Staff was mediocrely nice- I got the vibe they had to be there but didn’t want to be. Brisket biscuits and gravy definitely left something to be desired. It was unfortunately very bland and I definitely expected more for the price (portion size was great, expected better flavor). I decided to try their sugar cookies too and they were also bland and dry. Overall the food was disappointing especially for what I paid but I gave them a 2nd star because I appreciated being offered something that wasn’t the classic sausage biscuits and gravy.

Love the food, Im glad they are doing well through the pandemic. I tried bringing my dog over the summer on the patio. I was told no dogs on the patio they have to be on the outside perimeter without shade. This may be a better sell for people who like patios sans dogs. Just FYI, dont bring your pup. Foods pretty great, and expect a bit of a wait on weekends.

We love this place. The food is excellent. We got the hash with wheat toast and biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs on top. The biscuits are the best I have had in Chicago. The pulled pork gravy is absolutely amazing. The staff are very friendly. They were apologizing to us when we accidentally spilled our coffee cream. Completely our fault and thank you for being so helpful in cleaning it up. The free cupcake for checking in on yelp was also amazing. The seating is community so you can be potentially set next to louder people. But everyone was very friendly. Definitely recommend if in Southport.

Overall: Delicious, charming, and charming, brunch doesnt get much better! The good: Superb tasting food, the quiche was fantastic and the coffee cake was well done. The variety of the menu puts a fun twist on brunch. Im sure the non-breakfast options are great. Charming atmosphere and also tons of to-go bakery items and bakery spices and goods. The bad: Small space, especially if the outside is closed. Tight squeezes. Service can be hindered due to that. Menu, while great, good of had a few more options. Long waitAtmosphere: 8/10Service: 8/10Food: 10/10

Super good food, and fast service to boot! We were seated right away outside on a Sunday morning (I was expecting a wait) and even my picky brother was wowed by his hash with brisket. The prices are too high. We waiting forever (45 minutes total) from the time we sat down to when we recieved our food. We had to ask where our food was. We got the Southern split and the $33 and some change. I understand that restaurants are in difficult times with Covid but this was not good. We will not be back.

Love to try different breakfast spots, and I must say hands down the service was great and the food was wonderful. Their take on hash is one of a kind the potatoes and veggies were julianed and made it easy to get everything in one bite. And those Pancakes, the Bread pudding solo and Cupcake solo was a great idea in order to taste both. No wait, laid back and you can grab a few needed items for the house as you check out.

Second trip to Southport Grocery and Cafe. Excellent both times. First time I had the Brisket Hash, second time I tried the Brisket and Gravy dish. Their ingredients taste extremely fresh - eggs were cooked to perfection, brisket was tender and flavorful, it was also proportioned well throughout (not too little meat), the gravy was thick, and they have some tasty hot sauce to add some spice here and there. They also serve delicious coffee. Love this place.

We wanted something more substantial than just pastries and coffee after flying into Chicago and came across this Cafe. The latte and house made strawberry rhubarb soda were an excellent start to a lovely meal. We decided to get a bit of both breakfast and lunch and nothing disappointed. The savory pull apart muffin (tomato jelly, herbs and cheese) was spectacular and I was lucky enough to snag the last one! My husband opted for a more traditional breakfast with a twist; eggs, bacon and grilled coffee cake with cream cheese (sounds odd, but it was amazing) and I decided on the peach caprese salad. The salad was huge and came with a peach vinaigrette that complemented the fresh produce, sunflower seeds and ricotta cheese perfectly. Everything was wonderful, the staff were helpful friendly and prompt and sitting on the patio added to the charm of this little cafe. Definitely check it out if youre in the area!

The two words that came to mind as I was walked to my table by the person who seated me was quaint and quiet. There were just a few tables available because of Covid restrictions. Menus are available as a QR code scanned by smartphone. Water is provided in a green wine-bottle to be poured into what appeared to be a small mason jar for drinking. Its a small menu filled with very interesting variations of typical diner fare. I ordered an omelet following the servers suggestion. She proudly touted the quality of the food. I am glad to say that she was right. The omelet was fantastic. It was made with boursin cheese (goat cheese), bacon morsels and diced roasted squash. At first I was apprehensive about the squash, but it worked well and balanced the stronger flavor of the boursin. The service was friendly and welcoming. I look forward to my next visit.

We’ve just moved to Chicago during this pandemic and unpacking/settling-in is taking longer than should. It’s such a blessing to have found a corner store such as this nearby. Most nights our dinner is a charcuterie board of snacks, bits of leftovers and delightful finds from here. Their pickles and preserves are superior! We’ve grabbed brunch to go a few times and have always been overly satisfied. This spot is a staple in our book now.

I found this place during an overnight while in Chicago for a concert, and it was an awesome breakfast. We had the chorizo & eggs and the brisket & gravy. This is a good breakfast place, Ive eaten there quite a bit in the past, but there are a lot of good spots in the city to choose from. Decided to bring our dog with us to eat outside there for the first time. They must have changed their policy because they said we needed to leave her on the other side of the gate and I know Ive seen dogs there before. They said service dogs can stay, which she is, but we dont go around with her paper work. It was 830am and there was one other table. We would have been in and out in less than an hour for sure. They get one star because they have to get one on google, and the second is from my good past experience, but since they dont like super cute, obedient, furry friends, we cant be friends to them. For all the many dog lovers in the city, there are plenty of other options. Leaving little Penny on the outside of the gate is definitely not an option. We went somewhere else, and will continue to do so, even when Penny doesnt accompany us to breakfast.
