I don’t typically write reviews unless something is exceptionally BAD, or exceptionally GOOD.I went here on a whim from 3h away and I only have one thing to say… This ice cream is the best ice cream I’ve ever had…IN MY LIFE. Period. End of story.Dramatic, I know, but it truly was amazing the flavor that they delivered in such a simple, no nonsense kind of way. All the ladies there were very nice and very helpful. To add, this place definitely checked all the boxes for me: simple, “hole in the wall”, mom and pop, clean and friendly place. I’d most DEFINITELY travel for this again.
We were immediately greeted upon entering by a cheerful young lady. This ice cream spot was featured on a best ice cream in your state article I came across so I made it a point to visit. We were allowed to sample a few flavors and when I tasted three that I had to have she recommended the flight. My favorite was the goat cheese fig and hubby’s favorite was the magic city and the beach bonfire. One thing I will say is that with the smaller size scoops you can miss out on some of the goodies mixed in. My sample spoon had some of the potato chip and cookie dough but our scoop was missing those.Either way if you can’t decide what you want try a flight! You won’t be disappointed :)
I didnt know that this little hidden gem (Big Spoon Creamy) even existed. Great little ice cream shop in Avondale. You got to google it to find it.😏 Its sitting back in the cut right off 6th Avenue. They have a lot of very different kinds of favors. Its not your average vanilla and chocolate kind of ice cream shop. They have special flavors like Goat Cheese Fig🥴🥴, peach buttermilk 😝 and Vairhona Dark Chocolate❤!! I test tasted a couple of favors, but ended up going with Lemon Passion Fruit Chiffon. In fact, Ive been there twice and both times I got the same favor. I guess Ill switch up the next time, as I am a true lover of the lemon favor!😏😏😏 The waffle cone is made of vanilla. It taste soooo good!👍👐👐 The prices are reasonable, not too high. If you havent tried them, do so. You wont be disappointed! 👍😁💯❤ Besides, its HOT🔥🔥🔥 outside, thats an good enough reason to have ice cream!! 🍨🍧🍦
Try Magic City flavored ice cream. Oh me oh my, its beyond good. Four stars were giving because I dont like the waffle coned I just prefer the ordinary cake cones which they do not have. Hint hint,. Some of us want a small cone
Being lactose intolerant with a food sensitivity to dairy, I rarely eat ice cream. Big Spoon Creamery was the best and no regrets afterwards! We loved this place more Jeni’s so if you’re debating which one to go to then come to Big Spoon Creamery! There is no indoor seating area BUT! The outdoor seating area right outside is worth sitting and eating your ice cream. The GPS lead me nearby with a street over from the building. I would warn anyone ahead of time and not familiar with the area to look at the map first before getting into the car and following the GPS.
We had to stop in here while driving through Alabama, only because I saw the creme brulee banana split. It was worth the stop. Although I had a helping of apple pies 30 minutes earlier, I had to make room for the bana split. Freshly made vanilla bean ice cream that you could tell it was made from scratch with no additives. The Fresh Mint Ice Cream is also a winner. They used actual mint as if they pureed it in the ice cream itself. The ice cream is light and refreshing. Im so glad we got a chance to stop in here.
Big Spoon made our wedding cake, and it was delicious! They were able to accommodate a tasting for us where we sampled the cake, and they were very kind people to work with. On our wedding day, the cake looked perfect and tasted great. They delivered on time and allowed us to rent a cake stand as well.
O-M-G! This place is where is at! We were passing by and stop here for some ice cream and thank God we did! The place is super nice and cozy. The outdoor area is great too! But we did not come here for that, how about the ice cream? AMAZING. we tried two, coffee and cookies & cream with a vanilla waffle cone. Cant wait to try more since there were both great. If you are around, please do yourself a favor and stop here! See the pictures for more detail.
You owe to yourself to try any of the unique flavor combinations. If you love dark chocolate try Valrhona Dark Chocolate and if you enjoy apple pie try Goat Cheese Caramel Apple Crisp. Thank me later.
Great local ice cream shop in the Avondale neighborhood. Good non-dairy options for those that are looking. They have great rotating/seasonal flavors.
A hidden gem in the Magic City. The ice cream is absolutely incredible, and the staff are always super friendly. The banana splits and watermelon sorbet are absolutely addictive. Definitely worth a visit if you need a sweet treat after a long day or a great dessert after a nice dinner.
Good place to go for interesting flavors of ice cream. My wife and I both got one scoop with waffle cones. It was enough for us. A little pricey but worth a visit
Very modern interior. The young ladies who served us were really friendly. One of them was new, so the other one was training her. I visited because it was next door to Sons Doughnuts. There were two vegan options. I dont remember the name of the flavor I had, but it tasted like strawberries, and had fudge with something else that gave it a crunch. It was delicious! Had the consistency of a creamy ice cream.
We just had some delicious, locally-made ice cream. All the staff was masked. There are just a few indoor seats. There are spaced benches and tables on a shaded patio. About 75% of customers were masked.
Weve always been well pleased with the selection and our choices of flavors. The staff have always been helpful, courteous, and friendly. If youre in the area, its a treat thats well worth it.
Best ice-cream on this side of town! The chocolate is amazing. Tastes like you just ate a spoonful of chocolate.
Excellent service and excellent icecream. Great helpful staff. Handicap accessible.
This is the best ice cream you’re going to get within a 500 radius, if not more. The owners have worked in the best restaurants in town, and now have their own place to experiment and create truly great ice cream!Every flavor (which changes every month—except for chocolate and vanilla) uses the best ingredients available. I’ve even been in the kitchen briefly, and seen how they infuse flavors into the cream with smoke! My personal favorite ice cream on this planet is Big Spoon’s coffee ice cream and coffee almond toffee ice cream. It’s perfect, but just know it may not be available since the flavors change!
Outstanding spot we love it 💕💕 kinda hidden but thats part of the charm ...staff is always super awesome!!!
Often imitated but never duplicated. You won’t find better ice cream in the southeast. Best ice cream I have ever had.
First time visiting today. It wont be my last. I had the buttermilk corn cookie ice creamofmybob......I dont know how to explain it. Im a country boy raised on a farm grew up with cornbread. So anything that reminds me of home is a plus. It is a treat really nice flavor. It really did taste like my kin folks ice cream. Damn big spoon creamery Im glad your ice cream was part of my cheat meal.
I’ve been here a few times and every time is wonderful!! I love how they have seasonal flavors and let you sample them. I do wish they had some dairy free options though. The customer service is great and the store is cute! It’s a little hard to find though because it’s off of the road. I would recommend it for a sweet treat or a good date spot!
I love the variety and the fact that theres a few new flavors every time I visit.
The Customer service is awesome. The ice cream is so delicious.
Service was good with things to improve. Home made wafers really good you have to have one of you go. The banana split is to dye for but it comes with just 2 cream balls so if it’s just for you it’s fine but if you will share (our case ) add an extra ice cream ball and it will be perfect the caramelize bananas are the best of it . Definitely coming backFYI: they are not doing samples due to COVID
Excellent ice cream, friendly staff. Its a bit pricey, but worth it.
Yum! I love ice cream and consider myself something of a judge of what is good and what is not. This place is amazing. All ingredients in the ice cream as well as the ice cream itself is made in house. It is delightfully smooth and the flavours are well thought out. Im more of a soft ice cream kind of girl but Id go out of my way to go there.
Big Spoon is EXCEPTIONAL when everything falls into place. I love the seasonally changing menu. When you get a fresh, well-formed waffle cone and the right ice cream flavor, the experience cannot be beat. Unfortunately, that’s only about 70% of the time I go. I was just so impressed with Big Spoon when it first opened for about a year or so, but more recently I have had inconsistent waffle cone freshness, or the ice cream drips out the bottom like any other cone. If I order an ice cream flavor with bits (fruits, brownie, cake, etc), I never get quite as many yummy bites with bits as I hope. It’s still great ice cream though.
Super cute over cream shop! When I went on a Saturday, there was a market happening, and people were selling vintage items. It was amazing!! The shop is cute, and they have a lot of different flavors. The waffle cones are delicious!! I tried the London fog ice cream and the dark chocolate, which were both incredible! My boyfriend had the mint chocolate chip and loved it!
This is my 3 3rd time 1in Homewood and 2x @ The Avondale location. I tried the key lime and it was worth every penny I spent on it. And I got a pint of the Blueberry Cobbler flavor and it’s was Great !!! They were making the waffle cones fresh right were the customers can view. They have Great customers service and clean.. If you want some Good and variety flavors I would Highly Recommend Big Spoon.. It was the flavors for me😊😊😊
Sweet lord the ice cream is delicious. Unique high-quality with flavors that will remind you of your favorites but with a unique twist. Got it loved it will have some more.
Out of 30 states, 2 countries (Japan + U.S.), and hundreds of ice cream shops, this creamery has the 3rd best ice cream in the world so far & the absolute best in the southeast.
The ice cream is all fresh and home made and is absolutely delicious! They have many unique flavors and delicious waffle cones.
Really disappointing. The plain vanilla lacked much flavor or character. I had the caramel apple pie, and while it looked incredible, it was flavorless - just a hint of caramel, but otherwise it was basically inedible. My four-year-old also didn’t like her ice cream, and while I’m not sure why exactly, I don’t blame her.
Insane portion for the price. Kids ordered a single scoop waffle cone ($8.50 for two). The ice cream scoop was about the size of a golf ball - not coming back.Update: So I am responding to the business response that they stand by their price per portion. I want to say a few things I should have said initially:1. The flavor was really good to ME. My kids were not particularly excited about it. Full disclosure: I have that one picky kid and that one ‘likes most anything’ kid.2. The waffle cone was delicious.I was traveling through town with family, looking for a place to get kids a treat. This place advertised (on Google Maps) as “kid friendly.”So, the more I considered why I was disappointed, I realized this:1. This place IS NOT kid friendly. The variety of flavors are very bold and unique, with limited choices on toppings and basically an area designed for socializing adults to stand, visit, and eat (which 90% of the 10-15 customers were doing). The atmosphere is very modern/cold (concrete and metal) not warm or a place small kids would want to hang out with Mom and Dad.So, here are my recommendations for the business, since they obviously read these reviews (which is good):1. Make it clear this is more of a ‘high-end’ adult social experience, not a family ’go to’ spot.2. Put a scaled picture somewhere to clearly show the customer what to expect on portion size with an emphasis on the extreme quality over quantity.3. Make a smaller waffle cone for smaller portions to visually balance the serving.4. Place large, bold pictures of the ice creams being ‘hand made’ all over the interior so as the customer is enjoying your product, they understand all the work that went into it. I’m visualizing photos done in real artistic finishes to mimic paintings with colorful frames to spruce up the place, at eye level around the plain white/gray walls. Now I’m sure the first response is going to be something like ‘but kids come in here all the time...’. This might be true, but how many COME BACK? The web search I used may be partially at fault for misleading me, but the business owner needs to know what is out there regarding search results and customer expectations to avoid pitfalls....to wrap up, I’m unwavering from my 2-star rating as it stands. The portion size does not match your business name “Big Spoon!”Cheers.
Amazing ice cream. It was perfect on a warm evening.
Service was good and th y have a good concept but the flavors are off.
This is by far my favorite ice cream stop! Unique flavors, great value, and always friendly staff.
Never a bad experience here. The staff are unbelievably, consistently friendly, and the ice cream is always fantastic. Tried my very first hand at the Big Spoon sundae (photo evidence to follow) after an initial Little Spoon ask and then idea-swap. Verdict: male egos are sometimes a terrible thing - didnt get anywhere *near* finishing that thing; and, despite my not having what it took to bring down the Big Spoon, the struggle was absolutely delicious from start to inglorious finish, and totally worth it.Absolutely love this shop - looking forward to a lot more visits soon and especially during the warmer days ahead! 👍🏼👍🏼👌🏼👌🏼🍦
Best Ice Cream Shop in Birmingham! We love it here.
Spectacular!!! Absolutely delicious & great friendly staff! Lovely outside patio too!
I dont see the hype!! I could have gotten way better ice cream at Walmart for 5 bucks. Instead I paid 20 for ice cream cones I would never order again.
The perfect spot for a date night. We stood in a seemingly long line but it moved quickly and Im grateful we weren’t discouraged by all the people. I got the mango scoop on a waffle cone that was absolutely refreshing and creamy and all around delicious. Five stars for cute instagram-ready aesthetic and the yummiest ice cream.
I got the strawberry and goat cheese ice cream and it was delicious! Very inclusive environment with great vegan options as well!
I got the cookie and creams and it’s just terrible...taste nothing like cookies or cream and barely taste like ice cream. Would not recommend this place you better off going to Dairy Queen.
Some of the best ice cream I have ever had!
Bonfire smore is incredible, smoked coconut base with vegan fudge and graham crackers makes it devine.
First, the customer service here is fantastic. They are always so incredibly friendly. You are able to try any of their flavors before making a decision. Second, you can go around the corner in the building to watch how they make their delicious ice cream and sammies. They have a cute outdoor area that kids can play or you can just hang out. We love this place!
Big Spoon is awesome. Hands down the best dessert place in Birmingham. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch ice cream is by far the best flavor, so its a must on a first visit. The Flight is a great option to try a bunch of flavors and share with your friends, or eat it all yourself. The vanilla bean is amazing, and so is the honeysuckle blackberry. The goat cheese strawberry is also surprisingly good! Anyways, Im about to pass out in a sugar coma, but check this place out!
Sad there was no strawberry. The icecream was delicious and staff was friendly.
Vanilla bean . 💖 enough said . Great specialty ice cream
Best sundae I have ever had.
I highly recommend. We were passing through, it was in the upper 70s 80s and whats better to cool you off than ice cream. I had the Pina Colada vegan & the keylime...my husband had the AL strawberry. So delich!
Yummy! My waistline has regrets but my taste buds dont!🍦🍨
Doesnt have a lot of options, the cookies and cream was good though. If they get birthday cake Ill change it to a 5 star.
Blueberry cobbler ice cream is wonderful!
Might be the best ice cream ever!
The experience was awesome! Their 2021 icecream flavor was like good hopes and dreams all in one on top of a cone of happiness! Oh and their blood orange passion furit sorbet w/ pineapple passion fruit compote topping was delicious! Do your self a favor and give yourself a scoop of happiness!
Big Spoon is a blessing and a curse, in a wonderful way; once you have their ice cream, no other will measure up. The way the flavors of their ice creams are so well integrated into the textures is sheer perfection and how they manage to keep coming up with new flavors seasonally is baffling. I am a bit partial, having a severe sweet tooth, but their ice cream and desserts are the best Birmingham has to offer, if you want to enjoy one small scoop or go for The Big Spoon (sundae).
If you are debating over whether or not you should get the waffle cone, GET IT! I don’t know what they use to make it but I am pretty sure each one is touched by the hand of God! Try the cold brew flavor ice cream if you are a coffee lover. You will not be dissappointed. Friendly service. Can’t wait to go back next time I am in the Magic City.
The ice creams and sorbet that we had were splendid. Staff are very nice. New favorite.
EXTREMELY tasty. Never had anything bad there and we get the flights often. Friendliest staff out there. The pinnacle example of a great, local business.
THIS is an amazing ice cream and sorbetexperience. I have purchased sorbet or ice cream weekly for three years. There is alwaysa creative new flavor that I have never experienced before. There is no other ice creamthis rich, creamy, and flavorful. Do not miss thisone of a kind experience.
Absolutely delicious ice cream and reasonable prices.
The best place for ice cream ❣
They were great people with awesome! Hospitality just needed more traditional favors.
Great flavors of ice cream and milk shakes. Great service. Place was very clean and decor was great as well. Also, its close to I-20 so helpful if you are passing by and want to grab something quick.
Their ice cream is amazing, very tasty! I told the staff to surprise me with the second flavor and they picked for me Honeycomb and they were both awesome ♥ I recommend!
