Shout out to Scott Monohan for measuring my feet and fitting me properly for an AT set up! He gave me the assurance I needed that I will be comfy in my new boots this year!! Thank you!!
Michael was so amazing! When I told himI was coming from out of state he took the time to pull out a map and show me what seemed to be everything about climbing/hiking and gave me a ton of amazing advice. He also showed me around to a bunch of the museum stuff they have around the store and told me the amazing stories behind them. I came in looking for a helmet and ended up staying an hour and could not be more grateful for the hospitality. Cameron also checked me out and was super friendly as well! He gave me some cool podcasts to check out on my drive! This is an amazing store with great energy. Wish I was a local so I could keep coming back.
Went in for new hiking boots. 1500+ miles on old ones.Excellent selectionZack was huge help in sorting through options and testing out several pairs.Found a pair that fit great and felt perfect on incline/decline test.Already have 30 miles on the new pair and loving them.
Neptune Mountaineering is the place to go if you need any climbing, hiking, or ski touring gear! Their staff is super knowledgeable and clearly passionate about all those sports - which is greatly appreciated when you’re looking for some gear guidance. We’ve purchased a trad rack here, climbing rope, and a bunch of other supplies. Tim is the man, and has helped us numerous times with picking climbing gear.Neptune also houses Colorado Mountain School, which is a top notch guide service.Definitely our first stop when looking for high quality technical gear at a fair price 🤙
Was at this gem of a store Thursday 9/23/21. Tim helped my sister find an appropriate personal anchor for climbing and corresponding biners that she liked. He helped me in buying a small piece of trad gear called a ball nut. Knowledgeable staff and all the mountaineering gear you could need and then some!
Amazing customer service! We came for my husbands NTN (telemark) boots which where fitted by Ann. In the meantime I bought Bedrock sandals and also received amazing customer service by a knowledgeable and attentive female employee. We live in Minnesota and made this part of our vacation as Neptune is known for their back country equipment which we couldn’t find in MN. Truly impressed!
This store is beyond amazing and not just a store! They have a carefully curated museum-quality collection of historical artifacts and stories from the outdoors, including disciplines of skiing, mountaineering, rock climbing, and more. And, the retail part of the story itself is well laid out, functional, incredible range of high quality inventory, and items that are expertly picked to not waste your time with sub-par or just ordinary gear. The service is also top-notch and it was a pleasure to visit this store on our weekend trip to climb in the Boulder area.
This store rocks! All of the staff is super friendly, and there is so much gear to choose from. I am very grateful for Zachs and Chloes help finding the right harness for me.
Plenty of mountaineering, camping, skiing, and rock climbing gear! Small, museum-quality displays on Mt. Everest, skiing, etc. Nice indoor bouldering setup for testing equipment on the spot. Friendly staff, though not always knowledgeable on the gear varieties. And, most items seem more expensive than what can be found online.
I bought some climbing shoes at Neptune in June and already after several months there is a hole in the front of the left shoe with normal wear and tear. Neptune wouldn’t let me exchange the shoes and didn’t offer any help with the manufacturer warranty (there is indeed a 1 year manufacturer warranty). I really want to support local businesses but won’t be shopping Neptune any longer as I know the big box outdoor shop would have taken these shoes back no questions asked.
Neptune Mountaineering ! As a business they honor their customers! Their customer service is phenomenal ! And they just took care of me on a warranty deal ! And went above and beyond they have phenomenal products particularly boots ! And I personally want to think Erin Cox for going to bat for me and going above and beyond ! I will personally send anyone and everyone I ever meet to them you just cant go wrong with lowa bootsIf you want the best you go to Neptune mountaineering
As a beginner I came into Neptune looking for climbing gear. I bought climbing shoes that were too tight, and after talking to an expert climbing friend and re-evaluating went back for an exchange to a size larger. Geoff and Cameron were great and took care of me. This is why you go to the local place, for service like this.
Standout shop. Excellent selection and inventory of gear, and very knowledgeable staff that can help you select the right gear. I appreciated Tegans knowledge and Camerons excellent customer service.
Locals with the best gear. Had what we needed and so friendly.
Its been around forever, so employees tend to know the gear and a good deal about local climb/hike/ski areas. Although it goes through phases of being an amazing store or only okay. Sometimes you encounter grumpy/snappy employees.
Staff is helpful, friendly/courteous and knowledgeable.Store is clean.Check out is quick.Go check it out
I live on the east coast at any time I come to Colorado and make it a point to stop in here as they have such a great selection and are locally owned. Highly recommend.
WOW is all I can say. Way over priced and was at the store 25 min and nobody even said a word to me. So if you are wearing work clothes and are a little dirty be aware that they think you have no money so they wont help you. Trust me this place is for millionaires. You can get the same stuff online for way cheaper.
I just wanted to let everyone that this store is outstanding! They have a great selection of top notch mountaineering gear. Shout out to Michael and John for getting nordic bindings mounted on our new skis on such short notice. I know it wasnt easy to squeeze us in during the holiday rush, but we really appreciate it. You guys are top notch; thanks for the great service !
I bought a guidebook here for $40, it was not what I was looking for unfortunately, was not allowed to return it 12 hours later. That no return policy is really unfair, I am a very dissatisfied customer. I flipped through the book once and had the receipt and everything. Maybe they should warn people of that policy when checking out... As a poor college student, it really sucks to be out that money. Will not be coming back here.
This is my happy place! Very helpful and friendly staff!
Awesome store. Awesome people. Will def shop here again.
Super cool outfitter with a little cafe attached! My boyfriend and I are traveling from Michigan and he needed a better pair of hiking shoes for breathability. Tim was super helpful and even gave us some advice on where to hike. We even came back for some hiking pants the next day to splurge a bit. Highly recommend!
I wasn’t always aware of how awesome Neptune is. When I first arrived in Boulder it seemed like a “locals” REI. How wrong I was. This place is a specialty store for EVERYONE. Each of their employees has been friendly. Knowledgeable. And their recommendations have always been spot on. They have brands and gear you won’t see elsewhere. They have a cool rewards program. Did I mention the awesome gear? Go check it out - as your first stop, not your last.
One stop shop for all of your climbing gear needs at a reasonable price
Best selection of mountaineering gear on the front range
One star for any company who uses FedEx for shipment of their online purchases. Since there is no recourse or ability to hold FedEx accountable for their awful and always problematic delivery service, we need to start holding accountable the companies who choose to use them for their shipments. They are never on time, always delayed, with no ability to accurately track your package or get ahold of anyone. In this day and age, there’s no reason any package (a couple states away) should take 1-1.5 weeks for delivery and not have real-time tracking updates. UPS (and even USPS- that’s saying a lot) do a better job. Buy your products from companies who understands this.
I have lived in Boulder on and off for nearly 10 years before I finally made it to Neptune. Not sure what took me so long, they have a great selection and staff that make the experience very comfortable. Sammy was super helpful when I went in to pick out climbing shoes and made sure I got in the right pair. She was very patient and knowledgeable and I left the store feeling great about my purchase, especially once I got to the gym and got in my gear. Thanks Sammy!
I have come into this store three times and everytime people on the floor and at the repair shop have been remarkably helpful. Cant thank them enough. Three different people took the time to problem solve with me and come up with possible gear solutions to seemingly unsolvable needs. Knowledgeable, patient and kind. Thank you Neptune, you all rock.
Amazing customer service. My wife and I both have had boot fits there. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
I have been going to Neptune for years buying things like climbing gear, ski repairs, and new ski boots fitted to my feet.
Super friendly and knowledgeable staff
I ordered a pair of skis off the website. They were shipped immediately, and I received them the next day. I couldnt be happier with the level of service! Thanks Neptune!
A Boulder institution! I remember once seeing the knife that Simon Yates used, as well as a number of items from Anderl Heckmair.History aside, the employees are friendly, knowledgeable, they have a great selection of gear of a wide variety of outdoor pursuits, & they ship. Oh yeah, I really needed an item (green Totem cam that no-one else seemed to have) ASAP for a trip- without paying (or specifying; didnt want to pay that much more, ha ha) for expedited shipping, I received the item the NEXT DAY!! (granted, I live on the other side of the Denver metro area, & I wouldnt expect that, but WOW!!)Really happy to have this as a local shop- there are very few climbing shops that compare.
Phenomenal brick-and-mortar outdoor store. Superior to REI in that: staff are significantly more knowledgeable on respective offerings. In addition, Colorado Mountain School is housed here too so in-house experts for classes...etc as well. This store has both breadth and depth of offerings (eg. massive selection of climbing guidebooks). This is also a great venue for speakers and events and they are offered frequently here. Last but not least, the cafe is great. Very sunny area to work/read and have some food and drink (both alcoholic and non). Coffee is from Ampersand roasters (great stuff) and they usually have 2 different brews available.
For starters, yes great selection, great products helpful staff when you have questions. However having to go through anything that involves managers, a warranty, a refund...its a total unorganized cluster. Disappointed in our experience with having to work with them regarding a warranty (in which fischer couldnt replace and or repair ...totally fine), every person has been reluctant to help, blaming it on someone else, it has been 2 months....still no refund, jumping around to staff (aka the store manager couldnt help...seems odd) really frustrating for something that should be simple. Still awaiting a refund and someone who can help...have talked to atleast 4 people...now awaiting to talk to someone else....
Staff are all very friendly and helpful, but unfortunately the stores offerings are not so great anymore. Three times this week Ive called or gone in asking for different items or services and theyve told me to go to Bentgate Mountaineering in Golden. They dont have a proper regulator to fill airbag canisters. They also no longer carry any splitboard gear, even though they would be the only game in town if they did. One employee said to me, Yeah, Im not sure why we dont carry splitboard gear anymore. When half a dozen people come in every day asking for ice cream, you should probably start selling ice cream.
Met the founder Gary Neptune who gave a brief history lesson on old climbing gear!
Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Great indoor climbing wall.
Okay, so yesterday my boyfriend and I went into Neptune to buy a first timers harness and climbing shoes. We truly didn’t know much at all about finding appropriate gear and how things should fit. That’s when we met Tim. First off I would like to say that he is truly a stand up guy! He went over and beyond to help us figure out shoe sizing and where we needed to be. He was extremely attentive and not your typical help. We will definitely be back. THANK YOU TIM!!! WE LOVE YOU!
Been in multiple times and staff is never excited to help me, makes it seem like I’m a bother and they don’t say thank you. Only some staff are knowledgeable about products. Prices more expensive than elsewhere.
Great resource for climbing and mountaineering gear, as well as maps, guide books, and training guides. Great collection of outdated climbing gear and mountaineering photos and stories. Its almost like a mini museum!
I had an appointment to buy backcountry boots. I was told I wasnt going to find was I was looking for because I didnt use my common sense to buy ski boots because were almost in may. I walked out and wondered if the term-customer service-is even a thing anymore. Lost a customer for life.
The staff is always super helpful, the selection of books and gear is great for a small store, and the live community events are always amazing. Highly recommend Neptune over REI when possible!
I cant recommend this place enough. Great, friendly staff and super knowledgeable.
Bought a pair of Oboz hiking boots after a recommendation from a Neptune Mountaineering employee — a year later I couldn’t be happier with how they are holding up and am super stoked that I stopped in and talked to that guy. Thank you!
Great place Ive been going here for 20 some odd years. The only problem is that currently they are a bit understaffed so getting help takes some time. Just make sure youre not in a rush and you will be good.
Unfortunately, I’ve had several experiences with other stores that I was not happy with as I received subpar assistance with finding hiking shoes. Came into Neptune as I was passing through Boulder, looking for hiking boots. As a beginner hiker, I wasn’t terribly sure of what to look for. Tao assisted me and was very friendly and helpful. Alaina was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable, even showed me lacing techniques to ensure proper shoe fitment. I ended up walking away with a great pair of hiking boots that fit me perfectly. Would definitely come here again when I’m in town.
Very cool store with a nice Cafe for coffee and snacks.
Fantastic place!
Great place to buy gear, with a beautiful store and expert staff.
I can’t say enough about how knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile the staff is here. I was on Broadway Ledge early in the season with an abundance of snow, unable to find rappels I needed, and no other parties around. I hadn’t planned to traverse Broadway looking for other rap stations or to make my way down Lamb’s Slide and knew I would likely spend the night there without some advice. When I realized I had some cell reception, I called the shop. I had been to plenty of the Thursday night presentations and chatted the staff up in the gear section to know they’d been up there and could probably help me out. Thanks to Jon Klothe whose beta got me down to Mills in one piece, and though I didn’t need to call back was willing to follow up until I found everything. This is just one reason I’ll always be a customer here, because experiences like this one show Neptune staff cares.
I feel as though the attitude has trimmed back and everyone seems genuiely helpful. I purchased AT boots; they assisted me in making the decision and properly fitting them. Also purchase bindings and mounted / tuned. Ski shop had really useful advise. The entire experience was excellent. Couple of years ago I spoke negatively of Neptune, I am speaking positively about Neptune moving forward and recommend them.
Great coffee in cafe, and gear in the store.
Thanks goes out to Alexander for helping me find the right pair of climbing shoes. I’m a new climber and I didn’t know much, but he spent the time to explain it to me. I would highly recommend Neptune to anyone!
Better climbing selection than REI plus its nice to support local.
This was my first experience with Neptune getting my skis mounted and only my second time in the store. I chose to bring my skis here because they specialize in AT set ups. I brought in my brand new skis and bindings on a Wednesday afternoon, and was told Friday at the earliest but no promises that the skis would be done by Friday. On my way home from work on Friday, I was going to be driving by Neptune, so I figured it wouldnt hurt to call and see if they were done. I explained I was just calling to check-- in the off chance-- that my skis would be done, and Michael responded very rudely Well if you didnt receive a call they probably arent done. He then proceeded to act annoyed that he had to go double check that they were in fact not done. After confirming this, he said again very rudely, when they are done, they will call. I was in no way angry that my skis werent done, even though I was hoping they would be. I was angry by the way I was talked to on the phone and it is no way a customer who chooses to spend money at your store should be talked to. Now I would like to say, the guy who worked on my skis was great and I have no complaints about the service that was done on my skis. But if that is the way I will be treated when I call to see if I can pick up my skis, I will 100% choose to spend my money elsewhere every time I need work done on my skis or need outdoor gear. Judging some of the other comments written with low reviews, poor attitude is a big problem at Neptune.
I went into Neptune today because I needed a small part for one of my AT ski bindings. I expected to have to order the part and wait a while for it to come in. But Eli in the service department totally hooked me up. He not only found the part I needed in the shop, he installed it for me on the spot all for no charge. The seminars and guest speakers at Neptune are really good as well. Great place!
Awesome shop! Fantastic stock and staff! Great programs! My only complaint is that they dont carry the Brush Wedge.
If you need hiking boots, Alexander is your man. He helped Goldilocks find just the right pair. Super knowledgeable, checked my foot size and width and made recommendations based on my foot shape and what I was using them for -- thank you!!
Definitely the best shop in town. Went in looking for my first pair of climbing shoes and Eli helped me out. He was really helpful and patient, ensuring I was well-versed in all of my options. Once I was in the neighborhood of a few pairs I liked, he really helped me dial in and nail the fit, which is so important. Can’t recommend the shop and Eli enough!
Neptune will be the only ski shop I go to in Boulder from now on. Chris really helped me out when I was in a bind and everywhere else turned me away. I get it - they are all backed up but Chris helped me out plus took extra time to teach me a bit about adjustments to my new Shift bindings so I can self-serve a bit if needed. 10/10 would recommend!
Awesome repair service!
Literally am on my way to Moose Jaw to buy a bag I discovered at Neptune because of the way I was treated by one of their staff. If helping customers, or even just people in general, is not your thing .....then get the heck out of retail! And I gave two stars because I am grateful for Neptune turning me on to this bag
Ann and Heather did an awesome job with my ski boot fit! I am 100% happy with my new AT boots and they feel great. Ann was super helpful offering a small adjustment (that worked!) after I took them out the first time. I am so happy to support my local shop and interact with the community rather than ordering online, and I am excited to learn this new sport!
The Gentleman who helped me was so familiar with what I was asking about, that I felt quite comfortable asking a whole lot of questions about lots of other projects I had brewing, and he offered several great solutions. He had lots of experience and ideas that I can try out. A great experience!
We love this place. My daughter recently got climbing shoes here and Alexander was patient, knowledgeable, and very helpful at meeting her specific needs for a comfortable shoe she could even grow a bit in! Thanks! Oh, and they have a great coffee shop and fun events, too!
The best place for all serious outdoor gear and experience. They also have great coffee and awesome presentations from the best in the world athletes. My go to place for the right gear.
I have had consistent, extremely professional interactions with multiple staff members in several different departments; Eli and Chris in the ski shop, Malcolm in climbing, as well as others. If you added up the years of outdoor experience of the people who staff this store, it would probably be in the hundreds. Five solid stars!
Old Neptune was so awesome and legendary. Then they slipped for a few years with new owners. And now (well, a year or so ago) theyre back with new owners, total renovation, etc. and the place is better than ever. Great selection and vibe. But what really makes it are the employees who know there stuff better than anyone! Such an awesome Boulder institution - support it!
The staff seemed really knowledgeable, Jon helped me get all the things I needed to go climbing out west. Amazing climbing shop. Huge selection of gear and at pretty good prices too. There’s also a lot of cool historical pieces around the store. I will be back.
I tried to return a book that I purchased, forgetting that I already had a copy at home. The book was in PERFECT condition. Despite that, Dan had told me that I was only eligible for an exchange or store credit. When I asked why, he informed me that someone could go home, read the book, gain all of the information from it, then return it, and due to the possibility of that, their policy was that there are no refunds for purchased books. It didn’t say that anywhere in the store, or on the digital receipt that I received.John (who I assume is a manager) explained that he would be willing to take care of me, and issue a refund, specifically because the book was in absolutely brand new condition. I’m grateful for that.Personally, I think the policy is accusatory in nature, and doesn’t represent the fabric of the outdoor industry (you can tell when an entire book has been read; pages will be ear-marked, spines cracked, rolling cover corners, etc.). In my experience and opinion, our community isn’t dishonest in a way that takes advantage of other people. The fact remains that Dan was just doing his job, and I appreciate that, and John was willing to reconcile an extenuating circumstance, and work with me. If you’re in Boulder, this place is worth the time and money. Their breadth of experience is enormous, their selections are huge, and they’re largely pretty rad folks.
Helpful and have everything I need for all types of climbing. Love supporting this business instead of giant corporations!
Love this place! Not only did they have amazing climbing gear, they have a cafe/bar area that’s awesome. I shopped with a draft beer one time and a latte with a festive tree in the foam (thanks Marisa!). Highly recommended!
Staff was super kind, friendly, and helpful. I enjoyed my experience.
Went in for some AT ski boot modifications and was helped by Ann (unsure of last name). Ann was highly knowledgeable and qualified along with just being fun to work with. Highly recommend Neptune for boot fitting and modifications!
Really enjoying the remodel that Neptune did last year. Their selection and knowledge is top notch. I was in last week, shopping for some new climbing gear, and Alex was super helpful in helping me make a decision. I will definitely be back.
Neptune Mountaineering has been abducted by aliens who like sterile environments, fancy lattes and lifestyle clothing. Bring back the quirky and experienced staff, the smell of wax and weed and old dude with the pony tail who served up wine to customers for free. Make Neptune weird again!
I went in to browse mountaineering and hiking boots and had an excellent experience with Allison. Her knowledge and experience helped me find some very good options and she even showed me how to tie a heel lock!
Good selection, knowledgeable staff.
The best dedicated mountaineering and climbing store in Colorado, and probably in the country. Great presentations and speakers too! Coming up on September 24, a speaker talking about the high altitude volcanoes of Mexico!
Kelly did a awesome job of getting me kitted out. He took his time, shared expertise, and helped me find the gear I needed. Neptune has a great selection for technical mountain gear and the new layout is beautiful. Great experience.
I had an issue with a pack- one the was my fault and I was looking to have it repaired. Chris ended up exchanging it for a new one when it turned out they didnt have the ability to repair it. This was way above and beyond and not at all expected. In fact I felt sort of guilty about this so I found something else to buy just to help support this great shop!
Great place to shop. look out for sale items
I want to give a shout out to Alexander for his enthusiasm in helping me find the right alpine backpack. He was patient and helpful as I tried on 5 different packs. We even went so far as to use equipment from the store to build a rack, grab shoes, harness, rope, etc so I could load the pack and be sure it was what I wanted. I was feeling overwhelmed with all the choices but left confident in the choice I made! Thanks Xander! Thanks Neptunes!!
This place has changed ownership recently, and has an amazing selection of gear! Besides climbing gear, theyve got a ton of new outdoors equipment, and a great selection of clothes from brands like Prana, Patagonia and more. Also, you can grab a coffee from their adjacent shop. Thats a win for me!Looking to learn to lead, trad climb or overall mountaineering? Colorado Mountain School has space in the store to conduct classes and prepare for outings.Check them out!!
Bret and Alexander, along w the rest of the Saturday morning staff went out of their way to help me today. Firstly, looking for new climbing shoes, then for my Subaru keys which I misplaced while shopping. The staff here went above and beyond today and I am proud to help support this local gem!
The go-to place for high end mountain gear and, more importantly, the expertise to go with it. I appreciated the time and skill in fitting me for ski boots and several great interactions with Gary himself. The historical museum is a wonderful bit of browsing fun as well. Other shops may suffice for run-of-the-mill gear, but Neptunes is the top.
Neptune is amazing. They have one of the best selections of mountaineering gear around. The store is large, clean, and the staff has tremendous expertise in what they are doing. The have a wall to test out rock climbing gear, and a good selection of mountaineering boots and ice tools. Love this place.
Got some wonderful help today from a nice young lady named Molly. Im just getting into rock climbing and Molly was extremely friendly and took her time to really get me set up right. A wonderful customer service experience. Thanks Molly and Neptune Mountaineering!
Wow! One of the best gear stores I have ever been to! It is like a museum! If you love climbing, or the mountains Neptune is a must if you are in the area! Extremely knowledgeable staff, and huge selection of anything climbing or mountain related.
**Update - The owner & a manager reached out and asked if there was anything they could do to make the situation right, which I really appreciated & respected. Until this point, my experience with Neptune has been extremely disappointing, and I hope this is a better representation of the store as a whole than my (& others) previous experiences.Apparently they do, in fact, now (or did?, I still dont really know) have a 30 day return policy on unused items. This has been a very confusing process.**Original:*Dont be fooled, this is one of the worst mountaineering stores Ive ever been to. In short, the staff is rude, the prices are absurd, they dont keep to their word, and they are a disappointment to the outdoor community.First, the staff is not always knowledgeable and can be incredibly misleading. My first experience in there, I was told I needed a new snowboard because my 158 was wayy too long for a 170lb, 6 man and that I needed something around 150. This is complete nonsense. Please train your staff if youre going to have them sell overpriced gear. That brings me to my next point. Their gear selection for most outdoor sports is sub par, and they will steer you to the highest priced items if you let them. Dont believe them!! You can find this gear significantly cheaper at other local retail shops, and even cheaper yet online if you arent super interested in supporting local. Im talking 20-40% cheaper most of the time.Lastly, they will not stand by the overpriced gear they sell, nor hold their word. I was naively convinced that I should just purchase clothing (ski pants & puffy) and that, as long as you dont wear it or remove tags, you can bring it back within 30 days and let us know, even though we technically dont have a written return policy. Apparently trusting them was a horrible idea, because 600 dollars later they laughed and said they dont take anything back when I tried to return. This company is a disgrace to the Boulder community and outdoor community as a whole. They rip people off, and then dont stand by their gear after they do it. Go to REI even if you have to. Youll save money, have a better selection, be able to make returns, and have a guarantee on your gear. Dont waste your time with this nonsense.
I wandered in needing climbing shoes, Dan Hare was tremendously patient showing me no less than 10 different shoes before I found a good fit. Tremendous man, awesome store. Wish they had a place like this in my home town.
It was crowded...ya! Good for the new owners, they have brought back good employees and actually have inventory that people want. Gary should be happy...I enjoy talking with him when he is there... Boulder is more Boulder-like because of Neptune
Great shop with lots of product and a great staff knowledge. Bought boots here this winter and they are the best ski boots Ive ever had. Ask for Elaine, super friendly, asks the right questions, knows her stuff.
Neptune has been around a long time and was in decline for years with almost no stock and employees Who clearly should not be in retail and it smelled like an old closet. It’s been purchased recently and is a completely different store with friendly staff and good inventory. They’re boot fitting is very good and that’s the only place I go now. The staff is very knowledgeable and actually do the sports like climbing and skiing. Maybe I’ll give it five stars next year.
Nice people
