Not going to lie, the line was pretty long. But, honestly, it didn’t take long to order and receive my cone. I went with the Rainbow Cone as a skeptic because I thought the flavors sounded as if they were too contrasting. I honestly didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. Which is why I gave it 5 stars. I liked it a lot and I will most definitely be going back ! :)Plus the little ice cream catcher attachment to the cone is so smart. I wish more ice cream places did that.
This is the ORIGINAL and by far the best. yes theyve built a couple few more and thats great. those poor kids at the new locations scooping cones are still figuring out their sea legs. the original location tho is a well oiled machine. even at their busiest you arent waiting long. their ice cream is good and the whole experience is fun all around
Definitely not worth the ride! Went in today around 3:30pm and watched the young girl take change from a customer who wanted to pay for cones and didnt even bother changing her gloves. She proceeded to making my sundae. Definitely wont be going back. I really do think this place is overrated. Ill eat Costco sherbet over this next time
Wanted to try more southside favorites and was told the Rainbow Cone was a must. Glad I tried! Cone of assorted flavors and colors. Orange sherbet, green pistachio, vanilla Palmer House, and think strawberry and chocolate. Was great and would be back! Had the small size and was plenty.
I discovered this place walking home with my sister one day and Im SO glad I did! Its one of my top places to get ice cream! They always have something new to try and its delicious every time. They have the staple flavors like chocolate chip, but also have eclectic flavors. Its not pricey and its worth every bite.. Great place! I will definitely make my way here many times again.
We liked the sliced ice cream and sherbet portions, an original and colorful way to serve ice cream! Ordering is simple: Just ask for the classic rainbow cone, and specify the size (small, medium, or large). I recommend asking for it to be served in a bowl with the cone on top. Only a fast eater can consume the treat without having it melt or fall from the cone, and I for one wanted to take my time savoring the individual flavors. 😋🧁
Amazing! Always amazing! This place has been a summer staple from my childhood and never fails to please. Get the original and just take 15 minutes to enjoy it. Youll be happier and probably healthier too. Dont quote me on the second part.
My mother worked here when she was a teenager 63 years ago. Shes gone now but the rainbow cone is still an area hit. Nice people and its amazing how a neighborhood landmark has served 4 generations.
Made my order wrong. Whipped cream tastes like nothing. Ice cream tasted ... funny. Best case, they used a scoop from a different, very strong flavor of ice cream without rinsing or cleaning or whatever the protocol is. Either way, it was overwhelming. Ice cream had small bits of ice in it. Not sure if thats from production or from thawing and refreezing [poor storage]. I used to come here a lot as a kid. The ice bits are definitely nothing new. On top of that, the ice cream really didnt taste particularly good.
Been going here since I was a little girl. First time I ordered my rainbow cone minus the orange sherbet. One of my least favorite flavor, much better without it.
Came here while visiting from Canada!Very high quality ice cream. I see now why it’s a Chicago classic. Amazing taste across all 5 flavours esp the other 3 besides chocolate and vanilla. I will say though that the cake is pretty meh. Definitely lots of potential there. The breading isn’t very good and takes away from the overall taste. Definitely worth getting the rainbow cone though. I understood after why this was a must stop by place when visiting Chicago.
My auntie treated me here for my birthday. The rainbow cone was delicious. I will most definitely be back when I am in the city.
Founded by Joseph Sapp in 1926, The Original Rainbow Cone still stands at the corner of 92nd and Western, ownership currently in its third generation still holding onto Joe’s guiding principle that no one should be satisfied by a single flavor.A South Side gathering place through wars, economic collapse and the current pandemic, all staff donning PPE and sanitizer at the ready, it was at safe social distance from two elderly women that a brief wait preceded ordering, though the decision-making process was obviously simplified for a first-timer.Currently Credit Card only, packed pints and Cakes also offered along with a handful of additional flavors, it was atop a Waffle Cone that five colors were stacked using something like a trowel, the Chocolate sweeter than expected while Strawberry, Pistachio and Orange Sherbet all represented well on either side of Vanilla with Walnuts and Cherries.
Do I really need to write a review? Over two decades of patronizing is location. Rainbow provides an outstanding product, speedy service and they are open to your special requests in regards to the handpicked ice cream. Also, I love that they are now open longer into the season.
A little over priced. Seems like they got too big for their britches and think they are more valued than they should be. They need to offer more diverse sizing.
Pretty good. They have many flavors and the rainbow cone is always a great choice. I personally like the banana split. Its a big portion too!
Still the same place I went to as a kid. You know the old saying, if it aint broke dont fix it! Last time I was there I was all of 14 and not much has changed. Take a ride and enjoy this wonderful Chicago staple.
Had a hot fudge made with strawberry ice cream. It was delicious.Just Me, De8-31-2021
Always a good choice. Love the original rainbow cone and they have the best chocolate peanut butter around. The line is usually really long but worth the wait. Parking during busy hours is the only thing that prevents me from giving 5 Stars.
Omg! Absolutely delicious!! I actually dont like some of the flavors in the cone by themselves. For example, I dont like orange sherbet or strawberry ice cream, but the all those flavors together are party in my mouth. One cone and Im addicted!
What a cute little place!! The rainbow cone is such an interesting combo of flavors but it works *really* well together. Plus the shop just has really fun vibes. Great place to take kids.
I am not a Chicago native, moved here in the winter right before s global pandemic hit. so this was my first rainbow cone 😍I was so excited. I wish I could have finished it though. We have now found a few of the trucks in our suburb.
Been the spot since i was a lil scrub in the hood!! Happy see this institution still thriving.. providing great ice cream and jobs for community kids👍🏽
The classic rainbow cone! Just as, if not even more, delicious than I remember from so many years ago. Be prepared to stand in line but, well worth it. THIS is a south side institution. Rainbow has been around since America was founded!
Neighborhood favorite with outdoor seating! Plenty of parking and quick service. Very friendly and efficient staff! And of course the ice cream is bomb!! They offer delivery now! Open late, treat yourself!
I went there in the rain Camila a waffle cone with three scoops of vanilla ice cream It was worth it I’ll give you two thumbs up thank you for the ice cream
I love this ice cream parlor. Ive been going to this place since I was a little kid. Now when I come into town (Chicago) I must stop by for my ice cream. Good job for maintaining excellent ice cream.
Been coming here since I was a kid. Still good. They need to hire better help like chick FIL a.
My ice cream was not fresh. I had a rainbow cone and the flavor was strange. It reminded me of freezer burn.
Great place to cool off. Friendly staff and great ice cream.
Stopped by on our way home. My daughter says they have the best bubble gum ice cream ever! Friendly staff, clean, fair prices!
Thanks to upper management I have a different review on this business. She was very quick to respond to the situation and very helpful and understanding on which is very good work ethic, absolutely professional and very courteous in addressing the issue. When I went in last night the young lady at the register was very professional and helpful I CANT SAY THE SAME ABOUT THE OTHER WORKERS UNFORTUNATELY... When she told her coworkers my order they made a face and said wow we are going to have to work. They yung man that was doing the order just Seems bothered, also going very slow taking his time like he really didnt care. I cant say It was the best experience but it wasnt the worst like the night before.
THE BEST!! NOTHING WILL BEAT A RAINBOW CONE! AWESOME!!
Gives u so much ice cream for your money couldnt even finish it a small look like a large sugar cone was fresh and homemade try the butter pecan one of my favs cant go wrong
Accidently rated this place 1 star apparently, had someone to reach out to me asking for insight which confused me at first. Thanks for reaching out. I usually dont leave 1 star without a reason, so editing it. This for me was more 3 stars, but for sake of transparency, Im in my 40s so Im coming at this as an adult with no kids tagging along. There wasnt anything wrong with the place or the people, that was fine despite a longer than preferred line. The ice cream is cute looking. Its certainly popular, with a line out the door. Its totally fine ice cream. I think the gimmick is the real draw, not the actual flavor, as it was OK, not amazing. I dont know that Id wait in line again. However, if youre into the look of it and want to give it a shot, try to catch it on a slower day so you can pop in without too much a wait. It may be more your interest and it does make for very Instagramable pics.
Growing up, I never liked neopolitan, so whoever took that mix and then managed to figure out that adding pistachio and sherbert blended everything together is an absolute genius. Highly recommend the rainbow cone - might be my favorite place for ice cream now. If youre looking for another flavor, the mint flake is also great.
It’s so good, I love the staff!!! It’s better than the addison Dairy Queen. Where I live
My friend took me to ORC for the first time. The ice and sherbert are so freaking good. The portions are huge too!
Been going there since I was a kid. Love it!
Great place. Has that neighborhood feeling to it
Great...not too busy at our visit time and the ice cream was excellent!
If you love good ice cream with a great smile great staff then what are you waiting for.. Chicago at its best👍🏿
Got the rainbow cone. Was impressed with the different ice creams. Thought I was going to get the ice cream version of rainbow sherbet. Pleasantly surprised.
Ice cream is delicious. Get the rainbow cone its different and GOOD!
I would definitely suggest the rainbow cone the other flavors are not as good and definitely not worth the $$
The best ice cream in the land. Chicagos best. A true landmark!
My first time being there in over 10 YEARS and my return turned out horrible. The then fantastic customer service and professionalism is DEAD. the cashier was nice but other employees were on the phones as they prepare the food orders. Two girls were In the back room in PLAIN SIGHTS rubbing on each other and one girl affectionately had ✋ around the other neck. Both laughing while the line was out the door. Napkins all over the floor, but nobody sees THIS cause all were on phones and laughing( except cashier and manager on duty). After notifying the manager on duty of the napkins being all over the floor. She handled it swiftly. The waffle cones I used to order were nice n big.. Not this time around.. Waffle cones looking like straws and my 2 scoops seems as if I paid for 1 scoop. Spent $30.00 last night but after my return..Expectations were lowered and I will not return. Now.. I can get better cones n ice cream at baskin robbins. I am a black man from Englewood of chicago( 71 st ashland) and I really miss the original crew of PEOPLE. And thats saying SOMETHING.
They are awesome!!! They fixed my order even after I was the one that messed up. Ice cream had amazing flavor
Much smaller inside than it appears, but the wait wasnt too long. The staff was very friendly, so that was good and there is limited parking available, which is always a good perk.
THIS PARTICULAR TIME I WENT THEY WERE OUT OF, MY FAVORITE ICE CREAM, I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. BUT THE SERVICE IS ALWAYS GOOD.
Love the flavor of the layers of icecream or you can get any one flavor on a sugar cone or waffle cone.
Been a customer for years and always enjoy the great quality of ice cream. Give me chocolate and pistachio!
Too bad I live so far away. I love rainbow cone ice cream. You cant go wrong with an ice cream cake from Rainbow Cone for a birthday party.Try it! Youll thank me later.
Worth the trip if you dont live on the south side.
It was very busy, but line moved fast. Ice cream was very good.
Still taste great. I got the pint and they give you cones to make yourself, how classy is that!
Nostalgic..been coming here for decades..same flavor great ice cream and cakes..always friendly
The ice speaks for itself! Good service as well. As good as I remember from 20+ years ago.
Cookie dough never have cookie dough pieces. I’m basically eating vanilla. Otherwise, customer service is good
Really friendly staff and delicious Ice cream! Good music too on the speakers
Rainbow Cone is a quintessential Chicago experience and was one of the first places we stop when we come back to town.
Love love love this place! Great ice cream. Great service
A must try! Love the rainbow cone, especially the pistachio and palmer house ones.

Love this place went as a child, took my sons and now my grandchildren. Great flavors
A South Side treasure. It has been 30 years since I last had a Rainbow Cone and I have to say that they are still just as good as I remember
Easy from start to finish and the fact that they have a traffic light to get in and out is amazing.
Ice cream is always good here. Service is also good! One of my favorites!
A MUST stop when visiting the south side of Chicago, chocked full of flavor and history.
Ice cream cone its kind of pricey but it is worth it, its mmm mmm good

I absolutely loved this place!! It was a nice day outside, so everyone was sitting on the patio, it wasnt crowded and I enjoyed my Cookies n cream on a cone.
