Sports basement staff were so helpful and patient! Getting my four kids’ (ages 14-8) season ski rentals felt very overwhelming, but they got us sized and through completely painlessly. Despite having a line, they didn’t make us feel rushed, but they were also moving quick. Wonderful staff and quality gear

In a time when bike servicing and parts are extremely slow, Sports Basement is super quick and forthcoming when it comes to anything for your bike care. Always friendly, helpful people both on the floor and behind the register. On this visit, the bike shop person volunteered to put the cleats I was buying onto my shoes while I waited. Then at the register and the standard find everything OK? question, there was one thing I wanted that I couldnt find because it had been moved so I mentioned it. The register person then got someone upstairs to throw it down to them. No hassle, no waiting. Great service.

Love this place! Really has the best selection of kids sports gear and at the right price. Lovely curated stuff. Sadly missed the back to school rush and not a lot left in the kids street shoe department. Also, I’m not the spend $100 on a new pair of athletic shoes person, so I was out of luck.

Sean and the team at the Sports Basement bike shop are not just expert and skillful mechanics, they go above and beyond to get you back on the road (or trail) as soon as possible, with a bike thats fully dialed in and riding like a dream. When a replacement part I needed (and that was fully covered by a warranty) turned out to be on back order for many months, Sports Basement ordered an upgrade part and then reduced both the cost of the part and the labor to make it work. Now the bike is riding like brand new, if not better, while if I took it elsewhere it could very well be sitting in the shop until next year.

About this particular visit...We were just wandering and came upon the Basement Area upstairs and are always amazed at the gear that ends up there. There were boxes and boxes of gear behind some yellow caution tape, and there was a box of labeled shoes on a table right next to the tape. We picked up a few pairs of shoes, and when we went to the cashier, she kind of gave us the stink-eye about going behind the caution tape, and wouldn’t sell us the items.I’m suggesting that SB Staff to don’t put any boxes on a table right next to the caution tape...create a very clear buffer zone. There wasn’t anyone in uniform working up in that area, and nobody said anything to us the 20 minutes we were looking at stuff. We still love looking at new and used gear, and especially appreciate up-cycling gear instead of just trashing it.

Sports basement in Berkeley, pretty cool how they have the merchandise set up. The place looks like a concerted gym or wherehouse, or storage facility. Dont know the history, those are my guesses only. Being there for the first time it was a very large area and laid back atmosphere. The shoes were set up in a little circle separate from the female stuff. The place has two floors and I havent been to the 2nd floor yet. Thats for another visit. I was shopping on the morning of Sunday June 6th at 10:15am (right after opening). Greeter was nice. The guy in the shoe department was very helpful (large arms and looked maybe like an epically good rock climber). The lady at the check out stand was helpful and informative without being too pushy. When I said I didnt want to join she was gracious and not high pressure about it. Thank you! I was literally at your store because of a toxic experience Id had at REI the day before. I accept that theres a 22% discount for non-members and that if I want to save extra I can join and trade my information and buying habbits for a small discount. If you switch to not letting me get any discounts or buy used/returned gear like REI I wont be shopping with you either. My experience was pretty much great at SB.If I had to complain (which I know I dont, but as a person who has been a manager and a business owner, *I* would want to know) it would be about the two long brown haired young (late 20s? Early 30s?) lady employees that were standing in the aisle near the mens clothing department talking (mostly about personal stuff) and not asking anyone (my partner or myself) if they could help. I actually did need a little help but they were standing facing each other with very closed off body language. So the above mentioned shoe department helper also answered a couple other questions for me. I was always trained when I worked retail to engage customers and not to stand around for an hour chatting with other employees as customers walked around us. Damn, I sound like my grandma. But its pretty rude. If I wanted to sound like my grandpa I would say that what they did was basically stealing from your employer.Anyway, Ill be back because I did receive overall good service and was able to get almost all the things I needed to return the clothes I bought the previous day at REI. I liked the quality, pricing, discounts (without a membership), and service at Sports Basement better. Thanks!

Gotta love Sports Basement! Even under the constraints of the pandemic, they continue to soldier on, keep the doors open and provide great customer service. The store is well organized around COVID -19 controls and the customers were happily compliant. It made me feel safe to shop (and I have been a hermit during the pandemic due to the ubiquitous defiant members of the population who dont think the virus control rules apply to them.).I had a return that didnt manage to make before the first lockdown and discovered in the trunk of my car almost a year later! The cost was almost $200 and items in brand new tags-on condition, so I thought it was worth a shot to ask. They were super gracious and understanding when I went in to make the return. It was a slow morning so I took the opportunity to shop a bit in the open, airy store where everyone was properly masking and distancing.I managed to buy more than the return value, with the help of staff who approached me to offer assistance finding items and answering questions, pointing out the current promotions.I got some great bargains on Arc Teryx and Nike gear that are inspiring me to get out into the woods more.SUPPORT LOCAL! I know it is convenient to buy online but, personally, it felt fun to shop in person again. It was great to be able to try on a multitude of options and find something that fit without having to run up the carbon footprint with all that shipping and packaging and returning. It was also great to have friendly human interaction and time to just toodle about the store at my leisure, checking out all the cool stuff and dreaming of future travel adventures!
