Phil put in a pick up in my Martin and it sounds great and has been working great for over a year now! He was very informative. I will definitely be back for any of my guitar needs. Strongly recommend!!
The guitar tech, Shawn, is what makes this place go. He works hard and can be obsessive about making my instruments as perfect as possible. He is friendly, informed and engaged. He understands that his customers are connected to their instruments and he treats their instruments accordingly. In the world of guitar repair where much remains a mystery to most customers, Shawn is consistently honest, transparent and friendly. Some day I imagine he will have his own shop. He certainly has the skill set as a guitar tech and the friendliness to maintain a loyal customer base.
I would strongly suggest to search elsewhere when considering this shop for maintenance/guitar work. I dropped off a high dollar guitar in pristine condition which I had just purchased. It was returned with multiple blemishes, scratches and chips in the finish. Not to mention, the actual work on the guitar was sub par. When I picked up my guitar the tech did not say a word about his lack of handling while charging nearly $400 for a setup, pick ups swapped, restring etc. Please do yourself a favor and find another shop that is capable of performing professional work on your instrument.
If you need your guitar setup to major repairs THIS IS THE BEST PLACE TO GO! Experienced helpful staff that know their stuff. Small amount of quality guitars for sale at fair prices. Been in business for a long time for a good reason.
Fantastic. I was quoted $185 for a fret level and dressing and $90 to do a nut. VERY high prices, but it motivated me to buy all of the tools needed to do the work myself. Its not rocket science. I got all the tools and a nut for 1/4 what their fees were
Phil is great. Can sometimes be a little pricey but you pay for what u get! I would rather pay more and get the job done right that have to take it somewhere else and then have to pay more for them to fix it.Same thing I had to do with my bass. Took it previously to Little German Village Shop and they did some work on my custom bass at a great price but jacked it up. Lucky Phil came to the rescue and fixed it back!
I have got to say that theses guys are the greatest! Not only did they do an amazing on my beloved but super cheap Metallic Orange Squire Strat, but also gave me incredible advice on what to do or not do involving upgrading my guitar. They also gave me a thorough evaluation of the guitar, and was please to find that I had a surprisingly good guitar. This guitar sings like I never thought it could.More importantly they took their time with a clear novice, treated me with respect, explained everything fully, and acted as if Id been a customer for years. They have a customer for life, and I would not trust anyone else with my gear.
Very, very knowledgeable and experienced staff. I was more than pleased when I got my 1973, 4001 Rickerbacker Bass back from being repaired. Highly recommended!
If you care about your guitar you will take it to 5th Avenue Fret Shop.. Very informative and to the point. The work is always top notch and the techs are always friendly. If you are worried about the price then take your toy elsewhere.. This place is for guitars.
Excellent vibes. VERY professional. Wonderful work and care. VERY knoweledgable guys. Theyre passionate about what they do and they have so much wonderful knowledge to share.
My experience with this shop has been a mixed bag I had the headstock on my acoustic guitar snapped off 2x by my kids the 1st repair was fine however the second the finish they put on the neck after the repair began to get sticky and gummed up after a few months to the point my hand would stick to the guitar I took it back and just had them strip it back to the original finish which was silky smooth. I took a used strat to have it professionally setup because playing chords in the 1st positions sounded terrible but even after there was no noticeable difference in the sound so it was basically wasted money. Im not sure what they did but it seemed like nothing. I like to give my money to local businesses but I m not sure Ill be going back
The owner doesnt just sell you things, but helps you make informed decision.
Great personalized work every time. Super friendly, quick and quality work. Don’t take my guitars anywhere else.
Phil and Sean are some of the most knowledgable guys Ive met, and they are the guys I would trust with any repairs or restorations. Great shop environment too.
They recently did a set up on my Jazz bass, including filing string notches in the Leo Quann bridge I had installed on it a few years ago. They set the action perfectly and made sure the strings are positioned right over the pickup pole pieces. Excellent work, prompt service, and helpful answers to my questions. Thank you guys, your dedication shows!
Picking up my guitar I saw the neck was not correct... the owner screamed at me, fixed it and scratched the finish and threw the guitar at me and yelled profanities. This is a horrible shop. This guy has anger issues. Sad. Guitars should make you happy. The other workers just looked at the floor like they had seen this before...
100% pleased with the work that Phil did on my Les Paul Standard.
Great shop. Knowledgeable, and personal staff. Did a stellar job installing some custom electronics in my Martin acoustic.
I took a perfectly good instrument to 5th Ave Fretshop for a minor change to the electronics and a setup and I got back the same instrument but so greatly improved that I must explain...I liked the sound of the pickups but wanted to tweak it for a warmer jazzier sound. They recommended a change to a capacitor in the electronics. While it was in there, they build a new nut (I hadnt noticed the damage to the one I had) and did a setup. My playing is all improvised. But like most folks, I tend to rely on certain habits and riffs that make my solos sound less spontaneous (to me). The new setup and sound, have actually made me a better player! I cant even believe the immediate improvement to the solo ideas Im having and the fun Im having just hearing what comes out of my amp. How can a trip to the Fret Shop add years to my abilities? I dont know. But, I like it!Five Stars for the guys at 5th Ave Fret Shop.
These guys are the best, the do professional work on professional grade instruments, not the place to go if you are a beginner or have low and mid grade instruments. If you have high end gear and want high end work go to these guys.
Im a player for 30+ years, worked in the retail music industry and did basic guitar repair myself. I like to tinker and loved working on guitars...my favorite job to this day followed closely as a Indy car mechanic...its been a long strange trip! And it continues, may wind up in Tibet before all is said and done. Lol...anyway...First experience: Dropped off a Gibson custom shop es335 for some loose pots and a professional set-up. Im lazy now...Got back a COMPLETELY different guitar...its was a killer to begin with but after Shawn finished with it, it has become the BEST playing guitar Ive ever owned, and after tweaking the pickups etc...its sounds PERFECT!All the years of playing and working on guitars I had NO IDEA what aREAL HONEST luthier/pro can do with a guitar. Im AMAZED at how much better the guitar is, and as I said it was my favorite guitar to begin with!Next up was a vintage 57 J-45.It needed a new pick guard and set up.Once again I could not be happier.Plays and sounds fantastic now.Lastly I took a vintage 62 es330 in for serious and comprehensive work.Needed a total fret job, planing, electrical clean up, a hole filled and repaired, new nut, and bridge.Phil did it in less time than expected and quoted and I simply cannot put into words how Fu^}~£¥ing unbelievablySupercalifragalisticly awsome this guitar...and Phils work is.Flawless.Wont be screwing up any more guitars by pretending I know ANYTHING about them anymore...just going to hand them over to 5th ave. Thanks Fellas!!!
These guys know their guitars (I mean even Clapton buys there). When I found that out that was all I needed to know. These guys are REAL guitar experts. Do yourself a favor and try them out. The people are knowledgeable, over-deliver and you will not get a better deal for the money anywhere else (even in the tri-state area). If you wont take my advice maybe Eric C can help you with your decision. -Stu Johnson - Owner - Second Floor Studios - Grandview Heights
I suppose if you have a ton of money to blow on a repair, this would be a good place for you as long as you agree with the owner. Took a 1963 Gretsch Double Anniversary there and the quote was insane, when I asked why it was so much he told me it was because he would have to track down the original paint color for the guitar. I told him that I just wanted to be able to play it and that I wasnt concerned with things like that and then he advised that he doesnt do anything but complete restorations. He then told me that I should just save my time and buy a reissue. One of those old school guys who would tell you stuff like Oh, this guitar will never been properly intonated so whats the point. Hmmm...Someone doesnt listen to blues, apparently. Do recommend for snobby people who throw thousands into a guitar destined to hang on a wall.
Helfpul advice and service when my wifes guitar was having issues.
My collection of Soloists and Strats could make a grown man weep....They go here and nowhere else...Take your Schecters & ESPs to guitar center for the children to experiment with if youd like. This shop is where the big boys take their prized axes. First time I brought a guitar here, Sean said you will never play a guitar so sweet when Im done with it...That was an understatement! His set ups alone instantly improved my technique/tone..Keep up the great work bud!!- Harley
Small shop. Pro service. Cool vibe.l
Owner is arrogant !!I stopped in with a 1980 Alvarez Acoustic several years ago that I was using to play out with an acoustic band. At the time I was using a snap in Seymour Duncan pickup - been working ok.I wanted to install an acoustic pickup system in this guitar.I purchased this Guitar new in 1980 for around $550. To me this was one of my babys. The owner said I should purchase a GOOD acoustic guitar and go from there. Not to waste my money on my cheap guitar. Yeah Made me feel welcome at his store.Uhhh......have not been backI took it to Bill at German Village Music and he did the work - set the guitar up with a good Fishman pickup. Sounds freaking awesome !Bill works on all my guitars from cheap Strats to a nice Gibson es 335 and he is cheaper than the troll at 5th Ave.
Good experience. Brought in an (Ebay) Showmaster for a set-up a couple years ago. After looking at the custom Teles on the wall I felt a little embarrassed but the counter guy was great. Felt like I been a customer for years. I hear Sean works here now. He restored a 62 SG for me while at another shop. Beautiful work.
Rude guy so I took my money elsewhere. He has an old school Im doing you a favor vibe.
Phils work is excellent
