Dr. Paymaun and the staff are very kind and accommodating people. They make sure you have an excellent experience by explaining all steps of the exam and asking good questions. They also have a very cool eye imaging machine!

So I was on my last pair of contacts and happened to lose the one in my left eye. So I called here to see if I could purchase a trial pair with my current prescription and they were all for it. I show up and they kindly give it to me at no charge. Must be an awesome place to work and be a patient. Saving the the afternoon and night 👍

This was my second visit to Helmus Optometry. I had such a wonderful experience my first visit..however, this time was a very different story. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable! The wonderful office manager, Majid was a joy to work with. I was told Majid has been in the optical field since he was 10! He went above and beyond to make sure I was leaving the office happy! Unfortunately, As for the optometrist I was seen by, this was a different experience. I felt very rushed, and neglected. She made me feel like a burden to be there. Dr. Helmus made me feel very unwelcome. I asked to be seen by Dr. Marks (who has now retired) daughter hoping that I would receive the same great experience as he has previously given me. I am sad to say this was not the case. I will not be coming back to Helmus Optometry. The front desk staff were all lovely, I wish I could say the same about the doctor.

Since my ophthalmologist in San Francisco has retired, I was encouraged to stay local.I was very impressed by the office operations and wonderful staff.Dr. Julie has taken over her parents original operation and brings her energy and professionalism to create a fresh new practice. Everyone followed good health and safety protocols, wiping down all their modern equipment, and even eyeglass samples I had handled during my selection of eyeglasses. This is an A+ operation!

Helmus Optometry is a welcoming, friendly place even in the middle of our pandemic. The staff are very safe with hand washing, shields, masks and distance. They have a great text message system for coordinating visits so we can all stay safe.They have a well organized and great selection of glasses including high quality frames for professionals. I had the same experience as Dennis Miras (another reviewer). The doctor that took care of me acted impatient and annoyed with me, which I was super thrown off by. At one point she rolled her eyes at me when I asked to see if I could try out a different brand of contacts. It felt like she didnt care about the best care/service for me and just wanted me out, which again was super off putting. I remember just staring in disbelief at the attitude she gave me. The day I visited, I was also told I had to get my eyes dilated (which I was never told in advance) and that usually folks who get this service should not drive (but again, I had not been given an advance notice and had already driven there - I had to drive back home with horrible, horrible vision which was so dangerous). To top it all off, at the end of my service, I was overcharged and I pointed it out to the staff but all they did was reduce my charge and tell me that my insurance didnt cover it (although I later confirmed with my insurance that it did - but didnt fight it because didnt find it was worth the energy). I immediately knew I wouldnt be returning after this experience.It was a poor experience and I expected better given how good the reviews are online. I recently went to a different Optometry in Davis and WOW - the experience was so wonderful! It made me realize how not OK my experience here was.

There was a huge selection. He filled out all the paperwork and explained the different lenses.Both were very personable. I wear contacts and recently thought I inverted one and I was unable to retrieve it.It was 1:45 in the afternoon I called Helmus optometry and told them my dilemma. They told me they only do visits by appointment during this pandemic BUT we can see you at 2:15. I was able to make that appointment as I only live 20 minutes away.They took such care in checking to see if my contact was still in my eye. And it wasnt it must have fallen out as I frantically was trying to retrieve it. I made my eye sore and red. And recommended that I use eye wetting drops during the day and lubricant gel tears at night and dont wear contacts for a few days. I literally cant see without them but thank God I have glasses as backup. Ive been going to Helmus optometry for over 35+ years and they have the updated technology.Thank you for the care you have given me all these years!

At my first visit at Helmus Optometry, the doctor prescribed a 0.75 power increase in my prescription (a much larger jump than Ive ever previously had at yearly appointments at other clinics) which gave me headaches and unclear vision. I gave my eyes about a month to adjust to the new prescription, but nothing improved. I did not wish to return to the clinic, and wore my old glasses while I waited for my next insurance-covered optometry visit at a different clinic. There, they told me that the power prescribed by Helmus Optometry was 0.5 too strong. Ive had no problems (and better vision) with this new prescription, and regret my visit to Helmus Optometry.The employees at Helmus Optometry were not especially friendly and seemed annoyed when I asked questions. I also had to follow up multiple times to receive a digital copy of their records of the appointment.

I’m loving Helmus Optometry less than I used to. It’s subtle, but while it used to feel like a place where people loved their work and work situation, it feels like a place where staff worry about their future. I’m looking for a new optometrist.

My Husband and I live in the Bay Area but come to Davis just for Helmus Optometry every year for the last 4 years. Dr. Julie has always been incredibly flexible and accommodating with scheduling our eye exams.Today my exam was with Dr. Paymaun, who was very kind and thorough.Weve purchased several frames from them and every time the Opticians are patient and helpful.

Lovely staff and very informative and knowledgeable doctors!I would have given them five stars if they were punctual. I arrived 10 minutes before the appointment to do my pretests as advised, but then I had to wait half an hour past my appointment time to actually see the doctor. I hope my case was an exception and not the rule.Besides that they are great overall, and I cant fault them anywhere else. I would visit them again and would recommend them to anyone.

I am a lifelong contact lens wearer (my prescription is so bad I absolutely hate glasses) and seem genetically inclined to eye issues. Ive been very happy coming here.Dr. Julie Helmus is smart and every visit she talks to me about my eye health, what I should be doing, watching out for, etc. Every other place I go to just gives me a prescription and Im out the door.Plus they adjusted three pairs of my glasses perfectly!

As I get older, I sadly have to come to grips with my degrading vision - something I assume we all, or most of us, experience. And, as I get older, I find that I have stronger opinions about how good service should be given. When I recently visited Helmus Optometry to have a yearly vision exam, I was not only surprised by how much my vision had changed, but also how well I was treated during the examination process. I was impressed with the state-of-the-art technology being used (quite an investment), and also the good old-fashioned personal touch. The staff were all very kind and friendly, and Dr. Helmus had an infectious positive nature that made the entire experience quite pleasant. It is clear to me that the folks at Helmus have an ability to connect with their patients - both young and old - and, I can say with confidence that I can now see more clearly than I thought possible. I highly recommend Helmus Optometry.

My experience here was always pretty good until last year when Dr. Joann Helmus badgered me for wearing my contacts too long in a standard work day. No one has ever told me that was not okay, but to out of no where scold me for this like I was a child was not only uncomfortable but frustrating. Never has an Optometrist shamed me like this. I will not return.**Edit,**: I spoke with the office to clarify, and it was Dr. Julie Helmus (Not Joann Helmus) in 2017 that I was ridiculed by for wearing my contacts ~10 hours a day. I have seen 5 different optometrists in my life, and such a statement has never been made to me. If new research is found showing that wearing contacts 10 hours a day is damaging, I am open to that, but not when the information is delivered to me condescendingly.

Everyone was so nice and accommodating. Dr.Helmus was very sweet and took the time to really talk to me like a person and not just another dollar sign. They also had a nice selection of glasses in many different styles and price ranges. Most insurance policies are covered here as well. Definitely a plus!Theyll always have my business!

All you get here is high quality, professional and courteous service. This is such a departure from the assembly line approach in other offices and in health care in general that Helmus and Baker deserve special mention. Everyone, ancillary staff and providers alike, are genuinely interested in providing the highest level of service and responsiveness to your needs. The process is seamless....email reminder of next appointment, make appointment on-line, update information on-line, and even get a text to remind/confirm upcoming appointment. This is the way everything should be but seldom is. I cant imagine going anywhere else.

Dr. Baker was great! He took me in for walk-in visit and gave me full diagnosis. We have a great conversation and my problem was all taken care of with half an hour. Luckily there was no copay for EyeMed insurance. Thanks to Dr. Baker I can drive home safely without an irritating eye issue.

Dr. Mark and Dr. Joanne Helmus have been my familys optometrists since 1997. Im happy to recommend them to anyone needing eye exams, contact lenses and/or eyeglass frames or lenses. Their staff is excellent, including making appointments, handling drop-ins for a quick repair, explaining ones insurance/VSP benefits, and helping select frames and lenses. The office always seems to have the latest materials for lenses and coatings. Orders arrive quickly. The doctors are very professional yet friendly. They listen! I always feel like a valued client when I go there.

My family moved to the Davis area one year ago, so I just completed my second annual eye exam with Dr. Helmus. The things I think are important in an optometry office are 1) easy to get an appointment 2) a friendly, welcoming staff 3) respectful doctor who doesnt rush through your exam and gets to know you 4) contacts that are in stock. This place has it all! They even offered to fix my sunglasses which I didnt purchase at their store.

Always happy with the courteous, kind, and professional approach at this office. The front desk runs efficiently and it has been easy for me to get refills on contacts or order a pair of glasses when convenient for my schedule. Dr. Mark has fit me in same day on two occasions when my severe eye allergies suddenly kicked in, and provided great care to get the allergies under control. I was also impressed with how quickly glasses were delivered and that when my favorite frame was backordered, the office offered to temporarily put my lenses in the sample pair so I could have something to wear in the meanwhile. Ive been a patient for 7 years, best local optometrists in my opinion.

Updating my review since seeing Dr. Julie Helmus. As always, a very positive experience. Making an appointment was super easy. Dr. Julie listened to my concerns and answered all questions thoroughly. Lots of great frames to choose from (almost too many for an indecisive person like me!), and the optometrists were super helpful in my final selection. They explained what would and would not work based on my lens needs (thick) and face shape (also thick, so some frames wont sit as comfortably). The staff also helped with looking at other available frame colors and shapes online. I love my new glasses and am seeing beautifully!

I have been seeing Dr. Mark Helmus for the past 20 years. He has always been friendly and professional. He makes time to answer my questions and explains the finding of my eye examination. I would recommend everybody to him. I first started seeing him when I went to UC Davis. I have seen moved to Sacramento, and I still make the drive to see him. Its hard to find a doctor that you trust. I highly recommend him.

I am not calling to question the abilities of the doctors at this office, but I will not be a return customer. The lady Helmus was my doctor and boy was she mean to me. She lectured me for not wearing my contacts everyday, she said harsh words about my handwriting, and she got angry with me when I was having a hard time reading the chart during my exam.I left the office feeling as if I had been a bad kid and I had just left the principals office. That is no way to feel after an eye exam!Sure, the office is fancy, but I would rather be treated nicely than have something pretty to look at.
