Not a corporate chain bookstore; quite the opposite. The Bryn Mawr Bookstore is one of the charming and undiscovered old Cambridge locations favored by the locals. The store is run by alumnae for the benefit of Bryn Mawr College. (Bryn Mawr College is one of the Seven Sisters, a group of colleges in New England.) This is the place to go if you are looking for a quiet place to reflectively peruse books. Stepping off the bus on to Huron Avenue is like walking out of a time machine into a more peaceful period in American history.
Great place to find amazing books! Very peaceful atmosphere with an outstanding staff. Very organized. Great prices. Glad I found this place.
Anyplace you can get a copy of the complete works of Oscar Wilde thats almost a century old for less than three figures has to be pretty awesome. The sci-fi section has some classics (Vinge! Van Vogt! Clarke!) and some new books mixed in. Its one shelf, but its got a surprising range. The fiction section is vast and well stocked (to someone who only dips in occasionally, anyway). The science and math sections are small, and dont always have something interesting, but theres enough turnover for a thorough search to be rewarding. Ive found some gems in there -- mostly historical interest, but Ive found enough to be extremely entertaining.
A wonderful collection of treasures is hidden behind the doors of this store. A group of volunteers runs the store beautifully. You may want to consider coming here if youre looking for a precious edition, something unique to read.
Used books and a few other used items. The nice thing about the books here is that they are relatively intellectual content because of the nice neighborhood and because of the Cambridge connection to Harvard and MIT. The books here are not all super cheap but there are certainly bargains here. Sales here all benefit the Bryn Mawr college scholarship fund.
The best prices around very friendly staff. Great non profit too part of book proceeds go to college scholarships. they accept donations from customers and you can get a income tax rebate slip with your book donations! They also hold books for you.Tim
Great for used books and friendly conversation. Also that all proceeds go to financial aid for students. Will be back.
Interesting selection of books. Helpful volunteer staff. Benefits scholarships for students.
Lots of unusual books for very good prices. Every month they have a certain genre half off as well, making their prices even better. The staff are all volunteers, and very kind. Plus it goes to scholarships for Bryn Mawr college in PA.My favorite section is the science section. Theyre close to Harvard and MIT so the donated science books are great. They have an impressive selection on local ecology, so if you are looking for a good book for someone new to the area Id recommend getting them something about the local wildlife or ecology. My other favorite section is the poetry section. The poetry section is amazing, the largest one Ive ever seen. Even if you dont read poetry you should really check it out. Its really quite good, plus poetry often has the benefit of being short so if you hate it, well its half over!If you come by be aware they only take cash or check, no credit cards. Parking can be tight on the weekends (its still Cambridge), but there is a bus stop that goes right there and that bus leaves from Harvard which is very easy to get to from all the major commuter rails. I used to take a Blue Bike (the rentable ones) there after work, as there is a stop a few blocks up.If you want to see which genre is on sale this month check out their Facebook page! They also post their hours on there, so if youre concerned theyre closed (which they are only open a few days a week) you should check there.I mean Im biased, I bought 15+ books from them last month because the science section was on sale, but I cannot recommend this store enough. Please, please wear your mask though if they ask! The volunteers are all very kind, but as a rule rather older.
Perfect little bookstore in a perfect little village tucked away from the cranky bustle of life.
Used book store like they used to be -- some dusty old stuff no one wants, occasional great finds, and everything in between. Your purchase benefits Bryn Mawr College.
