You can’t go wrong with the OG mochi muffin!I first found them out from their goods sold at Asha Tea House. The original mochi muffin is so yummy and the sesame seeds on top are my favorite bite! The muffins are a good size and a real treat. It’s not too sweet either.I really wish they had more flavors. I’m not a big fan of what they had which was matcha, black sesame, and ube.The shop is sooo cute! Small but ppl line up outside. There were two registers to ring ppl up. You point or tell the staff what you want and they prep it for you. There’s a small rack/corner of merchandise that’s totes adorbs! My highlight was seeing the plushie version of a mochi muffin! Too cute and original.I wish they posted their menu somewhere else because as ppl try to walk out, you have to ask ppl to move from the doorway but everyone is crowded against the doorway because that’s where the menu is. And guess what, most don’t care if they’re in your way as they’re completely oblivious to what’s going on since they’re so focused on deciding on what goodies to get. I would love to see it on a sandwich board outside so it’s bigger but that’s just me.Parking= street parking. No designated parking lot so you just have to drive around and park where you find a spot on the neighborhood or behind the building.
Employees are super nice, helpful, and friendly here!! It was my first time and I didnt know what I wanted. The employee that helped me was patient, and I did not feel rushed. I really like the variety of flavors they have and it wasnt too sweet. My dad typically doesnt like sweets but he enjoyed these treats!
Yummy pastries and delicious drinks! Love to go before work!
Churro mochi muffin is absolutely amazing, as it the black bean sesame one
I rarely go out due to Covid now, but decided to make another special trip (over half hour drive) to this bakery just to pick up some goodies to share with my family. At exactly 9am I tried calling Third Culture to place my curbside pickup, but after calling 10 times without anyone picking up, I decided its early enough that I can go pick it up in person. I was indeed early but not as early as a few others. Wait was short, and everyone was good about staying behind the marked lines to be 6ft apart.Only 2 customers allowed at a time and each had their own station away from each other to order. They had the plastic glasses and all employees were wearing face mask. I thought they were very Covid friendly.I mainly wanted to write this review because the staff here deserves 5 stars for customer service. The gentleman that helped me yesterday was patient, and attentive. I said off the bat I wanted to make 2 orders for separate families. Despite my terrible instructions, he understood it and put things in boxes and bags perfectly. At the end my 3 box order, he said he would put two heart stickers on the one box (for the second family I was going to gift it to) so I know which orders were for who. Usually when I did curbside I had to break open the stickers to distribute the order for my family since I couldnt tell which box had which order. Then as he was ringing me up, I was looking at the donuts again and asked if he could put one more yuzu lemon into a bag for me and it was almost like he read my mind (that since I drove all this way and cant enjoy the ones I bought till 3:15pm with my family, I was going to have one on road for my drive back) and he asked did you want me to warm that up for you? I literally laughed and said yes, please! Its like you read my mind that I want to eat it in the car! haha This purchase and experience in the morning, made my day!If youre reading this review and not the other I wrote, I highly recommend the following goodies: ORIGINAL mochi muffin (THE BEST), black sesame, ube and matcha are excellent as well. I personally love the yuzu lemon mochi donut, and the mango passionfruit and thai tea (strong thai tea teaste!) were very good as well! You really cant go wrong with anything here.Mochi muffins are $3.95 each and mochi donuts are $3.25.
Best mochi doughnuts in the bay! The coconut haupia today was incredible! Plus they have such a kind staff and are always supportive of other bay area food creators (including letting other bakeries having pop-ups in their space). Everything about this business just makes you feel happy and glad you stopped in!
My sister found this place when she came to visit me up north and I LOVE her for that because she doesn’t even care for desserts. Having said that, she is obsessed with the mochi muffins like I am. My favorite is the original mochi muffin and I also like the brownie mochi muffin. I’ve tried the match as well but always go back to the original that has sesame seeds on top. The muffin is heavy in weight so you know it’s the real deal and if you love mochi you will LOVE these muffins and will not be disappointed. I tried one of the drinks but wasn’t as in love.
I ordered their summer special dessert - mochi bread pudding and the golden matcha latte. Both are delicious. Service is amazing, too!
It looks wonderful. My matcha latte was nice. The design of the place is charming and clean.
Third culture Bakery is located in Berkeley, CA on 8th street! They are known for making their mochi donuts, mochifins, and matcha drinks!I ordered 3 of their mochifins which are the orginal, matcha, and Ube! My personal favorite was the orginal mochifin because of the the texture was spongy and loved the sesame seeds as texture! It was soft and squishy and had a lot of flavor for a mochifin! I really like the matcha one as well because it wasnt super bitter to me and the balance of sweet and bitterness came through in this mochifin. I was not a fan of the Ube mochifin because you barely taste any Ube and it was like a soul search to find the nutty flavor and the sweetness.I also ordered 3 of their mochi donuts which were the strawberry, key lime pie, and the Ube coconut! My recommendation would definitely be the key lime pie because the bitterness of the key lime pie balances out with the sweetness of the sugar! It was definitely very delicious and would really recommend this mochi donut! I liked the strawberry one as well however, I wish I had a stronger strawberry flavor because I feel that I didnt get enough. The Ube coconut again was a miss because I was searching for the Ube in the donut and couldnt taste the nutty sweetness I was looking for. Liked the coconut shavings on top though but the Ube to be honest was not the star.Overall, those mochifins and donuts made my day! Definitely recommend this place especially the key lime donut and the original mochifin. They make it covid friendly and only let in two parties in the bakery. Nice job, this is worth to come back to!
If you like chewy donuts, sugary drinks, and waiting in line for 20-35 minutes, this place is your spot. Bright and colorful to distract you from the so-so donuts.I was a bit shocked with the mango-flavored donut very tart with an aftertaste which I can only describe as used coffee grounds. No thanks🙈!Thankful I shared these with a few friends cause the texture and flavors werent for me.
Everything is gluten free. Amazing selection of mochi and matcha options. Friendly staff. Efficient and COVID safe ordering. Some seating available outdoor
Delicious mochi muffins and donuts! Really scrumptious. But really terrible coffee. A pour over was made and delivered into our hands tepid at best, weak, blah. I have no idea how they did that. So, pastries yes, coffee def no!
Loved it. Hand crafted matcha, right before your very eyes. Delish and fresh!!!
Ube 🍓🧇 ftw! Strawberry mylk is also really good, and they pair great together. There is usually at least a small line to get in and order, so be ready to wait at least a few minutes - but it’s worth it!
Yummy mochi muffins and mochi donuts!! Tried their matcha lychee drink as well and it was delicious!
Service was amazing. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I couldnt decide to I took several donuts and muffins. Gluten free friendly. Ceremonial Matcha Tea hot was on point. Third Culture was amazing. Could not dine in because of COVID so took them Berkeley and ate them there. They have a cute setup for pics. Cant leave the bay without trying them out.
Super rich and delicious matcha and the staff is the nicest! Always make sure to stop in when I’m working next door!
The music, stickers, clothing, food, drinks -- the whole vibe here is the best!! 💖🌺 Ive taken some of my favorite people here, & they all love this Hot Spot. Super delicious!
Overrated. Tho dense, sweet and heavy pastries. Too expensive. Don’t waste your time, money and calories. I really wanted to love it, but I don’t
Service is sooooo friendly and fast! Helps with any questions and makes us feel welcome. Food is great!
I ordered Donuts and a latte on Saturday. When my husband went to pick it up the shop, the ladies said they didnt know where our order went. So I just called today to see if we can pick up the order and they said they couldnt help me. they told me to call door dash instead and ask for a refund. So why cant I get the Donuts and latte that I already paid for??? I think its a poor customer service to refuse service to someone that paid in advanced and wasnt able to pick up one day but is asking to come the next day. Especially if I have a receipt that I paid already. and especially since its a Bakery. Not a restaurant.Im 1000% sure the Donuts I wasnt able to pick up on Saturday were sold to someone else. Ive worked at a Bakery and if someone wanted to pick up the following day we would gladly let them, especially if they paid in advanced. So word of advice, just order directly through them. Or dont even bother at all. Such poor customer service and overly priced products at that. Theres other Mochi donut places in the Bay that treat their customers with much better service.
I didn’t know too much about this place before I dropped by but the mochi muffin that I had was really tasty and I am itching to go back to try the rest of the menu.
Love this bakery! Great quality products and always friendly service. I’ll be back, again and again! Lol I live near by and walk here often. I cant get enough of their savory kimchi mochi waffle!!
Wanted to try Third Cultures mochi baked goods, and they did not disappoint. Chewy and flavorful, without being cloyingly sweet like many American baked goods. Pictured clockwise: chocolate mochi muffin, passionfruit butter mochi donut, strawberry lychee butter mochi donut, chocolate butter mochi donut, original mochi muffin, and cinnamon sugar mochi donut. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite, as they were all delicious. I believe that we were told everything was gluten-free, but I cant confirm that on the website, so please confirm if thats important to you. No waiting when we arrived. Nice service & very willing to explain about ingredients. Will return!
The mochi muffins and donuts here are fantastic, whether youre celiac or not. We make sure to drop by anytime were in Berkeley to load up on a dozen, and inevitably go through them in an instant. The drinks are just good in my opinion, nothing to criticize, but not mind blowing. The muffins are always worth a detour though.
The donuts were fairly decent. I was not as impressed with the various Mochi donuts flavors as I thought I would be. They were certainly unique, just some of the flavors didnt totally mesh in my mind. Also note: the donuts are thicker, more like cake donuts. Overall good, but not truly great and fairly expensive.
Mochi and matcha. Otherwise, I believe this place to be slightly overrated compared to other spots in the area. But they sure do have a cult following in Berkeley.
Heaven on earth! I make a trip to Third Culture about once every 2 months and buy about $40 worth of muffins, donuts and monkey bread. And every time I regret not buying more. Between two people, we can gobble these up in about 24 hours. They are that good! The donuts are definitely my favorite. The texture, flavor, and perfect consistency is nothing short of a dream. And you know what the coolest part is? Third Culture uses farm to table approaches in their bakery, sourcing local, high quality ingredients. They believe in fair livable wages and treat their staff with kindness and respect. Which is obvious, because in turn, everyone in the bakery is always sooooo incredibly nice and happy. From your donut wrangler, to your matcha mixer, every human at Third Bakery puts love and pride into what they do. Which in turn, makes those mochis that much more magical!
Love this bakery and its only my first visit! They had COVID-19 measures in place to ensure everyones safety, and the staff made a very memorable experience explaining their products available, and also provided little brochures about their bakery! And of course, the mochi muffins are more than worth it. I bought the ube, black sesame, and matcha muffins. Super delicious and loved every bite!Ill be visiting this bakery again very soon!
First Vik sit there had to try all of the Mochi donuts and some muffins. The guy gave an extra curry muffin, which was a perfect savory muffin. Loved it. No cash establishment which I like, so be prepared for that. Pleasant staff and great donuts and muffins. They also have ube chocolate which I never saw before and loved.
This place is pretty good. The staff are super friendly and awesome. The mochi muffin has a nice chew and lovely flavor. Not too sweet. The bread pudding wasnt my favorite but it was a worthy delicacy to taste. No regrets but I might not get it again. I also love the name as Im a third culture kid myself. Must come back and try the mochi donuts.
The baked goodies are so delicious. I love the wide variety of donuts and muffins every day. Great coffee and teas too!!
So so good. Just exceptionally good and unique and consistent. Their donuts are great but honestly the muffins might even be better and the banana pudding might be the best thing in the store. The matcha is great every time, very thoughtful and careful, and cool that they offer so many options for the latte. The basic matcha latte is great though I often go for the roasted matcha latte.
Mochi muffins were delicious! Long wait but worth it. Definitely check this spot out if youre in Berkeley.
Amazing mochi pastries and delicious match drinks. The donuts are delicious but my favorite is the black sesame muffin.
Small donut show that specializes in mochi donuts. The donut and cakes have a slightly chewier and dense texture. Its much sweeter glaze compared to a regular donut. They had a mochi waffle on display as well but its something youll want to eat right away with the fresh fruit and whipped cream. The matcha latte is actually hand crafted with someone hand mixing the matcha before pouring it over ice and soy milk.
They serve donuts, custard muffins, and waffles- all are delicious. We ordered almost every flavor of muffins: churro (my fav), ube, matcha, Thai tea, etc. They are not too sweet, just right. They only had 2 donut flavors available at the time we arrived- raspberry and chocolate. Their waffles are crazy- beautiful and yummy! We ate the one with blueberries and bananas. Bananas was my favorite. The handmade drinks were not good-looking tasted like sand paper and grass, but maybe they were suppose to taste like that. Way too healthy for us. Were coming back for the pastries.
Third Culture has creative muffins and donuts with unexpected flavors like Vietnamese Coffee, Yuzu Lemon, Black Sesame, Matcha, Ube Coconut and Jasmine Milk Tea. They just celebrated their 2nd anniversary and it was festive. About 150 waiting patiently in line while enjoying samples of muffins and donuts. Nice owners, too.
From the sparkling matcha to the mochi donuts, this is a cool little cafe. The quality of everything is quite high.
Got carried away and ordered a dozen + 1. Everything was good! The smell of fresh donuts hits you when you first walk in. Amazing!
Delicious and so cute! As fun of an experience as getting mochi pastries and a delicious coffee drink could be. They even have cute stationary at the counter.
Delicious donuts & muffins! My family enjoyed the passion fruit donut and the original muffin. During our visit there was a rare problem with our order which the staff handled with professionalism and kindness. We highly recommend not just the food but also the service. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Industrial bakery spot.Open, cemented seatings outside to be enjoyed with freshly baked donuts, custard cakes and refreshing match tea latte with honey for the win!I adore the ube custard cake inside and it has a nice top crisp flavor! Matcha latte with honey complimented the cake entirely. They ran out of churro cake and donut flavor, which I was looking forward on trying. Thai tea and sesame are other flavors that are unique. Mochi passion fruit mango was a sweet win.Cheers.
My favorite cafe/bakery in the area. I could write a whole essay on why I love this place. If you’re in the bay area, do yourself a favor and come here.
SAM AND WENTER ARE THE BEST. Ive been eating their mochi muffins since Asha started carrying them a few years back and now, I am enjoying their store-front and brunch series. Get ready to cry because feels get real with each bite. The drinks are good but of them all, the Lychee spritzer takes the cake.
The tiramisu mochi donut is the best thing I have ever tasted in my life. do yourself a favor and go here. life is short and joy is scarce but third culture exists!!! thank you ❤️
I live an hour away and this place is worth the trip just to go here. I take my friends here and they take their friends, everybody needs to go here.
I love donut but I am not a fan of overly sweet and sticky donuts that is more widely available across this country! So when I found this place and read some of the reviews I did want to try them right away... and glad the first thing I did was placed an order for pick up through doordash because when I got there this place had a big line even during pandemic and a weekday!Guess that speaks for its popularity.I got the half a dozen donut pack and they were not huge like the usual norm but medium size. I loved each flavor in the donuts but cant say the same about their coffee. That was the only thing that wasnt to my liking, probably too much roast or the blend but I have tasted better coffee.Tip: order pick up so you can bypass the line
Yummy yum yummmmm!!!!! Gluten free and deliciousness all the way. The staff (Koji?) Was super sweet and helpful and had my curbside pickup ready within minutes. The churro muffins are soooo good and the donuts are a great addition to your afternoon (or morning or night). Thank you, Third Culture, for giving tasty variety to this Celiacs life! Lovely people and great food!
If youre ever in the mood for creative and unique desserts, check out Berkeleys Third Culture Bakery. So many amazing flavors to try from! Theyre also home to the original mochi muffin. Their seasonal specialities make you want to visit again and again. Great donuts, great waffles, and now theyve added some drinks to their menu too.
The mochis were good but I make it better at home where I can leave the edges nice and crispy and there easy to make. Mango passion was so tangy and sour I dont think it tasted the way it sounds like. This was my first time trying this place out and honestly it was okay. What bothered me the most about the store is that the cashier girl asked me how much I should tip! Never ask a customer to tip. It is our choice whether to leave one or not. Better yet, ask the owners to buy a transaction machine to ask the customer how much percentage of tip while making a purchase using their card. This type of customer service is very rude. She is an under trained staff member. I am truly disappointed of her asking me for a tip or maybe the owners taught her that. Rudeness. Because of this, I am not returning. First visit and my last. Oh yea, that tip jar I saw had loads of money in it. That just tells you she was asking a lot of customers to tip!! So watch out. We got some beggers working in that store.
You could actually taste the matcha-i-ness of the drink and snacks here. I recommend this spot for matcha lovers.
Love their mochi muffins
Everything here is to die for. Such a range of yummy and creative flavors, staff are warm and personable, and the beverages are delicious. They put their heart and soul to what they are creating for us there. Never stop!!!
I ordered the iced matcha latte (regular milk with half the honey) and an ube flavored mochi muffin. I typically like my matcha lattes unsweetened but opted with half the amount of honey they usually put, since the honey seemed to be the highlight of the drink. Overall, I love the variety of mochi muffin and mochi donut flavors they have to offer.
Super friendly and patient staff! We absolutely loved the muffins (eat them warm, you wont regret it). The donuts were good, but not as good as the muffins. We were a little disappointed in the strawberry waffle and wouldve like more non coffee/tea beverage options.
First time there today. Had a line but it moved quickly. Staff was helpful and patient and took the time to explain their latte menu and all the mochi donut flavors. Let me just tell you, they are all good. The mochi is soft and chewy and the frosting is not overly sweet. This is definitely my go to place for matcha drinks and mochi donuts. Next time you find yourself in Berkeley drop by. Parking can be a challenge but theres plenty if you dont mind walking a little. They dont accept cash because of covid protocols so bring your plastic.
Great idea and have a variety of flavors but it didnt wow me like I read everyones else reviews. Maybe I hyped it up too much for myself, or I had another place that I really enjoyed that first introduced it for me. Dont get me wrong, it was good, but nothing super wow.Interesting concept, mocha donuts and mocha muffins. The muffins are better than the donuts due to the texture. The donuts though have more variety of flavors, which is mainly from their glazing. It was late in the day and there was still a line, even up to the minutes they were about to close. The staff are very knowledgeable and helped answered my questions and recommended some flavors for me.I got the yuzu, passion fruit, and strawberry donut, along with the original mochi and strawberry muffin. My fav was the original muffin and the passion fruit donut.Wasnt able to try their matcha that they also seem to be known for. Maybe next time!
Absolutely THE best bakery that makes mochi items! I live across the bridge from Berkeley but everytime I need to cross the bridge, I schedule my errands around Third Cultures hours. Everything they sell is amazing, from the donuts to the muffins to the seasonals, to the drinks, everything is a must try! The staff there is also always so friendly, I generally buy three/four items at a time and they occasionally throw in a freebie which is a huge plus for me. There is occasionally a line which does take a while because everyone is admiring the decor and the foods but its well worth the wait. I always recommend this place to others and am surprised by how little known this place is, even to locals. So to you, the fellow traveler, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU CHECK THIS PLACE OUT!
WOW. WOW. WOW. I just received a package of their original Mochi muffins in the mail as a Christmas present. They smelled great, and the presentation was too cute. I immediately went online to plan my first online order, and discovered that the mochi muffins are also gluten-free. Im so happy that I was gifted these tiny presents to the world and cannot wait to try more flavors.
