Inside: Interpretive signs and Exhibits (local geographic history): 45 minutes if youre a reader. Outside (1 hour): 1.2 mile paved trail including local flora signage. I observed: Reptile house with 10 animals, 2 bob cats, 1 tortoise, 2 prairie dogs, 3 elk, 2 bison, javelina, a hawk & owl. (Long way of saying its technically a zoo, but keep expectations in check). Bathrooms & drinking fountains available. RV/ bus parking with clear signage (be advised its on top of a hill).

Great place to see in Carlsbad NM. People are helpful and the desert is awesome. Nice selection of animals for being not a zoo.
