I love this shop. They are so welcoming! They greet you right away when you come in so you dont feel like youre walking into a clique of knitters that arent interested in you. And the help I have received there has been fantastic. In particular, I went in wanting to replicate a friends sweater. Jamie helped me CREATE my own pattern for it. And stood patiently at the end while I modeled it so we could decide how high the neck should go and where the armholes should fall. She is so willing to share her obvious expertise. The sweater turned out fantastic. She even blocked it for me, as well as another afghan I made. Another time I brought in tons of yarn from my stash and they helped me figure out how to use it all in one afghan. Both Jamie and Donna are very creative and have a great sense of design and color that I trust implicitly. This is what a knit shop should be!

I started coming to their Thursday knit nights when I first moved to the city and was immediately welcomed into their community. I am extremely grateful for this wonderful group of people who were my first friends in Chicago and continue to be excellent support. Donna is extremely kind, helpful and knowledgeable. The store has a great mix of affordable and splurge-worthy yarns. I love most of the yarn shops in Chicago, but Sister-Arts is definitely my number one.

I love Sister Arts! It is everything you would want in a yarn shop: a variety of yarn from the classics to luxuries, quality accessories/tools, the best needles/hooks, latest books and magazines, and beautiful bags. It seems like there is always a fantastic trunk show or something new to play with. The classes are wide-ranging. I have taken two classes, one with Donna (crocheted handbag) and the other with Park (brioche cowl). Both are attentive, encouraging and patient teachers.Everyone on the staff is welcoming and helpful; they have built an amazing community here that makes it more than just a yarn shop. I could go on and on about the diverse and wonderful group of people who call Sister Arts their crafty home but you really need to experience it firsthand on Thursday nights. Prepare yourself to be greeted not just by the staff but by everyone sitting around the table!

Last year, I was taking a leisurely walk through Lincoln Park with my friend and happened to see some amazing knitwear showcased on the windows. I went inside where I was greeted by Donna, the owner. I told her about my textile interest and background which, at that point, made me ask her if they offer classes. She said they do and showed me the extensive list of classes that are taught there. I absolutely love the fact that I learned to knit and crochet with some excellent teachers (Donna, Jami and Park).Oh! -- Most importantly, they always carry the most beautiful yarn, have all of the knitting supplies/needles/hooks that your heart may desire and I always feel such a warm and comforting energy whenever I walk into that shop! Believe it or not, but Ive been knitting for over a year now and have not even ventured into any other yarn shop.

As a newcomer to Chicago I had been looking for a new local yarn store. After trying a couple of other neighborhood shops I was so happy to find this store. It’s warm, inviting with a great selection of yarn. They are always extremely helpful and low-pressure, when sometimes you just need to browse. Even though it’s not the closest LYS to where I live, it has become my go-to favorite.

I happened into this lovely store on a Thursday night. Not only did they help me pick out the perfect color yarn for my weird project, they welcomed me to their knitting circle with open arms. Places like this are a jewel to the community. I’m from Michigan, but I felt at home in this gorgeous shop. The yarn is deliciously dreamy, the shop is exquisite, and the ladies that work and shop here are exceptional. Truly a wonderful experience.

I hate to give this place 3 stars because I live nearby and its very convenient for me but I have to share my experience and explain why I would rather hop on a train and go out of my way to a different store. First, I will say the owner is VERY nice, always helpful and knowledgeable! There is another employee who seems to be in her late 20s, early 30s who is also SO nice and has helped me on multiple occasions! The reason for less than 5 stars is that sometimes when you come in, you feel like youre interrupting knitting time in the back. Its kind of uncomfortable when youre not greeted and just wandering around the shop waiting for someone to acknowledge you. I know that shops frequently host knit nights and such and totally understand (and celebrate!) these kinds of things - however; I think its still important to acknowledge your drop in customers if you are open for regular business. Finally, there is another employee (I apologize for not being familiar with their names) who seems to be in her 50s perhaps who has helped me on a couple of occasions. She is a prolific knitter and, from my understanding, designs beautiful patterns and lace work. My trouble is that when I, as a beginner, have gone in for help, she has struggled to see things from a beginner perspective. Ive gone in with questions about my knitting and she advises me. One specific example she was helping me with is a scarf that the pattern advised you to hold double - she had me get smaller needles and hold the yarn single saying it would achieve the same result. It definitely did not work. I realized about 1/2 through that it was off (even after testing gauge) and brought it in. She basically just defended her original position and said it would work. I still felt like it wouldnt work so I hopped on the train to a different yarn shop. They confirmed, it was too small and I needed to rip it out. I then bought the supplies the project called for and had success. I just wish I would have been advised properly the first time. I think her skill is not in question; however, not everyone youre talking to is a prolific knitter and when you are advising people on patterns its best to try to take their skill level in to account. Ive had to rip out and restart three projects after receiving advise from this employee. Again, Im sure there is nothing wrong at all with her knitting expertise (and it is admittedly far beyond my own) but I think its important to consider the customer and what theyre asking. To conclude my novel review, I would recommend this shop for yarn, needles and patterns as they have a wonderful selection of all three! I just cannot, in good conscious, recommend coming here with questions or looking for advice - or at least do so with caution!

I visited this shop on LYS Saturday. The owner is very knowledgeable, helpful and nice. There are numerous yarn choices, along with Indie dyed yarns. The shop is fun to browse and the staff encourages touching and feeling the yarn. I also like they have great knitting gadgets, which I included in my overall yarn purchase. I drove from the western suburbs with my girlfriend; this shop is well worth the trip into Lincoln Park. Finding parking can be an issue. I felt pricing was consistent with other shops. These ladies stayed open late for us, they really make you feel comfortable. This place is hard to resist, it feeds your yarn obsession. I will definitely make the drive to go again.

So many choices! Im visiting from California and popped in here just because. There are so many colors, fibers, and choices. The staff made me feel very welcome and in conversation invited me to join the open knit night. The store had so many finished projects for inspiration. The pattern for one of the crocheted projects near the front of the store was from the summer time yarn crawl. I bought that pattern, a magazine and two Shubui hanks. The store is also dog friendly which is wonderful!

I visited this store a few months ago during my vacation to Chicago. I visited many yarn stores in the city and this one was by far the most enjoyable for many reasons. I showed up 40 min to close and the owner was very helpful and kind. Store has a lot of selection and samples were helpful. My only piece of advice to the nice people working at the shop is to give people their space. I felt at times pressured into purchasing more than I wanted too. That may have more to do with my own lack of confidence in saying no thank you, but nonetheless its how I felt during my visit. Walked out with beautiful yarn and fond memories.Id certainly return to the shop and highly reccomend it to others in the city. Best wishes. Max

I love this shop - its my favorite out of all of Chicagos yarn store options (which is quite a few). The owner is always willing to help and gives a warm welcome every time I go there. The weekly knit group is very friendly and there are always good snacks and conversations, plus help if you need it on a project. I wish I knew about this place when I was a little kid because there are loads of kits to choose from plus classes for all ages, too! Great store.

This place is like a museum of yarn! I took my 80-yr-old mom here who has been knitting her whole life but had never been in a proper yarn shop before. I think it made her head spin a bit! There is an incredibly helpful proprietor who is really an educator in every sense. Will be headed back soon.

I bought yarn from shop to knit a scarf and I went home and found leftover yarn I had so I no longer needed this product. I went back to return it. When trying to return it, they told me that they wouldn’t accept it because they ‘bundled it’ for it. I didn’t ask for this, they offered and they also didn’t let me know that I wouldn’t be able to return it if they bundled it up for me. If I was told that was the case, I would have never agreed to it. I was treated incredible unfairly by this shop and when I kept explaining that I didn’t need this yarn anymore one employee said to me ‘do you not have room on your shelves to store this yarn?’. That’s incredibly rude and not the point - very poor customer service, and I would absolutely recommend you buy your products elsewhere.Edit to the owners comments below: Why did you not apologize to me in the store, then? You asked if I didn’t have enough room in my apartment to store the yarn. Also, there was absolutely no sign on the register nor on my receipt, can you prove that you’re not lying?

I walked into this shop and found yarn heaven. I had decided to crochet a blanket but had 2 problems....I couldnt find enough different colors of the same yarn (I didnt want to purchase online) and I hadnt crochetted for 15 years. Donna helped me change the pattern and choose the best washable yarn and Jamie has sat with me for 2 days teaching me everything I forgot or never knew. It has been so peaceful to just sit in this shop crochetting as customers come in and out and visit while shopping. I look forward to many more visits and projects. Thank you ladies!
