talked about what was needed to be done as well as a set price for the work. Got a call that it was done. Went in and got ripped off. Work was done to it that was never supposed to be done. Not o let that the price went up another $400 which is outrageous. Claims to remember the work you wanted to be done but doesn’t even remember who you are when you walk in! Once I confronted him about it he got all jittery and nervous started stumbling over his words. Save yourself the hassel and do not get work done here! TJ is not a trustworthy owner he’s a thief! Highly disappointed in the service! Total rip off!

Excellent machine shop. The shop is very clean and organized which is a giveaway for how a machinist treats his craft. TJ was very knowledgeable and answered my fishing questions in ways that convinced me to use his services. He didnt try to up-sell me on anything unnecessary but recommended the appropriate services for what I was looking to do with the engine. The work was completed within the promised time, the work micd out within spec, and the parts came back clean enough to eat off. The prices were extremely reasonable for the services performed.I have to comment on the negative review about a 383 stroker. This review is baloney. Theres no way a machinist would grind through a 350 sbc water jacket while clearancing rod bolts for a 3.75 stroke. The jackets in that area are thick (about 1/2), and clearancing for a proper 383 stroker crank and I-beam rod combo only requires taking off .125 at most and usually only .06 or less with cap-screw rods. A hack machinist wouldnt spend the labor sitting there grinding through 1/2 of cast iron. If the machinist at Gunn did in fact hit a water jacket, then the block had a faulty air pocket in the casting, and Im sure the machinist would have insisted the reviewer have the hole welded up. But I doubt anything in that review is factual. Where are the photos of this hole and the water-oil? Not uploaded to Gunns Google page for some mysterious reason. The reviewer says the hole in the water jacket was 1/4 diameter. If that were true, the radiator and block would have emptied every ounce of coolant into the oil pan within two minutes of the engine running at 2,000 rpm. That additional 2 gallons of coolant in the engine would have drown the crank and had foamy oil-water puking out of the breathers, carb, exhaust, etc. During the 18 minutes of 2,000 rpm cam break-in that the crankcase was full of coolant, the engine temp would have quickly climbed to 270 plus and coupled with water running through the oil pump, bearings, lifters, valves, etc. seized. But the reviewer claims he ran the engine for the 20-minute cam break-in, didnt say anything about overheating, and only then found water in the oil after shutting off the engine? Then he tore down the engine and found no issues aside from the hole? Baloney. The crank journals would have been blue and every bearing fried.

I found Gunn online and decided to take them my parts after hearing positive feedback from some friends. I was building a Chevy 383 stroker. The work I had done was a resleeve of a cylinder, decking the block, performing a line hone, and clearancing the block for some H-beam rods. We also balanced a rotating assembly, flywheel, and pressure plate. My first red flag should have been when they wanted to externally balance my internally balanced crankshaft. The next was when they cut into the bottom of the water jacket when making clearance for the rods. I was told it was a pin hole and that it was fixed, so they moved forward under my approval. I received all of my components back 3 weeks later then what they quoted me and built the motor. Fired it up and broke in the new cam. Found milkshake on the dipstick after shutting the car down. I figured I messed up the intake gaskets so I replaced those and fired the motor back up. Milkshake again, but this time the car wasn’t running long enough to be an intake leak. Took out the coolant temp sensor and pressurized the block with my compressor and found out the block wasn’t air tight. Called Gunn and they said they didn’t pressure test blocks because they didn’t have the equipment. Pulled the motor and completely disassembled it. Found that the “pin hole” was about the size of a pencil eraser and the “fix” was some “Moroso Ceramic Engine Seal” on the inside of the block. If you aren’t familiar, this is not the application for that product. As soon as the coolant got hot, the seal all melted out and the water pump was dumping coolant directly into the oil pan. Called Gunn to tell them they needed to fix it. Their solution, and the third red flag, was to use the same product, just more of it. They were also “too busy” to get to the block for 2 weeks. I left the block there and started going through the online reviews of Gunn online. There was one review about a customer having his cylinder head held hostage until he paid the shop. From my interactions with Gunn at this point, I realized they were treating me like a regular customer again and I wasn’t going to give them another cent. So, I picked the block up the next morning and took it to another guy to fix it. Upon hearing my story and looking at the block, the new machinist had 2 things to say; that he had built hundreds of 383’s and never cut into a water jacket and utter shock at the customer service at Gunn. Gunn took absolutely no responsibility and burnt about 100hrs of my time. They also didn’t try to make things right at all. I’m out 3 sets of intake gaskets, 2 sets of head gaskets, 2 rear main seals, 2 oil pan gaskets, 8 gallons of coolant, 2 oil filters, and 14 quarts of oil. That’s right around $600 bucks of consumables I had to eat. I would strongly recommend finding a different machine shop unless you would like to gamble with your money and engine parts. I will never take them anything again and have already steered multiple individuals into using a different shop. Id give them less than one star if google would allow it.

Screw the ppl giving GUNN AUTO a 1 star and bad review!! No need to search for another machine shop, Five stars hands down! They cleaned my B18c cylinder head and We own a shop down the street from GUNN AUTO and send them A LOT of work. Always pleased with the work and price!!!They are pretty backed up and take a few weeks but that would be my only complaint. Obviously that is a great problem for them to have since everyone and their grandma use GUNN AUTO!!!Keep up the awesome work guys!KyleWestern Material Handling
