If youre getting 8mm or 16mm film footage converted to digital, read this. Basically, their prices arent completely transparent on their website, and unless you know to ask you may get charged unexpected fees. I brought in a single roll of 8mm film to get converted. On their site they say they charge $0.12-0.15 per foot depending on the type of film. Thats all it says. So when I went in person and dropped off the film, they asked if I wanted it on DVD or MP4. I said MP4 and that I would bring my own USB to put it on when I picked it up. Fast forward a few days later when I go in to pick it up and I see on the receipt that they charge a $19.99 minimum charge for film + a $15 charge to convert a DVD to MP4 file. I didnt ask for a DVD but was given one and charged $15 anyway. They never mentioned the $19.99 minimum charge on their site or in person when I dropped it off, and also didnt specify that choosing the MP4 option would cost $15 extra. Also on their website they say We edit out bad sections in your film. Upon watching the MP4 file at home, the first 6 seconds were completely black, then there was exactly 4 minutes of footage, and then another 8 minutes and 30 seconds of nothing. So that was somewhat annoying. So for one 4 minute roll of film with an extra 8 minutes and 30 seconds of empty space on the video file I paid $37. The quality of the actual footage conversion was fine, but the hidden fees and seeming mistakes in the video file were irritating.
I have been pleased with my experiences with the people at Murray Photo. Mr. Murray is a seasoned photographer, not just a salesman and owner. He has actually talked me out of making purchases because he saw that what I wanted was not needful for me to advance my photography, and he explains why. He is more interested in helping customers to reach their goals so that they are truly satisfied customers. I could have bought the same camera and lenses from other places for the same price, but his 30 years of experience as a professional photographer was the obvious reason for me to purchase from him.
Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. Excellent selection of cameras, lenses, and accessories. As a beginning photographer Ive always found them to be more than happy to answer my many questions. They dont try to upsell you on stuff you dont need, which I find quite refreshing. Great local business that Im happy to support.
Only place I develop photos. The quality is far superior to chain stores and pharmacies.
Despite being told my several folks that this owner lacks respect for women, I decided to go to the store anyways as it was the only place to get film in the area locally. I went a few years ago and was treated...ok, but was belittled about how much or how little I knew about photography. I went a second time not long after that to pick up a product that Ive worked with and knew well, only to be told how I didnt know what I was doing. With all that is happening and inclusion and diversity and cultural differences being so much more prominent, I thought lets try again now that it was years later. To my disappointment, I walked in to the owner leaned back with his arms crossed chatting with two folks that were not purchasing anything nor were they discussing photography or equipment that the store has to offer...was ignored, left unacknowledged and after waiting for a more than reasonable amount of time, decided it was in my best interest to simply leave and make my purchases online. Even as I left, there was no attempt to ask what I was doing or if I needed help or that hes be with me shortly. There is no doubt the owner knows his gear and his stuff, but his customer care and service is severely lacking. I always want to support local businesses which is why I kept going back, but I think this was my last visit.
Im someone who likes to physically talk to someone about the gear I am buying. With a strong passion for photography, but a stronger passion for learning, I love going in and speaking with the guys at Murray Photo. I always give myself over an hour to spend in there because I know I will chat away and soak in all of their knowledge. They have introduced me to a strong love for film and fixed my grandpas old Tl Rolleiflex Camera, and I cant wait to purchase another film camera from them in the future when I learn more of the techniques and skills for film photography. Love stopping in there and exploring the store and listening to all of their amazing advice!
Best photo shop in the valley!! Great service and expertise in all areas of photography.
Colleen Bies just left a review that was very untrue and unfair. Since Google wont let me respond I am doing so here. The short of if is she was in our store for less than a minute and left. I was helping a custom and had one waiting. The rest of what she said is just sad.
Knowledgeable and friendly owner and staff. Great selection.
Very knowledgeable. I will definitely be taking the class to familiarize myself with my camera!
Pretty massive selection for the size of the building. The prices are reasonable too.
I love this place. They do a good job developing film and are the only place in the area that I know of which develops color film. Very knowledgeable about everything from digital to instant cameras, 35mm, medium format and large format film/lenses/cameras. Pat and Alex are great.I stop in whenever I get a chance because they also have a nice collection of very fairly priced film cameras. Im probably going to be stopping in this weekend to drop off some film and talk shop. There are a small handful of camera stores within a 30-40 mile radius but after visiting all of them, I can confidently say that this is by far the best.
I recently stopped into Murray Photo when I found out my old film camera was missing a few screws. After talking with the gentleman behind the counter, he spent the next 20 minutes looking for small screws that would fit the camera. He did all of this free of charge, which speaks volumes about the type of business they run. Will definitely be going back for film development and future maintenance.
Staff was super helpful, informative, and friendly!! A great place to go for any camera or film related need.
Great service ...Needed download for temp DMV licences plate ...Vary helpful !!!!
I love this place. The owner and other people there have helped educate and supply me with what I need to grow my passion for photography. I love the ambience and retro style style feel of the store, and how both employees I have met have a love for photography. I find myself visiting as much as I can, even if to just browse and look at and hear about the stuff that they have and do.I greatly appreciate the fact that there is a place locally that will develop film instead of shipping it to someplace that can.Very affordable prices, great service, and good inventory. Definitely an 11/10
A funeral home gave a member of our family sticky poster board to mount photos for a visitation. No one realized that the sticky poster board would leave irreplaceable old photos forever stuck. We brought the poster boards in and the photos were carefully cut away and scanned. All photos were recovered and scanned in just a few days. The digital copies are perfect. Some of the originals still have poster-board backing, as that was the safest option to not damage 70+ year old photos - they were very careful to not damage anything, and we appreciate that care. THANK YOU to Murrays Photo for preserving these precious memories!
I LOVE this store! ...found them online in an attempt to find an actual camera store, not online or some big box retailer, in order to possibly upgrade my camera body and lens and speak to someone about the gear. I stopped in on Friday afternoon and was greeted by both employees and helped by Alex. He asked what I was currently using and I let him know along with what I was potentially looking for based on some research I had been doing online. He pulled out the camera bodies I was torn about, we compared them, he asked questions pulled out lenses both new and used....long story short, I got to see, touch, and try the gear right there and Alex was with me the whole time, they even double checked for sales and rebates to save me money. They are super knowledgeable and provide a customer service that you just cant find anymore! Just fantastic! Highly recommend!!
PLEASE, if you need ANYTHING photography related, stop here first! Local stores need customers more than the big-box online stores, and Murray Photo is the best in the valley!I visited Murray Photo for the first time today to purchase an 85mm 1.8 lens. The price was listed at $499 on his website but it was actually less expensive in the store. He was super friendly and very knowledgeable, with dozens of examples of his work adorning the walls. Before I even bought the lens, the store owner spent about 20 minutes of his time to offer me advice, and to explain why Ive been shooting wrong for months and how to improve. He was friendly and constructive about it, and had examples of good-versus-bad photos to show me as he was explaining. I put his techniques to the test and I was amazed with the results, my photos are sharper and more clean than almost any photo Ive taken with any lens before. His service is great, but his prices are even better. From what I can see, he sells things at very similar, if not exactly the same as shopping online. (Plus you dont have to pay for shipping and you can get what you need the same day!)Hes made a customer for life out of me, Ill be going to his shop every time I need anything photography related. Heck, I might even go there just to hang out, he seems like a very easy going and friendly store owner. Like I said at the beginning, if you need ANYTHING photography related, please stop here first. Local shops have a direct impact on our community, rather than sending your money off to some company in New York or California.
Great place, good selection of used cameras and film, the best place around to get film developed. I have always been happy with their services.
I understand the other reviews, but I had a fantastic experience with the people at this store. I agree the owner is very honest and upfront with his professional experience and right vs. very wrong photography. We (my photographer) and I, went into the store and left with a lot of free knowledge. The owner was helpful and willing to answer my questions, along with keeping me within a low budget!! Best advice from this experience, do not use auto-focus!!! I recommend this store.
I have going to Pat Murrays photo shop for years. Its time to go see him now! For me its no longer about what you have on a disk or a screen. You need to display those photos where everyone can see them.See Pat and he can help you get your photos on display for everyone to see. In your home, in your office get them off your screen and on to a wall. Share those photos with friends in a way they can always see them. Pat can help you get prints of any size made. Interested in your own photo processing? He has the equipment and chemicals to set up your own processing lab.I even bought a nice Celestron telescope from Pat 18 years ago and still use it now.
Lost my charger for an older Nikon DSLR battery and needed a replacement in a hurry yesterday. Owner showed me a multi-battery charger he had in stock which worked perfectly, and charges batteries for other cameras in our home. Ive been going there for years. Purchased the only two DSLRs Ive ever owned from this store, as well as multiple lenses, bags, tripods, monopods, etc. There are times I could find cheaper prices on some items elsewhere, but Id rather spend the money here and be able to run in after work for a charger when I lose one instead of waiting for it to ship or driving out of town. Couldnt be happier with this store and am grateful Appleton still has a local Nikon shop with an honest owner you can trust.
I want to take a special moment and thank Murray Photo for professionally guiding me through my photography hobby. Ive purchased key items to get me started in a lucrative photography hobby and I feel honored to work with a valuable source like Murray Photo. I look back at my first Tamron lens, manfrotto tripod, Canon 80d to now my latest addition ...loving my purchases and the services I get from here are extremely knowledgeable and professional! Thanks Guys for your guidance and help!Craig
Very helpful staff.
Absolutely love this place. The owner is incredibly helpful, and has a genuine passion for the art. Hes more than willing to sit and help you through procedures (film AND digital). Please people, stop buying all your items in bulk from large camera companies ripping you off. Support and buy local.
I stopped in for a passport photo. The owner took my picture and had it printed and cut within 10-15 minutes. He was very nice and helpful. I highly recommend Murray Photo!
This business has been around forever! When I first got started doing photography they helped me a lot and were very willing to spend lots of time with me.I most definitely would recommend them to anyone. In this world. you can’t please everybody, people are always wanting to gripe about anything and put the blame on others.I love people making negative comments about Murray Photography because THEY forget to pick up THEIR photos... laugh 😝 that’s your fault since their your photos! Goodness gracious people, carry some of the responsibility here. Btw, I don’t have anything to do with this store other than being a long time customer, so don’t blame my negativity here on them. And thank you Murray Photography.
Stopped by because I thought it would be nice to buy local. Owner wasnt afraid to say negative things about previous customers unprompted which is not very good customer service and makes me wonder what hes going to say about me when I leave the store. This, in a addition to the negative responses to low star reviews on here is enough for me to not want to buy from this place. If Im going to drop hundreds of dollars on a camera, I want to make sure its at a place I want to come back to.
Pat Murray is a no-nonsense, straight shooter. If you want to learn something about photography - visit his shop. Great selection and great knowledge.
The owner, Pat, gave me great advice about older cameras and how to use them! Got a TLR camera from them that had a wire attached to it and the employee there took a time-consuming task and took it off. Pat also showed me how to use it, as well as showing me how to use a Minolta camera from the 80s! Support local businesses!
Great place to get prints made and for new and used photography gear. Staff is knowledge and kind.
Worth going to... Just dont take anything to personally they mean to help you out
They are always very helpful and knowledge. They offer a full line of photography options. Film and digital.
Ive stopped in here a few times over the years and the people working there always made me feel like I was worthless whenever I stopped in. I do digital photography and have even had some of my work used for advertising and one photo used for the cover of a book. Yet the person behind the counter insisted that unless Im using film Im wasting my time. Now I avoid that place. Stay away!!
Helpful, friendly and knowledgeable experience at closing time bc we had to drive 30 min to get there. Appreciate the good customer service since I got not a good one in Oshkosh.
Good selection of camera equipment, good pricing, knowledgeable staff and great services offered. A one stop shop for my photography hobby.
Great selection and awesome service!!!
Pleasant, helpful people. Great to patronize businesses downtown
I would like to thank the staff at Murray Photo for the fast service Saturday in printing a photo from my Dads military photo negative.
Great service and knowledge. One of the only places in the Fox Valley where you can still get film develop and print.
Rude, stuck In old ways, and unknowledgeable. People go to these big box stores because of businesses like this. Its a shame Americas local businesss have gone in a direction where they are hostile towards customers. Thank god customers have the internet to share how unpleasant these companies are. Well time to go drop 2 grand at Best Buy.
Super nice Guy,very knowledgeable,We need more small businesses like this.
Very knowledgeable, always learn something new!
We had trouble with a lense and the guy stayed past his closing time to look at it for us...
I was in Appleton for just a few days visiting and needed 5, 4x6 photos printed and was given a 1 day estimate. I never recieved a call and had forgotten that I even ordered photos until a week later, when I had left Appleton and recieved a call that my photos were ready. I love a long ways away so there was no way possible way for me to get them. I forgot about the situation.Today, I recieved a call from this business but proceeded to hang up because of bad reception. An hour later, I receive a FACEBOOK MESSAGE from the owner that says I was rude to hang up and not pick up my photos. I am left uncomfortable by this experience. It is incredibly unprofessional to find a customer on Facebook! Will never be doing business here again.
Great place very helpful
Awesome very helpful
Dropped some film off for development hoping it would be done that day. (They have a 1 hour photo neon sign on the front door) I was told that their machine was off and that it would be done and ready for pick up tomorrow. When I came back the next day I was told that it was still not done, but that they would get to it tomorrow. I still dont have my pictures. I will never get film developed here again.Update: Just recieved a call from murray photo. They did not appreciate my review and will no longer process my film.Update to response: I wasnt told I was going to recieve a call when it was done, just simply that it would be done the next day, and I was only told that the machine was off and that it would be done the following day. The phone call I got was nasty and not the way you should treat a customer when they have a complaint. You should have done everything in your power to solve the issue, and keep the customer happy. Complaining about a business being late with an order is entirely fair, your response was not. As a result of your rude actions, my rating will stay at 1 star and I will tell everyone to keep far away from Murray Photos.
Thumbs down on this place. Overpriced and under knowledged.
Interesting store with a lot of hard to find items
He was unvelievably rude, wouldnt even give him 1 star.
Can wait to use my clean camera.
Very helpful staff.
Great food and service
The place is a bit obsolete
Very good service and the quality of the products is incredible!
