What can I say but, delicious, tantalizing, extravagant. Had a combination of The Dude and Blueberry buttermilk. Oh my word was that great. The dude was like coffee ice cream with Irish cream they said and it was good. The blueberry buttermilk is more a soft blueberry taste. Will be back again soon. Well worth the wait.
The wildflower honey and salt ice cream was one of the best flavors of ice cream I’ve ever had! I went two nights in a row because I couldn’t stop thinking about it! Highly recommend a stop here.
Incredibly delicious! We got the mint and the maple pecan, and both tasted so fresh and real; no fake added flavoring. Definitely would go back here! 🍦Only complaint is I wish theyd switch to paper cups rather than plastic 🌍
Worth the wait. Ive been going to the shop since they opened (so about 15x/summer) and I have NEVER been disappointed. The blueberry basil sorbet is a must for those warm summer nights and the staff is incredibly. Im always impressed with their flavors, vibe, and kindness. Enjoy!
The ice cream was very good and the flavors were exciting. Is there better ice cream? Yes. Are there a lot of places with better ice cream? No. I’d get it again if I went back to Bar Harbor, but not until I tried the other places in town first. They’d have to be pretty good to beat this place though.
I don’t have pictures of my ice cream because I ate it too fast but this is THE BEST ice cream place in Bar Harbor. The other places just aren’t as creamy or flavorful. This place has a really good variety of flavors, the classics and some unique to their own. Don’t even bother with the other places.
I stood in line thinking, there is no way this could possibly be worth it. But then I had my first taste! Of course the flavors were inventive and featured fun names, such as The Dude or aptly named Four Oranges. Thats a given at hip ice cream parlors. Of course the staff was a bunch of young, weird, sweethearts, again, blessedly a given. Of course the music was fun 90s classics and the decor featured a local artists floral nun phase, the menu was written on a chalkboard, the shop was impeccably clean(something I noticed waiting in line) and of course there is an adorable bench surrounded by beautiful flowers right out front. Right? Like cmon, if Ive seen one, Ive seen them all. Its Bar Harbor. Theres lines out the door at all the ice cream shops, this is the one I chose. Okay so all this and then I taste my cone of lemon poppy jam. Which happened to be the most perfectly balanced ice cream Ive ever had. Lemon, poppyseed and a berry jam swirl. Perfectly tart and sweet with the red jammy berries adding a depth of flavor I hadnt expected. Hours away from home I can only wonder, when can I have more?
I am very particular about ice cream, and desserts have to be worth it, or will not eat. Mount Desert Island Ice creams quality was definitely better than expected. I ordered 2 flavors: a mint scoop and a lemon poppy jam scoop, but the mint was surprisingly memorable. Hubbys scoop with coconut base was great. They have imaginative unique flavor options! They have achieved the homemade quality. Thank you for making it not too sweet and not thick and overly creamy, which would be a turn-off for me. If there is a line, it is worth the wait, but there was no line for us! :)
Had a delicious blueberry basil sorbet here. They were out of the blueberry ice cream so I went with the next best thing and was happy with my choice.Taking off a star for all the plastic cups and spoons! Come on, it’s 2021!! This place charges NYC prices but can’t afford to provide paper cups and widens spoons? That’s disappointing
Unassuming place serving outstanding unusual flavors! Try fig (with pieces in it!), coconut with chili, etc.Even standard flavors like coffee are special. Normal coffee ice cream is sugar with a touch of coffee (or in the worst case, caramel). Here, its coffee with a touch of sugar. Its the black coffee drinkers dream!
Hard to miss this spot since you can see people lining up along the sidewalk. Would definitely recommend the fruitier flavors. The Cookies & Cream was decent. The salt caramel was decent. However, the Lemon Poppy Berry and Blueberry Buttermilk Sorbet were ROCKING! I should have gotten the Peach or ginger.Lol ...dont get the Vietnamese coffee if youre a fan of Vietnamese coffee. It doesnt do Vietnamese coffee justice and its kind of unfair to the ice cream itself. If youre stuck and cant pick one flavor, you can select multiple flavors in your order. Also helps that this place is open late, so grab your dinner, walk around Bar Harbor and if you crave some ice cream, this place is open until 11pm.
Delicious ice cream and good prices and portions. You might have to wait a half hour to get your ice cream though. The cinnamon cardamom and peanut butter flavors are amazing.
I had high expectations because of the ratings. The flavors were intriguing too. But the taste of the ice cream was nothing to write home about. The strawberry was more like unsweetened cream (not a big strawberry taste), and the lamington had huge gobs of coconut but not much else. Unfortunately this was a miss for me.
This place is a gem! They have some super awesome and unique ice cream flavors, friendly and quick service, a great location (just head across the street to the village green and grab a bench!), and prices that are a little on the high side but arent insane. Make this your destination for post-exploration recovery!
The ice cream was delicious, the flavours creative and very true to their names. They took a very careful approach to make sure nut allergies were addressed, which is unusual for an ice cream shoppe. The space is simple and utilitarian, but with the park right outside its an ideal place to grab a couple scoops and enjoy a cold treat while strolling around Bar Harbor
I liked the creaminess of the ice cream here. Oreo cookies and cream was good. They didn’t have that many flavors though
Really excited to find this spot. Delicious vegan options- which can be rare. Actually went here three times on our trip because how good the ice cream was.3 stars because of the service. All three times the staff were doing other things than working. Just seems like a management issue. The staff were pleasant and helpful- just preoccupied by each other of their phones.
OMG the ice cream at this place is incredible. The flavors and texture so incredibly well done. We went here every day, two times on some days. A must taste. Recommend a flight to try several awesome flavors. Mmmm.
Great spot! I tried the Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mints with a sugar cone. Delicious ice cream. Would definitely recommend on a trip to Bar Harbor.
We tried three of the highest rated ice cream shops in Bar Harbor. Each shined in a different way. This, in addition to having very unique flavors, shined in its texture, mouth feel, and creaminess. Excellent, excellent ice cream. We’ve heard locals say it’s the best ice cream they’ve ever had. And after trying, you can understand why. Top notch!
Went here based on a recommendation from a friend. If you are in the area, go to this establishment! I tried the wildflower and cookies and cream ice cream and loved it. When I come back, I plan on doing a flight to try some more of their unique flavors, like strawberry basil!Even if there is a long line, be patient, it will be worth it! The servers are awesome and super helpful with explaining the flavors.
Fig flavor was cinnamony and very creamy and yummy! pear flavor was a bit grainy and had little chunks of solid butter inside, personally not my favorite.
Lemon poppy jam was spot on, very good!Unfortunately, they didnt let us try any flavors. We have traveled to more than 20 states recently and eaten ice cream in each state... only this ice cream shop and one in Virginia didnt allow tasting. When I asked this store when they would, they didnt know. Why wait, everywhere is opening up? They seemed more interested in selling ice cream then helping the customer experience their flavors even as Maine has opened up!Another ice cream shop down the street is allowing customers to try the ice cream before buying!
Good taste! Out of some flavors though. No parking close by.
Great ice cream! You can taste the freshness - and they make it down the street! Amazing
The ice cream was excellent but my experience was terrible. The customer service was awful. For a place with quirky flavors, customers need time to read the flavors but the workers began yelling repeatedly at us (the only customers in the whole place). Then the rude girl served another member of my party. All 4 in the party ordered a “single” which varied GREATLY from server to server. Overall, the ice cream was great but i felt humiliated by the one girl server who was yelling. Would give 5 stars for the ice cream flavor and price though.
This place is amazing. They have so many interesting and wonderful flavors and they all taste impeccable. I would recommend the fresh basil ice cream and the wildflower salt honey. The prices are also excellent, especially in comparison to other places around.
Though there is a line, but this ice cream from this shop is way better than the one across street. It’s more flavorful and economic.
This was quite the find for me as an ice cream lover. Not only was the ice cream smooth, creamy, and delicious, but there were so many unique flavors! I had to get a triple in order to try multiple flavors. I also tried the flavors that my wife and kids got. My favorite was Brigadeiro. It was so good that after driving up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain we went back for more ice cream, and I got another triple! Of the 9 flavors that we tried, there was only one that none of us liked—honey baked apple. It tasted like frozen apple sauce and was not at all smooth and creamy like the rest. I wish that we were in the area longer than one day so that I could go back and try all the other flavors! Next time I’m in Bar Harbor this will be my first stop! Let’s see if I can remember the flavors that we got (and I tried all of them): Maine Sea Salt Caramel, Lemon Berry Jam (my wife’s favorite), Brigadeiro (my favorite), Fresh Mint (favorite of one of my kids), Fresh Basil, Honey Baked Apple, Chocolate (favorite of one of my kids), Indian Pudding (never had anything like it before!), and Caramelized White Chocolate Raspberry Jam.
Really big variety of interesting flavors. The ingredients are real. Sour cherry sorbet had nothing but sour cherries!! Loved it.
Wow! The Dude made me feel like I was Jeffrey Lebowski. And our server have me the largest double scoop I have ever experienced. Awesome!
Amazing and unique flavors (basil, cardamom, poppy, and fig were just some of the flavor ingredients. $5 for a single shop is a little touch but $7 for three scoops? Now were talking! :) Scooper was friendly and most importantly, they were all delicious and locally made and high quality. Lemon Poppy Jam was our favorite. Well be back!
Had the bay of figs and the cinnamon Cardamom and they were both so flavorful.
Chocolate ice cream was delicious! Blueberry buttermilk and strawberry were good.
Very delicious ice cream. Diverse flavors and cheaper than other places on the strip
Wonderful ice cream shop right across from the town square. They have tons of unique flavors you dont see other places like Basil and The Dude. The Dude tasted exactly like a white Russian.
We were excited they offered flights to try 4 different kinds. I love unique flavors, and this place had some great ones like blueberry basil, strawberry ginger mint, and lemon poppy raspberry!
Very long wait for decent ice cream. There was a big crowd and few employees. They have unique flavors listed, however, the flavors that we got tasted similar to common flavors. Definitely kid friendly. Ice creamy is very creamy and overall yummy. Portions are small and expensive for what you get. We got bay of figs, which had fruit pieces and a creamy base, brigaderio, which tasted like soft serve chocolate ice cream, callebaut chocoalte, a classic chocolate, and the blueberry.
Allow me to set the scene- car troubles after car troubles and rainy weather during a camping trip, four of my siblings, myself and my father all stumble into town for a change of pace where feet are the reliable mode of transportation. After walking loops around and jumping in and out of tourist shops, were all craving something sweet and cold. Enter, MDI Ice Cream. The line may look large but it moves FAST and there are a smattering of flavors that sound both familiar and strange to entice you (including some nondairy options!). I tried the cardamom and lemon curd icecream and LOVED it. It was like if a lemon bar had become an icecream with a special kick. I highly recommend stopping in and braving the line if youre looking for a sweet pick me up with a twist!
Bar far the best ice cream I had Maine and possibly ever. Not only the ingredients were great, the actual ice cream had a noticeable quantity taste
New and delicious flavor combination, nice folks working late into the evening, thai coconut lime ! Blue berry streusel! A must try while in Bah Haa Bah
Terrific ice cream. They have a wide variety of flavors and sizes to please just about anyone.
Excellent ice cream, good portion size and great taste. Also they are gelatin free..
2 people working in store with a line out the door and not moving at all. Went across the sheet to Big Dipper and got great ice cream with no wait
BEST ICE CREAM IN BAR HARBOR!! I love all of the unique flavors that they have. Their portions are awesome and the prices arent crazy high! Will certainly be back!
Ice cream selection was an eclectic version of some traditional staples, but done in unique ways. The butterscotch miso was awesome and the chocolate was as if you were in a bakers kitchen and sampling the good stuff! Service was polite, but not quite personable. Napkins were available throughout, but the space needed some additional seating options. Most people must walk up, wait in line, and leave after receiving their order.
Excellent ice cream. My favorite is Kulfi, I’m hoping it returns within the next week, that said all their flavors are amazing.
I love their unique flavors! Delicious 😋
Really nice staff ice cream was good. Jordon pond closer to the pier seems to be better ice cream though
Absolutely fantastic! Some pretty amazing people working there too! They were very very sweet!
Very disappointing and it has nothing to do with the ice cream. As a parent with children who have allergies, I was excited when I read all of the precautions listed on the website. However, at the store they mix all scoops in all of the different flavors of ice creams and they are not allergy friendly at all.
Outstanding selection of unusual flavors. Definitely worth stopping by. The fig and kulfi flavors were outstanding.
Great ice cream with lots of unique flavors that are local to Maine.
Great ice cream place. Where can you find fresh Basel ice cream?
Delicious, fresh and many fun flavors (sour cherry, basil etc). Our favorite place in Bar Harbor.
Great chocolate ice cream and great location right next to the village green.
Gravy flavors - I ordered Basil & Reverse Root Beer Float on a waffle cone. Simply delicious
I tried MDI based on all of the rave reviews online, and honestly it was quite disappointing and was my least favorite ice cream shop in Bar Harbor (compared to Ben and Bill’s and CJ’s — we didn’t get to Jordan’s). The line was long and the ice cream expensive, but that was expected and fine. The problem is that the ice cream just wasn’t that good, and certainly not exceptional. More annoying/concerning was when I asked what was in the Blackstrap Banana, and the server shrugged and said they had no idea. Same with a couple of other flavors. I can see how other customer reviews mention issues with nut allergies. All in, would say it was a 6 out of 10 ice cream, and not worth the wait.
Wow! Unique flavors. I recommend the Blue Basil ice cream. Really!
They were out of 1/2 of the flavors after we waited 30 minutes. No notifications that they were out. Price was above average and quality average at best.
Have some fancy flavors like Thai chili, we ordered two triple scoop cups, one is only half filled, and the staff in the shop started yelling at us “we r not opening for indoor dining” while we r just stopped at the table to grab some napkins. And at the same time there is another group of family with 3/4kids gathering in one corner having their food. Guess why? 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
The best ice cream youll ever have! Theres usually a line and the prices are higher than other stores, but SO WORTH IT! Their flavors are really unique and perfection on a spoon (or cone). I love Bay of Figs and their Maple Walnut. Fantastic place!
Amazing ice cream! If you want the best, come here. There are many ice cream shops in Bar Harbor, but none like this! The Brazilian Brigadeiro and the Callebaut Chocolate are a must if youre a chocolate lover! My husband had the Cafe Breve and Vietnamese Coffee. We also tried the Maine Sweet Cream (kind of like a vanilla). The flavors change at times, but they always have some standard ones. We were delighted to find out they have a shop in Old Port part of Portlyon Exchange St, too! Im glad we dont have one of these in Chicago or my waistline would be in trouble!
Great tasting ice cream! They were swamped but were really hustling! Perfect after a long day in the park.
They have 1 option for actual vegan ice cream, which was amazing! They also have quite a few sorbet options that are very fresh. The decor was also very fitting for the location and the servers were knowledgeable about the product and they were very nice. Overall, I would recommend if you’re looking for a vegan option in this area.
Super good ice cream . I got the vietnamese coffee and its the best coffee ice cream Ive ever had.
Large milkshake was almost $8 and was pretty small, mostly milk.
Delicious ice cream 🍦Many wonderful flavors! The lines are long, but definitely worth the wait!
Just opened up for the season so not too many flavors available but what they had was really tasty!
Staff were really helpful and upbeat on a very busy day..... And the ice cream was amazing!
Excellent ice cream. So many different flavors and some exotic choices: basil, sour cream, ...
Good ice creams, but Will & Ben is better. If you want some different flavor, try coconut Thai chili ice cream
Most amazing and interesting ice cream flavors I have ever had. Delicious!
Some of the best ice cream flavors I’ve had! I loved the caramelized pear and the lemon poppy jam!
Best ice cream in Maine. Hands down. Their flavors are extraordinary. Must have!
Vegan…. Ice cream is more like an “ice milk” it’s not creamy like a traditional almond milk based “ice cream”…don’t expect much if your looking for vegan..
Ice cream is amazing, staff sometimes seems put out we’re bothering them. But the ice cream is worth it, so that’s a thing I can deal with.
Hello, dairy-free options.
Moderately lengthy line, especially for June 6 - and definitely worth the wait.Flavors: strange (Coriander Lemon Curd; or perhaps youd prefer Metz Sugar Pill; or, maybe, The Dude - Coffee-Brandy combo or some such concoction the Big L. enjoyed. I saw the movie a, um, while ago and Imall CRS about what actually went on in it) to sublime (Madagascar Vanilla Bean and Chocolate... from Zanzibar, maybe? With a dab of Nutella added just for a taste test.)Mmm-mmm Good! And after a 5-hour drive and a fabulous repast round the way at McKay, a fine finish to a fine day.Tomorrow: Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain, anyone?
