Very nice selection of stuff and I showed up at 15 min til close, asked a guy if it was too late to buy a used amp they had, and he said naw man you got time come on and he even helped me load it up! Its was a 68 band master and weighed 987000 pounds too. It was very nice I thought. Very different than experiences at other places. Also the amp was very well cleaned and the right things left alone and the right ones replaced. I got a very detailed written list of what had been done and which parts were replaced etc....It sounds great.im definitely going back next time Im around Memphis.
Went in a few weeks ago to purchase my first guitar. Everyone was very helpful and more than willing to help me out. Glad to have this store in my neighborhood.
Best guitar shop on the planet, IMHO. Get to know Don, Mark, Harold and everyone else. Great place to learn about guitars and get treated fairly......just dont practice for an hour and never buy anything. Its kinda rude! Excellent prices and quality inventory. They are happy to work with you on trade, layaway, whatever you need. Whether you buy/trade $500 guitars or $2000+ guitars, youll be treated with respect. Just remember to show some respect in order to receive some respect!
Got me a nice banjo there and ppl are very nice
Always great... knowledgeable associates, the best musicians friendly music store and the best prices..
Got a good deal on a used Vox guitar amp. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I fully intend to return.
Staff very knowledgeable. Looking forward to going back Monday to see if I can trade my mandolin for an acoustic electric guitar Ive been looking for.
Highland music is a Birmingham staple, vintage guitars, good contemporary guitars and always willing to answer your questions, all I got was strings, but spent 45 min just looking around
Ive been buying all of my strings and gear from Highland for the past 6 years. Don and the fellas that run that shop are always welcoming and really knowledgeable. They really make you feel at ease and genuinely want you to get the most out of your music.I bought my first lap steel at Highland and Ill always be thankful to have such a great shop that I can support.
Fantastic shop, good prices, nice used variety, knowledgeable and helpful.
This is this best music store anywhere around. Cool vintage stuff, and more knowledge in a couple guys than twice the guitar center staff. Killer luthier work as well!
Still the place where musicians can hang out and be understood--it really is a special art form, and these guys that run Highland music know their stuff. Theyre also very Community oriented in terms of letting you know whos performing & where. Their music history and Birmingham history knowledge really is pretty vast.
Absolutely awesome!!! Let Harold work on your guitar!
Great group of guys working there. I had a good time talking to them and I enjoyed their selection of guitars.
This review is for Harold, I had dropped my guitar off at another shop in homewood and it sat for four weeks without getting done, I wanted a bone nut, saddle and set up, needless to say I picked it up from there and took it to highland, Harold got my guitar on Tuesday and gave it back on Thursday playing better than when it was brand new! Absolutely awesome work, awesome speed and he was very friendly and helpful through the entire process, all my guitars will be coming to him for any of my luthier needs!
Don, Doug, and Mark are all great guys and knowledgeable about all pieces that they carry. It’s a gem of a music shop that takes you back in time. They still offer layaway for instruments with 20% down and Their Amp tech Sam is the best in the biz.
Guys in the store were knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful.
After checking out every music store in the Birmingham area I found Highland Music to have the coolest atmosphere and selection of guitars. I fell in love with a vintage archtop here and Don agreed to a very reasonable price after seeing how much I enjoyed playing it. I left feeling completely satisfied with my purchase. This is my top choice in Birmingham and I will definitely be coming back.
I’ve had a few encounters with highland music and every time it’s been a great experience. The guys there are super knowledgeable, friendly and open minded. They just did some work on my vintage Bassman and I couldn’t be more happy with their work! For any and all things musical I highly recommend their service.
Always have what in looking for and so friendly.
Pretty darn rude staff, including the owner, Don. After 40 years in business I guess theyve earned the right, though.
Hard to imagine this town without Highland Music. It seems like its been here forever, and it impresses on so many levels. Need a tech? See Harold. Need a custom-built amp or guitar? They can fix you up here. Want a new Fender or Gibson? They have that. Need lightly used gear? It abounds here. Strings, parts, accessories...all the stuff you need, they have. This is THE place traveling musicians stop by when they are in town, and theres a reason for that. You should shop there, too.
Great store!
I love Highland Music. Have only had the greatest service and merchandise, consistently, the whole 15 yrs of being a HM customer! Guitar lessons were one on one with a very attentive guitar instructor. 5-Stars!
This is a great place with TRUE music lovers who are so knowledgeable about their craft--instruments, local artists/acts, Birmingham stories--so.much.great history here in addition to great quality instruments, notices of upcoming concerts-- you feel like youve stepped into a artists world set apart! I get my sons gift certificates here as he upgrades and swaps guitars.
Highland only deals in awesome. Their selection of high-quality new and vintage instruments, amps, and effects is second-to-none in Birmingham. And Sams amps and amp repair are top notch.
Great place and good prices. Music lessons as well. Definitely a place to check out for any music lover of any age. Staff are highly knowledgeable.
Great selection of vintage gear!
Owner was very helpful. I was looking for a pair of drum sticks. He was kind and explained that this was a 🎸 shop. Occasionally may acquire drumming items. I appreciated his honesty and kindness. Purchased 2 pairs.
Good guys!!! Experienced/knowledgeable. Great inventory.
I just bought my next workhorse from Highland Music, and am very pleased with the process! Don was very helpful and chose to stay an extra 30 mins after closing to get a guitar ready for me to take home. Next time I need to make a serious purchase I will go to Highlands first, because they are the best.
An excellent selection.
Ive been frequenting Birmingham-area music shops for about fifteen years now and Highland has become my go-to. Terrific place to buy music gear, particularly guitar-related stuff. Acoustics, electrics, strings, straps, picks, effects pedals, amps, everything. They also have electric basses, bass amps, PA gear, a selection of TAB and sheet music, and parts for guitars and basses. Also, its the only local place I know of that has a selection of vintage instruments and amps. Really cool stuff. This is the only place that I take my guitars and amps to for repair. Though Ive never taken lessons here and I cant speak for all of the teachers, I do know one them and Ive seen him teach. Hes thoughtful and patient with his beginners, and hes a heck of a player. The thing I like the most about this place is that most of the time youll be dealing directly with the owner. This is not a chain stores where you end up talking to someone who hasnt got a clue about gear. The staff here have decades of combined experience and know their stuff.
Awesome. Very reasonable. If you are selling online...halt. Highland music takes used gear and offer great used gear buys. Thanks again Highland music!!
This review is specifically for Harold, the instrument technician.I have brought two instruments to Harold over the past five years. The first was an odd ES-335 knock off. Harold did a solid job making it playable. Low action. No buzzing. Everything I asked for.Today, however, I picked up my Fender Jazz Bass. I have never, in my entire life, played an instrument that plays as well as this bass. This is no exaggeration. I’m a fourth generation guitarist and second generation bassist. My uncle was a luthier and a guitar tech. My closest friends are musicians and I’ve played countless instruments.I’ve read online that Harold works magic on Fender instruments and I completely agree with this. He is a setup magician and I will forever be returning here for as long as Harold is around. And if he goes elsewhere I am going to track him down.
Really nifty place.
Great selection, very reasonable prices. Picked up a wonderful amp at a price that cant be beat. Highest recommendation!
Twice treated very rudely by staff. Im over it.
Don and his staff are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. If you love vintage guitars, basses and amps, you must spend time in this shop. If you need gear maintenance, you need to know Higland Music. Custom builds, well known brands, affordable instruments and amps for beginner and advanced players as well as high end selections that probably should be in a museum but instead can be played. I will be back.
My kinda music store. Classic amps and guitars. Helpful staff
I guess they have some unique items which is cool but the folks behind the counter really seemed like they were annoyed to put their conversation on hold in order to help me and were also EXTREMELY condescending and pretentious. Im a fairly experienced musician and these guys spoke to me as if I was completely ignorant and always would be.
Large selection of musical instruments. The store did not have what I was looking for. However, the courteous staff kindly directed me to another local store that had what I needed. Now thats customer service!
Its a pretty chill place. I should know too since Im inheriting it one day (I wish haha)
I went to Highland Music to get a amp service by Sam Timberlake. The service Don Murdoch offers is very helpful. Thanks
Great place to find instruments and instruction! The staff are all knowledgeable and friendly. Good amp selection, too.
Great place and good people. Fixed an amp head really quick for a touring band out of TX.
I came in with a Martin acoustic and was given a very fair and greater-than-Guitar-Center trade-in price. I was able to pick up a Korean-made Epiphone Les Paul with DiMarzio pickups. I played it for ten minutes and knew I needed to take it home. Don hooked me up with a set of strings and 1/4 cable.A few days later, I came in with some humbuckers I bought. Due to a physical disability, I could not screw in the humbuckers to the housing rings. Harold, the tech, connected them for me and I was on my way to installing them into the Les Paul.I will be doing all of my guitar shopping here when I can. The used gear is plentiful, fairly priced, and in great shape. I SUGGEST YOU DO THE SAME!
Very helpful!!
Lurking in one of the side rooms of this place is a master les paul luthier.I had a gibson gold top lp pro p90 that i was about to sell because i just didnt think i liked p90s. After Harold got ahold of it i can now say i love p90s and this lp isnt going anywhere. setup was flawless. Harold is the man! highly recommend
Great amp repair shop! Sam Timberlake is one of the best!!
Great selection of guitars. Staff is knowledgeable !!!
Always a wonderful experience when I walk through the door. Good gear selection. Great prices. Helpful staff.
If you love music and you need an instrument repair this place is a definite gem.
They generally have the best used stock in Birmingham, lots of great vintage pieces, really just lots of stuff. However, they are not online, not even something as simple as a stock list. its really disappointing because I would like to shop and but from them, but it is not easy to get to their location (middle of downtown area, near the hospitals and trendy eating, so lots of traffic). I would buy so much more stuff from them if they would put up anything that simply listed their current stock. I cant call them and say hey man, list all of your guitars and conditions for me every few day, and I am not about to drive 60 minutes from my suburb on a whim. Although I would be up there like a shot if there was an online presence/list, and there was something I wanted. But, since I never know what is up with that place or their stock, and gas is $$$, I just occasionally go, and rarely purchase. Great store, but 4 stars for no way of knowing stock ahead of a long drive through terrible traffic.
Great place to buy guitars, basses, amps, anything guitar related. Don is a great guy and he takes great care of you. If you need anything guitar related, this is the place to go...!!!
Tried to get my guitars worked on here multiple times. First time was an 8 string, guy said I dont like black guitars they scratch too easily and then rubbed a cloth with steel wool fibers over it and scratched the guitar. GEE I wonder why! Had a pickup swap done on another guitar, put a scratch on it that went through the paint. Not only that, but he took it upon himself to do a full set up when I did not ask him to now I have buzz everywhere and it plays worse than it did before, then charged me for it. Oh and the pickups are also out of phase. Sorry, but thats it. No more chances. Goodbye.
Don and his staff are very knowledgeable and helpful people, and the selection is great. If you need your guitar or bass set up, Harold is the best in Birmingham.
One of the best shops Ive been in gave us free shirts and let us jam. Highly recommend
Great shop. Stopped by this shop while on tour because my 67 Traynor was giving me fits every night. Sam fixed me right up, excellent service. 10/10 would reccomend to anyone
Really cool spot, found some really cool old gear...... owner doesnt seem to want to part with any of it though.
Cool place. Interesting selections. Quality products.
Gotta catch the right people in.. but good little music store..
Great people and know what theyre doing
Harold is a master at wiring guitars up. He tops my knowledge in that area, therefore, for the harder jobs, I send my brother there. :)You cant trust Bailey Bros and Guitar Center in this town. You can trust Highland.
Been coming here for a number of years. Knowledge base of staff is very good -to -excellent range. Prices seem fair.
Professional touring guy out of nashville. Bought tons of equipment from Highland. Great place with friendly service. 10/10 would recommend.
Cool guys, good prices on guitars. Super chill place. They also sell guitar accessories
Cute, quaint little music store in the Birmingham area. Decent prices (most notably on guitars), and the owner was very nice.
Harold Has been working on my guitars for years. Always get a great deal.
Eric Essix, Damon Johnson and many others trust their go to guy Harold for guitar set up.. Ive taken over twenty guitars throughout the years to the guy.. He is hands down the best.. Dont let the goof reviews fool u.. Hes H Bomb Harold for a reason... Rockin
Great selection of new and used gear. They have some very rare vintage guitars & amps
I left this store just a moment ago after being asked to leave because I had not yet made a purchase. I had originally intended to pick up a few packs of strings for my acoustic, now I’m glad I had not. I stopped by today with my friend who had told me about this store. He has been a customer of this store before and had always told me the staff here was friendly and that they have great service. We spent roughly 45 minutes in the store before the man at the counter, whom we had previously overheard talking to another customer about us saying, “What’s the deal with these two jokebags?” told us to get out of the store because we had not yet bought anything. We promptly left the store and I soon received a text from my friend saying that he had gone back inside to try to clear things up with the man that was working the counter and he told me that the man said he was not feeling well and is looking to close the store early. So if his goal is to minimize the business they get to close up early, he is doing very well.
Bought a guita there yeRs ago. Just visiting the store off Highland for the first time. Nice array of guitars !
The best staff and selection!!
Great shop for used gear and repairs. Owner will work with you on trades.
Great local shop with an awesome selection of used gear. Great place to look for local Bham builders like Southside Custom Guitars or Samamp.
I have been shopping here for 30 years. Love the service and the shop.
Vibey little shop. Some cool vintage gear.
Great selection of musical instruments and equipment.
Highland is a great shop for both vintage and new gear! Highly recommended.
Very cool place. Guitars with mojo.
As a local of BHM Ive been to Highland Music many times over the last 10 years or so. Theyve always had an interesting selection of gear. Youll see the usual flow of second-hand gear pass through. It seems like a popular place to sell your guitar or amp on consignment. Highland also has some neat vintage stuff. They have several vintage CBS era Strats hanging out behind the counter. They have always managed to have a few other vintage Fenders too. They even have a literal wall of vintage Fender Champ amps that include tweed, blackface, and silverface era examples. So why the low score you ask?The problem with Highland music is the people working there consistently give customers a negative experience. These guys are unknowledgeable in the gear they carry-not the biggest deal. That would be easily forgiven if it werent for their habit of just making up stuff to sound smart when they don’t have an answer. What’s worse than this is their attitude toward customers. Don’t bother asking to play one of those cool vintage guitars. You will only be met with a snide remark about how you probably can’t afford it. Both myself and friends have experienced this kind of rude talk from Highland Music, and it’s honestly lead to our decision of willfully not spending our money there.I do not intend on bashing this store. I am not an angry internet troll, and this is not that kind of post. I genuinely want to see Highland Music succeed. Despite the faults I have complained about, I think it is the coolest guitar store we have in BHM. I would love to see these sort of things change.
Friendly and helpful. Good deals !
Wont ever visit again! No greetings, no nothing. I was in the store about ten minutes and no one ever acknowledge it. I was referred to this place by the guy in Homewood music shop but he couldve saved the breath he use cause nothing was worth driving to this store for!!
Great selection, awesome collection of vintage equipment!
A Great music store I love it
Great selection and staff.
Great shop!
Very understanding and kind folk!
This Is A Place You Dont Want Too Miss
Been going there a long time.
Best service in town!
Guitars are really overpriced, but the guy behind the counter was courteous.
Good customer service
Pretentious and overpriced....typical music store snobbery
Sign is difficult to see from the road.
Cool place!
I dont know
