I love this consignment shop! Its organized well and had a great selection of furs. The owner was kind enough to let me put one on hold with a small down payment and I look forward to returning to shop again soon! :)

This store is very organized. I love how it also sells some accessories. There isnt a ton of room in the store but they make it work, I think. I have purchased some small gifts and also separates for work and more casual clothes a few times and the brands are always good quality. Rarely does something cost more than $20.

I stopped at Back on the Rack (consignment shop) in Hamden, Connecticut about 6 months ago to ask how things worked if one wanted to consign. I was told the rules and regulations but when I asked if there was anything in writing that I could take with me to read, I was told no, there were no extra copies.Fast forward to recently when I brought in some items to be consigned. After they were accepted I was given a scrap of paper and told to write my name, address and phone number on it which I did. This was wooden clothes-pin clipped to the items. I asked if there wasnt a written contract which would include the date I was leaving the items, a list and descriptions of the items, and information about what percentage of sale price would be received if an item was sold, or when those that did not sell could be picked up (time frame). I was handed a sheet of paper with printed information that would take about 5 minutes to read. When I started to take it I was told that it was the only copy they had and I could not have it. (Sounds like what happened 6 months prior.) I asked for a piece of paper and was given a scrap about 4 x 4 inches. I wrote down what was being consigned and asked if I was going to receive a customer number. I was given one which was written on my scrap of paper after the staff person input information into the computer. For my self-interest I took photos of the items on the counter that were consigned..Anyone in business reading this may be as perplexed as I was/am about how this business is being run. However, I decided to see this through. I will write another review after the period of time (40 days? 45 days?) passes and I stop to pick up unsold items and/or receive money (cash, check? mailed/must pick up?). Yes, of course I had a choice to not leave my items but I was/am curious to see how this unfolds. But how can a consignment business take items from a customer and not give them a written receipt in some form stating what the agreement is between the consignor and consignee, and not a verbal, rattled off at warp speed, description? How can the consignee prove what they consigned when they pick-up unsold items or expect payment for sold items? How can the Back on the Rack attorney and/or accountant allow these unprofessional business practices to continue? This review is based on the initial contact with the business on Whitney Avenue, Hamden, Connecticut.Perhaps when I return in 40 or 45 days, there will be agreements to be given to future consignees with descriptions of items left, when items might go on Sale, the pick-up period if items are not sold, etc. to be signed, dated, and with a copy for the store and the person leaving things - everything clearly spelled out so there is absolutely no ambiguity. Perhaps. Look for a follow-up review.
