Always have a great selection of books and a relatively quiet environment. Friendly employees and a pleasant owner add to a very good experience. I have been back many times and had similar experiences each time.

Usually come when my boyfriend visits family. Im a pop collector and I can usually find one that Im looking for that I wouldnt normally find in Chicago. The first time I came i was playing Magic the Gathering regularly and they have an awesome collection of cards, dice, and sleeves! I also bought a board game while we were there. Love this place!

Used to love mayhem. Now if you aren’t a magic tournament player they won’t sell certain items to you. Just because I don’t tournament play, doesn’t mean I don’t want to buy products. I will just take my business elsewhere.

If you want good quality customer service dont waste your time unless your interested only in MTG. Ive lost track of how many times there will be a huge line of people waiting to check out only for both cashiers to be occupied by a non buyer of MTG. They will literally ignore you to talk MTG with someone else. Your hands can be filled with comics waiting to check out and you will not exist in there heads if someone might be looking at the MTG case.

They have an awesome collection and anymore looking for something to add to their collection or purchase as a gift should stop in and check them out their selection 😀

I have been an occasional shopper at Mayhem (1-2 visits per year) for a long time. Mayhem is always well lit, clean, and well stocked. They have a great selection of table top and board games and accessories. There is a large selection of comics and graphic novels, and comic related collectables. The store also hosts game nights in their attached game room. Im not sure what their policy is now, but in the past you could set up use of their space for free for playing games.The only reason that this doesnt get a fifth star is that the staff are not the most helpful. I think there is an expectation that you know what youre coming into the store to buy. Someone looking to get into comics or table top games should probably do their research online before visiting.

Nice comic book selection but rude and entitled management. Stopped in to trade in a few books for store credit. Ask the manager if he had a minute and before he even knew what I needed/wanted he said “no. Come back tomorrow.” He had no idea what I was going to ask or how long the interaction would even take. I was stunned. I visit the shop about once a week and seems he never has the time for his customers. Very disappointed and will just take my business to Mayhem in Urbandale.

They can easily speak pro gamer, they are also perfectly comfortable helping very young kids just starting out and are willing to give them a lot of time and undivided attention. Its an Ames classic!

Out of all of the card stores in the Ames/DSM area Mayhem Ames has been the worst out of all of themPros:They are pretty consistent on MSRPThey will check current market price on singlesThey have a wide selection of board/tabletop gamesCons:50% of the time I go in or call I get pretty poor customer service.I frequent the store (2 times a week or so) and still get treated poorly by the same few employees.From what Ive been told, there are no Pokémon people at the store and anytime I ask a question about Pokémon I am treated like I have annoyed the staff.Overall: Ames Mayhem is one of the only options for supporting local in Ames. In comparison to the other Mayhem this one is severely lacking in communication with their groups as well as how they treat their customers. I would really like to see them improve as I have no other option locally.

A good amount of comics and other good stuff

Drove to the Mayhem im Ames on a Saturday night date night to maybe pick up some books I was missing in my runs or score some cgc slabs. No such luck. Granted it is right after the holiday season and with the pandemic still controlling economic recovery the staff was polite. With that being said we proceeded to our objective, down stairs we climb. I havent been able to get this Mayhem location in a few years so it was refreshing to see the murals leading down and comics lining the walls. Unfortunately I wasnt able to find any books to add to my collection this trip. Curiously, I asked if they had any graded comic books and got a deer in the headlights look so that only added too my disappointment. The glass case over flowing with books layer after layer was hard to decipher, I didnt even bother with them. So in review I would say if your looking for newer old stock to fill holes in your runs this place could be adequate enough I guess. Just dont go out of your way expecting too much in regards to comics. I did purchase some mylite+ and half backs, waste of money, will probably throw them in the garbage. Stick with mylites 2 and full backs.

A gamers paradise. The employee I interacted with was friendly and helpful, but the store itself was understaffed. Located in the middle of the block right on Lincolnway, so youll have to find parking somewhere in the neighborhood and walk, but this is true of most Campustown businesses.

Easily the best comic shop in the state of Iowa. They have everything you could ever want. The employees are fantastically nice. And super sociable. Its not the cheapest but for the quality they give you cant beat it.

Update: I feel like I have to update this because Ive been really annoyed lately with the customer service at this store when its time to check out. I would say at least the last 4 or 5 times Ive been here, Ive had to wait forever to just to check out. Theres always someone at the Magic counter but you have to wait awkwardly at that for a while and try to figure out where the line even is and whether or not the person at the Magic counter is checking customers out or theres just no one watching the other register. I dont even get asked about bags and boards anymore. I want to support my local comic book store, but these kids working at this location arent making it easy.Original: Ive been going to this Mayhem location for about 7 years now and still love going. There is less selection than the other location in Clive, but the staff has always been extremely friendly and helpful

Great deals on board games and other merchandise. Also they have multiple game rooms that they allow board gamers, collectible card players, and minerature players to use throughout the year which is very nice. Their Sunday night board games is always a good time and the people that show up are very friendly to newcomers. Would recommend to seasoned gamers or first timers.

My girlfriend and I went to Mayhem to find a new and easy way to spend some time together. We asked the associates at the front desk of they had any suggestions. They were very knowledgeable and polite. I even mentioned the idea of us learning how to play Magic the Gathering and they offered us free demo decks.

Paradise! If you cant find what you are looking for comics, table top games, or MTG related then you need to get your eyes checked. Everything was very nicely organized and easy to find. Dont forget to check downstairs for some hidden gems.

I have been going to Mayhem Comics in Ames since 1998. Over the years the store has consistently improved and always welcoming of new people. The store is clean, well lit and well organized.As the comic book industry has changed over the years Mayhem has evolved. There now a wider variety of games, books, miniatures, etc. The increased variety has brought in people who may not otherwise step into a comic book store and help sustain the success of the store that enabled it to expand to a second location. Each location have remodeled their game room and they are better than ever! In fact, they were nominated for industry best practice for game room.No matter who is working, they have always been friendly and helpful. Whenever have visited they would bring things to my attention that may have otherwise missed.Be sure to check Mayhem out. I have been using their comics by mail service for a long time and am always happy with the condition of my books and other items.Bottom line - every comic book store should strive to be as excellent as Mayhem.

Mayhem is incredible. Two store fronts wide and the basements as well there is so much space to be completely filled with the best and coolest things you could ask for. I purchased a D&D handbook which after a few months fell apart but Mayhem completely replaced it for me, the service is incredible and I will try to do as much business there as I can. Mayhem has always been a fun spot to let out your inner nerd. We love the atmosphere and staff, and we always find new unique games for our family from their huge selection. Currently, our boys enjoy looking at all the Pokemon stuff. And someday Im sure they will be in the card tournaments there too. :)

I used to live close by, and just visited again recently. Such a good space with the best selection of games and comics in the area, and more than enough know-how to get you anything you need that might not be in stock. Great layout, too, and lots of opportunities for organized gaming in the adjacent game space. Pleasant and comfortable and comprehensive, what could be better?

If youre into comics and gaming, this store is the place to go. Id give it 5 stars, but the prices are high. I bought a game for my son there, but could have paid less online. I was on a deadline for his birthday and could afford it. The prices would definitely be tougher for a college student; since this store is located in Campustown and literally across the street from the Iowa State University campus, thats likely the bulk of consumers. They also have a gaming room, which appeared to be full the evening I stopped in. It definitely brought back memories of my own days of playing D&D!

If you are a nerd/geek then you need to shop at the Mayhem store in Ames! Huge selection of comics, games and toys! There is also a game room where every night some sort of game event is going on. If your in the DSM area, then check out the Mayhem in that area. Great staff at both places

If youre looking for comic books and collectibles, Mayhem is the place to go. A great selection of new releases, graphic novels, trade paperbacks and a well organized back issue section. They will also order anything they can that isnt in the store. Mayhem is also one of the local stops for table top games, roleplaying games and card games. They stock lots of miniatures, dice, campaigns and accessories. You might save a little bit ordering online, but you can walk out the door with your stash and physically review it before purchasing. If you get a chance to talk to the owner, Rob, he is a great guy and shares his wealth of information with those that ask.

Ive been shopping here for years, and they have the friendliest, most knowledgeable staff around. I get both my comics and games here, and have never had an issue. They have the best staff of any local games/comic shop and the best atmosphere. And as an added bonus, they have a large game room to play games in free of charge, stocked with vending machines, and open until midnight most nights.

Ive had issues with this store on multiple occasions. Often having to drive back to the store after having just left because of the staff not being able to find or order properly my comics or just receiving bad attitude from the staff in general, maybe its because Im a girl that they feel the need to give me a speech about how pull boxes work? Ive had pull boxes at other stores before, Im well aware, thanks for the 10 min lecture I didnt ask for...To be fair, some days the clerks have been very friendly but its often not been the case. :/

They have a great selection, but dont count on special orders. I placed an order for some comics, and a month and a half later, the order hasnt been placed on their end, with no good excuse. The customer service has been unapologetic about the matter also.
