I heard some good things about this place so I was excited to try. I ordered a Lox Sandwich on a salted bagel. The bagel was extremely tough so it was super hard to chew. I also couldn’t taste the cream cheese or Lox due to the absolutely overloaded salt on the bagel. I’ve ordered salted bagels for Lox sandwiches and have never had this much salt on a bagel. Huge chunks of sea salt covered every inch of this bagel and it’s all you can taste. Also, the “sandwich” didn’t come with any toppings - not sure if that’s normal here but was expecting the usual capers, onions, etc that are found on Lox sandwiches. Super disappointed but can’t even finish it due to the saltiness.
Best Bagels west of NYC! Big, fresh, crunchy, & chewy. From plain egg to other flavors and flavored cream cheese, each one is a meal. Cant wait to try the other NY deli items on the menu.
Yes. Im a bae-gel kind of gal. A @gothambagelschi gal.Order online and pick up your delicious order. Not only do they have delicious Bagels, but they have awesome sandwiches also.We had a half dozen bagels, 2 each plain, 2 each of egg and 2 each of cinnamon raisin. All were fresh and delicious even a couple of days later.Look at this delicious Bagel lox and cream cheese sandwich that we ordered. All of their sandwiches come with a Gothams finest pickle. They have a nice variety of sandwiches, it was very hard to choose. You have your choice of spreads either plain, vegan plain, scallion, vegan scallion, brown butter, or honey cherry tart.Next time Im going to get an OMFG sandwich. It consists of a fried egg, aged cheddar, Nashville fried chicken, thick-cut bacon, spicy aioli and Gothams finest pickle.Dont forget the bagel chips or any of the extras. They also sell smoked salmon, traditional tuna fish and pastrami Plus Gothams finest pickles.
One of the better bagels I’ve had in my life. Big and airy with a nice chew and good crunch on the outside. Everything seasoning was on point and the pumpernickel was superb as well. Chive cream cheese gets and a plus. The sandwich my brother ate looked phenomenal. Only weak point from our order was their “famous” pickles were pretty weak. Not what I would consider a good pickle but to each their own.
Its not easy to find a good bagel in Chicago, but this place is perfect! Bagels are crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. They also have vegan cream cheese (plain and scallion), making it the perfect breakfast for me.
Good bagels outside of the NYC Metro area are hard to find. Gotham manages to put out a product that would be considered good to even the pickiest NYC resident who has access to 5 bagel shops in a 3 block radius. You can tell that the owner puts passion into bringing good quality bagels outside of the midatlantic bubble. My complaints are minor, and only in comparison to shops in the bagel heartland. Prices are high compared to the highly competitive, cutthroat, high volume NYC scene, service is comparatively slow, and Id really, really love for them to include a good hard roll in their repertoire so I can get me a BEC SP. This is all meaningless when you take the quality of their product into account.Overall, highly recommended to try if youre a transplant or just looking for an excellent NYC style bagel. Five stars.
Been here twice and waited 45-50 minutes each time for two bagels and cream cheese. The bagels are good, but not worth that kind of wait.
Two starts because they have decent bagels and are pretty much the only bagel place nearby. However, the people make the experience pretty unenjoyable. They’re always insanely rude. Not to mention they are the most expensive bagels in the city. Don’t go out of your way to come here.
Absolute fire, I will 100% be coming back to get my bagel sandwich fix. Looking forwarding to trying all the different kinds they have. Ive never had a spicy pickle before and cant wait to have another. Also the staff was very helpful.
Not worth the hype. Over priced. $13 BEC. Followed a few Chicago foodies who posted about this shop, and was excited to try, and was a total disappointment. Bagels are very hard, and the $13 BEC only has one egg and barely any bacon (see photo). 1/10 recommend based on quality, price, and portion size.
I found myself in Madison on my way to AirVenture in Oshkosk and stumbled across this excellent bagel shop. The online ordering was easy and my bagels were ready in just a few minutes. The great schmear flavors go well with the chewy bagels. Im stopping by on my way back!
Best bagels this side of the Mississippi. Get the egg everything.
Just slightly over priced however the donuts were deliscious. Stuffed with cream cheese and requested toppings. Very nice outdoor patio seating and staff continuously sanitize chairs and tables between each use.
Love this spot!!! Had it once and keep going back. Adorable location, friendly staff, deliciously indulgent bagel sandwiches, super fresh high-quality ingredients, and great lattes, to boot. Would highly recommend this place - order ahead to avoid the lines :D
Online only. Its very high quality, but every bite feels like a kick in the mouth. Tried both the seasonal Hudson valley (Roasted Acorn Squash, pickled beet and carrot salad, honey walnut cream cheese, cinnamon raisin bagel) and the yellow CAB (Cheddar, avocado, bacon, arugula, tomato & mayo) and both were sloppy and had too much going on. Glad I ate the pickle alongside the bagel because it wouldve been too grandiose stand-alone. Just seems like theyre trying to outdo something that doesnt need to be overdone. Might grab a LOX & Cream Cheese one day if Im in the neighborhood but would definitely not eat either of the two I tried again.
Can’t say enough good things about this place!! Hands down the best bagels in town!!
By far, the best bagels I have had in Chicago. Theyre delicious - clearly made with care by people who took the time to create a high-quality product. The sandwiches are terrific too - the details and caliber of ingredients are appreciated and worth the value (e.g., the hand-made cream cheese). As someone who still craves fresh-from-the oven neighborhood NYC bagels, this is the best Ive had outside that city. And the staff couldnt be nicer or more helpful. After my first visit, I became a regular.
I’ve had a really poor experience with this place. It’s Online only which is a bit of a nuisance but kind of expected in today’s age so you can overlook that. The first time i went ordered a salt bagel, which I do not recommend. There was so much salt on it it wasn’t even edible. I mean I’ve never tasted anything so salty. Plus it took more than 60! minutes for my order to be ready (granted it was a Saturday so I assume weekdays might be better). Oh well lesson learned. I gave it a second chance recently, but this time I couldn’t even order my food. Their website did not recognize my account and didn’t even let me change my password! And because it recognized my phone number I couldn’t even try to sign up from scratch saying “an account with this number already exists. Please try again.” I guess I’ll have to look elsewhere in Old Town for a $5 bagel with cream cheese.
Great bagels, but pickup time is kind of insane (30+ min for two bagels). Will be better when they open up again!
Good food, but takes way WAY too long to get a breakfast sandwich on a Saturday morning. We waited 45-50 minutes to get out take out food after ordering online. Next time I will be looking for more expedient options.
Very mediocre. Not enough lox on the bagel, also, nothing else but lox on the bagel, even though the picture shows arugula - no tomato, onion, capers, nothing - plain lox and cream cheese. Very disappointing. Three stars only because bagels themselves were pretty good. I did get the last two egg bagels however, they didn’t even have more.
Since moving here in 2015, I have on a CONSTANT hunt for a bagel that brings me back to NYC and this is the first bagel that has ever done exactly that for me in Chi-City. Way to go Gotham! I order a dozen and freeze them. The bagel chips are super tasty too!!
Bagel was OK, eggs and bacon were barely warm
I agree with the other negative reviews here. Bagel did not taste fresh and was overpriced. Wait times are very long too. About 40 minutes in my case. Nothing like a traditional neighborhood bagel shop you’d find in the northeast.
Insane wait times with Online ordering only. Took over 50 minutes for my order to be ready while we waited. Overpriced and not worth the obnoxiously long wait time.
Ordered the Brighton Beach (smoked salmon bagel) and it was really yummy. I ordered it on an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese- highly recommend that combo. All of the ingredients were of high quality. I only take away a star because of wait time- 35 mins. If you want an upscale bagel and are willing to wait, give this place a shot.
Giant fresh bagels. Zero wait if you order on a weekday.
The rating of this place is criminally low for the quality of their bagels alone.
Extremely fresh bagels and delicious housemade cream cheese!
These bagels are amazing! Visiting from the east coast and can honestly say these are some of the best bagels Ive had. We ordered delivery and they included a free bag of bagel chips with our order. Would highly recommend!
Gotham requires you to order online, which is a bit of a hassle for what I would expect from a bagel shop. Then, to order online you have to create an account. You cannot check out otherwise. Once we finally got our order placed, it took 25 minutes for our bagels to be ready. The bagels were not made fresh to order, so I cant imagine what could have taken 25 minutes. When we finally got our bagels, they were just okay. Mine had been toasted (upon special request, because there is no standard way to request a toasted bagel) but was barely even warm, presumably because of the 25 minute wait.Bagel shops are supposed to be fast and easy. You walk in, you order a bagel, and less than five minutes later you have a bagel. Bad overall experience, and absolutely not worth $6 per bagel (quite possibly the most expensive bagel Ive ever purchased). Also, the cold brew coffee is overpriced and not very good.
This is the most physically difficult bagel I have ever eaten and I eat bagels almost every day. My bagel is rock hard and my jaw hurts from eating only half the bagel. They also forgot to add cream cheese on the bagel that I ordered.
GREAT bagels. Nice selection of spreads and toppings.
$11 for a trash bacon egg and cheese...can get significantly better bacon egg and cheese at a corner bodega in nyc for $3.50. Don’t waste your money here.
The bagels are incredibly soft, chewy and delicious. Gourmet toppings, friendly staff and prompt service make this place a new staple among the Gold Coast food scene.
The bagel sandwiches were very tasty, although a couple dollars overpriced. Word of advice to visitors, put in your order ahead of time, as this is not a quick stop bagel shop. They are online orders only, and we waited 45 minutes for two bagel sandwiches on a Sunday morning. It would have been nice for their website to advise on the current wait time; the wait was an unpleasant surprise.
Best bagel Ive had in Chicago. Scratched the itch Ive had since moving from New York. Worth the wait.
Weve tried quite a few bagel places in Chicago trying to find one that matches the way they are in NY, and this is by far the best weve found! Cant believe theyre new, they seem to have it so figured out!
Walked over there on a Sunday morning @ 930am. 4 guys working front of house, not really sure what they were doing. Went to order 2 bagels and was told I had to order online via the website. I pointed out that I was standing there in person with money in my hand- they insisted I had to order online. I Went to order online only to find that online ordering was “unavailable” . Bear in mind this is a bagel shop operating out of a restaurant with a full service kitchen. I pointed this out to the manager and he told me that he “thinks” online ordering will be available again at 1015/1030. Terribly disappointing, I was really excited about the new bagel shop in my neighbourhood. Common sense needed.
I indulged in a half dozen bagels and they did not disappoint! Service was great and my order was ready when I arrived.
Quality sandwich ingredients and a veryyy good bagel. I lived in NYC for 10 years and have been on a bagel hunt since moving to Chicago, this one is definitely up there! Prices are on the high side and so is the quality. You get what you pay for- in a very good way!
The food is good, but not worth the price at all. Their bagels are ridiculously priced and don’t even get me started on the breakfast sandwiches. They charge an extra $2.50 for cheese. It should already come with cheese on it. Head to Rush Street and get a steak dinner instead.
Stop calling yourselves NYC anything. NYC serves sandwiches on hard rolls and heros. Our bagels cost no more than 2.50 and thats the max price. Also no where in NYC considers Nashville hot chicken as an NYC favorite. Lox on bagels has been played out, VERY few places do it, even most jewish spots dont.
Each time I have Gotham I am more and more impressed. By far the best bagels in Chicago. The staff are responsive, helpful, and kind. Just carried out for Yom Kippur and everything was perfect— the bagels, the cream cheese, and lox. And the brown butter cream cheese is amazing !!! Also obsessed with the egg everything!
I’ve experienced Detroit and New York bagels and when I moved to Chicago 3 years ago I looked for good bagels. I’ve tried many places and markets. I recently found Gotham Bagels and they are the BEST without doubt. My favs are everything. Egg everything. Pumpernickel. Cinnamon raisin. Poppyseed. And their Scallion cream cheese. I feel like I’m in New York. Glad they are nearby so I’ll be a regular from now on.
Finally a great bagel in downtown Chicago! They did a great job matching the Madison location in quality of bagel. Can’t wait to go back a bakers dozen times over.
Thou shall not receive food on time
Best bagels in town freshley made ive tried both locations In Wisconsin and Chicago. great service..and there menu is straight forward
Stale bagel with a half slice of bacon
Wow I could stuff my face with these bagels everyday. That Sag Harbor sandwich is a hidden gem on the menu. (Little secret, they are located inside Eduardos, one of my favorite neighborhood spots!)
Don’t order from Gotham unless you want to wait 1+ hour for a bagel with cream cheese. Staff was impolite and didn’t let us sit inside to wait for an overdue order. It’s not steaks guys, it’s a bagel.
Decent bagels for a hefty price. Definitely not a NYC substitute bagel like some of the reviews suggest.
Overpriced bagel sandwiches and still getting their legs under them with getting orders ready by the estimated time. Not worth the wait or price if you are looking for a quick and easy breakfast sandwich.
My first review ever just to say that this place is the best bagel in Chicago. By a considerable margin.
These bagels are outstanding and the boys who run Gotham Bagels in Chicago are awesome! Can’t wait to go back for more.
The Madison location is an Icon in the capital city of Wisconsin, and the second location in Chicago doesn’t disappoint!
Hard rock and very expensive bagels, waste your money somewhere else!
This has to be the best bagel you can get in the city today. Make sure you get your order in early they sell out quickly!
Best bagels in Chicago by far. We need more locations plz
Had a lovely Breakfast and coffee on a beautiful fall morning
I’ve had a lot of bagels and these are fantastic
Just what the neighborhood needed, best bagels in the city!
Exorbitant price$$ for okay bagels. Sad.
Scrumdillyumpcious 10/10! Will be back again
Absolutely the best!
Cool stuff
This place is a joke. Online orders only, been waiting outside for 45 minutes for 2 bagels - there’s literally no one else here. You think they would prioritize people who ordered on-site vs online but that’s simply not the case. Staff is unhelpful and doesn’t seem to care about other’s time. Highly recommend coming here if you want to waste your whole morning for some mediocre bagels.
