Jon Broida runs a solid operation. Hes seriously trustworthy, passionate, effective, skilled and friendly. Customer service is personal, and warm. The first knife I bought (off the JKI website) was back in February of 2016 - an all purpose, rustic Kurouchi, big blue gyuto. I called in before pulling the trigger, and they guided me right. Later that year, I gifted a yanagiba to a friend, and he was seriously stoked. Somehow, I ended up checking out with an extra knife, but with one email, Jon sorted the order out, refunded me, and made sure I wasnt annoyed.Five years and a few work trips to Japan later, I amassed in my kitchen an effective toolkit of about a half dozen knives of varying shapes, steels, and sizes. One pandemic day in July 2020, the magnetic knife-holder fell, and broke knife tips, my heart, and my effing voice from the scream I let out.I reached out to Jon, who told me that they had to cease sharpening ops, and would I like to send them to someone else. Would I ****. I said Id wait. Good thing I did.Sent them out last week, just got them back, and Im over the moon with the results and the value for money. Dont kid yourself - this guy takes care of a *lot* more knives than you ever will, so if you need re-tipping or some proper care for that heavy single-bevel deba, send it to Jon.Highly recommended, would give JKI ten stars if I could.

This was such a great experience. I went in to purchase my first Japanese knife and Jon spent time educating me about the different knives and how to use it. Not only that, but I got some great food tips. Thank you again, Ill be back!!

Bought my first nice knife from them. I walked in knowing nothing, and only videos I watched on YouTube and Japanese chef knives websites. Wow... Great service & product selection. Came back to buy 4 more knives as gifts and accessories for cooking. Got my knife bag and Dark Hardt apron from there as well. Not sure if my cooking tastes better from having better knives and cooking tools lol. But it feels like it. :D

I love this place. I was directed here when I first moved to LA, and it does not disappoint. Great selection of knives, with friendly customer service. If you need a saya, just ask. If they dont have one, they offer custom made. How great is that?

I came in to purchase a knife and can attest that the customer service is amazing! I don’t know much about knives except from internet research but Jon sat with me for nearly 40 minutes and explained everything I could need to know without the slightest hint of condescension- even during holidays when I’m sure they’re super busy with online orders. Patient, knowledgeable, attentive, the list goes on. I’m so excited about my new knife and will be returning to have it sharpened. For the same price as a fancy big box store knife, you can walk out of here with a much better knife, all the while supporting a family-run business. Thanks Jon & family!

Jon has been fantastic. I made an error with the shipping address for my order and Jon went out of his way to correct the issue immediately and continued to check up on me to make sure everything was ok. He deserves every high praise sent his way. And his YouTube channel is an incredible resource for anyone wanting to learn more about Japanese knives. Thanks Jon, youre awesome.

Jon is incredibly welcoming and helpful. I walked in with absolutely no knowledge of knives and Jon was more than happy to go into full detail about any knife that caught my eye. Its evident he really cares that his customers leave with the appropriate tools more than anything else. Whether its your 1st knife or 50th knife, I highly recommend checking out Japanese Knife Imports!

Really great guys. We came in to get my partner’s knives sharpened and get a broken tip re-shaped and sharpened - and even though they have too much of a backup and aren’t accepting new business right now, they brought us back and talked to us for a while about some of the work they do and were real cool about apologizing for not being able to currently do the work we needed. We’ll come back because of their great attitudes. And they gave us tips on a great burger in the area!

I dont write reviews but I had to write this one. I took my yanagiba to Japanese Knife Imports yesterday knowing that they werent taking in any new knives for sharpening due to a 3month backlog but hoping they could take a look at it and tell me whats wrong with it. Josh not only explained to me what is wrong with it, but explained to me how to fix it, drew it out for me, started the process for me, gave me a hands-on sharpening tutorial, and explained different types of stones! In this day and age of cutthroat competition and focus on the bottom-line, it was incredible to experience first-hand how gracious Josh was with his time and knowledge. Im just a home cook so I dont have a lot of knife sharpening needs, but whatever they are, from now on Im only going to Japanese knife imports!

I had a fantastic experience with Jonathon. Excellent service which included going through which sharpening stones worked best for my preference, giving me great information on the equipment/accessories and selecting a awesome knife which was in my price range. In fact, he suggested I not spend too much money on stones and knives before I have the appropriate skills which I really appreciate. I have no complaints other than I wish I had more time to spend in this awesome establishment.

Outstanding customer service, and incredible depth of knowledge as far as knives, metals, knife construction and application of each tool. The products are of the best quality, there is no better β€œchef’s toy store” in the USA, shop in store or online and you’ll receive the same prompt, helpful attention and care. Recommended to any and all, especially chefs!

Wow! What a GREAT find!Ive always been a fan of Japanese culture even working on a project outside of Tokyo and living in Japan for a short time.Recently I decided that I wanted my cutlery to be sharpened with the same precision that the Japanese knives and cutting tools have.I read up on Japanese whetstones, looked at some videos on the whetstones and methods that the Japanese use when they sharpen knives and then found a local shop called Japanese Knife Imports.I walked in and was amazed at how much it felt like walking into a shop in Japan.Fine Japanese knives, tools, whetstones and ceramics all on display in an earthy style. There is nothing commercial about this store... I felt like I walked into an art gallery and that I was surrounded by works of art..The owner Jon came out to greet me and was incredibly knowledgeable, informative and generous with his time.I told him what I was looking to do and what my budget was. After answering all of my questions as well as asking me a few to get an understanding of my needs, he talked about the different whetstones their functions and then took me into the back of his shop and had me try out the types of stones that he had discussed and felt would best suit my requirements for the range of cutlery that I own.As he did this, he provided various explanations about what to do while sharpening as well as emphasizing the importance of how the blade felt to me (tactile experience is his description) as it moved across each type of whetstone that I tried. When we were finished and I walked out of his store, I left not just with a purchase for myself, I also left with an experience. And it didnt end there.I hadnt looked in the bag and when I arrived home and went to take my stone out, I found that it was boxed and wrapped as though it was a fine tool or jewelry from an artisan who has vast pride in their workmanship and is presenting you with something special. It was like a small visual feast, the paper was elegant and the box wrapped in that Japanese style of β€œsimplicity is beauty” and I felt kind of guilty unwrapping it..Knowledgeable businesses owners that not only love what they do, but really care about providing great service to the individual, as Jon (and his assistant Josh) had shown me, are (for me) a rare find.If your looking to purchase Japanese cutlery (whether you know what you want or are looking to learn), handmade, wood kiln fired ceramics, cutting tools (like small Japanese axes) or lessons on how to sharpen a knife from a master, this is the place..

Two days ago I ordered a Gesshin Uraku 240mm Stainless Wa-Gyuto from Japanese Knife Imports. I opted for the standard shipping that was included free with my order. I live in Boston, so I expected my Gyuto to arrive sometime next week. This evening, I was treated by finding a package waiting for me. In two days time they were able to sharpen, package, write me a semi-personalized letter to thank me for my business, and ship it to me. The packaging was tasteful. It included a description of the line of knives mine was from and what the Gesshin name originated from, I believe it meant Heart Moon based on the owners in-laws Japanese pottery. The knife itself was beefier than I expected. I was unable to handle them, so I studied a reddit community, (/rt/chefknives), to help me choose the right knife for my needs. Since it is Japanese with a traditional handle, I expected something more fragile. Thanks for the help Chefknives Reddit community, but I fear I spent too much time with you and I may be looking for a laser soon.

I recently bought a gengetsu 240 mm semi-stainless wa-gyuto from Japanese knife imports. Besides the knife being one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever held, they called me (first time customer) after my order to make sure I understood the details of the knife and to make sure I was comfortable with the purchase I was making. They also sharpened the knife for me before shipping. I rarely write reviews, but this customer service went above and beyond what I’d ever expected from an online order. I will probably never buy a knife from anyone else.
