Yesterday I visited Great Outdoor Provision Co., and this store really has a lot to offer Charlottesville VA! The staff here are very friendly and helpful. I liked how the various departments were organized, so it was easy to find various merchandise. Thankfully, this store had a nice short sleeve shirt by Duck Head that I really liked as well as an attractive pair of Patagonia shorts. I ended up purchasing both items. Also, I am grateful this store has a very nice community bulletin board where I could post a few flyers for a property listed at Trice’s Lake in Cumberland County. Great Outdoor Provision definitely has a lot to offer for people who like the outdoors!
I wish I could remember her name but a college age girl, who told me she was training for a marathon before covid, gave me the best advice when looking for hiking shoes. Will definitely go back. Prices are great!
Some of the best, friendliest, most knowledgeable customer service around. Whatever your adventure entails, they will help you get set up with the right gear. Generous return policy if a purchase doesnt work out for you. Sometimes I find great deals on their clearance rack too. This place is a perfect example that you might save a few bucks shopping online or at a big box store but it will end up costing you more in the long run. When you walk out the door of this place, you know you have exactly what you need, that its a good fit and that the quality is top notch. Highly recommend this place!
Stopped by here for hiking boots for husband and me. Employees were nice and helpful. Decent selection of brands - Keen, Oboz, and Hoka. The store also had camping gear and backpacks. I recommend stopping by the store!
Really wide selection and friendly, helpful staff. While they didnt have the product I was looking for in stock, the sales associate pointed me in the right direction. Would definitely come back here if I need other outdoor gear.
Kind of a let down. I have visited this location a few times. When asking about shoes, the sales staff are incredibly helpful. They have great selections. I also recently talked to 1 sales associate who took his time to make recommendations for layering options for an upcoming trip to Iceland. However, they were closing so I couldnt try stuff on at the time.I came back in hopes to try on some stuff. I am a member at REI and while I could benefit from buying gear there, the sales associate was helpful and money stays a bit more local to cville vs driving the hour+ into Richmond. I was unfortunately let down when I looked around to find my size. Most of the womens attire can only be found in XS-M. I am not sure if this is the buyer focusing on ordering multiples in smaller sizes or a lack of awareness that the customer base in this area tends to buy L and XL first. Styles are also limited. I understand buying seasonal styles in limited orders and selling out, but basic layering options like t-shirts are not available. There was a dark blue option by Patagonia with 1 large, and a few others IN 1s or 2s, but all in smaller sizes. There were limited pieces (only 1 item by Prana I found) and not much in KUHL. The smartwool section for women was exceptionally limited. 1 sparse rack toward the shoe section which included mostly the 250 weight long sleeve options and a couple pair of leggings. No wool tshirts for hiking or travel were found.I came to realize this store is more male focused. With about 12 full sized floor racks (including a few doubles) and a wall commanding nearly the whole length of the store(easily 3/4), men have a lot of options here. The women however have 1/4 the wall space, and only about 8 floor racks. The men have 2 racks dedicated to smartwool products vs the one previously described in the womens section.I was approached twice by older males asking if I needed help, however felt it was moot to ask after noticing the lack of sizes available. I usually wear a large in shirts. I know the staff can be very helpful, but feel let down by the selections. I browsed the camping section to check out possible bag options, and they have some nice options there if that helps.
I am relatively new to kayaking and have recently visited 3 different outdoor speciality retailers within a 2 hr drive. Of all the 3 businesses Great Outdoor Provisions (Charlottesville) is hands down my first choice! The staff...everyone I talked to are knowledgeable and personable. Ill drive the 45 minutes to get there.
Well stocked outdoor provisions store with a range of technical hiking / climbing equipment and every-day outdoor gear from hiking boots to ball caps, tents and backpacks. Staff are always friendly and knowledge and can offer bonus tips about ways to explore outdoors in the Cville area.
Excellent Customer Service! I bought a pair of Salomon trail shoes a few weeks ago here and after only a few weeks the laces frayed. I called to see what I could to replace them given theyre not regular laces. I talked to Drew who recommended I come and see what he could do given the supply chain delays that Salomon is seeing right now. I took the shoes in and he re-laced them for me at no charge and suggested I reach out to Salomon directly with this issue. I did that and they are sending me a new Quicklace Kit.While this defect was unfortunate, Drew came to rescue and resolved it quickly to 100% satisfaction. Ill be doing all of my outdoors shopping at Great Outdoor in Charlottesville!

Absolutely recommend this store! The people are very helpful, nice, knowledgable, and patient. They spent over 45 minutes with me on the phone - patiently answering all my questions and staying upbeat - when I was interested in purchasing a kayak (mind you this was before I purchased, so they had no guarantee Id buy). They also were not pushy at all and gave me real and helpful advice.Then when picking up the kayak, they spent over 2 hours with me showing me the boat, as well as teaching me how to load the kayak both with a partner and solo. Ive been able to easily and successfully load the kayak solo multiple times while being a 53 and loading a 12 boat on a small SUV.Owe many thanks to Great Outdoor Provision Co. for a great experience. Ill be back!
I went in looking for a birthday gift for my boyfriend. I was greeted by Katie who was knowledgable, passionate, enthusiastic and a joy to talk to. She made the whole experience so fun. She asked what my budget was, helped me find options, told me about her personal experiences using the products, then brought me pen and paper to calculate total costs. She took care of my every need and was really fun to talk to. I came away very happy with what I purchased. (A water filtration system and hiking maps.) Haha, this is more a review of Katie than the store. :) (The store is great too, very well stocked and so fun to browse.) Anyway, managers, I hope you know what a gem you have in Katie. She made my experience outstanding. It was the highlight of my day. I will definitely come back soon for holiday shopping!
I love this store. Everything about it. The people are always so friendly, the products are always top of the line and I can always find something to purchase when I come into the store! Ive never been somewhere where the employees are so knowledgeable and willing to help with whatever you are needing. This is by far the best outdoor store in Charlottesville.
Marissa was amazing!!! My husband and I frequent this store all the time and all the employees have been so helpful. Our most recent trip was to have our packs checked over before our AT trip. Marissa helped us with EVERYTHING. She was so knowledgeable and friendly and really made me feel so much better about our gear and our trip. She was the bomb!Would recommend this place 110% for anything outdoors. They have great selection of everything

I am absolutely blown away by the wonderful customer service I received while shopping for 2 kayaks for myself and my son during the COVID-19 pandemic. We began with numerous phone calls with Tim at the store to help me determine what kind and what features I needed, and having him help me pick out accessories over the phone. When I showed up for curbside pickup, Tim and Drew went above and beyond to help me install my new kayak roof rack, make sure I could load the kayaks by myself while standing by to give tips and help when needed, help me get fitted for a life jacket and a paddle and explain kayak basics to this paddling newbie (all while completely respecting social distancing)! They stayed past the closing time of the store to make sure I was comfortable, and even told me that if I had trouble loading the boats or didnt like them once I took them out a couple of times that I could bring them back!Absolutely so happy that I shopped here, will definitely be back for any outdoor sport equipment needs I may have! Thank you!

I have an excellent experience every time I shop at Great Outdoor Provision. I love this shop for its friendly and knowledgeable staff and great deals. I have always been able to find exactly what I am looking for related to my kayaking, camping, hiking, backpacking, or traveling experience. Recently I was struggling with putting my new roof rack on my SUV and gave them a call. They made an appointment and my rack was on in a jiffy. It looks so great now! I recommend this shop to anyone who loves the outdoors and wants the best customer service!
I entered the store to buy new hiking shoes, but uncertain of exactly what I wanted. I was assisted by Marissa, who was not only very patient of my fitting and selection process, but she was also a wealth of knowledge about shoe construction, wear, and appropriate matching of shoes to intended purpose. Everyone else I encountered in the store, from the person who greeted me at the door to the one who rang me up, was also very friendly and helpful.

Recently shopped for a kayak. Drew took the time showing the plus and faults of different brand for my size. I was at the Charlottesville store and I am very pleased. My wife has hiked with other staff from this location and they are the best. Pepper who has done extensive hiking as an organizer and is very knowledgeable. Drew took the time for me to demo the Kayak I was interested in to make sure I would be satisfied. Thank for everything guys as I will continue to shop this location in the future.
Great store! Cant say enough about their customer service. The guy helping us in the Brooks tennis shoes (forgot to get his name) was amazing. I needed a wide size which they didnt have, but he was very knowledgeable about all the brands and was able to offer good suggestions. He was also very patient while I tried on the shoes they did have. Would definitely go there again.

Went up there from Richmond with the hopes of getting help getting my roof rack installed. Drew was very gracious, kind and amazingly helpful. Didn’t get rack on that day but was able to a few days later. Amazing people, store and top notch customer service. Will go back many times, A+ store and staff!!!
Great spot to browse and buy. Love their selection of cold weather accessories. They have great prices and a good rotation on stock. Great for the casual or more serious outdoor enthusiast.
This is a very quaint store. Have been multiple times for things like carabineers, hats, and womens and mens outdoor clothes. Staff is awesome, prices are comparable to other outdoor stores. Only knocked off a star because their kids outdoor clothing and outdoor accessories section was almost non-existent
I have purchased womens clothing items, socks and shoes at this store. All products I have purchased are well known brands and they all function above and beyond my expectations. The interior design of the store is fun, the layout of goods provides a nice flow to the shopping experience. The sales people are informed and courteous. I really like the Barracks Road location. A specialty outdoor gear shop with at least one employee (earl?) that doesnt know the difference between a hard a soft shell. I was looking for some hard shell gore- tex pants and earl full blown argued with a potential customer on a subject he was ignorant on. Its really a shame that they would hire an ass hat like that, Because the store does have good gear although, overpriced. Its not conducive to good business to employ people like that when customers are going to know their gear.
Cannot say enough good things about this place. The employees (especially Clay and Drew) really know the products they carry and will go out of their way to help you if something is not right. Extensive selection of pretty much anything you need, and plenty of stuff you just straight up want. If youre looking for outdoor equipment and clothing this is the place to go.
I typically dont write reviews but I was blown away by the service that I received here.Jonathan went above and beyond walking me through all the backpacking packs that the store has to offer. He made me feel right at home and was very knowledgeable about all of the small differences between the packs and their intended uses.After being fitted me to the Osprey Atmos 65 I couldnt believe how comfortable the thing was. I must gave been wearing my old pack incorrectly because I would always have pain in my spine after a few hours. Goes to show what a difference going to a professional makes. Now I feel ready to take on the trails this spring! Thanks Great Outdoor Provision Company!

Clean and inviting store. Have all the major outdoor brands; North Face, Outdoor Research, Kuhl, Patagonia, and others I have never heard of. I was looking for Patagonia jackets and after visiting REI and Dicks in NOVA, I was able to find a wide selection of the style and size of the jacket I was looking for.
Great store. The staff was knowledgeable and attentive and the selection of outdoor gear was excellent.
These guys are great and deserve your business for several reasons. First, They are the only company in Cville that carries everything you need to build a car rack on your car. They also have cargo boxes in several sizes. Second, When there was some confusion on a roof rack on my Mazda they helped me figure out the best alternative. In addition they gave me store credit for a part I didnt buy at their store because they felt bad for their part in the confusion. They went above and beyond. Thanks again OP!N
My preferred place to spend my money on outdoor equipment. They carry most of the brands I use while camping, hiking, or canoeing (Patagonia, Keen, Wilderness Systems, etc.). Decent prices and great selection.
Awesome selection and fantastic staff. I needed to know what metal a piece of hardware was made out of, and rather than the all too familiar probably some type of steel, the guy actually looked it up and was able to give me the actual (elemental in this case) metal.
The folks at Great Outdoor Provisions Co. are incredibly helpful. They have the products I need paired with the people I need whove given invaluable advice, tips, and tricks for my upcoming AT thru-hike.
