How to Recondition a Laptop Battery?

You should make sure to check the type of battery your laptop has before you start this procedure. If the specifications in computer advice that it is a Li-ion battery, you are free to proceed. I will use the Li-ion as an example considering that most laptop batteries nowadays are made using lithium shifting from Ni-Cad and Ni-MH batteries that were used before. There is however no clear way to recondition a Li-ion battery. For this procedure I would suggest that you use an old and dead battery since there is not much damage that you could cause. Replace the old batteries with new ones by detaching the wires that may be welded and soldering wires connected to the new batteries.V. As I stated earlier, Li-ion has a series of cells. How to Recondition Ni-Cad Batteries?

Nickel cadmium batteries can be reconditioned as well. They however contain sulfur crystals that build up inside the battery. These crystals need to be destroyed or vaporized at high voltage. It is not as difficult as it sounds. The equipment you need for these tasks are; a battery holder, a dead and fully charged Ni-Cad battery, a capacitor (which you can retrieve from a disposable flash camera), a high power switch, a small switch and wires. You may also require tools such as; a flat head screwdriver, soldering iron, wire clippers, pliers, wire slippers and tape.The procedure for reconditioning the batteries is as follows:I. Using the flat head screwdriver, open the case of the disposable flash camera and discharge the capacitor. You should be alert for a spark in this procedure.II. Replace the metal parts in the circuit with a small external switch for ease of control. Solder two pieces of wire to the circuit and make sure to tape it to prevent being shocked.III. At this point of the procedure, you should add a high power switch and a battery holder. Solder both the black wire and red wire to the negative and positive terminals of the battery respectively. Then solder the high power switch with respective wires from the battery.IV. In this procedure, you should case the high voltage areas to cover the exposed areas of the circuit for safety. If you do not have a box to case the capacitor, you can use the tape.V. Place the dead battery to the battery holder and connect them to a good battery using a good alkaline battery and turn on the light switch. When the led light starts to glow it means that your battery is coming back to life.

How to Recondition Lead Acid Batteries?

A well reconditioned battery will yield performance of around 60-70% its potential capacity. You need safety glasses, screwdriver, plastic funnel, battery post cleaner, battery hydrometer, battery load tester, voltmeter, sulfuric and lead acids. The procedure for this is as follows:I. Use the post cleaner to clean both the positive and negative posts of the battery to get rid of corrosion and dirt.II. Check your battery’s volts for weak cells. You need to replace the cell if they are weak of dead.III. Using a flat screwdriver, remove the caps of the battery.IV. Use the voltmeter to test each cell for 2 volts. Any cell with volts below 2 is dead and needs replacing.V. For the cells with more than 2 volts, use a battery load tester to ensure there is a collective reading of 12 volts.VI. Using a battery hydrometer, you need to check on how much charge you need to get your battery fully charged.VII. Add Epsom salt using a plastic funnel to the six cells of the battery.VIII. Charge the battery for 24 hours. In this step, you will have your conditioned battery in full swing.
