Called Kenny this morning to get a quote for installation of a Thermal R&D catback exhaust I already had onto my Ford Fiesta ST. Unlike any of the other 6 places I called, he couldnt give me a number over the phone, said I had to bring the car in so he could take a look. Red flag #1. Was also super short on the phone and hung up on me after saying I had to bring it in. Red flag #2. About an hour later, I head over to get a quote, I unload the exhaust from my car, he greets me (no face covering of any sort btw, red flag #3) moves it onto his pit, goes underneath for about 2 mins and says he can do it for $200. I tell him that Cypress Muffler, 1 block away, gave me a quote that morning for $120 (which is true, Kennys $200 was far and away the most expensive quote I received of all the places I called). He thinks for a min, says if I can do cash, he can match. I go next door to the liquor store and get cash while he gets to work. I come back, he asks me if the exhaust is even for this car (fair enough I think, since its a full 3 catback on a small 4 door hatchback).Hes under the car for a little over an hour, at one point tells me Whoever made this exhaust did not try it on this car, it doesnt fit. This system has been around for years for the Fiesta, is almost universally the best in terms of quality, fit and finish across the board, but Kenny decides its not for this car. He gets done, almost literally tosses my old exhaust system onto the concrete outside his pit, and moves the car off the pit. I point out that the tips of the exhaust are not level. And by not level I mean like 20 degree angle not level. He takes a look, huffs to himself, gets back in the car, loosens the tips and readjusts them to straight. He then starts torquing down another clamp, my exhaust tips banging against my rear valance (luckily no paint damage), then breaks the bolt on it and tells me broke the f***ing clamp, sh***y a** system. In fairness to him, he was able to find a bolt and nut set that worked with the clamp, and as far as I can tell after checking his professional work with a friend later today, its clamped properly. Then he moves my car off the ramp, I collect the old exhaust, pay him his $120 (couldnt be bothered to spend more time there and try and save myself a couple 20s), and leave. The best part, and I am so glad it happened, was another possible customer came up with his beautiful 71 Vette Stingray and asked Kenny for a quote on a new muffler. Kenny says Give me a minute, then proceeds to make the guy wait for about 30 mins while he finishes the install of my exhaust. Luckily for the customer, he saw the whole fiasco with my system, and after Kenny breaks the bolt on the clamp, the would-have-been customer looks at me, I shake my head no, he nods, gets in his car and drives away. The $20 or $40 I may have saved trying to pay less for the service was nothing, compared to the knowledge that I spared someone else from having to go through a similar situation that I did. $120 is a cheap price for an install based on my research, and in the words of Kenny himself when talking about my cheap exhaust, You get what you pay for.
