Epitome of Bloomington charm/weirdness. Good for them for being over the top bold in decorating. Pretty good chocolate cream cheese muffin. In a basement with low ceiling, uncomfortable for tall guys, and bathroom is even more so. Shares building with a record store and Laughing Planet-- enjoy coffee and a burrito at the same time.

I appreciate a coffee house that gets creative with its menu, and Soma has a great list of specialty drinks to compliment the standard coffee options. Bonus: Lots of their coffees are fair trade and juices are all organic. It looks like customers are welcome to get cozy and hang out, but the interior is very dark. So if that’s not your thing, there’s plenty of outdoor seating with cafe tables and picnic benches.

I used to come here all the time when I lived near Bloomington and I loved the vibe. I was in the area (ie 3 hours away and made the extra drive haha) so I stopped by yesterday and this morning and the coffee is still amazing.The staff were all super friendly and answered all my questions. My friend ordered a single shot of espresso on ice and they offered to give him an extra shot for free which I thought was nice.Theyve taking good health safety precautions by removing all the tables and seating inside and leaving hand sanitizer by the front door. They do have tables outside and have signs indicating whether theyve been sanitized between customers which I thought was really nice.They do request that customers wear masks inside but they didnt turn away customers that werent wearing masks.Im so sad I live so far away from soma but I will definitely make an effort to stop by any time Im nearby.

Always super friendly and helpful. I had forgotten my mask in the car, and they provided me one without fuss. Also, they are great at suggesting alternatives and customizing your drink on request.

Cozy little basement coffee shop with a quiet room in the back to plug up your laptop and charge your phone while you study or read. The the espresso drinks are good, but the flavor of the coffee was better years ago, so something has changed. As I stated the coffee is still good. Some of the baristas put more care, into your drink than others. Overall a refreshing break from corporate Starbucks. Between me and you, they must do something about that bathroom, but it is functional.

Best cafe in Bloomington staffed by some of the nicest folks around. Shame that Laughing Planet was run into the ground, as there was little better than grabbing a burrito and eating it in the map covered back room here before going over to TDs for that hard to find CD or LP. Still, no stop in Bloomington is complete until you swing into Soma for a Dr. Ds or a Swamp Thing.

Cozy little place downtown. Please work on your juice/smoothie flavors; strawberry banana shouldnt taste like apple.

Walking Cappuccino with Almond Milk. 2 shots. Decently priced. Decently tasting. Also got a tasty chocolate something-a-rather that was good. Ill have to test you soma. Also get some cashew milk.

I absolutely love this coffee shop! Ive been coming here over a year now, and Id choose it over Starbucks any day. The prices are roughly the same, but Im always going to choose local over a worldwide chain.They have a wide variety of house drinks as well. Ive tried many of their lattes, the Peanut Butter Cup O Joe latte is delicious, but better hot. Their Razz-Ma-Tazz latte (raspberry and dark chocolate) is also very good, but better when iced. My personal favorite is the Lewinsky, which is coconut, caramel, and vanilla, and I think it tastes amazing cold or hot. It keeps me warm when its snowing, and its really refreshing when its hot outside.Pre-covid, the atmosphere was super cozy and welcoming, and was a great place to catch up with friends, or get some work done.Post-covid, theyve removed all their tables inside to allow for plenty of social distancing, all their employees wear their masks at all times, and theyve put heaters outside to allow for outdoor gatherings if you still want to meet up with friends.Overall, I love coming here any time, and I bring my friends and family any time theyre in town!

Generally a great coffee shop with interesting combos. The staff is generally pretty nice but most of them have a tendency to be a little short and rude, but not always! I recommend their smoothies, the raz-ma-taz and the swamp thing! The latter is an odd combo drink but a must try if you are interested in a new drink!

Maybe when your customer takes their mask of for a split second to try the coffee they just added cream and honey to, you don’t tell them to keep their mask on inside and that indoor dining is not offered here. Won’t be going back.

The staff has always been great here. All of their drinks are very tasty. Even non-coffee drinkers can find delicious drinks. I personally recommend everything off of their specialty drinks. My favorite though is the Razz-Ma-Tazz cold. It is razzberry flavored with dark chocolate crumbs.

I absolutely love their coffee.Its been a year since I first had their coffee and it still remains my go to coffee shop. Highly recomend the Top of The Morning, extra sweet with whip cream! And it comes hot or with ice. Both r good. I alternate between them.

I ordered the Chocolate Raspberry Coffee with whipped cream. Very good! Friendly service. I gave it 4 stars because my coffee was not hot at all. 3 of us ordered the same thing and none of us had a hot drink. Warm at the most.

Best coffee in town. They also have healthy fresh juice alternatives. Friendly staff. Mellow environment with a great location. Im sad theyve removed a lot of their chairs and couches which set it apart from other coffee shops.

Great vegan options and great hours. There are some items that are listed as vegan on the website but not in the store. I would love it if they could be more consistent with the labeling though. Im not vegan but I love supporting the market for vegan alternatives! The pastries and coffee are all right, nothing super special but are decent enough, and most of the muffins are huge! For the cons, the lighting is very poor in this store, and I feel like the scones (which are delicious) have recently gotten a lot smaller in size. Also not a fan of the plastic wrap they use on the pastries.

The PB Cup of Joe is my favorite decadent coffee drink - chocolatey and packed with real, organic peanut butter. Despite the high quality, the prices seem a bit steep for this area. This location is not the best for studying as it is a bit dark and often crowded. Happy hour, with half price espresso drinks is from 3-4pm!

Ive only ever had burnt coffee & lattes here. Unfortunately, every time I go, its money down the drain. Im not sure if its because theyre not cleaning their machines, but my experiences have been unfortunate with respect to the coffee and espresso quality, to say the least.

Great coffee but not much for a chill environment because of the layout and lack of space. Happy hour from 3 to 4 is excellent. Dr. Ds tonic in the winter months (1/4 slice of beet added) will sooth the weary soul. 4.25 stars.

Cozy hole in the wall atmosphere with the best specialty drinks in Bloomington. Perfectly fits the college atmosphere, from the indie music to unique interior design. Located right off Kirkwood, its location is as convenient as possible! Definitely recommend to any coffee lover!

My daughter who goes to IU loves Soma. I had the specialty coffee dark chocolate mocha with whipped cream. Though it was going to be too sweet but the coffee flavor came through really well. Will definitely go here next time I visit. Much better than that big chain place nearby. Shop is in the semi basement but is funky and cool.

Nice place all around. Has a nice atmosphere and a usually comfortable vibe. The only problem I ever had was that they seem to make the back room a haven for the homeless at night which are usually drunk and noisy.

The espresso drinks are always perfectly prepared. Service is also friendly and timely.There have been a couple times when the baked goods have been a bit stale, but most of the time theyre fine.

Soma is Bloomingtons classic coffee shop. It provides a hip, unique atmosphere that creates an inviting experience for anyone wanting to study or hang out. They have many flavorful coffee choices. I definitely recommend the Peppermint Patty or Razz-Ma-Tazz. In addition, they offer many vegan pastries, and non-dairy milks like almond and cashew. Their smoothies are also fantastic, and they also provide freshly squeezed juice.

Try the PB&J smoothie. Sounds gross, but tastes amazing! They have many vegan options (like the cosmic muffin, which is pretty great as well).

One of the best coffee shops in town, in my opinion. Nothing beats this place, Id go here over Starbucks any day if it were in a better location.

Staff are always really personable and relaxed in my opinion, quality drinks (I quite enjoy the chaikoffski), great atmosphere when theres not too many people but its often busy :( if that happens to be the case Ill usually take my drink elsewhere to study. I wish they would put all the options up like they used to have on the board ;( theres a new board with a lot less displayed.

I keep telling myself I wont come back here, but then I come here to meet people, and every time I regret it a little more. How can a place so bad be so popular? Terrible ambiance, bad food options, and most of all, strangely, oddly, weirdly, *consistently* rude staff.In addition to just generally unpleasant music, you may get to hear some music with really explicit lyrics. Not just cursing -- think more creatively. Im thinking, its not *that* late, I could have been stopping by with my young kids to enjoy the vegan offerings...I *love* independent coffee shops, but this one is so far below standard that Id rather have another Starbucks.

Coffee didnt taste good

Stopped in for coffee and a sweet something after spending the day touring IU and before making the drive home. So glad I didnt miss this during my visit. Cute and quirky place...would be fun to hang out inside and enjoy your favorite coffee or smoothie, but we got our to go. Service was friendly and fast. Smoothie was top rate, as was my double shot Latte and two vegan cookies. I imagine that if I was a student at IU, I would spend a significant amount of my coffee money here!

Lovely rainy summer morning spent at the best coffee house in Bloom. I have sipped upon luscious caffeinated beverages from this quaint little establishment oodles of times. I have probably spent more time here than home at certain periods of my life. The atmosphere is low key, vintage vibez, low ceilings (seriously, watch your head) old typewriters, quirky postcards, a very heavy door, Elvis watches you pee, and clown fish become your friends. The baristas are kind and knowledgeable. The prices are locally fair. The smoothies and juices are as fresh as they can be, with an abundant variety of different fruits and veggies and proteins to make up your perfect healthy delicacy. A select few bakery items share a wall with King Kong and a couple clowns. Besides the main ordering area, there is also a cozy, quieter back room, perfect for studying or reading a classic horror novel. There is a special comfy angular yellowing chair in the corner you should sit in and get lost in your favorite horror novel.P.S. please satisfy your hunger up the spiral stairs to Laughing Planet, and buy your vinyl downstairs. For what it is, which is definitely not specialty coffee, SOMA excels at being just one slight step above starbucks. The espresso bar is marginally better than the aforementioned chain, and that is why Im giving it four stars. The interior is a little dank and primitive, but the seating outside is fantastic.

I love the ambiance and product at Soma but their customer service needs some improvement. After a lengthy wait for my $7 coffee drink, I mentioned that I had forgotten to ask for whipped cream and could I please get a bit added to the top. The abrupt answer was No. Thats an extra charge. Ill be going to The Pourhouse from now on.
