I came from Raleigh and decided to stop by. I got 3 patties: a beef, chicken curry, and vegetable. The vegetable was moist and super flavorful. The beef tasted like every other beef patty Ive had but better in everyway. The chicken curry was seasoned amazingly with really soft chicken and the perfect amount of chicken curry inside. All of them were heckin flakey. 10 out of 10 patties. I wish I got the jerk chicken patty but they were out. Everyone at the counter was extremely nice as well.

This place keeps you coming back with the best authentic Jamaican & Caribbean eats! The jerk / stew / curry chicken here is a local stable.$5.50 lunch special is a choice of meat with two sides + can soda might be the best deal in town. If you can’t choose, just get two lunch specials and you will leave happy.

I’ve always known about this place for grocery but never tried the food until today. Really disappointed with the lack of flavor in my stewed chicken, rice and peas with cabbage plate. It was very bland so I’ll stick to purchasing my own seasoning and making dishes at home. However, their prices for curry powder went from $4.29 to $5.99 so unless I’m desperate I’ll get it from Amazon. I love to support my people but only when it makes sense.

🇯🇲 food. Jamaican market. My wife is from the islands. She loves this place because the food reminds her of home. Market for spices, bun, goat, oxtail, plantain, etc. Restaurant carryout for Jamaican favorites, thats authentic. Not much to look at with a small foot print. But if your in to island food you will not be disappointed.

PLEASE BE SAFE visiting this establishment during this pandemic. Too many customers in a small crammed area waiting on line for food or to pay for items! After an order is complete have the person(s) stand outside or stand near the door!!!!! Yes, there are posted spots on the floor to show customers the 6 feet distance but it’s not enforced. Speak up if you see people are not cooperating! There’s also a one way direction to prevent people from going in multiple directions but it’s not forced! While on line Employees are coming from the back for whatever reason which is causing more anxiety because it’s TOO MANY PEOPLE IN ONE STORE! One employee walked in with no mask on until she got to the back of the store. I suggest to have a ticketing system or individual numbers for the TO GO orders. Once the people order their food, give them an estimated time it will be finished, have them pay, wait outside (in car) and come back inside to pick up order. I’ve been to restaurants who will walk the food outside to the door. This should free up some space for your grocery shoppers!! I felt so uncomfortable being in there I had to leave.. allowing that many people in your establishment at once is not safe for your customers or employees!!!

Island Grocery has been a place where my wife and I would get certain Jamaican items when we were far between a visit to NYC or ATL. Easter bun would be one of those item we would buy from this neat little establishment. IG would be a certain stop when we do grocery shopping every other month, since we moved to Lake Norman area in 2009.Fast forward to March 29, 2021, returning a Maxfield Easter bun that was purchased by my wife from IG the previous Friday. Upon reaching home she discovered that the Easter bun was dry so she called the store and was told that IG has no control over the quality of the product, but after much reasoning with the store employee an arrangement was made to exchange the Maxfield bun for another brand. So because I work in Charlotte, I would be the one to make the switch, hence me being @ IG the afternoon of March 29.When I got there, I was told that the owner of the store turned down the offer to switch the item and that I needed to contact the manufacturer of the baked product to get a replacement. First, the manufacturer is based in Jamaica WI and was not about to be trying to contact Maxfield Bakery to get the bun replaced. Therefore I had to argue with the lady upfront about not being able to switch out a defective food item, that we should eat the $20.00 cost for this item and thats it. Not an option for me. The employee then went on the say that she will pay for a new bun from her own pocket, however I told her she should not be having to pay out of her pocket to please customers while the owner can disregard our issue. Anyway I took the bun and left but I will be making a formal complaint to the BBB about this store and their unreasonable return policy.

Looks are misleading at this location. From the outside it looks to be a small and cosey store, but inside somehow everything is well positioned and proportioned where you can enjoy the shopping of the natural and organic remedies of old fashioned Caribbean products. They are equipped with good curry jerk chicken, beef, etc. Individuals are very knowledgeable of herbs and spices that still cure.Ill continue to shop and express my appreciation. Thank you you again for your help. 😎✊🏿✌🏿

Ive passed this place dozens of times and only went when I needed cough syrup. Weird, I know, but they are the only place that sells this specific syrup in the area and came at a recommendation of a co-worker from the islands. The first time I went I was surprised that it wasnt only a small grocery but they sold cooked food to go. Alot of the island style dishes you would see on Caribbean menus and it was really good.I nice little gem tucked away that I would highly recommend. Be sure to bring your patience because you are on Island time as soon as you walk in the door.

Went there today for the second time. Only because this restaurant has a really cheap lunch specials. Although it wasn’t that great the first time. Thought I would give it a second chance. So, today I got jerk chicken, red beans and rice and yams. Jerk chicken tasted the same as it did the first time. Warmed up left over barbecue chicken. Rice was sub par. However, I guess if one wanted yams ..maybe this would be the place to go . They were homemade, although I fear they are part of leftovers as well.Lady up front is rude, nasty and lacks basic customer service. Especially from a hole in the wall, that should be doing everything they can to attract and keep customers!

Very displeased. Got Brown Stew King fish meal. This should NOT have a tomato based taste nor be bland. Fish was dry and overcooked. This is my 3rd time trying to support this business. Please refrain from catering to everyone. As a Jamaican, I know what authentic cuisine taste like. This is NOT it. Where is the pepper? STOP with the American side options. Keep it REAL!!! In Florida and in NY, there are no Ametican options. Stay in your lane and perfect the meals. The veggies are also bland. No red peppers, no seasoning.... I am so disappointed and will not be back. Shame on you!!!
