I grew up near this area and always loved going to Rakestraw books as a kid. Now, Im a teacher in the Sacramento area at a Title I school. Susan, who works with Rakestraw, reached out to me with an offer to donate books to my high school English classroom. I was so thrilled! She worked with me to get specific titles I asked for and threw in recommendations of hers as well that I know my students will love. I am so grateful to know that Rakestraw is still such a wonderful pillar in the Danville community. I plan on ordering as many books as I can from Rakestraw for my personal library and for my classroom library in the future!

I’ve been coming here for twenty years and so has my family and friends. Michael, the Owner is a wonderful person. Love him and love his store. You can call and make requests for books if they aren’t in stock and Michael will find them for you. The atmosphere is welcoming and he always has interesting authors in (virtual for now) who talk about their books.

I hate to slam an indie bookstore but I have to give an honest review... I went in looking for 4-5 commonly-available books and they had none available. The associate I was speaking with was very helpful, but it was made awkward by the owner having a very intense argument over the phone (!).

Rakestraw Books is the only retail bookstore in Downtown Danville. It is a wonderful gem for book lovers. Has a nice selection of books, including local Bay Area authors and East Bay authors in particular, and gifts for sale in a cozy, comfortable setting.Rakestraw Books has wonderful, free literary events / book readings and signings for the community for both adults and kids.Kid Friendly: On Thursday & Saturday morning, they have Storytime for 2 - 4 year olds, which includes a craft activity at times. On special Storytime events, you need to call to RSVP to save a spot. On one Saturday, Rakestraw Books had a Madeline Storytime, in which Madeline came out at the end to greet and take photos with her. The under 5 year crowd was stunned and speechless when she walked in.There is a Kids and Teens areas at the back of the store with kid size chairs to sit and books and things for sale at preschooler’s eye level (watch out - lol).Rakestraw Books is located right next to Starbucks and across from Trader Joe’s on Railroad Road, which is next to San Ramon Valley High School. Find a parking space can be tough in the free parking lot depending on the time of day.

I love Rakestraw! Michael does an incredible job learning his customers names and making recommendations. Hi enthusiasm for books is contagious--he adores reading brief passages to customers to give them a feel for a book and can even quote passages from memory. Rakestraw is one of the things that keeps me in Danville. I would never want to live in a community that did not have an independent bookstore and I cant imagine a better one than Rakestraw! Any book they dont have on the shelf they can order and have it in the store often by the next day. Who needs Amazon? Support this bookstore!
