For Christmas of 2018 a friend gifted us a $100 certificate to Brew and Grow. Having never got around to using it until recently I knew that there would likely have been some fees removed from the balance (card states $2.50 fee per month after 24 months without card activity, this would be ~$25 in fees). My husband visited the store this week to pick up supplies so we could finally get around to some home brewing. When he went to check out, the sales clerk told him there was no balance on the gift card and called a manager for help. This rigmarole went on for nearly an hour - in the end it resulted in them telling him that gift card was from 2020, they could not honor any balance and then confiscated the card. This place is cool and the people are nice but this sort of treatment is unacceptable. 10/10 would not recommend.EDIT: to respond to the owner —“All we would need is the day the transactions occurred, the total amount, and the last four digits of the card.”As mentioned in the very first line of my review. This was a GIFT, asking for any of those things is wildly inappropriate - especially considering this gift is 3 years old. This business needs to implement a more sophisticated record keeping system for their gift cards or add a disclaimer that the protection of card balance is beyond their capabilities.

Love that they carry my favorite potting soil. (Roots organic 707) This stuff is seriously the sauce. I would be back so much more often if they carried more dry fertilizers by roots organic. PLEASE GET THE UPRISING LINE IT GOES HAND IN HAND WITH THE TERP TEA LINE!They carry a good selection of Down to Earth as well as some liquid nutes.I also got everything I needed to make my first mead at home. All in all, I love this store. If it had a greater selection of my preferred nutrient, then I wouldnt go anywhere else, literally.

Well stocked and clean but a recurring issue I seem to have is poor interactions with the cashiers, note plural. While other staff is friendly and willing to answer questions, the cashier seems to be where the experience becomes negative. On my latest visit I felt a sense of unwelcoming as I asked the individual about multiple jars on the counter containing what appeared to be Cannabis, and the individual seemed like I was bothering him by just being there. As such, I recommend you direct your queries to any employee except the cashier. I have had more negative experiences with other cashiers as well so take that into account.

My brother and I visited B&G yesterday to get started making our own beer. We arrived with minimal knowledge about what to get. We browsed the wide selection for a little bit then were pleasantly greeted by Amy. She was very helpful, knowledgeable, and extremely passionate about the products. After asking some good questions, she was able to direct us to what we needed and answer all of our questions. I plan on shopping here exclusively for my brewing needs. Thank you!

Their website is impossible to navigate and their store isnt the best experience. I used to go to Northern Brewer in Milwaukee before I moved to Chicago and that was a much better experience. Good: Large selection of grains and equipment.Bad: Rude employees, misleading price tags, high prices, low hop and yeast selection.First, employees are rude...especially the younger guys working there. When I asked if I could have my grains crushed, the guy looked at me like I was stupid and said sarcastically: Yeah, if you can turn a crank, Skippy. They have a super small selection of hops, in spite of the fact that the hop harvest just happened. There will also be a 50/50 chance they are out of the kind of yeast you want. Also, you will NOT pay the price you see on the shelf. In fact, the prices are very random, and you wont have a clue how much you are spending until you check out. For example, 5 lbs of 2-row barley is listed at $4.95, but they charge $6.95.The location also stinks. Its in an industrial park away from much of anything. I have to take a train and then a bus to get there.Just buy the stuff online where it will be much cheaper...

While the first time I went to this store I had a good experience, the most recent experience makes me compelled to write a review. Ive been been to 6 or 7 different brew stores over the last 5 years and this was the by far the worst experience I had ever had. My new brew buddy went to pick up ingredients when I was travelling for work and said the female worker was extremely unhelpful and even after explaining that he was new to brewing, she didnt assist. After he purchased she did not ask if he needed the grain milled (which after 4 years of brewing Ive never had a store clerk NOT ask that question). On brew day we had to make an extra trip out there to buy new grain and the same employee was extremely rude and unhelpful to me this time. She was clearly agitated that it was near closing time, however we wouldnt have had to come back in the first place if she would have asked if we needed the grain milled. Their Pils malt was almost empty and she spent only a few seconds trying to look for the replacement before she gave up. When finally ready to repurchase I asked her if she could mill it for us, and she rudely retorted that I could mill it myself, and told me the mill was back there. She was too lazy to walk the 15 steps and show me where it was so I had to go around guessing where the mill was. When I finally found it she was rude and said I had to pay for it first, even though I had JUST been at the counter ready to pay and she sent me walking over to find the mill on my own. Usually brew stores are filled with really knowledgeable passionate brewers, instead this store seems to be stuck with (at least one) incredibly rude, incompetent, and lazy worker. Ill be going elsewhere from now on.

When I first moved to Chicago 7 years ago, customer service etc. was amazing. Over the years theyve grown and now they hire 17 year old morons to run the garden counter. IF I had no other options Id probably still shop here and just do my own online research, however, in Chicago I have multiple options and several of them have extremely knowledgable and helpful staff. If you have serious needs and questions go elsewhere, if you want free coffee and to over hear kids talking about how they made it in today only 7 minutes late, then go to BnG.
