I met with one of the owners, David Carlson, at his shop on December 23, 2015 to discuss having him do three custom exterior doors for our home in Highland. He seemed like a nice guy with a shop set up to make a quality door. We gave him the door plans and a deposit for half the price of the doors in late January. After not seeing anything from them by early April, I emailed the project manager, Doug Ash, to ask what was going on. He replied, The wood should be here in a about a week. It comes from Montana unlike the more common woods that come directly from Salt Lake.It is now September 9, 2016 and we found out last week that they havent even started our doors! After talking with Doug this morning it appears that there has been a communication and scheduling challenge with our builder. Doug has promised to get things resolved and to make timely progress on our project in the coming weeks. Well see how it plays out and Ill update the review at that time. Expecting it will be 5 Stars!Updated Review as of September 9, 2017: Well, we dropped from 4 starts to 1 star and if I could give them zero stars I would do so. Not only were they dishonest in their communication with me about progress on the door, but their door quality is terrible. The straight butt joints on our white oak front door are 1/8 inch out of 90 degrees and had to be filled with putty, the veneer was separating on day one of the installation which didnt happen until November 11, 2016 - more than 9 months after we gave them the deposit. They dropped the door off at the house and didnt even install it - made my finish carpenter do it!By the end of the winter, the door had warped outward a full inch and the trim around the side lights has separated so badly that its embarrassing. Shoddy craftsmanship and terrible customer service. Towards spring, they finally came out to install the door trim. The door is so poorly constructed that the trim wouldnt even stay in place. There is still 3/8 of daylight between the bottom of the door and the threshold. My builder, Highland Custom Homes, approached them about warrantying the door and despite the fact that the builder screwed up and didn’t seal the door in a timely manner, Carlson agreed to do so. After promising to take care of the repair/replacement for 6 months, they finally, in August (as we are preparing to host a wedding reception) told the builder that they were not going to stand by their word. This has been a pattern with these guys. When I originally had them bid the door, they agreed to give me a 15% discount as my home was to be a live-in model for the builder. When the invoice came the discount was gone and they said it was because I was not a parade home and that I had deceived them. Their project manager lied to me multiple times about the materials and at the end of the day they ended up not building the door with reclaimed lumber from Montana at all! I had to call them on that when they invoiced me because they didn’t at first credit my account for the discrepancy in pricing for reclaimed white oak over regular white oak.The project manager also constantly bad-mouthed our builder during the building process, but when the builder went to their office to talk to them about it face to face, the project manager bad-mounted me instead! Add all that to the recent going back on their word with my builder and you can see why I would not recommend anyone doing business with this door manufacturer. See the pictures and ask yourself if you want this kind of quality going into your custom home!
Ive worked with these guys on several projects now. Top quality work. They are true craftsman with attention to detail. They take great pride in their work and it shows. Great communication laying out clear expectations and excellent follow through. Highly recommended in every way.
The Carlson Brothers are amazing! We had a bunch of issues with broken doors, chairs, and other items and they fixed them up so you cant even tell they were broken in the first place. Recently, a support beam at our building was damaged and they were able stabilize and reinforce it. They are professional and provide high quality work. Their standard of work sets a high bar for others to follow.
I asked Carlson Crafted to make me a plaque in honor of my dog who passed away. It turned out beautifully. When I reached for my wallet they told me it was on them. I would definitely use them again. Couldnt recommend them enough.
Excellent quality at amazing price! The thing that impressed me the most aside from the quickness of the completed project was the fact they were honest in suggesting better, cheaper material that looked absolutely stunning afterwards! Definitely recommend!!
Great work on their doors! Very impressed.
